INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY FUN RUN I wish to thank and congratulate the 52 members of the Loreto “team” who took part in this important annual event in support of the cause and School Spirit. It was very pleasing to see that our numbers have grown from last year. I sincerely thank Ms Begley for her co‐ordina on and I hope to see more Loreto faces at next year’s event.

LORETO COUNCIL ORATION

Each year the Loreto College Council invites a special guest to deliver the Council Ora on on the Loreto theme of the year. This year’s invited speaker, Sr Chris ne Burke IBVM, last week delivered a though ul reflec on on the challenges and many dimensions of jus ce in our world today. She addressed staff, student leaders, members of Council and its commi ees, the execu ve members of the P&F and the execu ve of the Loreto Past Pupils’ Associa on. I wish to thank Sr Chris for her leadership and her involvement.

At the dinner which followed, the guests enjoyed the conviviality of a community united in their desire to pursue jus ce and truth in the name of Jesus and Mary Ward.

I thank the Year 9 leaders for their gracious hostessing. They were a credit to both themselves and the school.

CSGSSA SWIMMING CARNIVAL

I wish to commend the efforts of the Swimming Squad for their obvious hard work in prepara on for this year’s carnival. Many team members a ended both the summer swimming clinic and the swimming camp and achieved PB’s for the season. I congratulate the team members on their extra effort and for their spirited contribu on throughout the season.

MARY WARD CONNECT We welcome back our interstate travellers and congratulate them on being such excellent ambassadors for their school and their state. We also thank Ms Beach and Mrs van den Brink for their involvement, encouragement, support and generosity in supervising the travellers. Thank you to our host students and families also for your wonderful efforts. Our visitors had a really enjoyable me, despite the weather, so thank you very much. The students have developed their own focus in response to the concept The Human Condition- Extrinsic. Researching, developing and reflecting are an integral part of their art practice as they work towards resolved artworks. Their Visual Diary is a valued way of documenting their ideas. _|uÜtÜç axãá Somerset College Celebration of Literature - Thursday 14th March This is an exciting day for avid readers! Your daughter needs to be at school at 7.20am, the bus leaves at 7.30am.

Students should wear full school uniform, without the hat. They will need pen and paper for notetaking, lunch and water.

There will be a bookshop where girls can buy a book and have it signed by an author. The bus will return by 3pm.

_tÇzâtzx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá French On Friday we farewelled the 17 French exchange students from our sister school, St Joseph de Tivoli in Bordeaux. Thank you to the Loreto families whose generosity in hosting our international guests made the exchange possible. I would like to sincerely thank the Loreto staff who organised activities and attended excursions with the French exchange group: Mr Chris Jones, Mrs Yuri Hada-Baxter, Mr Ben Langford, Mrs Helen Radvan, Mrs Peita Ward, Ms Michelle Davidson, Mrs Margaret Duncan, Miss Gillian Hibbert and Mrs Marie Shaw. Thank you also to Ms Amy Stewart and Ms Jess Badke whose assistance in organising the French exchange program was invaluable. The exchange program would not have been possible without the help of Mrs Lesley Bongaarts, Mrs Alison McEneny, Mr Bill Bradic, Mr Mark Onions and Mr John Henderson whose organisation of the excursions and the farewell get together was greatly appreciated. The French exchange program provided our students with wonderful opportunities to develop their linguistic and cultural awareness and to make life-long friends on the other side of the world.

Japanese We have also been fortunate to have had two sets of Japanese visitors with us during the months of February and March.

On Friday we said goodbye to Natsumi, Kanako and Yukiko, our visitors from Kagoshima in Japan. Last Tuesday a group of 12 girls arrived from Kanagawa Gakuen in Yokohama, Japan for a short stay in Brisbane. Many thanks to Mrs Yuri HadaBaxter for her excellent organisation of the Japanese exchange programs and to Mrs Peita Ward and Mrs Angela Waite who attended the Welcome party for our Japanese guests last Thursday. During their time at Loreto the Kanagawa girls assisted with Japanese classes and perfected their English. Unfortunately we farewelled these 12 students on Monday but we look forward to seeing them again soon. Another group of Japanese exchange students from Kanagawa Gakuen will visit Loreto at the end of July this year.

V{âÜv{ tÇw à{x fàÉÄxÇ ZxÇxÜtà|ÉÇ In her address to members of our College community last week, Sister Christine Burke IBVM, stressed that a key concept within the Christian understanding of Justice, the national Loreto theme for 2013, is the establishment and promotion of right relationships.

We do not have to look far to see absences of right relationships and the cries for justice that accompany these circumstances. The recently created Royal Commission is seeking to restore right relationships that have been severed within the Church. On a global scale we see the absence of right relationships due to the widening disparity between the wealthy and the poor.

For all its weaknesses, the Church remains a major agent for restoring right relationships on the global scale.

Through agencies such as Caritas, Catholic Missions and the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Church is a major global influence in working for right relationships. As such it promotes the reign of God here and now.

At Loreto the girls are actively engaged in the Church’s Mission through their generous support for these Church agencies. On Monday eight students attended the Caritas “Just leadership Day” and considered matters of justice.

Every day during the Lent the girls give generously to Project Compassion. Without fanfare, which is as it should be, our students are a vigorous and powerful force in promoting the reign of God. Relationships are about people rather than ideas or circumstances. Two weeks ago a small group from the College were deeply moved to hear the personal stories of members of the stolen generation as they marked the anniversary of the Apology. We can know about things intellectually, but it is in relationships that the heart is moved.

Music Extension Recital Good luck to the Year 12 Music Extension girls who perform their first assessed Recital tonight! Staff, parents, students and friends are all welcome to come along to support the girls – it will be a high quality and musically varied concert featuring: Fiona McMahon (Violin), Gabby Flores (Guitar), Jaclyn Kuhl (Voice), Nicole Pinto (Piano), Shannon Becquigny (Voice), Madeleine Dinnen (Guitar) and Isabella Kirkman (Voice). The recital will be held on the Mary Ward Centre Stage in intimate mode, begins at 6.00pm and should finish about 7.00pm.

Lunchtime Music Recital This Friday will see students from the Private Tuition program perform the first Lunchtime Music Recital for 2013. All staff, parents and friends are invited to attend what is always an enjoyable concert. Simply come to the Mary Ward Centre Stage by 12:45 pm on Friday 15 March.

Loreto Music Festival Entries are now open for the Loreto Music Festival! Students from all year levels are invited to enter as a Vocal (separate Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Senior divisions), Instrumental Soloist (Beginner, Junior, Intermediate and Advanced divisions), Duet (Year 8, Year 9/10, Year 11/12 divisions) or Ensemble (Acoustic and Band sections). All entries attract points towards the coveted Loreto Music Festival Perpetual House Trophy as well as the chance to be selected to perform at the Finals Concert on Wednesday 19 June. Collect your entry forms from Wednesday this week from outside the Music Office or from your Music Tutor. Entries close this Friday 15 March so don’t miss out!!

Private Music Tuition At Loreto we endeavour to provide quality Music Tutors with expert knowledge on their instrument, and with an ability to relate to and engage with their students. For this to be possible, it is both necessary and just to guarantee these Tutors their hours of work for each term in advance. When parents enrol their daughters for music lessons they therefore commit to a full term of tuition. There is an opportunity at the end of each term to withdraw from lessons for the subsequent term, but once enrolled, students cannot cease lessons during a term. This is clearly stated on the Private Tuition form that parents sign when enrolling their daughters. Parents who plan to withdraw their daughters from tuition for Term 2 2013 should please be aware that this desire must be communicated in writing (by letter or email) to the Coordinator of Music by this Friday 15 March.

Symphony Orchestra We have had to make a change to the Autumn Concert performance date for Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra will now perform at the second of our two concerts on Friday 26 April instead of the first concert as originally advertised. This change has been made due to the fact that Villanova students do not return from holidays until Tuesday 16 April and the orchestra will not therefore have rehearsed since mid-March. If this change causes difficulties, please contact Mr Langford at the Music Office as soon as possible.

câuÄ|v fÑxt~|Çz On Saturday 2 March, Anthea Bach was our representative in the Lions Youth of the Year Zone B Final. Once again, Anthea’s talents, general knowledge and public speaking skills shone through. This meant that Anthea then went through to the Regional Final on Saturday March 9. At this level there were six contestants who all sat for a thirty minute interview, delivered two impromptu speeches and presented a prepared five minute speech. Anthea spoke confidently, passionately, sincerely – and won the Speaking Competition. Congratulations, Anthea! We are very proud of you and your achievements!

This conference is a unique opportunity for students to meet and listen to top academics speak on a wide range of challenging topics and is aimed at stimulating thought beyond the constraints of the curriculum.

The topics, “I think, therefore I am’, ‘Nanotechnology’, ‘The Self Image’, ‘Lateral Thinking’, and ‘The Big Debate – Free Will is an Illusion’ are delivered in a university style of learning, aimed to broaden students’ experience and develop connections between areas of study and the bigger picture.

This is an exciting opportunity for our girls who enjoy contemplating difficult but interesting intellectual concepts, that require thinking outside of the square.

Volleyball Results Open A – The Open A Volleyball team overcame a spirited fightback from Mt Alvernia to ultimately win 2 - 0. Some solid serving and good work at the net in the latter half of the second set enabled a good fightback from 7 points down to eventually win 25 - 23.

Open B - A strong performance from our Open B team defeating San Sisto 2 sets to nil. Girls are showing great commitment as we come to the final weeks. Erin Stafford was outstanding this week, opening the first set with 10 awesome serves. Well done to all girls on their great defence.

Junior A – The Junior A Volleyball had another extremely close 2-1 loss to Lourdes Hill this week. After winning the first set 26 - 24, and leading for much of the second (eventually losing 23-25), a lapse in concentration from the girls in the third allowed Lourdes Hill to run away with the deciding set 17-25. By far, this was the best the girls had played all season and the improvement was evident with Loreto playing proper 3-touch volleyball.

Junior B – A strong game by the Junior B this week, however they went down in a close contest to San Sisto College. Kasey Hiscock was a star player today, putting in all the skills learnt at training. Lauren Hocking had excellent passing today! It was a great game, hopefully next week we have a little more success!

Junior C - Another tough game for our Junior C team going down in a close match to Our Lady’s College, 2 sets to 1. Girls should be commended on their three hits and rotational work. Special mention to Emily Littleton and Sidonie Smith for their spiking and to Claire Lyons for her passing. Best of luck this week girls.

Junior D - Last Wednesday the Junior D Volleyball team had another outstanding victory against Stuartholme. The girls played very well to take the game in straight sets. The girls have been working hard at training to improve their skills and this has been highlighted in the games this season. Notable Performances: Georgia Fuller and Georgia Paroz Junior E – A great win, characterised by the girls gaining more confidence as the game progressed. They supported each other really well and were ready for unexpected 'shanked' passes. Sally Nielson served beautifully in the first set and later in the game chased down a ball, got it back into play and subsequently won the point! Caitlin Dixon's serving was fantastic as she was able to control where she wanted to serve the ball. Natalie Shay also served exceptionally well - including a run of 15 straight points in the second set, which took us all the way to 25 points!

Junior F – The Junior F team had a more challenging game this week against Brigidine College, suffering their first loss of the season. The final score aside, all players worked together well to set up close scores in each of the 3 sets. Special mention must go to Stella Griffin and Sophie Capell for great front court work in attack and defense.

Waterpolo Congratulations to the three teams this season who played in the QLD waterpolo competition. Well done to all three Loreto teams who won their games on the weekend. A very special thank you to the coaches Oly Chambers and James Duffy, the Team Managers Catherine Micheal, Bob Logan and Debbie Firrell.

The Under 15’s team has made it to the finals and will be playing a Semi-final against Brigidine at 1.15pm on Saturday 16 March at the Valley Pool. We wish them all the best for the game. There will be many supporters there to cheer you on.

A reminder there will be a Warriors Presentation Day at the Clem Jones Pool, Zahel St, Carina starting at 3.00pm and finishing at 6.00pm. All players are required to attend.

CSGSSA Swimming Carnival Our swim team put in a very good performance yesterday at the CSGSSA Swim Carnival. The competition was strong at this level, yet the Loreto team did their best placing 7th in the Percentage trophy. I was able to witness some inspiring performances on the day. An excellent effort to the team members who accomplished personal best performances.

A special thank you to the Swim Captains, Samantha Firrell and Madeline Fisher, for their work and support on the day.

Loreto College were awarded 7th in the Aggregate overall.

The Age Champion results were as follows:  13 years Aggregate – 7th  14 years Aggregate – 7th  15 years Aggregate – 9th  16 years Aggregate – 7th  17 years Aggregate – 5th  Open Events Aggregate - 4th A sincere thank you to Tennille Willington (Swim Coach) for her hard work with the team throughout the season. A special thank you the assistant coaches and Loreto past Swim Captains, Hannah Williams and Hannah Kassulke. Also thank you to the parents of the swimmers who have supported and transported the girls to the early morning training. Well done to the Year 8 and 12 students, Sport Council and staff who supported the competitors on the day of the competition.

Congratulations to all swimmers for their hard work and contribution to the team.

Cross Country Cross Country training is starting in preparation for the up-coming season. Cross Country training is as follows:   

Monday - 3.30pm to 4.45pm Tuesday - 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm Thursday - 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm

Composite District Cross Country Meet There will be a Composite District Cross Country next Monday 18 March at the Yeronga Memorial Park, Yeronga. Details of the event will be given to the competitors this week. A bus will transport the competitors to the venue and private transport will need to be arranged for collection. The first race will begin at 4.00pm.

Congratulations Well done to the following Loreto girls who have been selected for the U15 Touch Football for Composite District. 

Maddison Witt (Year 10) and Farren Buckley (Year 9).

They will be competing in the Metropolitan East Carnival on 19 March at Cleveland.

Outstanding effort to the following girls who were selected for the U18 Composite District Hockey team. 

Georgia Hillas (Year 12) and Wade Bilton (Year 11) were selected to play at the Metropolitan East Hockey trials at the State Hockey Centre on 20 March.



Tahlia Simms, Leah Carey and Meghan Williams-Dell were selected as Shadows for the competition.

Students should assemble on the lawn outside the Mary Ward Centre or Mulwith except where otherwise indicated.

There will be 5 or 10 minutes perusal for all exams during which time READING ONLY is permitted (no writing materials are to be used).

EXTRA TIME students assemble outside the ET room 511/513 by 8.30am and 12.30pm. Rolls will be marked in the exam room.

Normal school rules apply. You may leave the grounds only to go home. You are not required at school except for your tests. You must wear perfect school uniform, including your hat.

Paper is provided. You may take pens, rubber, pencils, ruler and calculator into tests. No paper and no pencil cases.

A medical certificate must be supplied if you are ill during exams.
