The pa ence to be understanding and the endurance to accept the consequences of holding to what we believe to be right.

May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred.

We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe in a world emancipated from violence, a new world where fear shall no longer lead people to commit injus ce, nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others.

We pray for the release of these Nigerian girls. We pray that they are safe and allowed to con nue their educa on.

We pray that their captors come to understand the gravity of their decisions and the extreme nature of their ideologies.

Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy to the task of making peace, praying always for the inspira on and the power to fulfil the des ny for which we were created.

I wish to thank and congratulate the students and staff on yet another most successful MISSION DAY, with par cular thanks going to the student leaders who gave so much of themselves to this day. This special day in our calendar provides and encourages opportuni es for leadership through service. Inspired by Mary Ward’s wisdom: to ‘seek truth’ and ‘do jus ce’, we aim not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness about unjust systems and circumstances within our world. I thank the Year 12 Religion students for the carefully and though ully prepared lessons they gave to the younger classes. They were very informa ve and mo vated the students to be generous in their giving and caring in their ac ons.

To Georgia Bishop‐Cash (Year 8) who won a gold medal in Canberra at the Na onal Junior Wheelchair Basketball under 21’s during the Term 1 break. She was the youngest and the only girl in the Queensland team. Georgia has also been selected for the Qld School Sport Swimming Team to par cipate in the School Sport Australia Swimming and Diving Championships to be held in Melbourne from 20 July to 26 July 2014. Curriculum & Year Level Reports Art Department In Term One Year Nine art students were asked to create functional ceramic pots that were inspired by organic forms. This involved completing an appraising task to research the work of a ceramic artist. Students then selected their own organic forms which were explored through detailed observational drawings. They then worked with these drawings and their knowledge of the forms to create designs for the form and the surface treatment of the vessels. The process required students to respond with wonderment, be flexible in their thinking, to reflect and evaluate ideas and to be innovative in the design process. The works created demonstrate the diversity of thought, creativity and qualities which have lifelong values.

Drama News On Thursday, Year 9 and 10 Drama students will be attending a performance by Zeal Theatre of the play The Apology. Students will be presented with a hard-hitting performance about the nature of Bullying and its consequences. Students in Year 9 will subsequently write an analysis of the performance which will comprise part of their assessment for the semester.

Music Department The King and I This Wednesday 21 May (tomorrow!) will see the Year 11 & 12 Senior Music classes head to QPAC’s Lyric Theatre to see “The King and I”. Students will be given their tickets during the school day on Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Parents should drop students at QPAC so that they can meet staff near the Cloak Room by 7.15pm. The performance will finish at approximately 10.00pm and parents should collect their daughters from near the Cloak Room by 10.15pm.

Powerhouse of Leaders Conference On Monday May 12, six Year 12 students attended the 2014 Powerhouse of Leaders conference in New Farm – a day of spiritual and leadership formation. They listened to a number of guest speakers including Archbishop Coleridge, Steve Angrisano, Matthew Ames, Kiri Groeneveld and rapper, Roman MC! The theme of the day was “What makes me proud?”

The students also shared ideas in small workshops. Anandi Padhee, Sarah Bryant, Chantel Morris, Kess Eisentrager, Teagan Chaston and Claire Da-Rin De-Barbera participated with enthusiasm and were great examples of Loreto leaders on this day.

Year 12 Information Night - QCS A reminder of the Year 12 Information Evening, commencing at 7.00pm on Monday 2 June in the Mary Ward Centre. Mr Elsworthy will discuss the components of the QCS Test, SAIs, the scaling process and the calculation of OPs. Careers Counsellor Ms Rynne, will also be available to answer questions about QTAC applications and deadlines for this process.

As you are aware, the QCS Test will take place on Tuesday 2 September and Wednesday 3 September, consisting of – Writing Task, Short Response Items and Multiple Choice Questions. Your daughters will be invited to attend breakfast here at the College on the first morning of testing, Tuesday 2 September.

Co Curricular Events Co-Curricular Music Autumn Concerts Congratulations to all the students who performed so well at our two recent Autumn Concerts. Both nights were very enjoyable events that promise great progress for all music groups this year. Thanks must go to all the music teachers and ensemble conductors for your work in preparing student groups for their performances. I would also like to particularly thank the general school staff who came along to supervise and support the girls, as well as Peita Ward for giving up the Friday night to compere the first concert.

Concert Bands One & Two, and Big Band In Week 6 of this term Concert Band One will move their regular rehearsal to the afternoon of Friday 30 May (just for that one week Big Band will swap to Thursday 29 May). This one-off change will allow us to have a very special rehearsal that you do not want to miss! Members of Concert Band Two will also be invited to come along to this extra special rehearsal which will run from straight after school until 5:30 pm. I am not going to release details of exactly what will happen that day, but it will involve a guest professional band and lead towards some fantastic performance opportunities for later this year. All students in the Concert Bands should have received a letter regarding this event at their last rehearsal.

Loreto Music Festival - Bandslam The entries for the Bandslam section of the Loreto Music Festival close this Friday. All year 9 and 10 music classes are currently preparing band performances for assessment so make sure you enter these songs. Heats performances will be judged during classes or negotiated times just prior to exam block and the final will not be held until Tuesday 24 June so even if you don’t feel quite ready yet, you should enter as there is heaps of time remaining to polish up your songs!

Date Claimer Loreto has been asked to provide some music for the St Catherine’s Fete on Sunday 22 June. It is my intention to take Sorelle, Exit Stage Left and the Big Band to this event, which is after exam block and prior to the next holidays. I am still working out final details regarding timing of our performances but the Fete runs from 10 am to 4pm and we would likely play in an approximate 45 min block sometime during that timeframe. If students/parents involved with these ensembles could please add this date to their calendars (and contact Mr Langford if there are any problems or clashes that will affect your attendance) I will publish details as soon as possible.

Year 9 Cent Auction - Mission Day What an action packed 45mins was had during the Year 8/9 Cent Auction at Mission day! There were so many amazing prizes which resulted in an unbelievable amount of tickets sold. In fact, close to 2000 tickets were sold - a fantastic effort! I would like to acknowledge the work of the Year 9 class captains and SRC representatives and thank the staff who assisted on the day. In particular, I would like to thank the generosity of Good Guys, Mt Gravatt for donating an Ipod shuffle and to Grill’d Carindale for donating $40 worth of vouchers. These prizes were the talking point of the morning.

Public Speaking If anyone has negative thoughts about today's youth, they should attend a Public Speaking competition. There they will be inspired, motivated, informed and entertained. On Saturday, Loreto College was represented at Rostrum Voice of Youth by three outstanding students - Sophia Dabinett (Year 9), Alexandra White (Year 10) and Taylor Whitewood (Year 10).

Respectfully, their topics were: Trash or Treasure, A Valuable Legacy and We only hear what we want to hear.

All three girls delivered their speeches with confidence, passion and wit. The three girls have rehearsed consistently and persistently in the last two weeks since Round One. The delivery of each demonstrated skill in pausing, usage of emphasis and variation of pace. Each of the girls also included interesting facts, moments of humour and emotional appeal. We congratulate them on their effort, commitment and dedication. Well done, Sophia, Alex and Taylor!

This year we are very fortunate to retain the services of our experienced and qualified coaches from last year as well as a new Open C Coach. The Open A coach is Richard Hamernik; the Open C coach is Mark Youngjohns; the Junior A coach is Anthony Costa and the Junior C coach is Luke Duncan.

There will be a Cross Country breakfast on Monday 26 May at 7.00am to celebrate the season and the hard work leading up the major competition. Cross Country Squad Camp Report On Saturday 3 May, members of the Cross Country and Athletics Squad put in their best effort from the word go. The trainings and the activities built up our fitness and were a great way to start the season. After a morning of training, the girls began the afternoon with circuit training, yoga and aquatics. It was a tough day and the girls worked very hard. That night the Captains planned trivia questions on music, sport, celebrities and Loreto College. Working in groups of different year levels, the girls were able to get to know one another and have fun. On Sunday 4 May, the Cross Country and Athletics girls took part in the Gold Coast marathon series, which was a 5km fun run at Runaway Bay. The morning was dark and cold, however we all powered on and took part in this fun event. The day was very successful with many girls achieving personal bests. Congratulations to Kate O’Sullivan who was awarded 3rd Overall in her age group (16 Yrs - 19 Yrs).

After the fun run, Nutritionist; Peita Hynes, talked about well- being and diet for an athlete. She spoke about race readiness, general nutrition and the importance of healthy snacks prior to races. We all grew stronger as a team, and overall it was a fantastic weekend. The girls aimed to find a personal goal for themselves, to have accomplished by the end of the season.

The amazing facilities at Runaway Bay Sports Centre, gave girls an opportunity to develop their skills, whether running, jumping or throwing. The delicious food and the great atmosphere meant a wonderful weekend for all.

P & F News As we approach the end of financial year, the P&F Association comfortably holds $30,000 thanks to the contribution of family levies. Your $15 quarterly payment is integral to providing educational aids and equipment for the students of our College.

We urge you to continue with these payments as it provides financial support, in lieu of fundraising collections, to allow the P&F to make significant contributions to the College.

Community engagement continues to strengthen within the Association as we move forward with the planning of the popular Gala Ball on Saturday 14 June. Guests are sure to be entertained by our resident Master of Ceremonies, Pat Elsworthy, who has announced his intention to retire at the end of this year, after 29 years at Loreto.

Also on the agenda is the soon to be released inaugural Loreto Cook Book. Trivia Night Thank You The 2014 Loreto Trivia Night was again a huge success this past weekend. Approximately 175 parents and students attended, many in creative and elaborate costumes to match the theme of “Heroes and Villains”. The Trivia Night is one of two major fundraising events run by the Music Support Group and money raised will go straight back to the students in funding the variety of Music Tuition scholarships offered each year. I would like to thank the parents of the Music Support Group for their efforts in collecting prizes, setting up the hall and generally running the night, as well as all those parents and students who answered our plea to donate prizes to make the Trivia Night not just fun but also lucrative for all those who attended!
