MISSION DAY The excitement is building for the most highly an cipated event of the term: the Loreto Mission Day being held this Friday. The Houses and Year groups have all been working hard in prepara on for this day where the girls use their leadership skills and share their talents to produce a day filled with energy, fun and entertainment, all with the aim raising both awareness of and funds for others in need. As happens each year, Mission Day funds support the works of the Loreto Sisters via “Mary Ward Interna onal Australia” (MWIA). www.mwia@org.au

Administration Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Students with Disability (NCCD) From 2015, all schools across Australia are taking part in the implementation of a new national data collection on school students with disability. The data will provide information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the level of adjustments they receive.

The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. Better information about school students with disability will help teachers, principals and education authorities to put the right supports in place for students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability.

Information will be recorded in such a way that no child can be identified. Student names will not be collected.

Inclusion in the data collection is voluntary. If you wish your young person to be excluded from this, you can choose to opt -out of the data collection by informing the school in writing.

Curriculum and Year Level Reports Art News The first unit for Year Nine Art students for 2015 was to design a functional ceramic pot with form and surface inspired by organic forms. This task required students to explore the visual language of other artists working with a similar focus. Organic forms were initially explored through observational drawings. Student then needed to be flexible in their thinking as they investigated designs that would reflect the essence of the form rather than replicate the object. As well as working with raku clay to construct the forms, the students needed to consider the surface treatment which would best suit their form. Their creative and innovative thinking is evident the diversity of solutions to this task.

Drama Department News Theatre Production This week, playwright Victoria Carless will be sending us the first draft of our commissioned play script. Our initial meeting inspired the plot and she has incorporated many of our ideas. From Thursday 21 May, girls interested in being cast in the production will attend weekly lunchtime workshops. The cast will be finalised by the end of term. As it stands, there will be 12 – 14 roles with additional chorus members.

Junior Drama Club Junior Drama Club for 2015 is drawing to a close. Girls in Years 7 and 8 are currently preparing to perform to parents and friends. Year 7 will perform on Monday 18 May and Year 8 on Monday 25 May. The audience is invited to arrive at 5pm in room 411. Performances will run for approximately one hour.

Year 7 Happenings The Year 7s are preparing a “Photo Booth With A Difference” for Mission Day fundraising. Many girls have been giving up their lunch hour to prepare the resources needed for this activity. Thank you to those who have already donated dress ups or cash to help us run the booth. Girls will soon be able to sign up on a roster to help out on the day.

Skipping is happening each Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:50 – 8:15am. Everyone is welcome to join in. BYO rope or borrow one from Mrs Nielson. This is great exercise and a lot of fun. Come to the Magnolia Lawn outside Mulwith.

This will continue for the rest of Term 2.

Co-Curricular Events Music News Congratulations - To all the music students who have performed over the past few weeks during the 2015 Autumn Concert Series! All three concerts were of high musical quality and very enjoyable for performers and audience alike. Thank you to all the staff and conductors for all your work in helping the students prepare for these massive events; to Ms Lissa Gyte, Mrs Rosemary O’Neill and Dr Paul Svoboda for compering at the concerts; and to the students from the Music Council for their work running backstage.

Congratulations - To the members of Chorale and Big Band who last week toured to Mt Gambier for Generations in Jazz.

Both groups performed well in very high standard sections, and Big Band was even awarded 4th place out of 22 bands in their division – an exceptional result!

Rehearsals - Are back to normal this week, after several weeks of disruptions and changes due to concerts and tours. All rehearsals should this week run in their regular timeslots.

Music Support Group – Our next meeting of the Music Support Group is on this Wednesday night 13 May, where we will be finalising preparation for the Loreto Trivia Night, to be held on Saturday 23 May. The meeting will be held in the bottom level of our new Cruci building and all parents of music students are welcome to attend!

Enquiries - Regarding co-curricular music (including tuition and ensembles) for the rest of Term 2 should be addressed to either Mrs Karen Carr or Mrs Jane Bernays (3394 9915, music@loreto.qld.edu.au) while Mr Langford is taking some long service leave. We would like to welcome Mrs Bernays, who is a very experienced musician and classroom teacher, to the Music Department for the next six weeks as she takes on the role of Acting Director of Music. During this time, rehearsals for Improvised Jazz Ensemble (Thursday lunch), Concert Band One (Thursday afternoon) and Big Band (Friday afternoons) will run as normal under the direction of Mr Ivan Cocking, another exceptional musician and ensemble director.

We now have enough chocolates but some more $1 & $2 Scratchies, Movie / iTunes / Playstore gift cards or similar items would still be great. Larger donations are, of course, also always welcome!

Kokoda Challenge News Last weekend, Saturday 9 May, was the first of the big training hikes. Teams traversed 23km of tough tracks and forded several creeks. Unfortunately, a few of the creeks were still up and needed to be negotiated carefully to avoid getting wet feed. The hills along this training loop vary from very steep and slippery to the relentless incline which requires effort to get to the top. To successfully complete the loop requires not only a good level of fitness, it also requires everyone to consistently keep topping up the energy and hydrate regularly to avoid “hitting the wall”. Everyone completed the circuit with wet feet and ready to go home. Thank you to Glenys and Maurice for staying on-sight to support the teams by providing emergency drinking water and transferring participants from point to point.

Upcoming events include a night hike this Friday after school at Mt Coot-tha to replace the night hike which was washed out at the end of Term Two. Night hikes are fun but still have their challenges with lots of spiders and cane toads to dodge.

Following this is the second joint practice hike with Cavendish Rd SHS on Sunday 24 May. The practice hike will be about 28km. The circuit will combine part of the 17km and all 23km loops completed this term. We will start with the 23km Hell Hole Break loop and finish with the harder climb up and over Camp Mt. Teams will gain valuable experience from this in preparation for the challenge.

At last all four teams have achieved some fundraising. The Wombats are still holding onto third position on the ladder and Loreto Coorparoo Four are making a mad dash toward achieving their minimum fundraising to be allowed to compete. Well done! Loreto One and Loreto Lightning are still struggling and hopefully will meet their minimum fundraising target soon before it is too late. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated. Your support of our teams is greatly appreciated.

There are five weeks left for our teams to raise the minimum fundraising to be allowed to participate. Two of our teams are still in desperate need of support and a third would love a hand. Sports Department Netball Umpires Wanted The Netball competition begins next week on 20 May. I am looking for Netball umpires. Loreto has 16 teams registered for the competition and we need another 10 umpires. Umpires would need to be available on Wednesday afternoon from 4.00pm to 5.00pm at Downey Park. CaSSSA Sport The CaSSSA Trimester 2 sport is well underway with training programs starting in preparation for the competition beginning on Wednesday 21 May. There is a CaSSSA website to review all results and venue details for the upcoming competition.

The website is www.CaSSSA.sportingpulse.net Buses will transport the girls to and from the venue unless you are notified by the Convenor. If parents wish to collect their daughter at the venue students must submit a written note to the Convenor at the beginning of the day. Parents must be present at the venue at the conclusion of the game to collect their daughter, otherwise all students are to return on the bus.

All games start at 4.00pm and finish at 5.00pm. Girls will need to be collected at school around 5.30pm – 5.45pm depending upon the traffic conditions.

Big Spenders The P&F has approved the spending of more than $45,000 on a range of equipment, work and other activities to support the College and families. The last meeting approved donations to the schoolfor: 

an upgrade of the drama room



an electric ‘blanket’ to heat the swimming pool



screens and audio-visual projectors for the Mary Ward Centre, and



guest speakers at information nights.

The remaining spending was on: 

a banner promoting the P&F and its activities



a deposit for a mothers’ weekend venue booking, and



Sports Support Group polo shirts.

As of 15 April, the P&F had about $57,000 of funds which had been raised from the quarterly P&F levy along with other fund raising activities.

Among the other matters discussed at the meeting were the school dance, Father’s Day breakfast, entertainment books, use of social media, Music Support Group and the Parent Forum.

After the meeting representatives of architects Thomson Adsett consulted with parents about future stages of the College’s master plan. The next P&F meeting will be held on Tuesday 2 June, so mark your diaries well ahead.
