Volume 14 - 14 May, 2013 MISSION DAY “To love the poor, persevere in the same, live, die and rise with them was all the aim of Mary Ward.” Mary Ward’s epitaph.

I wholeheartedly wish to commend the efforts and energies of our student leaders and staff in making this year’s Mission Day such a success. As a community the students and staff worked together, in a spirit of felicity, freedom and hope, to raise awareness about and funds for par cular Mary Ward Interna onal (MWI) and Catholic Mission projects. In total, we raised $9,213.45 which will go towards the MWI Baby Milk Program in Zambia and the Catholic Mission project in Chennai, India. This wonderful project is run by Sister Clara and her fellow Salesian Sisters who rescue young girls and provide them with a safe home at their Marialaya Children’s Home. Thank you, girls, for your wonderful and generous support.

TEACHING & LEARNING AT LORETO It is pleasing to report the con nuing growth and evolu on of the “Habits of Mind” at Loreto. The “Habits of Mind”, as defined by Professor Art S Costa, are the disposi ons skilfully and mindfully displayed by characteris cally intelligent people when confronted with problems, the solu ons to which are not immediately apparent. The “Habits of Mind” are not thinking tools; rather they are disposi ons that incline one to adopt thinking tools and strategies.

Art Costa defines 16 par cular “Habits of Mind” and encourages all educators to foster these habits in both themselves and their students. The 16 Habits are an essen al part of Loreto’s Teaching & Learning Framework.

In the coming months we will present a series of reflec ons on the Habits and how we are embracing them at Loreto.

Student were allocated a letter of the alphabet and were given the task to create an imaginary creature based on an animal with a name starting with that letter. JUNIOR DRAMA CLUB On Friday night at 7pm the Junior Drama Club will be presenting plays they have been rehearsing over the past few weeks. It should be a very enjoyable night with a number of humorous and highly entertaining scripts. Students from Year 12 Drama Council have taken on the responsibility of a particular group and I am sure they will be proud of their efforts on Friday night. We expect all students to be in the Mary Ward Centre dressed with makeup by 6.30 for a 7pm start.

THEATRE VISIT On Thursday this week, at 10am, students from Years 10, 11 and 12 will be attending Animal Farm, a Shake & Stir production at The Playhouse. This play is adapted from the classic novel by George Orwell and the Director, Michael Futcher, should be very proud of the wonderful and moving performance that he has crafted.

ZxÉzÜtÑ{ç ZtÄÉÜx The last few weeks have been an incredibly busy time for the Geography Department with field trips being undertaken across all year levels except Year 9. At the end of April, the Year 10’s travelled to Boonah to investigate the rural sustainability of the town and its surrounds, and a week later, the Year 8’s travelled to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve at Maleny on the Sunshine Coast to investigate the conservation practices undertaken there. Last week, the Year 12 Geography class investigated various urban renewal sites in inner Brisbane for their unit on planning places and the Year 11 Geography class travelled to the Gold Coast to look at current and proposed beach management strategies for the Palm Beach area. For each trip, we were blessed with good weather and excellent guest speakers which all contributed greatly to the success of each day. We were also very lucky to have the supervisory assistance of many parents on both the Year 8 and Year 10 field trips. I would like to say a big thank you to the following Year 10 parents: Fay Towner (Lucy – 10BL), Anna Stafford (Rachael – 10WH) and Vicki Postle (Brooke – 10RD) and to the Year 8 parents: Kay Gleeson (Anna – 8BL), Kim Cochran (Rhiannon – 8GL), Tina Sukker (Stephanie – 8GL), Dr Selina Steiner- Sara (8 RE), Ester Dabinett (Sophia- 8RE) and Melissa Lorimer (Patrice – 8WH). In addition, I would also thank each class teacher for their work with the students in the lead up to and on the day of these trips as well as teachers Kath McCormack and Margaret Neale for their assistance. Finally, a big thank you to our teacher aide, Meg Runge, and pre-service teachers, Ruth Cohen and Alex Meechan, for their assistance on these field trips too. All of these wonderful people helped with the success of each field trip and their presence was greatly appreciated. I think each student is now very well equipped to write their reports from their findings on each day.

A reminder that Parent Lounge provides you as parents and guardians the opportunity to view information about your daughter and events that are occurring at the school. Parent Lounge is a secure, password protected site. The Parent / Teacher interviews will also use this portal to book meeting times for the interviews that occur early in Semester Two. You are also able to add your contact details to the Parent Directory if you choose to do so. On the Parent Lounge home page there is a menu option called ‘Parent Directory’ and you have the option here of adding some contact information that other parents will be able to view.

To access Parent Lounge go to the new College website www.loreto.qld.edu.au and click on ‘My Loreto’ at the top right of the page. Then click on ‘Parents’ to go to the link for Parent Lounge.

Once you are at the Parent Lounge login screen you enter your user name (parent number on fee account) and your password. Once you log in for the first time you can change your password to something easier for you to remember by clicking on the ‘Change Password’ icon at the top of the Parent Lounge home page. You are able to return to the home page at any time by clicking on the TASS icon at the top left of the screen.

We hope that you use Parent Lounge regularly to stay in touch with your daughter’s and the College’s activities.

If you forget your password it is a very easy process to change it.

Once you get to the Parent Lounge login screen the image below will appear. Click on ‘Forgotten Password’ and then follow the instructions to change your password.

`|áá|ÉÇ Wtç Earlier in this newsletter Mrs Hamilton referred to the projects supported by the funds raised on last Friday’s annual Mission Day. As can be seen from the details below, the money raised will be significant in promoting justice in two parts of the world vastly different to our experience.

In India, child trafficking and child labour is the reality for 12 million children. Every day countless young children are stolen from, or sold by, their families into domestic work and prostitution against their will. Many are also forced to become street beggars just to survive. With the support of Catholic Mission, local missionary, Sister Clara and her fellow Salesian sisters work tirelessly throughout Chennai, India, to rescue young girls from this tragic reality and to provide them with a safe home at their Marialaya Children’s Home.

The sisters also offer counselling, medical care, education and spiritual formation to the girls, helping them see their worth as beloved children of God. Mission Day at Loreto raised significant funds to donate to Catholic Church Mission to help Sister Clara share the love of God through her work of rescuing innocent girls from horrific situations—helping give them a future with hope.

Mary Ward International Australia has sponsored the Baby Milk Programme in Lukulu, Zambia, since 2008. This project provides much-needed basic nutrition for orphans and for vulnerable infants whose mothers are living with HIV/AIDS, giving children the best start at life, and providing relief for mothers and guardians. In 2012, 178 babies benefitted from MWIA support.

The Loreto Sisters working in Lukulu provide assistance to the Lukulu district through the local hospital and four rural health centres. Families attend nutrition education classes which are held by local nurses, further assisting mothers and guardians to provide their children with a healthy start to life. Sr Pat Hanvey who coordinates this project in Zambia said, “Experience has shown that many of these babies would die if they did not receive the milk supplement”.

Upcoming events

This Thursday 23rd May, St Elizabeth’s at Tarragindi are holding an Under 8s celebration with the theme “Celebrating Community, Sharing Music, Movement and Culture, Think Locally”. We will be sending the Clarinet Ensemble to support this local school by performing at their 9:00 am opening assembly. We will transport students directly from and back to the school by taxi and they would miss periods 1 and 2 of classes that day. The students will be accompanied by their conductor, Ms Melissa Cox.

Naplan Good luck to all year nine students with their Naplan testing this week. Please remember that you should still attend morning rehearsals for your ensembles this week.

Loreto Music Festival – Intermediate Instrumental Solo Heats Please be aware that there will now only be two sessions for this section, held on Wednesday 15 May at 7:30 am and Thursday 16 May at lunchtime. It is expected that, unless specifically organised beforehand, all students in the section should attend the first Wednesday morning session so that the majority of auditions can be completed at this time. Thursday lunch will be used for any remaining students and the few who could not attend due to sports training or ensemble rehearsals. See below.

It is with great pride that we congratulate Samantha Bull (Year 12) who has been chosen to go through to the State Finals. Well done, Sam! FUNMUM Lauren Causer (Year 10) has reported that her time at Fun Mum was an enjoyable and educative experience. Well done, Lauren!

c 9 Y axãá Interested in hearing about what took place at last week’s P & F Meeting?

After a discussion about our 2013 projects, decisions were made to allocate some of the funds raised by the P & F quarterly levy on: an ‘evacuation chair’ for students with limited mobility, a dishwasher for the Mary Ward Centre, an upgrade of the air-conditioning in the drama room, and a defibrillator.

The popular P & F Dance attracted over 750 students in March and made a nice profit, which will go toward P & F related projects, like those listed above. The P & F would like to publicly recognise the contribution of Kerrie Bull whose tireless work in organising Loreto dances over the last five years has made them such a success.

In presenting her Principal’s Report, Cheryl Hamilton announced that the Master Plan would be launched at the Gala Ball (see below) and spoke about a broad range of topics including the growth in sport in recent years and the upcoming five-yearly review of the school.

A tentative date was set (since confirmed for 28 May) for the next meeting of the Sport Support Group with discussions likely to include raising funds to install solar heating for the swimming pool.

Two-thirds of the tickets have been sold and preparations are underway for the raffle and silent auctions. Year level parent representatives are co-ordinating the seating arrangements. fv|xÇvx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá A reminder - on Monday 20 May all Year 11 Biology students will be going to North Stradbroke Island for a Field Trip which forms an important part of their course and data collected contributes to a summative assessment item. The students will be studying Sand Dune Ecosystems, the Biology of Brown Lake as well as the Mangroves at Myora Springs. To maximise the time spent on the island we will need to have an earlier than normal start and later finish to the day. Students need to be at school at 6.50am as we will be leaving at 7.00am sharp to catch the 8am barge. The anticipated return time to Loreto is 5.30pm.

Senior Biology students will have an opportunity to attend an optional excursion to the University of Queensland’s Integrated Pathology Learning Centre (IPLC) on Wednesday 19 June. The excursion is designed to give students an understanding of the ethical issues associated with the use of human tissue specimens in science and education, the effects of behavioural and environmental factors on health and the role of research in understanding disease. Mrs Marie Shaw and Ms Rachel Ryan, Biology Teachers, will be accompanying the excursion group. The group will travel to UQ Herston via bus at the start of the school day and return to Loreto by lunch. Students will need to be at school at 6.30pm to travel by bus to the function, but they will return to school at 10.30pm. The final night is a special occasion and requires a standard of dress beyond the casual clothing most students have been wearing to the lessons. It is expected that the students are dressed appropriately and adhere to the dress standards. The Marist teacher responsible for this event, Mrs Stevens, will speak with the girls at tonight’s lesson about the dress standard. Any other queries can be discussed with Ms Davidson.

This year we are very fortunate to have some experienced and qualified coaches. This week three teams play at home, with the Open C team having a BYE first up. The Open A team play Lourdes Hill College; The Junior A and Junior C team play against Mt St Michael’s. All home games are played at Annerley Soccer Club (The Open A team play on the senior field), 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley. The home games will finish at 5:00pm and students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are reminded to bring their uniform, shin pads, mouth guards and water bottles.

Cross Country UQ Cross Country Meet There is a Meet being held this Friday 17 May at University of Queensland at 4.00pm. A bus will transport the girls to St Lucia after school. The girls will need to be collected directly after the event. The event will finish around 5.30pm.

CSGSSA Cross Country Meet Will be held on Friday 31 May at Limestone Park Ipswich. Girls selected will be notified soon and a permission letter will be sent home to be returned before the meet. Parent Sport Support Group Meeting The next Parent Sport Support Group meeting will be held on Tuesday May 28 at 7.30 pm in Room 605 which is located on the ground floor in the Barry Gonzaga Building. The meeting wishes to discuss fundraising to Solar Heat the Pool. This would extend the use of the pool considerably, thus providing an additional teaching and training space. “Brissie to the Bay” Bike Ride - Fundraising for MS Australia On Sunday 23 June I will be riding 50km in the 2013 “Brissie to the Bay” bike ride to support people living with Multiple Sclerosis. I am lucky enough to be able to take part in this ride, however many people with MS cannot even walk, let alone enjoy riding a bike.
