We search and we search and yet find no meaning.

The search for a meaning leads to despair.

And when we are broken the heart finds its moment To fly and to feel and to work as it will Through the darkness and mystery and wild contradiction.

For this is its freedom, its need and its calling; This is its magic, its strength and its knowing.

Today we offer our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family of Kate Fuller (Year 12). Tragically and suddenly, Kate and her family lost their brother and son in a traffic accident over the weekend.

Gracious God, As a Christian community, together we pray for Simon’s eternal rest in your loving care. May his family and friends be strengthened through our prayers. We offer, in your Name, our love and support to each of them at this time of deep and profound sorrow. We give thanks for the love and life of Simon and pray for his eternal peace. Amen.

Volume 4 February 21, 2012 YEAR 12 RETREAT This week our Year 12’s will spend three days away from the school on Retreat. The focus of this year’s retreat is “Spiritual Freedom”. Commencing on Ash Wednesday, it is perfect timing in terms of entering the Lenten season of reflection on self, others and our God. Please remember the students and our teachers in your prayers this week.

May they relish this precious gift of time and embrace the opportunity of being together.

A REMINDER FROM QUEENSLAND POLICE SERVICE Local Police are reminding parents to slow down and drive carefully near schools. Always observe school zone signs which requires you to travel at a lower speed during 7.00am-9.00am and 2.00pm-4.00pm. This will help you to prepare for the unexpected around schools. Please pay particular attention and watch out for children riding bikes, crossing roads, getting off busses or out of cars. Parents please take a few moments to talk to your children about road safety and reinforce how important this issue is. Remember being cautious and slowing down around schools won’t make much difference in your travel time, but it could save a child’s life.

GONSKI REVIEW: Funding to Schools

NATIONAL CATHOLIC EDUCATION COMMISSION

KEY MESSAGES ON CATHOLIC SCHOOL FUNDING FROM 2014

The success of Australia’s education system relies on increased government support for schools in all education sectors—government and non-government.

1.

One in five Australian children attends a Catholic school, and Catholic schools operate with an average of 10% less recurrent funding than government schools.

2.

Government support for all Catholic school students guarantees real parental choice in education and delivers value for taxpayers.

3.

It costs governments much less to educate a student in a Catholic school than it does to fund a student at a government school, because parents share the cost. This saves the Australian taxpayer $2.2 billion a year.

4.

Inadequate funding for Catholic schools would see school fees rise with the possibility of many students transferring to government schools, adding pressure to already tight budgets.

5.

Improved funding for all students is critical to education quality and these funds must be increased each year to reflect actual increases in school costs.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC EDUCATION COMMISSION

THE NCEC’S RESPONSE TO THE GONSKI REPORT

1.

The Final Report of the Gonski Panel on The Review of Funding for Schooling is a significant piece of work.

2.

The Report provides a theoretical framework.

3.

There are key questions that remain unanswered. Substantial analysis needs to be done to test the model and the Report’s recommendations.

4.

The Government has announced a consultation phase, including analysis and testing of the model, to commence immediately.

5.

In its response to the Report, the Government recognises that families face financial pressures and do not wish to see school fees rise beyond their reach.

6.

The NCEC will be working hard during the consultation phase to ensure we do not end up with a model that has the potential to put pressure on school fees for parents in Catholic schools.

7.

NCEC strongly backs the Gonski Panel’s call for an additional $5 billion in funding for all schools. This represents less than one half of 1% of Australia’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Drama News Year 12 Drama – Theatre Visit to “As You Like It” @ La Boite Theatre Today, the Year 12 Drama students went to see La Boite Theatre Company‘s production of Shakespeare‘s comedy ―As You Like It.‖ This production informs a piece of summative assessment for these students.

After the production the actors came out to the foyer to chat to the girls. Helen Howard, who played the main role of Rosalind, worked with these students when they were in Year 10 as part of an Artist-In-Residence Program so it was lovely for the girls to meet her again.

play ―Summer of the Seventeenth Doll‖. This classic Australian play is one of the pillars of our national theatre and this particular production has already had very successful seasons in both Sydney and Melbourne.

This particular theatre

visit will inform a piece of assessment so attendance is compulsory. Tickets are non-refundable so it is important that your daughter honours her booking unless illness or extenuating circumstances arise. In this case students will have to make separate arrangements to see this show as it is part of their formal Drama assessment. Students will need to organise their own transport to and from the venue and will need to arrive at The Playhouse Theatre QPAC no later than 7.10pm to meet with their teacher who will be in the foyer waiting for them to issue them a ticket. The performance concludes at approximately 10.35 pm. The running time of the production is: 2 hours and 55 minutes with 2 intervals.

ANNIE BOOKING - Tuesday 17th April, 2012 Parents/Students, our school‘s group booking for ―Annie‖ the Musical featuring Anthony Warlow, Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney - Tuesday 17th April 2012 @ 7.30pm has now closed. We have had a great response from parents and students. We are finalising the payment this week and then we will be sent the tickets from QPAC. Those students and parents who have already put their name down and sent in a completed payment form will be sent an email regarding ticket collection dates. Grease Tickets - ALL SOLD OUT! All four of the Grease performances have now completely sold out. The demand for tickets was overwhelming and we appreciate the enthusiasm of the Loreto and Villanova communities to want to come and see this production. Apologies to those who were unable to secure seats. Students of both Colleges will be treated to performances from Grease on Assembly, so all students will have the opportunity to enjoy featured sections of the musical.

Grease Rehearsals - We are now on the countdown until our ―Grease‖ production week and the show is really coming along well. This afternoon we have our rehearsal from 4pm - 7pm. This coming weekend we will hold our Intensive Camp ―Grease‖ weekend. Full details will be distributed to the students this afternoon.

Costume Lists - Costume lists were emailed to all parents over the weekend and hardcopies were given to all of the Chorus and Dance Chorus members during Friday afternoon‘s rehearsal. Accessories were also distributed to students.

We ask that parents please assist their sons/daughters in taking care of these items as most of them are hired. We will let the students know when they are to bring all costumes to rehearsals. German Trip Thirteen students from the 2011 Yr 10 and 11 German classes spoke on assembly last week about their visit to our sister school in Bad Homburg. It was the fifth time a group from Loreto Coorparoo had participated in this language and cultural immersion program. The girls spoke of the highlights of the trip which included excursions to Cologne, Rothenburg, Frankfurt and the fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein. More sobering experiences took place during visits to Dachau and Nuremberg. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be shown around the Mary Ward schools in Mainz and Augsburg by the sisters there.

Their tour of the spa for which Bad Homburg is famous was also very memorable. Just as memorable was the guided tour of Munich which included a visit to the headquarters of BMW, Nymphenburg Palace and the Christmas markets. Travelling by train and bus as well as venturing onto the Autobahn gave them an insight into the speed, comfort and convenience of the German transport system. They loved the dining experiences they had, such a rich variety of German food offerings as well as cuisine from other countries. Their host sisters made them feel so much a part of their families that the Loreto students will be forever grateful for the kindness and hospitality extended to them. Many thanks to Frau Ward, Frau Stewart and Ms Tilly for organising this wonderful experience. ―Danke schoen‖ also to Frau Eder (Principal), Sr Barbara and the teachers at the Maria-Ward-Schule in Bad Homburg for the warm welcome shown to our Loreto students.

Music Department News Year 8 Brass Ensemble There has been an overwhelming response to this year‘s brass ensemble. We are scrambling to find as many instruments as possible, however, there will not be enough room from everyone who wants to be involved to join. Could all year 8 students who have applied to join please come along to a meeting on Friday lunchtime in room 703. The brass tutor, Ms Clarke, will give you the chance to try playing an instrument then so that we can check that you have chosen an instrument that best suits you.

Volleyball Reports – Round 1 Congratulations to all teams on a great start to the season. The enthusiasm and team spirit was evident and without doubt impacted positively on their performance on court. Loreto team won six out of seven matches. A top effort, girls!

Open A – The open A volleyball team have had a difficult start to the year, with three injuries within the first week. Despite this, the girls came through with a dominant 2-0 win against St. Rita's. Ultimately, the serving of the team was the deciding factor in the game, particular from Kristen Feuerriegel and Sarah Pettiford.

Open C – Congratulations to the Open C's on a successful start to the season with a 3-0 victory over Mt St Michael‘s. All girls played well with consistent serving and defence being the key difference between the teams. Special mentions must go to Kiah Smith for introducing the 'tomahawk' defence and Mary-Kate Dennis and Isabella Mammone for outstanding debuts.

Junior A – This season looks like it will be a dominant one for the girls. They all showed great concentration in the game against San Sisto College. Awesome serving by all the girls kept us in the game. Special mention to some very out there defense by Claudia Miotti! Keep up the great work girls!

Junior B – A great effort by all players on their first game of the season. Unfortunately, we lost the 3 rd set however, overall a great game. Special mention to Lucy Neilson and Georgia Johnson for great serving. Great work!

Junior D – The girls had a good 2 sets -1 win over LHC on Wednesday arvo with consistent serving definitely a highlight.

All girls played well however, special mention to Emma Quinn and Matilda Ruffin for pulling out big plays on crucial points.

Well done, Girls!

Junior E – A fine way to start the volleyball season for this brand new team. Clare Lyon's excellent support play and movement on court, coupled with Sophie Hinchliffe's great serving were but a few examples of this team that is brimming with exciting potential! Bring on the rest of the season!

Junior F – Our Junior F Volleyball team played against All Hallows‘ School. Walking into the All Hallows‘ ‗Loreto‘ sports hall, the girls were nervous however, after winning the game in the first 2 sets they regained their confidence and went on to win the match 4-0. Although many of the girls had never played before, every single one played brilliantly as if they had played before. Special mention must go Zoe Sever for winning 15 points in a row from her serves and also to Mia Munch for her terrific digging throughout the game. Good luck for next week girls!! Kirsty Gore – Volleyball Coordinator Representative Sport Congratulations to Georgia Johnson- Under 16 and Isabel Mowen (Open-shadow) on their selection into the Metropolitan East Volleyball teams. Swimming Squad Loreto v’s Villanova Swimming Carnival The Loreto College Annual Swimming Challenge was held last Friday 17 February. This competition has been running since 2002 and in 2009, 2010 and 2011 Loreto were able to win the shield for the first time. With a very strong team going into the competition this year unfortunately Loreto lost to Villanova by 6 points. Congratulations to our Swim Captains, Elise Fort and Hannah Kassulke and the Loreto swim team for their outstanding efforts. A special thanks to our Year 12 students for timekeeping and the Spirit Council lead by Stephanie Esprester. A special thankyou to Mrs Logan for her hard work on pool deck.

All Hallows’ Club Swim Meet A reminder to the swim squad that the All Hallows‘ Swim Meet is held this Friday 24 February. All swimmers must meet Mrs Stevens and Mr Di Bella directly after school at the Mary Ward Centre. A bus will transport the girls to All Hallows‘ school but arrangements must be made for parents/guardians to collect the girls after the meet at approximately 6.00pm.

St Peter’s Lutheran College Swim Meet On Friday 2 March our swimming team will be competing at the St Peter‘s Lutheran College Swim Meet. Our team have the opportunity to do time trials and improve their times in the 50m pool. A bus has been arranged to transport the girls to St Peters Lutheran College (66 Harts Rd, Indooroopilly) directly after school finishes. The warm up is at 4.30pm and the meet will start at 5.00pm. The finish time is approximately 6.30pm. Parents/guardians are required to collect their daughter after the meet at St Peters Lutheran College. Year 11 Ancient History Trip Last Thursday the Year 11 Ancient History students spent the day on St Helena Island working as archaeologists. The girls used a variety of primary sources [building plans, photographs, aerial photographs] and archaeological evidence to string line both the Superintendent‘s House and the prison cells. From this they were encouraged to reflect on the conditions that existed on St Helena during its time as a prison for the penal settlement of Brisbane. This led them to identify societal attitudes, values and practices to punishment, class and racism and how these were present on St Helena during the 1800‘s. Year 11 Semi-Formal

Friday 2nd March 2012, 7.30 – 11.00pm: Greek Club, South Brisbane The Year 11 girls are looking forward to their Semi-Formal with eager anticipation. The aim of the evening is to provide an introduction into the etiquette and delight derived from a more formal occasion than most girls would not have experienced at this stage of their lives. Inviting a partner adds to this sense of celebration and responsibility. The Greek Club venue and the attendance of Year 11 Homeroom teachers will provide the girls with a safe, festive and formal environment in which to celebrate their important transition into the Senior School.

The girls have been fully briefed about expectations of dress, behavior and partners. We ask that parents support us by personally delivering their daughters and partners to the Greek Club punctually at 7.30 pm and then again promptly picking them up at 11.00pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before 11.00pm. All partners must produce a current ID card from their school and your daughters have been asked to politely introduce their partners to their Homeroom teachers.

Whilst Loreto College does not support the girls attending ‗post parties‘, we are aware that some girls may progress from the Semi-Formal to other celebrations. The responsibility for the safety of the girls moves back to their parents at this stage but the girls also need to be aware that their actions for the entire evening will reflect upon the College.

It is timely, therefore to remind parents about the issue of alcohol consumption by underage drinkers. Many girls may have their parents believing at this stage that ALL girls will be attending a post Semi-formal party and ALL girls will be consuming alcohol. This is not true but these beliefs contribute to the normalization and cultural

acceptance of drinking and often lead to episodes of binge drinking which can seriously harm the health of your daughters. Please ensure the safety of your daughters by: 

Ensuring that your daughter gives you the phone number of the parents in charge



Checking with the host parents of the party that there will be sufficient adult supervision at a safe and suitable venue, security at the door/gate, water, soft drinks and food



Checking that there is a restricted guest list



Taking a strong stance against the consumption of alcohol by these underage teenagers



Personally delivering and picking up your daughter from the party at a pre-arranged time



Making sure your daughter keeps a fully charged mobile phone with her throughout the party



Discussing these harm minimization strategies with your daughter .
