Volume 7 - 13 March, 2012 Dear Parents and Students In this Lenten season, I offer this reflec on, from Paul Cou nho SJ, on the grace of compassion that comes through freedom.

Let us pray for the grace of being compassionate. In a living rela onship with God, we are connected to and affected by what happens to anyone in life. With an infinitely big God, colour fades away, creed fades away. Good and bad fade away. We can see beyond colour, beyond religion, beyond a person being morally good or bad. As Jesus said, “I condemn the sin but never the sinner.” The sinner is also me. I praise virtue, but again that person who is virtuous is also me. This is when I know I am in a living rela onship with the Divine: when I can relate to another person’s interior being, and I care about the world as much as I care about myself.

When I put this case to my students at the university, one of them challenged, “So in compassion you do not have any freedom!” But as I told this student, freedom comes with response plus ability. The ability to respond is freedom. In charity, my ability to respond is limited to the people I choose to help, the me I choose to give, and the price I’m willing to pay. In compassion, the ability to respond is total.

Let us pray that we might be people of true freedom, able to respond fully with hearts of compassion, not only in mes of our own choosing, but more importantly in mes of God’s choosing. May we long for the freedom to respond with love and compassion.

MARY WARD CONNECT Last week, amidst the vibrant excitement of Grease, we welcomed to our community some very special visitors from Loreto Kirribilli and Loreto Ballarat. It was a delight and a pleasure to have them here sharing with us their own stories and experiences of being “Loreto girls”. As part of this Year 10 exchange, some of our own students, likewise travelled interstate to visit these two of our six sister schools. What an adventure for them all.

I wish to most sincerely thank the host families (in all three schools) for their great generosity, hospitality and openness in making these girls feel so very welcome. I am delighted that the girls so easily formed friendships and I look forward to these con nuing for them into the future.

GREASE Congratula ons to the cast, crew, musicians and everyone else involved in “Grease”. It was an outstanding success. The students have every reason to feel both proud and pleased with the wonderful result of their efforts. The show was slick, polished, professional and great entertainment. So many hard working, commi ed, generous and crea ve people contributed greatly to the show’s success. I thank the students for sharing with us their amazing talents.

On behalf of these students I also offer sincere thanks to the large numbers of staff, from both schools, who made this produc on possible. Each and every one of you contributed to making our combined Loreto/Villanova Musical such an outstanding success. Thanks also to Musical Director – Mrs Anna Nielson, Producer – Mr Gavin Swanson, the staff from both schools, parents, past students and industry professionals, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support and showcase the incredible talents of our students. The different aspects of behind-thescene preparation involved intense collaboration with so many parents, staff, community members, external community organisations and, of course, our students and we are incredibly grateful for everyone’s contribution.

Thank you to both school communities for purchasing every single ticket to the four shows in record time, which reassured us that we were guaranteed a full house. A particular special thank you to the Administration, Facilities and Performing Arts staff of Villanova College for allowing us to use your fantastic Hanrahan Theatre which contributed to the production having such an incredible impact on the audience. And finally a huge thank you to Loreto College’s principal Mrs Cheryl Hamilton and Villanova College’s Principal Mr Dennis Harvey and Acting Principal – Mr Greg O’Neill, for allowing us to produce “Grease” – The Musical and for providing such unwavering support every step of the journey.

We should all feel very proud of what we have achieved in six weeks. I am certain that “Grease” will be a lifelong memory for many of our students.

After our final performance on Saturday night, I finished by reading out aloud the first stanza of lyrics from the theme song “Grease” and I would like to close this final “Grease” update with those same lyrics as they convey in a nutshell the central theme of this iconic, coming-of-age musical about teenagers, school, rites of passage and love. The lyrics below also convey the message of the project as a whole.

Cancellation of Private Tuition All parents of student enrolled in Private Tuition please remember that the College’s policy on cancellation of tuition reads as follows: If a student wishes to discontinue lessons, she may do so only at the end of a term. The College requires that parents notify the music teacher AND the Director of Music in writing no later than two weeks prior to the end of the term if their daughter does not wish to continue her music studies for the following term. If a student discontinues lessons during a term, a full term’s fees will still be payable. This Friday 16 March is therefore the final day for notification of your intention to withdraw from Private Tuition for Term 2.

Combined Symphony Orchestra With the Musical finishing up this past weekend, it is almost time to begin rehearsals for the Loreto Villanova Symphony Orchestra. Rehearsals will begin on Monday 19 March at Villanova. Transport arrangements will remain the same as last year i.e. students in the orchestra should meet at the MWC stage instead of going to home room on Monday afternoons (rolls will be marked by Mr Langford). Mr Langford will use the Villanova Bus to transport most of the students to the rehearsal each week. We are in need of 2 parents to volunteer to drive the remaining 6-8 students to rehearsals. Loreto students who were told that they have been selected for an “Orchestra Audition” will be contacted this week to confirm their place in the ensemble.

Music Support Group Our next meeting is this Wednesday 14 March at 7:30pm. All music parents welcome to attend. Items on the agenda will include preparation for the Autumn Concerts as well as our first Fundraising and Social event to be held on Saturday 2 June.

Jazz Ensemble and Chorale Workshops With John Morrison & Jackie Cooper– All members of Jazz Ensemble and Chorale, we are going to run an extra rehearsal on Wednesday afternoon 9 May from 3:30 to 5:30pm (this is a week in between first and second trimester sports and so will not clash with those commitments). John Morrison will run the session for Jazz Ensemble. John is an amazing jazz drummer and spent many years touring worldwide as part of his brother James Morrison’s quartet. You can find recordings of his playing on the albums such as Snappy Doo & Live at the Sydney Opera House. In recent years, John has shared his time between working with school bands, running his own professional Big Band (Swing City Big Band) and running the Mount Gambier Generations in Jazz festival. Jackie Cooper is the vocalist with Swing City, as well as running her own 8 piece band “Itty Bitty Big Band”. She will work with the singers from Jazz Ensemble and the Chorale.

fv|xÇvx axãá The year in the Science Department is progressing well with new work programs in Year 8 Science and Senior Physics well underway. There is a lot of activity occurring in our labs at present. Our Year 8s have performed some exciting experiments over the last couple of weeks involving candles in jars, pendulums, parachutes and extracting salt from seawater. Year 12 Chemistry and Biology classes are currently in the middle of their Extended Experimental Investigations (EEIs) and some great work is being done investigating the chemical equilibrium of pool water and the gas exchange rate of plants. The Year 10 Science classes are covering human physiology, our Year 12 Physics students are learning about the amazing realm of atomic and nuclear physics while the Year 9s are completing lots of prac work with acids and bases. It seems every day is an adventure in the Science Department!

Well done to Chantel Morris and Jacqueline West who spoke so eloquently on assembly to share their experiences of The Science Experience (TSE) over the holidays. Four of our girls attended this annual science conference conducted by UQ, Griffith and QUT for students in Year 9 and 10. The program is designed to help students to make decisions about senior secondary and tertiary studies if they have an interest in the sciences. It is also a great opportunity to gain an insight into uni life and meet like-minded students from all over Australia. Anyone interested in attending the next TSE, please keep an eye on the Science noticeboard. It would be great to see a large group of Loreto girls attend, as it is a fantastic experience.

10 positions are available for any Year 12 Biology student who is interested in attending the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Lectures at RBH early in Term 2. This is a great opportunity to visit one of Australia’s largest and most successful medical research institutes. The QIMR's High School Lecture Series is designed to inform and educate students about the world of medical research. Scientists will discuss their research in lay terms and invite questions from students on areas such as cancer, infectious diseases, mental health and complex diseases. Any interested students can sign up on a sheet posted outside my office, or talk to Mrs Shaw.

The University of Queensland Junior Physics Olympiad (JPhO) is a 5-day hands-on immersive programme for Year 10 students being held on campus from Monday 25th to Friday 29th of June. It encourages students to expand their knowledge of physics, confront and solve problems and focus on practical learning. As many students in Year 10 have not yet formally studied physics, JPhO assumes only a strong general knowledge of science and mathematics in attendees. JPhO includes lectures, tutorials, tours and interactive workshops and students will gain an insight into the work of UQ lecturers and researchers in the school of mathematics and physics. The program provides an excellent introduction to senior physics and is a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded students from all over the state. Round 4 Results: Open A This week the Open A volleyball team won their fixture against Brigidine College 3-0. The girls were dominant throughout the match, with serving being their strongest asset. Welcome back to captain, Stephanie Esprester, who led the team well, being one of the stronger servers on the day.

Open C The Open C's fought out a tough victory against St John Fisher on Wednesday afternoon. After losing the second set the girls re-focused and easily took out the deciding set. I would like to congratulate the girls on an excellent team performance.

Junior A The Junior A girls had a tough game this week. The opponents from MMK came out strongly and produced some amazing hits!. Sarah Toohey did a great job playing Gabby Stein’s backcourt due to an injury. Meanwhile, Shannon O’Connor performed perfect blocking at the net. Awesome try at attempting to stay in the game last week girls. We will take it out this week. Train hard!

Junior B The Junior B’s had a challenging game this week against All Hallows’ managing to win the first and third sets to come out on top. Georgia Garrett was the stand out player this game with both Julia Logan and Isobella Scott also securing some amazing blocks on the net. Thanks to Kelsey Ahrens who secured our win with some very effective serving in the third set. This week will be working on their on-court presence and communication.

Junior D Unfortunately, this was not one of their best performances. However, once they got into the game their fighting spirit surfaced, a little. There were a few really well constructed points, with a number of 3 hits, leading to spike winners.

Georgia Christie and Grace O’Shea lead by example, lifting their game, motivating the team and winning some vital points to regain serve. The girls did fall short in a number of close sets, however good effort by all.

Junior E The girls played on an outdoor court, where the grass didn't remain grassy for too long, but soon turned into what can only be referred to as mud! Despite such conditions, this team played well and won the first two sets convincingly. The game was characterised by great serving from Ryleigh Bennett in the 1st and 3rd sets and Sidonie Smith in the 2nd. Great work, girls!

Junior F The Junior F team continues to grow from strength to strength, winning their match against Mt St Michael’s, 2 sets - 1. Walking into the volleyball hall at Mt St Michael’s the girls were once again hit with nerves, however bringing their amazing skills and confidence onto the court they ended up playing a brilliant game of volleyball. Special mention must go to Annetta Hile for her terrific passing in the game, Christina Stephanos for bringing the team together with her calling and brilliant game play and Sophie Freedman for again serving more than 10 points in a row! Good luck for the games to come girls!

CSGSSA SWIMMING CARNIVAL Our swim team produced a very good performance yesterday at the CSGSSA Swimming Carnival. The competition was strong at this level, yet the Loreto team did their best placing 5th in the Percentage trophy. I was able to witness some inspiring performances on the day. An outstanding effort from the team members who accomplished personal best performances at the Carnival. A special thank you to the Swim Captains, Hannah Kassulke and Elise Fort, for their work The Age Champion and support. Students should assemble on the lawn outside the Mary Ward Centre or Mulwith except where otherwise indicated.

There will be 5 or 10 minutes perusal for all exams during which time READING ONLY is permitted (no writing materials are to be used).

EXTRA TIME students assemble outside the ET room 407 by 8.30am and 12.30pm on March 23 & 26. Rolls will be marked in the exam room.

EXTRA TIME on March 27 - 29 will be in 511/513.

Normal school rules apply. You may leave the grounds only to go home. You are not required at school except for your tests. You must wear perfect school uniform, including your hat.

Paper is provided. You may take pens, rubber, pencils, ruler and calculator into tests. No paper and no pencil cases.
