Volume 4 - 17 February, 2015 Dear Parents & Students As we enter the season of Lent, an important focus of which is reflection, I invite you to join us in the tradition of the “Ignatian Examen” – our Loreto way of daily prayer and reflection – based on the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. The “Examen” is a structured personal review of each day, employed to discover God’s movements and actions within our daily life.

This Lent, I invite you to take a few moments to do the ‘Examen’ as your daily form of reflection;

Begin by thanking God for the good things that have happened: focus on one encounter, experience of nature or moment of peace. Take time to enjoy this memory in all its fullness.

Ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to guide you as you reflect on the day.

Play your day through in your head.

If you can remember something or someone affecting you, how did it make you feel?

Stay with that feeling and think about it.

What does it say that is important to you at this time?

Take a final few minutes to talk with God about this aspect of your life. Is this leading you towards your best self or away from what you hope to become?

Ask for God’s help to live tomorrow with love and gratitude. Amen.

WELCOME DAY FOR PARENTS On Monday 23 February we warmly welcome Parents into the school to spend some time in your daughter’s classroom and to experience being part of a typical day in the life of Loreto. All parents are invited to join us, for whatever time you can afford.

However, as visitors it will be important for you to please sign in and out through the front Reception. Your daughter will be able to show you how to do this.

If you are able to stay for Morning Tea, please join the staff in Cruci for refreshments, lovingly prepared by our Year 11 Hospitality students. Also, if you are staying for Assembly (at 11.45am), please join us in the Mary Ward Centre on the Mezzanine level.

CONGRATULATIONS 

To the House Leaders on the success of their first major event for the year, the Interhouse Swimming Carnival. Their organisation, teamwork, leadership, spirit and co-operation were all evident. The atmosphere at the carnival was jubilant and spirited with wonderfully high levels of participation. Thanks of course go to Mrs Stevens, the Sports department and the Staff for their efforts and support.

Congratulations to Mornane House on this year’s close win and to Ward House on winning the Spirit points. Well done to all swimmers and Houses and especially to the Age Champions.



To Georgia Johnson (Year 12) who has been selected as part of the Queensland Womens’ U19 Beach Volleyball Team to compete in Adelaide at the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships, in April. We wish her every success.

Georgia has also once again been selected in the Australian Junior Womens’ Development Program which involves a tour to the USA in July.

Just to inform you that there is a child within our school who is immunosuppressed, meaning that this child has a lower immunity and cannot fight infections in the normal way.

Viruses that cause measles, chickenpox and shingles could make this child extremely unwill. Therefore I would be grateful if you would contact the school immediately if your child was found to have one of these illnesses. If we know that there has been exposure to measles, chickenpox or shingles, medicine can be given to lessen the side effect of such an infection to this child. This medicine does need to be given as soon as possible after the contact has taken place.

I must assure you that your child is not at risk because of this child.

Welcome Day for Parents Parents are invited to attend the Loreto College Welcome Day on Monday 23 February.

It is an opportunity for you to sit in on your daughter’s classes and to see what happens in a day at Loreto. You can stay for the whole day or come for one lesson. It’s up to you! You will probably be sitting at the back of the room observing as classes will continue with their activities.

A number of exciting things will happen on that day. Parents are invited to Cruci for a special morning tea served by the Hospitality students. There is also a whole school Assembly in Period 4 in the Mary Ward Centre.

It is important that you sign in and out at the office, regardless of how long you stay. College maps will be available there to help you find your way to your daughter’s classrooms.

We look forward to welcoming parents to a day at Loreto!

Pastoral Care - Tips for a Healthy Breakfast Lisa Petersen is a past student and now a dietician. She has spoken to senior students as part of their Personal Development Program and will be providing advice on healthy eating to parents and students via our newsletter each Term this year.

School mornings can be the bane of many parents’ lives. The start to a school day can be extremely hectic - adolescent children waking up late, a mad rush to finish last minute homework and assignments and arguments over who is going to use the shower first … there is no wonder breakfast often gets forgotten.

It’s absolutely essential that adolescents eat something to ‘break-their-fast’ so that the first two periods of a school day are started with focus, energy and excitement rather than a fuzzy brain, constant yawning and eyes that can hardly stay open.

A balanced breakfast should include a protein and carbohydrate source to help with both energy and satiety. Choosing wholegrain breads and cereals is the best place to start as they are low GI and therefore help maintain even energy levels until morning tea time. Protein sources help with satiety and will make sure no tummies are rumbling by 9am.

If you have a bit of time, a hot breakfast such as short cut bacon with an egg on a wholemeal muffin OR a ham, cheese, tomato sandwich on multigrain bread is a perfect start to the day. Otherwise, a simple bowl of low GI, higher fibre cereal is a lighter option on a hot day. Some of my favourite cereals include Special K Advantage, Guardian, Weetbix and Sustain paired with low fat milk and piece of fruit – the kids will be satisfied until first break. If time is of the essence, as it is for so many families, throw a tub of low fat Greek yoghurt with a handful of nuts and a handful of berries into a container to eat in the car on the way to school.

Often, parents revert to having high sugar breakfast drinks and cereals available as an easy alternative to all of the above which will result in poor eating habits long term as well as leaving the kids hungry after half an hour or so. Remember – if sugary snacks and white bread aren’t in the house, they can’t be eaten!

Loreto College Cashless Tuckshop Loreto College is always seeking to make your interactions with the school more convenient and secure and that’s why we engaged Flexischools to provide a cashless way to use the school tuckshop.

This system allows parents or students to place an Online Order for the tuckshop from home, work or school at any time via the internet or your mobile device. Students can also use their Student Card to purchase items over the tuckshop counter.

This cashless card system has been live since the beginning of Term 3, 2014.

The Loreto tuckshop is completely cashless so if your daughter is to use the tuckshop, you must have set up a Flexischools account for her.

Student Card Payments Students can now use their student card to purchase goods at the tuckshop.

Parents set up a Flexischools account online and pre-load their account with funds. Students can make purchases at the tuckshop by swiping their card at the cash register. Parents can, if they wish, view their daughter’s purchases online and can set a daily spending limit on the student’s card. The cards do not carry any financial information on them and connect to a secure database here at school. When a student makes a purchase her photo appears on the cash register screen ensuring another student’s card cannot be used. If a student loses a card it can be disabled very quickly and a student issued with a new one. Once replaced with a new card the old card cannot be used for purchases as part of the security process.

Online Ordering Parents and students will be able to order from the tuckshop online up to 9:30 in the morning. The payment for this is also done online, so you no longer need to send cash or a paper order to school. As well as being convenient for parents, the online orders are more accurate and much faster for the tuckshop to operate.

Set Up Your Account Setting up an account for either Online Ordering or Card Payments is done online and only takes a minute. Once you know your daughter’s Loreto Student Number you are able to register. For Year 7 and Year 8 students starting in 2015, they have been given their Loreto Student Number when they started school. Once you have your daughter’s Loreto Student number, simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click Register. If you have a son or daughter in another school and have already set up a Flexischools account, you can simply add your daughter to your existing account. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. You can activate the card payments during the online registration by entering your student card number indicated on the student card.

A few tips for registration are below.

1.

Ensure that your daughter has activated her card at school and you link your daughter’s Loreto ID card to the account you have setup. When you link the card number you must use your daughter’s student number which begins with an ‘s’ for student eg. s1977323. Please use a lower case ‘s’ at the beginning of the student ID number.

2.

If you set a daily cash limit on this account your daughter will not be able to purchase anything that goes over this limit. You may like to review the tuckshop menu before you set this limit. If you do an online order this limit does not apply.

3.

There also needs to be sufficient funds in your Flexischools’ account if your daughter is to be able to buy from the tuckshop. You may consider enabling an auto top on your account once it reaches a certain level to alleviate this problem.

The system operates via a pre-paid account, so you don’t need to scrounge for coins in the morning and can easily budget for your spending throughout the term. There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, MasterCard (credit and debit), PayPal and Bank Transfer. Some top-up methods have fees or restrictions – please check online for details.

What does it cost?

Student Card payments at the canteen attract no transaction fee, but online pre-orders of food incur a 25c fee per order. Bank Transfers are free but cause a delay for the funds to reach us. Credit Card payments are online and immediate, but incur a 29c fee, which is similar for PayPal, but the fee is 35c.

Art Department An integral part of the study of Art is the investigation of how other artists use visual language to communicate ideas. This week the Year Eleven and Twelve Creative Art students worked with practising artist Wendy Winsley to develop skills in creating hand built ceramic tiles for mosaic. They also explored how their initial ideas for their symbolic ‘Bird House’ design could be refined and extended to communicate their theme. An excursion to QAG and Goma gave Year Eleven Visual Art students the opportunity to engage with works ranging from a still life painting by Alexander Coosemans, c.1650, to German artist, Michael Sailstorfer’s installation, Wolken (Clouds), made from tyre inner tubes as they developed their understanding of the significance of ‘the object’ in a range of different contexts. Year Twelve Visual Art students engagement with works from the exhibitions Sublime: Contemporary works from the Collection and We can make another future: Japanese art after 1989 will help to inform their own art practice as they embark on the Body of Work One which requires students to be self-directed in their selection of Focus and the development of their own visual language. Language Department News It has been an enjoyable and eventful start to the year in the Languages Department both in and outside the classroom. Firstly we are excited to have introduced Chinese as a subject for students in Years 7 and 8. As a result, we have warmly welcomed Mrs Lu Liu to Loreto as teacher of Chinese. In addition to learning one term of Chinese, girls in Years 7 and 8 will in fact study a term of French, German and Japanese throughout their first year at the College. As part of their studies, these girls will use Language Perfect, an online computer program which assists in the development of language proficiency through games, questions and vocabulary acquisition. Students are able to access this program at school and at home. From all accounts, Language Perfect is proving very popular amongst the girls!

During the holidays, 21 of the current Year 11 and 12 French students went to France with Ms Amy Stewart, Mrs Nat Dawes and Ms Jess Badke. The girls were hosted by families from our sister school, St Joseph de Tivoli, in Bordeaux where they also attended classes. After the homestay, the group travelled to Paris, visiting the Loire Valley, Chartres and many other beautiful locations on the way. We look forward to seeing the presentation of the French Exchange Program during the school assembly on Monday 23 February.

Preparations for the German Exchange Program at the end of the year are also well underway. Families of girls who are travelling to Germany are reminded that there will be a parent information evening on Monday 23 February at 7:00pm in room 421 (at the top of the Casket Building). It is not too long until we welcome visitors from our sister school, the Maria Ward Schule, in Bad Homburg. These girls will be at Loreto at the end of April and they are especially looking forward to visiting our German classes.

On a more local level, Year 12 French students have been invited to attend a “Taste of French” afternoon at the University of Queensland on Thursday 19 February. This event aims to give Year 12 students an idea of what is taught in French lectures at university and should be a valuable experience for those girls who have chosen to attend.

Music Camp Lost Property A new “Black Wolf” brand sleeping bag was lost during the concert at the end of Music Camp. If anyone has found this item, or mixed it up with their own, could you please bring it to the Music Office so that it can be returned to its owner? I also currently have in the Music Office a large red and green sleeping bag, in a black Coleman Pilbara C3 bag, left over from the Music Camp. Please claim this item if it is yours.

Music Support Group Last Wednesday it was lovely to see a large number of new faces at the Music Support Group Welcome supper. If you could not make it, don’t worry! There will be plenty of more opportunities to attend meetings, participate in social events and help out with concerts this year. Meeting dates are generally the second Wednesday of each month, with the occasional shift to the third Wednesday due to placement of holidays. Meetings for this year will be on the following dates: 11 March, 22 April, 13 May, 10 June, 22 July, 19 August, 9 September, 14 October, 11 November.

Sorelle Performance Sorelle has been invited to perform at All Hallows School on Saturday 14 March in a short concert celebrating International Women’s Day. I do not yet have all details for this event, but the concert will start at 7pm so I expect that arrival time would need to be closer to 6pm. If parents and students could please put this date in their calendars, I will pass on more information as soon as it comes to hand!

Junior Drama Club The Year 12 Drama Council welcomed over 70 enthusiastic students from Years 7 and 8 to Junior Drama Club last Monday afternoon. The girls bring with them a vast range of experience in the Performing Arts and were open and willing to immerse themselves in all of the activities the Seniors prepared. The first few weeks will include a wide variety of Drama games to build self-confidence, physical awareness and develop improvisational skills.

I wish to thank the Senior students for the dedication and enthusiasm they displayed. They are a fine example of how Drama develops confident and capable young women. I hope that the younger girls embrace the opportunity to make new friends and continue to enjoy their time in Junior Drama Club.

Public Speaking Lions Youth of the Year Since our last newsletter, Loreto has one more competitor for Lions. Welcome aboard Amelia Abdelrazek (Year 11)! On Sunday 8 February, Lauren Causer had her 45 minute interview with the Carindale Club. The interviews consist of questions on personal aspirations, activities, leadership goals, politics and current affairs. This weekend, Amelia Abdelrazek and Siobhan Setch are being interviewed by the Macgregor Club. Prepared and Impromptu speeches are on Tuesday 17 February for these girls, while Rachel Larkin has her interview and speech on Sunday 22 February. If anyone is interested in attending these events, please see Mrs O’Neill for details.

Rostrum Voice of Youth Rostrum has advised that their registrations are now open and close on March 20. The heats will be May 2 and May 3 at QUT Campus. If you are interested in learning more about Public Speaking and our first general competition, please attend a meeting on Wednesday 18 at 12.40pm in 222. Hope to see some good numbers!

Public Speaking Why do it? It builds confidence, aids in speech-making and delivery, allows you to express your own opinion and broadens the mind with what is happening in the world around us. Be brave and try it out!

Sports Department Swim for Fitness and Stroke Development Swim for Fitness Training runs on Wednesday and Friday morning at the Loreto pool from 6.30am to 8.00am. It is recommended that all water polo players try to attend one session for fitness.

Loreto Tennis Competition The start time for the games are as follows: Year 7 and 8 Teams (Junior teams) Warm up 10.30am and start time at 11.00am Year 9 and 10 (Intermediate teams) Warm up at 7.00am and start time at 7.30am Year 11 and 12 (Open and Senior) Warm up 10.30am and start time 11.00am Players will need to wear their PE uniform with the skirt and Loreto cap, and bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a racquet.

Loreto Interschool Swim Squad The Interschool swim squad for 2015 has been selected based on the results from the Interhouse Swim Carnival. Training commences Tuesday 17 February at 6.00am sharp at Yeronga Pool. The training sessions are on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning with the Loreto Swim coach, Kristin Hatch. All squad members have received a booklet detailing the training program and competition commitments. The first Swim meet at All Hallows School will be held this Friday 20 February at from 4.00pm to 7.30pm. Transport by Bus is available from the school. All competitors need to meet Mrs Stevens in the MWC directly after Home room. Students will need afternoon tea as the meet doesn’t start until 6.15am.

Parents will need to collect their daughter at the end of the meet. Please see the booklet for details.

Interhouse Swim Carnival The girls at Loreto College should be proud of the outstanding House spirit and participation they demonstrated at the school swimming carnival on Friday. The superb House Captains and Representatives were impressive with their unwavering enthusiasm, leadership and participation. Thank you to the students who worked tirelessly on the pool deck to assist staff in running the event. A special thank you to the staff for their contributions and support on the day.

Loreto Touch Football Welcome to the 2015 season!

This year in Trimester 1, Years 7 and 8 play in the CaSSSA competition on a Wednesday afternoon, with Year 9-12 playing in Trimester 3.

All teams will train on a Monday morning before school at Annerley Junior Football Club fields, corner Victoria Terrace and Baron Street, Greenslopes. Please note that players are to arrive at training before 6.30am (own transport) and a bus will transport them to the College to arrive at 8.00am. Training is always on. If it is raining at the fields, all parents will receive a text by 6.00 am asking you to take your daughter to the College so they can train undercover.

On Wednesday, players are to meet in the MWC prior to boarding a bus to travel to Shaw Sportz, Shaw Road, and Wooloowin. Games are played 4.00 -5.00pm and players are transported back to the College by approximately 5.30pm traffic is a factor in arrival time. Transport home from the College is the responsibility of each player. All players wear a playing singlet loaned for the season, College sports shorts or bike shorts, touch football shoes or sports shoes with grip for playing on grass surfaces, and the College sports cap.

All players have been given a permission letter and signed consent should now be returned. Consent indicates that the player is agreeing to attend every Monday training session and every Wednesday game.

P&F School Dance Friday 13 March - Years 9 - 12 The first 2015 Loreto school dance is upon us! The dance will be held on Friday 13 March at 7.00pm. The theme for the evening is “Around the World”. The dance will feature a professional DJ, prizes and themed costumes. It is a lot of fun for both students and parents, and one we all aim to make enjoyable and safe. With that in mind, we require parents to register their preference and availability for the following jobs: Ticket sales:

Six parents needed for student entry and one to assist with the counting and clearance. 6.30pm - 7.30pm.

Security:

Twelve parents needed for each shift. Crowd control while waiting for tickets and supervising the outside of the hall. The doors of the hall are open for ventilation. Parents are required to stop attendees leaving and others entering. There are two shifts: 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm. (Professional security guards will be employed for inside the hall).

Cloak room:

Six parents needed for each shift. Receiving bags for safe keeping during the dance and then distribution at end. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm.

Canteen:

Three parents needed for each shift. Drinks sales. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm.

International Women’s Day Fun Run - Sunday 8 March Once again Loreto College will be participating in the RACQ International Women’s Day Fun Run. We encourage as many staff, friends of staff, students and families to participate to make this a wonderful event.

This event is being held at South Bank on Sunday 8 March from 7.00am, with Mater chicks in pink the major beneficiary of the event, a program supporting women with breast cancer. This fun run/walk is a wonderful opportunity to bring our school community together, particularly in your last year!

While this event has a fundraising component to support research into breast cancer, it is voluntary and participation is the aim of the team entry by the College, as there are many formal fundraising opportunities in our College calendar. Should you wish to fund raise then that is your responsibility.

Fascinate Media Release Mount Gravatt PCYC in association with the Garden City Library and Year 11 students from Macgregor State High School present the “Fascinate” Young writers competition Awards ceremony for the 10th year running.

“Fascinate” Young Writers Festival is a FREE opportunity for all young people aged 8-18 to use their creativity to produce a piece of original writing in the categories: poetry or short story. The Award ceremony celebrates the young peoples’ work, various entries are read during the ceremony and all young people receive a certificate of participation and a printed copy of the booklet produced.

All entries are due on 13 July and registrations and entries need to be uploaded via the following web link. http://pcyc.org.au/Clubs/Mt-Gravatt/News-Events.aspx. Conditions of entry and information regarding the Festival are also available on the website and it is important that young people read these PRIOR to entering.

Young people who enter the competition compete in three age groups 1) Junior 8 -11 years of age; 2) Upper primary/Lower Secondary 12 – 14 years of age and 3) Seniors 15-18.

Prizes will be awarded to the best story in each category and will be announced. These will be presented at an Awards ceremony which is being held at the Garden City Library on 20 August at 6.00pm.
