Griffith University Updates School Holiday Campus Visits: Students (and their parents) can drop into the Gold Coast or Nathan campus for a personalised campus tour anytime between 10am and 1pm on either the 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 or 29 th September during the school holidays. Human Resource Management now offered at Logan: Griffith Business School is excited to announce the Human Resource Management major can now be studied as part of the Bachelor of Business at our Logan campus and will be offered from first semester 2012, along with the current major, Management. Logan’s unique three-semester a year approach means students can complete the standard three year degree in just two years full-time. The Human Resources Management major replaces the Marketing major, which will no longer be offered at Logan. Students can study Marketing at either the Gold Coast or Nathan campuses. Audition opportunity for interested Drama students Markwell Presents Cinematic Theatre Company is holding auditions on Saturday 15th October, 2011 for the YAIR Project 2012. “The Young Artists in Residence Project is an opportunity for young theatre makers to work and play in a marque venue with a professional theatre company. YAIR is open to 15 to 18 year olds who would like to take part in a 14 week project where they co-devise a new play with professional artists and then rehearse in preparation to perform and produce a one hour cinematic theatre show for a short season at the Judith Wright centre. Flood Relief Hampers A huge thank you to all Loreto families for their generous contributions to the Flood Relief Hampers. We received hundreds of items and were able to make twenty hampers that have been distributed to needy families in the Yeronga and Fairfield areas, who are still struggling after the effects of the floods in January. Flying Start Program Cameron Dick, the Minister for Education and Industrial Relations and the State Member for Greenslopes, is hosting a second forum on changes to the education system in Queensland including changes to education during the early years. This includes the Government’s exciting universal access to kindergarten program and the childcare reforms as a result of the National Quality Framework developed in conjunction with the Commonwealth Government.

This forum is for local parents, teachers and school staff to explain the next stage of exciting reforms to education in Queensland. Grease The next phase of the audition process for our combined Loreto/Villanova musical “Grease” is the lead call backs which will take place on Tuesday 4th October at Villanova’s Hanrahan Theatre from 4pm-7pm. The 11 students involved will receive audition packs in the next few days detailing what is expected of them. The dancing rehearsal that was scheduled for this same afternoon is now cancelled.

We wish the best of luck to the girls who will be auditioning in the second round. A complete cast list including leads, chorus, dancing chorus, musicians and tech crew will be made available mid-way through next term.

Music News Jazz Ensemble and Sorelle We have been invited to perform at the School Fete for St Ita’s Catholic School (249 Gladstone Rd Dutton Park) on Sunday 16 October from 12 to 12:30 pm. Broadway - With Rachel Beck and Ian Stenlake The end-of-year performance for our Senior Choir and Symphony Orchestra will be a two night event at Villanova College’s Broadway show (Thursday 20 and Friday 21 October). At the end of each year, Villanova College runs a big themed event that has featured professional guest soloists such as James Morrison, the Grigoryan Brothers and Idea of North. This year the event will have a Broadway theme and feature singers Rachel Beck (Australian productions of “Les Miserable”, “Singing in the Rain”, “The Sound of Music” and “Beauty and the Beast”, TVs “It Takes Two”) and Ian Stenlake (“Guys and Dolls”, “The Pajama Game”, “Sleeping Beauty”, Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, TVs “Stingers” and “Sea Patrol”). This will be a fantastic show with music from The Lion King, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chess, Miss Saigon and many other favourite Broadway shows. Spring Luncheon It was a perfect, sunny Spring morning when we welcomed the 160 guests at the River Room at South Bank to the annual Loreto Spring Luncheon organised by the Past Pupils’ Association. The city buildings shone in the sunlight and this mirrored joy and hope in the group. Our Association takes great pleasure and pride in welcoming all members of the Loreto family, from last year’s senior students to revered past students and staff from earlier days in Coorparoo’s school life. The delicious table buffet was very successful and quality wine was served with professionalism.Mrs Cheryl Hamilton spoke movingly of her student days at Coorparoo and we applauded her as the first ex-Loreto student to be principal of a Loreto school in Australia! She exhorted us to continue building our links with the Loreto members in Australia and internationally and invited the group to Federation in May, 2012, in Perth. Our multi draw raffle proceeds will assist with the Reading Recovery programme for literacy endeavours in the Kimberley area. Science News Positions are still available for The Science Experience being conducted by UQ, Griffith and QUT in late 2011/early 2012. It is open to students who are currently in Year 9 and 10. The program is designed to help students to make decisions about senior secondary and tertiary studies if they have an interest in the sciences. It is also a great opportunity to gain an insight into uni life and meet like-minded students from all over Australia. A number of our girls have already signed up for this program and they are very much looking forward to it.

The Robogals Parents and Daughters Science Challenge is a competition that encourages girls to come up with a science project with their parents and create a video to showcase their projects. The competition is a fun way to promote the involvement of girls in science, design and engineering. Girls between ages 5 to 18 can enter the competition, individually or as a team of 2, accompanied by a parent-mentor who is above 18 years of age. Results: Round 1 - 7 September OPEN A defeated St John Fisher 43 to 37 - Loreto started slowly after a long bus trip and it took most of the first quarter until they found good structure in attack and defense on the court. Murphy Allendorf led the way in offence while Jaime Briody, Chloe Creed and Isabella Mammone gave great support. Both Georgia Dennis and Grace Kearney played well in their first games, with both scoring several baskets. A well deserved victory with signs of promise for the forthcoming weeks. Well done!

OPEN B defeated Our Lady’s College 40 to 14 - This was a great start to the season with the all the team contributing to the win.

Accuracy in passing and shooting was a highlight. Loreto dominated both ends of the court and remained in control of the match each quarter. Our Lady’s College were unable to maintain any pressure on Loreto and the scoring flowed freely throughout the match. A strong win!

INTERMEDIATE A were defeated by St Rita’s 41 to 29 - St Rita’s got an early lead and Loreto were unable to pull back the margin.

There was plenty of enthusiasm and intensity displayed by all girls and while the result didn’t go our way, it was a strong start to the season.

Amber Schmidt and Katie Ware displayed excellent shooting skills and were given good support from all team members. Excellent spirit was a key to the team performance. Good effort, girls!

INTERMEDIATE B were defeated by San Sisto 18 to 12 - What an enthusiastic and energetic start to the season! Jemima Moore encapsulated this spirit and put a lot of pressure defensively on the opposition. Mia Page lifted the intensity in the second half after she ran down and intercepted a very difficult pass! A promising start to the season and all girls should be pleased with their efforts. Well done!

JUNIOR A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 42 to 13 - Loreto put in a fantastic effort for their first game of the season. For most of the girls this was their first game of basketball. Although a win was not the result, Loreto showed a great deal of potential. Julia Logan and Georgia Johnson had fantastic games in defense. All players worked hard in attack and offense and combinations were becoming smoother

OPEN A: Coach: Therese Begley A fantastic defensive display by all players kept the opposition to one touchdown. Touch Football captains Georgia Dennis and Maddie O’Connor led the way with both brilliant attack and accurate defence. More focussed rucking will be the goal for the next round.

OPEN B: Coach: Mitch Edwards It was totally disappointing to win by a forfeit in Round 1. However, the team took advantage of the time and had an extra training run by playing a scratch match.

INTERMEDIATE A: Coach: Adam Guest A good opening game with very effective defence displayed. Celia Lane had a particularly good game with a high work rate in addition to two touchdowns. A great start to the season by all team members!

INTERMEDIATE B: Coach: Ellen Luxton & Eliza Mooney The team had a great opening game completely dominating the opposition. They were consistent in defence denying any scoring opportunities. The majority of the team scored touchdowns. Brilliant games from Melissa Roberts, Anastasia O’Brien and Abigail Raison.

JUNIOR A: Coach: David Witt In their first game for Loreto, each member put in a great effort. The girls all played with great enthusiasm and worked well as a team.
