Singers in seedy nightclubs, singers in the street; Singers in the cathedrals, schools halls, grandstands, backyards, paddocks, bedrooms, corridors, stairwells and places of echo and resonance. We give praise to all those who give some small voice to the everyday joy of the soul.

As always their performances were polished and professional, earning high praise from the adjudicators. In all Loreto received an impressive 14 Gold and 4 Silver. Congratulations to all involved for the many months of planning, practice, rehearsals and commitment. VIT@L AT LORETO “ViT@L” is the name we have given to our current professional development project in which the teachers are now fully immersed. “ViT@L” is Visible Thinking and Learning at Loreto. On Saturday we welcomed Mark Church, co-author of “Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding and Independence for All Learners” back to Loreto. Mark visited us earlier in the year spending time with a small focus group of teachers exploring the concept of what it means to develop and embed a deep and strong culture of thinking in a school. Mark Church is a consultant for the Project Zero: Cultures of Thinking team at Harvard Graduate School of Education. He returned to Loreto on Saturday, this time working with the whole staff. “Visible Thinking”, as described by the Project Zero team is “a flexible and systematic research-based approach to integrating the development of students’ thinking with content learning across subject matters.” It has a two-fold purpose: 1) to cultivate thinking skills as dispositions and 2) to deepen content learning. We are indeed very privileged to be working with a world recognised educator of Mark’s calibre, knowledge and abilities and look forward to his continued work with us. Mark will return to Loreto again in October to further guide, direct and lead the work of the focus teacher group. We give thanks for his expertise and support.

Going Places with Geography…. Last week was a big week in the Geography Department with both Years 9 and 10 students undertaking field trips for their respective assessment tasks this term. To start the week off, the Year 9’s went to Sea World on the Gold Coast as part of their tourism unit, “Destination Gold Coast”. Brooke Della from 9Blue had the following to say: The Year 9 2014 excursion to Sea World on the Gold Coast was filled with fun, excitement and new learning experiences. The excursion went over two days to allow all Year 9 students to attend along with many helpful parents who volunteered as group supervisors. There were activities that were compulsory and optional, including an educational talk about the park’s operations; all were very enjoyable. As the teachers wanted us to experience all parts of the park, we were also allowed one ride, with many of the girls choosing the Storm Coaster, a recently opened water rollercoaster at the park. Overall, Sea World lived up to its mission statement throughout the day and I’m sure all of us would love to go back again soon, for educational purposes of course! I would also like to thank all the Year 9 Geography teachers, Ms McGowan, Mrs Valentine, Mrs Matheson and Mrs McKeown as well as Mrs Dawes and Mrs Foster, who accompanied the classes over the two days and helped make it such a success. A final thank you also needs to go to Mrs Christine Kelly for so ably organising the volunteers for the days. On Friday, it was the Year 10’s turn to experience a little bit of life in the country, when they travelled to Boonah and its surrounds for their unit “When a Girl Comes to Town” – an inquiry into a “tree change” lifestyle. We arrived in the town for very informative talks by the Mayor of the Scenic Rim Council, John Brent, and Manager of Community and Culture, Genevieve Windley. We thank both for so generously giving their time. The cohort then split up into two groups, half visiting Mrs Beryl Hall’s host farm “Vanbery Cottage” and the other half visiting Kalfresh Vegetables, a fresh produce business which caters for a large percentage of our vegetable needs. This was an excellent way for the students to get a “taste” of very different types of businesses operating in the local area. The groups finished up back in the town centre for a quick lunch and some interviewing time and then it was back on the bus for the journey back to school. On this trip we also have a lot of people to thank, not only the Scenic Rim Council but also Mrs Beryl Hall from Vanbery Cottage and Mr Robert Heinrichsen of Kalfresh, both of whom were so accommodating of us and gave excellent talks to the girls. We would also like to sincerely thank our parents who came on the day: Mr Rob and Mrs Naomi Jansen (Tayla 10 Bl), Liz Mastry (Brigette 10 Gr) and Linda Bell ( Aislind 10 Re); your assistance with supervision on the day was immensely appreciated. Finally, thank you to the Year 10 Geography Teachers, Mrs Valentine, Mrs Dawes, Mrs Matheson and Ms McGowan who helped make the day a big success. I think we can safely say the whole week was very geographically educational and will greatly help the girls when it comes to putting together their assessment tasks. Music News Years 9 - 12 All classroom students are now into an intense period of creating their own compositions. Year 9 are writing blues songs, Year 10 are working on piano pieces in Theme and Variation form, Year 11s are either creating their own mini-musicals or writing sound tracks for film excerpts, and Year 12s are creating fusions of genres and styles. It promises to be a very interesting couple of weeks! Lunchtime Recital Term Three Lunchtime Music Recitals will be held next Thursday 28 and Friday 29 August. Any students who would like to take this opportunity to practice for an upcoming exam or classroom music assessment performance should sign up on the Music Noticeboard. Year 10 Camp Year 10 Camp forms were due on Monday 11 August. We would appreciate the return of any overdue forms to the office this week. Certain medical conditions require an additional form to provide more detailed medical information or medical certification from a doctor. These additional medical forms need to be returned to the school office by Monday 1 September.
Year 10 Evatt Youth UN Council Congratulations to Aislind Bell, Erin Littler, Kitty Lloyd, Lauren Michael, Priyanka Mirchandani and Alex White on their participation in the Preliminary Round of the Youth UN Council debate. The students joined 26 other students from schools around Brisbane to debate two resolutions based on topical subjects in current affairs. It was really encouraging to see these young women approach this opportunity with a positive, collegial attitude and a willingness to learn. We had 18 ensembles play and every single one made us very proud. Most importantly, the students rose to the occasion of playing at different venues in front of adjudicators and unfamiliar crowds. It is expected that All members of these two groups make themselves available for the afternoon concert AND for as many students as possible to help with another session at some stage during the day. We are very understanding of assessment, particularly for senior girls – and know that there will be some Year 11 and 12 students for whom the concert is the only thing they can attend on the day. For the majority of students, especially in the younger year levels, I am sure you can spare the time to come to one extra session to help out. Sports Department CaSSSA Hockey Our season ended on a great note with some tight matches and good quality hockey being played. Both the Open A and Open B teams represented Loreto admirably all season, showing great skill, tenacity and most importantly teamwork. The teams ended up 6th and 7th on the ladder respectively which are solid results considering the very high quality of the competition. A big thank you to our coaches, Ellen Carey and Melanie McEwan who worked hard with the girls and did a great job balancing skill work, fitness drills and fun at training sessions. I am particularly proud of the dedication and commitment both teams displayed every week with fantastic attendance rates at training and for matches despite it being a very busy time of the school year. Well done girls and thank you for a great season of hockey. Matt Lourigan - Hockey Coordinator CaSSSA Athletics Loreto College will be taking up to 95 athletes to compete in the Catholic Secondary School Girls Sport competition on Monday 26 August 2014. The athletes will catch a bus at 7.15 am to QE11 on the day of the carnival. A letter will be distributed to the Athletics Team including program details this week. The Year 11 students will be spectators on the day of the carnival. The students will be transported out to the QE11 Athletics track at the ANZ stadium. The students will leave school directly after Homeroom and return to school around 2.45pm to take the normal buses home. School will finish at normal time for all students including the athletes. All students are expected to attend the carnival and wear full school uniform including their hat. It is strongly advised that the girls bring a packed lunch for the day. If you have any further enquiries please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Fiona Meecham (Year 11 Coordinator) or Mrs Meg Stevens in the Sport Office. Athletics Squad 2014 Athletics training is encouraged for athletes on Tuesday afternoon at QEII. A bus will transport the girls to and from the stadium. All girls must register their name at the Sports Office for a seat on the bus. The last Relay session is the 24 August 2014 at QE11, Nathan. All 100m runners are expected to attend the session from 3.00pm to 4.30pm. The Athletics Squad will receive a letter detailing the event and program for the day. A letter will emailed this week to all students about the details of trials and registration. If students are interested they may want to attend a Come and Try program with the Warriors Water Polo Club on 24 and 31 August and 7 September at the Clem Jones Centre, Zahel Road, Carina. The sessions are 3.00pm to 4.30pm .
CaSSSA Soccer The soccer teams had their last game for the season on Wednesday 6 August. Unfortunately, our Open A team were unable to defend their title from last season and Mt Alvernia proved too good on the day winning 3-0. The Open C team played out a 0-0 draw against Our Lady’s College capping off a good season. Junior A played their best game of the season losing 1-0. Injuries had a significant impact on this team and they played with a person down for the last game. Finally, the Junior C team also finished the season well, winning their final match against St Rita’s 2-1. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Coaches:- Richard Hamernik – Open A, Mark Youngjohns – Open C, Mr Rawding – Junior A and Luke Duncan – Junior C. I would also like to thank the teachers for supporting the students and supervising on buses and at games and Mrs Stevens and Mrs Wilkinson for their support and organisation. Businesses connected with our Loreto community, such as real estate agents, food and beverage suppliers, and retailers are invited to submit an expression of interest, to display their business at the festival. Business categories will be determined by ‘first-in-best-dressed’ and are imagined to include a 3 x 3 metre stand, logo displays and suitable promotional material. High School Projects Abroad 2014/2015 Places are still available for High School Volunteer Projects for 2014/15 – and it's not too late to get involved! The High School Projects are a constructive, busy and well supervised introduction to service in the developing world. The two week trips attract students from all over Australia, New Zealand and beyond; students in Year 10 and 11 can choose to join the groups individually or with friends. The volunteer trips are running this summer in December and January – with Care and Community Projects in Cambodia, Nepal, Vietnam, Fiji and Sri Lanka, and a Medicine & Healthcare Project in Nepal. The projects are an opportunity to experience a different culture and make a positive impact in a local community whilst in a safe supported group. All the projects are a great balance of volunteer work and cultural activities. An interactive online information session will be held on 25 August, this is a chance to learn what each project entails and how they are run while being able to ask questions. P&F News Parent Forum If you want to play a greater role in your daughter’s education, we have a couple of forthcoming opportunities. On Sunday 24 August we will be conducting a ‘Parent Forum’ to discuss the P&F’s objectives and consider how they need to be refined to better align with those of the school. The forum is being held on a Sunday to make it accessible to as many people as possible and, given the day and time, coffee and croissants will be served. The event starts at 9.30am and will be held on the top floor of the Mulwith building which is located at the corner of Lade and Dale Streets. It is anticipated that it should not take any longer than 90 minutes. As RSVPs are essential for catering, email your name and number of people attending to Trish Willing by Thursday 21 August.
AGM On Tuesday 2 September we will hold our annual general meeting to determine who will sit on the committee for 2015. We invite nominations for the positions of President, Vice-President (2), Treasurer and Secretary. A nomination form is on the next page. Some of the current office holders may choose to nominate once again, but others won't as their daughters are finishing Year 12 at the end of the year. Any parents not able to commit to a formal role are welcome to attend the AGM and other meetings or provide support in other areas.
