Volume 8 - 18 March, 2014 Dear Parents & Students As we enter the last week of classes before the end-of-term exams, I am mindful that this can be a “pressure-point”, not only for the students but also for the staff. I thus offer this reflection taken from “the Loreto Prayer Book”.

“God, you are my pace-setter” I shall not rush, you make me stop and rest for quiet intervals.

You provide me with images of stillness which restores my serenity.

You lead me in ways of efficiency through calmness of mind and your guidance is peace.

Even though I have a great many things to accomplish this day I will not fret, for your presence is here.

Your timelessness, your all-importance will keep me in balance.

You prepare refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity by anointing my mind with your oils of tranquillity.

My cup of joyous energy overflows.

Surely harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruit of my hours.

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU 

To the Swimming Squad on your every effort given in preparation for last week’s CaSSSA Cup. You were all wonderful and you gave your best. Thank you. To the Cheer Squad, I also extend high praise: your Loreto sense of spirit was highly evident for all to see and I was so very proud of you all. I offer special thanks to Mrs Stevens for her coordination and to the Loreto staff, coaches and helpers who made the day possible.



To the magnificent singers, dancers, musicians, support crew, backstage crew, costume crew, designers, helpers and everyone associated with the Musical, I offer my sincere congratulations and thanks. It was a superb production: entertaining, polished and very professional. Those involved have every reason to celebrate the show’s success. You provided quality entertainment that was an absolute pleasure to watch. Thank you for your countless hours of rehearsal and effort. Particular thanks to Villanova’s Directors and Producers for their overall coordination and leadership.

Villa students and staff have heard me say previously that, in Australia, it’s very difficult to make a living in the arts … which is somewhat ironic because it is quite frequently the arts that make the life we have worth living!! And this was no less evident to those privileged to be in the audience and experience Crazy For You. The quality of the singing, acting, music, set design, costume design … in fact the entire production … was of such a consistently high standard throughout, it was very easy to forget that one was watching a school production! I saw Friday evening’s performance with my youngest daughter and a family friend. I had told them beforehand that they were in for a treat. Little did they expect the extraordinary treat they received!! My sincere congratulations and thanks to all associated with the show … it truly was remarkable and memorable.”

To Rebecca Marshall and Madeleine Lloyd (Year 12) on their wins in the Lions Youth of the Year Zone Finals and on their success in making the Regional Finals which were held last weekend. Both girls performed to very high standards with Rebecca Marshall winning the round. We wish Rebecca well as she now competes in the District Finals at Tweed Heads this weekend. Thanks to Mrs Rosemary O’Neill for her coordination, coaching and support.

Career News High School Projects destinations and dates announced for 2014 Projects Abroad are extremely excited to announce their High School Projects for 2014! The High School Projects are a jam-packed two week group trip with students from all over Australia, New Zealand and around the globe. Students in Year 10 and 11 (11 & 12 in NZ) - typically aged 16 and 17 - can choose to join the groups individually or with friends.

The volunteer trips will run this summer from December 7 to December 20 in Cambodia, Fiji, Sri Lanka and two in Nepal – a Medicine & Healthcare Project and the other, Care & Community.

The projects are a rich mixture of volunteer work and cultural activities, so you can really get to know the country you're in!

From helping children in Cambodia or becoming part of a traditional village community in Fiji, to shadowing doctors in Nepal or working with disadvantaged children in Sri Lanka – there is sure to be a project which interests you! Why not make these summer holidays unforgettable and travel with a purpose to a developing community a world away!

Drama Ecumenical Women’s Day of Prayer On 7 March, the Year 9 Drama A girls performed a prayerful and moving performance at St Matthew’s Anglican Church, Holland Park for World Council of Churches’ Day of ecumenical prayer. The focus was on “The Women of Egypt”. The girls used narration, choral work, physical theatre and freeze frames to relay the four stories about women in Egypt. They are to be congratulated on their fine performance and perfect behaviour! They were true ambassadors for Loreto. Congratulations, girls!

Geography News Gemma Sisia Visit - Social Justice in Action Last Wednesday, as part of studying their current unit “Striving for Global Equality”, the Year 10 Geography students were treated to a very special visit by Gemma Sisia, the Australian founder of the School of St Jude, a school devoted to breaking the cycle of poverty through education in Tanzania. Gemma spoke to the students about her journey in establishing the school which now supports over 1800 of the country’s poorest students over their entire schooling. It was incredible to hear of the complexities involved in selecting potential students for the school as they not only have to be from the poorest in the nation but need to have an absolute passion for wanting to learn. Likewise, it was inspiring to hear of Gemma and her team’s devotion to seeing these students through to the next phase of tertiary studies, in the hope they will be able to give back to their own community on completion of their courses. At the end of the session, the students asked Gemma some very interesting questions and then presented Gemma with a donation of $500 to put towards her funding of these students on behalf of the Geography Department and the Year 10 Geography cohort. Thank you to all of these students and their Geography teachers for their generosity. I think it is fair to say that Gemma is a true example of our own Mary Ward’s words “Women in time will come to do much”. Mary Ward Connect 2014 Loreto Marryatville, Adelaide On Tuesday 4 March I had the pleasure of accompanying Brittany di Savia, Billie Kingston, Tea Marinov, Mia Munch, Rebecca Smith and Cara Wing from Year Ten Loreto Coorparoo on the Mary Ward exchange program to Loreto Marryatville in Adelaide. During this trip the girls made new connections and were wonderful representatives of our school.

We arrived at Loreto Marryatville at the end of the school day and we spent the afternoon at the boarding house. Before the other visiting students from Loreto Kirribilli in Sydney and their accompanying teacher Mrs Tait arrived, we were given a tour of the boarding facilities by the Year Ten boarders at Marryatville. After the other group had arrived and were introduced, the boarders enthusiastically took their visitors to the local shops for ice cream. When they came back it was time for the girls to meet their host sisters and families during a barbeque dinner put on by our host school.

Wednesday was spent at Loreto Marryatville. The day began with the girls' giving a successful presentation to the junior school where they were asked questions about their uniform and the new building to accommodate the incoming Year Seven students.

This presentation was repeated for the Year Ten students who have fond memories of their past principal, our current principal, Mrs Hamilton. The remainder of the day was spent on a tour of the school and attending classes with their hosts.

On Thursday, along with all Year Ten students at Marryatville, we were treated to a walking tour of Adelaide. We started by Adelaide Oval and walked along the River Torrens. We continued past the South Australian Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia to end up at the Botanical Gardens. Unfortunately it was too wet to stay there and have morning tea on the lawns so we continued on to our main stop of the day, Adelaide Zoo. After something to eat, students were split into smaller groups to explore the zoo. The challenge they were given was to find animals starting with each letter of the alphabet and get a photo of their group with the animal. We saw giraffes, lions, meerkats, hippopotamus, penguins and one of the main attractions, the Giant Pandas Wang Wang and Funi. Everyone had a wonderful day and our students and their host sisters finished the day in the city.

Our time in Adelaide went by too quickly and all of a sudden it was time for goodbyes. Before the school day began photos were taken with Marryatville's Mary Ward statue which had been decorated for International Women's Day. Students accompanied their host sisters to one more class before visiting the junior school one last time where they had been invited to read with students of one of the Reception classes. At morning tea, sadly, it was time to say farewell Marryatville and the new friends they had made before taking a taxi to the airport and making the return journey to Brisbane.

I would like to thank all the girls for making my job so effortless during the week. It was a pleasure to accompany such well-mannered and delightful students and I am sure that they have made some enduring friendships.

Music Department Congratulations To all students and staff on the huge success of the musical “Crazy For You”. It was such a fantastic production, and took a huge amount of effort to put together. Thank you to all students and staff that participated – whether you were involved as a Lead, Chorus Member, Pit Orchestra, Crew, Usher, Hair & Make-up, Supervisor, Fundraiser….or any one of the many, many other jobs required, you should be proud of your efforts and the amazing show that you put together!

Music Extension Recital The five Senior students in our Music Extension Class will perform a short assessed concert tonight (Tuesday 18 March) from 6pm to approximately 6:45pm on the MWC stage. Entry is free so come along and support some of our school’s finest musicians!

Year 11/12 Music Excursion Seeing music performed live is a vibrant experience that provides a very different perspective to simply listening to recordings in the classroom. For this reason, each year we take classroom music students to a variety of professional concerts to enrich their learning. We will soon move into the Year 11 unit “Music of the Stage and Screen” and the Year 12 unit “Great Moments of Music”, where students study significant works that combine musical composition with other elements such as stage production. Therefore we will be taking the senior classes (11 and 12) to see “The King and I” on Wednesday 21 May at the Lyric Theatre. The ticket price is covered by the school, however as the performance is in the evening it is our expectation that parents will organise transport to and from QPAC for their daughters. Further details, such as exact times and tickets collection information, will be disseminated closer to the performance evening.

Year 11 and 12 Fashion Students ‘ Crazy for You’ A big thank you must be given to the Year 11 and 12 fashion students for their efforts in designing and constructing the two sets of costumes for the Follies dancers for the 2014 “Crazy for You” Musical. This was an assessable class activity that took the first six weeks of class time to complete. The girls worked tirelessly to learn the skills needed to complete this major task for the term – designing, drawing, pattern-making, constructing, trimming and presenting – all in a very tight time frame.

Congratulations to both Ciane Gallenti-Guilfoyle and Sabrina Pennisi for their winning designs for the two costumes. For those many people who saw the final production of the musical, I am sure you enjoyed the very bright and glitzy pink and silver costumes worn by our beautiful Follies dancers.

A special thank you also goes to Mrs Jane Ridgeway for her skills and help with finishing the fringing on the silver costumes.

Music Big Band Rehearsals will now move to Friday afternoons for the remainder of the year, finishing at 5 pm each week. In preparation for the start of Symphony Orchestra, we will make this change this week, so our first Friday rehearsal is this Friday 21 March!

Loreto Music Festival Entries for our internal Music Festival opened last week! You can enter as a vocal or instrumental soloist, in a duet, acoustic ensemble or a band and sections are available for all ages and experience levels. Auditions will start in on May 5 next term but entries close this Friday 21 March. Check the morning notices for a link to the online entry forms.

Lunchtime Recitals This week we will run our first Lunchtime Musical Recitals, providing students in the Private Tuition program with an opportunity to perform their solo/duet works in concerts for their peers. These are very popular and well-received events and the response from students this term has been so great that we will actually run two concerts this week, on Thursday AND Friday lunchtimes on the Mary Ward Centre Stage. Staff and students are invited to come along to be an audience and parents are also most welcome to attend. To provide students with an example of good performance practice and demonstration of advanced techniques on their instruments, this year we will also be asking some of the Music Tutors to perform at end of each Recital! To kick things off Mr Langford will perform “The Whirlwind Polka” at the end of Thursday’s Recital. Dr Svoboda will then perform at the finish of Friday’s event! Come and see the teachers get just as nervous as the students - definitely concerts not to be missed! Rehearsal Changes Now that the Musical has been completed, we will revert to our regular ensembles and rehearsal schedule. Please note the following significant changes: Symphony Orchestra Now that the Musical production is behind us, it is time to start up the combined Loreto/Villanova Symphony Orchestra for 2014. After our auditions at the end of last year we published a list of students who have been nominated from Loreto to participate in the Orchestra. We have now put this list together with the nominations from Villanova and will publish a final Orchestra list on the Music Noticeboard early this week. Rehearsals will begin next week, and will be held on Monday afternoons in Villanova’s Hanrahan Theatre. As has been done previously, students will meet at the Music Office directly after Monday Period 7 (without going to homeroom) and the school will provide bus transport to Villanova. Parents are asked to organised collection of their daughters from Villanova’s Sixth Avenue entrance at 5 pm each Monday. If any parents intend to provide transport for their daughters and/or her friends instead of sending them on the bus, please contact Mr Langford at the Music Office to organise this (langfordb@loreto.qld.edu.au).

Public Speaking Rostrum Girls are reminded that registration for Rostrum closes this week. Those participating are asked to attend a meeting on Tuesday.

Lions Youth of the Year It is with great pride that we congratulate Madeleine Lloyd and Rebecca Marshall who participated in the Regional Final last Saturday. The girls were individually interviewed by a panel of three for half an hour. They then spoke – with no preparation - on two impromptu topics: Just fourteen years ago CSIRO invented WIFI. Since then the world has changed forever with people communicating with business and socially with mobile technology and social media. In another fourteen years when you are thirty or so, what values do you hold as important that could be affected both negatively and positively by further development?

What does being an Australian now and in the future mean to you?

After this, they presented their prepared speeches. Maddie spoke on Youth and Politics and Rebecca spoke on Social Media.

Both girls were articulate, confident, knowledgeable and engaging in all three areas.

We congratulate them and thank them for representing Loreto so well and for giving so many early mornings, after school and lunch breaks to their preparation. The judges remarked that both girls were “very impressive”. In a very tight decision, the judges announced that the overall winner was Rebecca Marshall. Well done, Rebecca!

This means that Rebecca moves forward to the District Final at Tweed Heads on Saturday 29 March. Rebecca, we wish you well!

Caritas - Project Compassion

This year Shrove Tuesday was celebrated with the help of Mr Justin Knudson (father of Mia in 9 Blue). Mr Knudson generously donated his time, expertise and ingredients to make this lunchtime activity an enormous success. As can be seen in the attached photo, the Caritas girls rolled up their sleeves and tackled the task of serving 400 crepes with sheer professionalism.

Congratulations must go to all the Caritas volunteers from Years 8 - 12, for their dedication and commitment to this activity. The work of the girls and the support from the community raised $642.

CaSSSA Swimming Carnival On Thursday 13 March the Inaugural CaSSSA swim carnival was hosted by Loreto College. The competition was strong at this level, yet the Loreto team did their best placing 7th in the Percentage Trophy. I was able to witness some inspiring performances on the day. An excellent effort to the team members who accomplished personal best performances. A special thank you to the Swim Captains, Michelle Godwin and Hannah Wixted, for their work and support on the day. Loreto College were awarded 7th in the Aggregate overall.

The Age Champion results were as follows: 13 years Aggregate – 7th 14 years Aggregate – 6th 15 years Aggregate – 6th 16 years Aggregate – 8th 17 years Aggregate – 8th Open Events Aggregate - 6th A sincere thank you to Ms Kristin Hatch (Swim Coach) for her hard work with the team throughout the season. A very special thank you to the assistant coach and Loreto past Swim Captain, Samantha Firrell. A thank you to the parents of the swimmers who have supported and transported the girls to the early morning training. Well done to the Year 8 and 12 students, Sport Council, and staff who supported the competitors. A sincere thank you to Year 12 students and staff at Loreto College and who worked tirelessly on the day to assist in the smooth running of the program. Congratulations to all swimmers for their hard work and contribution to the team.

The Loreto Cross Country training is as follows: Monday - 3.30pm to 4.45pm Tuesday - 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm, Thursday - 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm There will be a Sunday session starting 23 March at 4.00pm to 5.00pm, meeting at White Hill reserve.

Soccer Trials On Monday 24 March, the Year 10, 11 and 12 girls will trial for the Open Soccer teams from 3:30pm-5:00pm. On Tuesday 25 March the Year 8 and 9 girls will trial for the Junior Soccer Teams, also from 3:30pm-5:00pm. Shin pads will be available and if students own football boots and mouth guards, they are encouraged to wear them. P & F News P&F Student Dance ‘Once Upon a Time’ the theme for the P&F Student Dance this Friday 21 March at 7pm is almost here!. P&F Student Dance A reminder that this is a CLOSED dance (no one can leave before 10.00 pm without a parent to pick them up) for Loreto students and boys from invited schools. Admission is $12.00. Current student ID is also required. The following rules of entry apply: 

No stiletto heels . Coats and bags are to be left in the cloak room before the dance

Respectable dress standards are required.

Please take particular note of the last point and do not embarrass yourself or the parent volunteers by being inappropriately dressed. International Women’s Fun Run Last Sunday, March 9, 78 Loreto College students, staff, parents, past students and one former student ran or walked their way over 5km to support International Women’s Day as well as supporting fundraising for cancer treatment and research.

Sixteen runners finished in under 30 minutes with Ciera Stafford being the first Loreto Swifts team member home in 20:55 and Georgina Coote taking 24: 30 to be second Loreto student home. Congratulations to staff member, Mrs Waite, who was fourth home for Loreto Swifts in 26:30.

Particular mention to the following students for their outstanding fundraising efforts: Ruby-Leigh O’Brien ($250) Grace King ($170) Sophie Dibley( $150).

Thanks to Kristina Lecatsas for assisting in encouraging students to participate and helping distribute race packs.

What is slavery-free chocolate?

It's chocolate that is free from exploitative labour practices.

Presently children as young as 12 years old are picking cocoa in West Africa to make the chocolate we eat.

Some of these children are trafficked. Most are forced to pick cocoa from an early age for minimal or no wages, for long hours, in dangerous working conditions, without any possibility of attending school.

Campaign success so far

Efforts to promote chocolate that has been ethically sourced via slavery-free supply chains are already having an effect in Australia.

Comparison of three coffee labels:

Five years ago Australian supermarkets did not have any Easter chocolate certified as slavery-free, but in 2013 there were at least six slavery-free Easter eggs and rabbits manufactured by Green and Black, Cadbury and Chocolatier.

A global movement has begun to change this. The movement tackles poverty and empowers producers through trade. When you choose your chocolate this Easter, or anytime, look for a label that shows the cocoa has been sourced ethically. That means it doesn't come from the sweat and tears of children, trafficked or in forced labour in West Africa.
