BUILDING UPDATE As you will be well aware, the new building is rapidly taking form and shape. Unfortunately, we experienced some early delays in the construction program, however, we are now making positive progress and look set to take occupancy before fourth term.

As part of the planning for our new building we have, trialled some new classroom furniture from Steelcase. Steelcase conducted an “Active Learning Post-Occupancy Evaluation” using an Education Solutions research tool to measure the effect of the furniture on student engagement in the classroom. 98 students and 3 teachers participated in the trial and evaluation of the learning space in Room 215. The overall conclusion from this research indicated that the new furniture solutions made a positive impact on student engagement factors.

From the student perspective, the new classroom furniture contributed to “a moderate to exceptional increase in student engagement, ability to achieve a higher grade, motivation to attend class and be creative.” Students said the new environment was more exciting, better for group work, collaboration, interacting with others, comfortable and ‘great’.

On the basis of this strong endorsement from the student and teacher users, this furniture will be installed in the new classrooms.

To the Loreto Cross Country team on successfully defending their First Place in the Percentage Trophy at the Catholic Girls’ Schools Interschool Competition held last week. Loreto placed fifth overall. Well done to the whole team for their hard work and commitment and thanks to our two wonderful coaches: Claire and Andrew.



BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL SCHOOL PARKING ENFORCEMENT The College has been advised by Brisbane City Council (BCC) that they will be maintaining a presence around the College with a view to enforcing parking restrictions within the school zones. They have advised that the primary aim is to ensure the safety of students and of others and that PARKING FINES MAY BE ISSUED IN CASES WHERE ILLEGAL PARKING PRACTICES ARE OBSERVED. The College supports the BCC in this initiative and takes this opportunity to remind all who park around the College that the safety of students and respect for the local residents are paramount. Economics is Everywhere - Year 12 Economics Trip to Canberra On Sunday 25 May, twelve enthusiastic Economics students- Marcie Bakker, Teagan Chaston, Renita Fernandes, Kate McGovern, Emma McMahon, Stephanie Moloney, Emily Nguyen, Kira Stevens, Jemma Stubbs, Madeleine Taylor and Jacqueline West plus our teachers Ms Hanson and Ms Diamond, travelled to Canberra as part of our unit “Contemporary Macroeconomic Management, with a special focus on Fiscal Policy- the Budget. The trip was a great learning experience.

On Sunday we saw some of the sights of Canberra including: Mount Ainslie, the Australian War Memorial, the National Art Gallery and a drive by tour of the foreign embassies. We also strolled through the autumn leaves in Glebe Park in our capital city’s centre. On Monday we had a big day commencing with a visit to Old Parliament House where we learnt about the inner workings of Australia’s voting system at the Australian Electoral Education Centre. After morning tea, we walked up to New Parliament House where we toured the Senate and House of Representatives and were involved in a Parliamentary Education Activity role play showing us how to pass a Bill in Parliament. Finally, the highlight of the trip for us was watching question time in the House of Representatives; it was feisty! We travelled home on Monday afternoon tired and fulfilled. We would like to thank the Australian Government for contributing with funding for this trip under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate programme and our teachers for enabling this wonderful opportunity to happen.

Year 9 ‘Designer Cushions’ The Year 9 Home Economics textiles unit on design included an understanding and appreciation of the elements and principles of design in the creation of aesthetically pleasing designs. The application of 12 specialty embellishment techniques was included in the sewing component of the unit. Components of the Design Brief for the practical performance task were: Think creatively to design a cushion from a chosen theme to complement a room of your choice. Strive for accuracy when trialling, refining and executing a range of sewing techniques and processes to create your design. Manage impulsivity and resources to construct an aesthetically appealing cushion designed from a chosen theme. Reflect on your progress and success. Examples of 9C Home Economics work are shown below.

Year 10 Subject Selection For the remainder of this term and the first few weeks of Term Three, the Year 10 students will participate in the Subject Selection process for Year 11, 2015.

A Subject Selection evening will be held for parents and students on Monday 4 August. This will be a valuable opportunity to talk with Subject Coordinators and teachers of Year 11 and 12 subjects to gain more information about the Senior Courses on offer.

Year 12 Geography - Going Places….

This term, as part of their unit “Planning Places”, the Year 12 Geography class has been conducting an investigation into one of the various projects being undertaken by the Brisbane City Council to revitalise Brisbane’s CBD - their Vibrant Laneways Project. This project is part of their vision for Brisbane’s future development. At the beginning of the unit, the students undertook a whole day’s field work in the Brisbane CBD. Part of this fieldwork involved meeting with and listening to the BCC’s Executive Officer for Urban Renewal Rebecca Arnaud (past pupil Loreto, 1998) and Head of Urban Design, Scott Chaseling (photo). Both presenters were very impressive and from this, the students were able to gain a more complete understanding of the need for planning for our city’s future, now. They were also armed with vital information to help them carry out the rest of their field work activities, which formed part of their current assessment, a Report. It was a most enjoyable and productive day, with students commenting that they now see the city centre with a very different set of eyes. We would like to thank Mrs Valentine for accompanying us on the day; she not only helped with the photography but was also able to share her valuable insights with the students. And we would also like to thank TV celebrity Tom Williams, for greeting us at the top of the Mall at the beginning of our trip!

Music Department Year 10 Recording Studio Next week, the Year 10 Music Classes will go to the Ghostgum Recording Studio to professionally record their group compositions and performance assessment. Mrs Nielson’s class will be going on Tuesday 17 June and Mr Langford’s class will go on Thursday 19 June. All students in these classes should last week have received a letter asking parents for help with transport to and from the venue (Cannon Hill Anglican College). If any parents who can assist can please return this letter as soon as possible, we will be able to finalise transport arrangements.

Date Claimer Earlier this year we unfortunately had to cancel a planned Year 9 excursion to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Schools Concert. The good news is we have instead been able to organise tickets to a different QSO concert called “Mr Smith’s Composition”. We will go to this concert in the first week of Term 3 (Thursday 24 July and take both the Year 9 and 10 Classes. “Mr Smith’s Composition” is a narrated journey that will take the students through composing a masterpiece, and learning how the instruments of the orchestra transform the notes on the page into the music we hear.

Co-Curricular Music Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Big Band These three Loreto groups will be performing at the St Catherine’s School Fete on Sunday 22 June. Students should arrive in time to meet at the St Catherine’s Church car park (Newnham Road Wishart) by 12pm. We will be playing from 12:30pm to 1:30pm (Big Band first, then Exit Stage Left and finishing with Sorelle). For this event, students will wear black pants and black shirts with a Loreto Crest (this will be our new performance uniform for these groups – a letter regarding purchasing the shirt has been distributed to students at the end of last week).

Senior Choir Contrary to the Exam Block Rehearsal Schedule that was published last week, Senior Choir will NOT be rehearsing on Tuesday 17 June.

Rehearsals During Exams Please carefully note the attached schedule for the remainder of this term. Many rehearsals have been cancelled to allow students appropriate time to prepare for and complete their assessment. When rehearsals ARE on, it is expected that all members of the ensemble do attend.

Year 10 Marist Dancing Last Tuesday was the final night of Marist Dancing. The students gathered for the formal occasion at Riverside Receptions at New Farm for an extended evening of dancing with the Year 10 students of Marist College Ashgrove. The girls were presented beautifully; they conducted themselves with maturity and had a wonderful time in each other’s company. Chelsea Kuhl was the lucky recipient of a prize for the most enthusiastic participant from Loreto. Dancing has been a long tradition for Year 10 students at Loreto. Given the fantastic response of students to this event, it seems highly likely that it will continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

SRC ‘Walkathon End Human Trafficking’ - Monday 23 June A reminder that Monday 23 June is Loreto’s Walkathon. This event is in support of Project Futures: End Human Trafficking which works to create an empowered world where every person can take action against human trafficking and exploitation. In the year of sincerity, we are inviting every student to participate dressed as an inspirational women from any time under the theme “Sincerity Sisters.” There will be a best dressed award available for one girl from each house. The walk will take place over two hours and will finish with a lap of the oval. On this lap, girls will be required to carry two 2litre bottles of water, to symbolise the mental and physical toll that slavery places on its victims. The aim of the afternoon will be to raise awareness and funding for programs dedicated to combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation globally. A page has been set up and we would like to encourage you to support this cause. Even the smallest donation would be appreciated. We are well on our way to our goal of raising $5000 and we’d like to thank everyone who has already made a donation .

Sport News Athletics Training for Athletics will begin on 2 June 2014.

There will be a training session at QE11 directly after school for all disciplines on Tuesday 24 June. A bus will take the girls to the QE11 stadium and return to Loreto College at 5.30pm. 

Middle Distance training times are as follows at Loreto:

Thursday 19 and 26 June from 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm.

Monday 23 June from 3.30pm to 4.45pm. 

CaSSSA Netball The CaSSSA Netball competition has two more rounds before the end of term. There will be training next week for all Junior teams starting Tuesday 17 June 2014.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: All girls MUST have a note in early Wednesday morning (by 8.30am) if they are being picked up at the venue. Otherwise girls will return by bus to Loreto College. There will be NO netball training Tuesday 10 June, Wednesday 11 June and Thursday morning 12 June 2014. There WILL BE training on Thursday afternoon for Year 8A and 8B teams. Movement of the Heart - A Prayer Service for World Refugee Day On Friday 20 June the Archdiocese of Brisbane is hosting an event at the Cathedral of St Stephen to pray for a movement of the heart with regards to the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. The evening will commence at 6.30pm and will include prayers, music (including performances from Scattered People, Brisbane’s own Refugee Choir) and insight into the lives of asylum seekers and refugees. The event will be followed by a light supper.

P & F News Step forward budding ‘Masterchefs’ Would you like to unleash your inner ‘masterchef’ and make a difference to the school? The P&F is calling on all families to submit one recipe each for the Loreto cookbook, which is one of our key fund raising initiatives in 2014. Send us your most loved recipes, be it your signature dish or whatever it is that you ‘plate up’ to great acclaim from family and friends. We have more desserts than we need but are suffering from a lack of hearty breakfasts, wholesome lunches and dinners-that-impress.

The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register is hosted by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children and is supported by Vision Australia and Guide Dogs. It is the first national register of children in Australia with vision impairment. The Register has been collecting data since 2009, and this data is providing important information about the types of eye disease and vision disorders children have and the support they need. The data is also used by service providers and researchers. Data is stored securely and no child can be identified in any way when the data is released.

Families are invited to register their child (aged 0-18 years) if they have vision impairment in both eyes which has been diagnosed by an eye specialist or ophthalmologist. Registration can be completed by contacting Register staff on (02) 9872 0303, or by visiting the VI Family Network website at: www.vifamilynetwork.org.au. The website also provides information on eyes and vision; family support; education and related issues; braille and low vision aids; technology supporting vision impairment; newsletters from Australian low vision agencies and support groups, useful websites; and news and events that might interest families across Australia. Loreto College Coorparoo Parents & Friends’ Association is proud to announce that we are producing a beautiful cookbook in 2014. Proceeds from this book will be directed to our capital works priority needs.

The more we raise the more we can accomplish!

To kick this off, we are asking for your most loved recipes, your signature dish or that impressive recipe that never fails and everyone asks for. We need recipes from as many of our Loreto families, past pupils, staff and friends as possible!

This will make our book all the more special to you and the community, ensuing it is a treasured keepsake for years to come.
