Me interesaba continuar investigando historias contadas bajo la mirada femenina en el continente latino americano.

Con certeza sigo pensando que hay muy buenos trabajos realizados por fotĂłgrafas y me enorgullece compartirlos en Foto FĂŠminas, esperando que una mayor audiencia los pueda ver y compartir.

foto féminas Foto Féminas es una plataforma creada con la finalidad de promover a través de medios digitales y visuales a fotógrafas latinoamericanas y del Caribe o que residan en el continente.

Como objetivos, buscamos propiciar un intercambio fotográfico que motive a un futuro mejor a la mujer en la fotografía. Asimismo, la difusión de trabajos fotográficos, la inclusión de artistas emergentes, la ratificación de artistas consagradas, son los puntos que nos interesa seguir desarrollando con más profundidad en Foto Feminas y es por ello, que continuaremos reivindicando a la mujer en su destreza, y fomentando la educación y cultura fotográfica.

En este primer Tomo, buscamos llevar a nuestra audiencia a la reflexión y re-interpretación de una América Latina actual y contemporánea, vista desde una perspectiva femenina. La cual presentamos en este libro a través de historias personales, conceptuales, documentales y periodísticas; cubriendo las prácticas del (auto)-retrato, paisajismo y naturaleza muerta.

Todas estas historias visuales son contadas por las doce fotógrafas presentadas en Foto Féminas durante el 2015, emergentes y consagradas, de ocho países diferentes en América Latina. A través de todas las historias, cruzamos nuestro continente, y con ello, aprendemos las realidades actuales de nuestros países vecinos.

Veronica Sanchis Fundadora y Curadora de Foto Feminas

Verónica Sanchis Bencomo Fundadora & curadora. Es una fotógrafa venezolana que actualmente vive en Hong Kong. En el 2010, Verónica se graduó de la Universidad de Swansea Metropolitan, Gales, con un BA (Hons) en Fotoperiodismo. Poco tiempo después de su graduación, ella fue nominada por el periódico The Guardian al premio “Estudiante de fotografía del año” y por Amgueddfa Cymru, (museo nacional de Gales) al nombramiento “retrato fotográfico 2010”.

Lorena Endara A Man a Plan a Canal Panama Esta serie fue producida durante un periodo de ocho años (2006-13), mientras que investigaba y recopilaba los procesos económicos, políticos e históricos que continuamente dieron forma a mi país nativo, Panamá. Aquí las fuerzas externas del desarrollo y progreso chocan con fuerzas internas de la herencia y la identidad. He intentado evitar que el Canal de Panamá se represente como un símbolo de riqueza económica, tal y como se conoce dentro la vernácula nacional. En lugar de eso, enfoco en paisajes que mantienen historias complejas sobre el mito del progreso, con todas sus promesas y fracasos.

This series was produced during an eight year period (2006-13), during which I researched and recorded the historical, political, and economic processes that continually shape my native country, Panama. Here, the external forces of development and progress collide with the internal forces of inheritance and identity.

I purposely avoid representing the Panama Canal as it stands in the national vernacular as a symbol of economic wealth. Instead, I focus on landscapes that hold complex stories around the myth of progress, with all its promises and failures.

Karla Gachet Kerly’s Fifteen Kerly Aguayo vive en la Hacienda La Mariana, (provincia de Los Rios, Ecuador) junto a sus padres, hermanos, tios, primos y abuelos. A la gente de esta provincia, Los Rios, se la conoce como montubios. Ellos trabajan su tierra, cuidan sus animales y son campeones en los Rodeos Montubios. Las niñas de su familia siempre esperan con ansias sus quinceañeras, pues estas son celebradas con grandes fiestas rosadas. Se dice que la quinceañera es la manera de que los padres enseñan a la sociedad y a posibles pretendientes, que su hija ya es una mujer. El dia de Kerly fue muy agitado entre peinados, vestido y comida. Toda la familia Aguayo apoya a los padres contribuyendo con partes de la fiesta. Unos traen comida, otros bebida, otros le dan el vestido a la niña etc. Sus primos aún menores son parte de su corte y practican una coreografía para bailar en la noche tan esperada.

Esta historia es parte de una mas grande sobre la familia Aguayo, a la cual he venido documentando desde el 2008.

Kerly Aguayo lives in the Hacienda La Mariana, (Los Rios province, Ecuador) along with her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. To the people of the province of Los Rios they are known as Montubios. They work their land; care for their animals and are champions in the Rodeos Montubios. The family’s girls always wait anxiously for their quinceañeras, which are celebrated with large, pink parties.

They say the quinceañera is the way in which the parents show society and potential suitors that their daughter is a woman. Kerly’s big day is a bustling event complete with numerous hairstyles, dresses and food. The whole of the Aguayo family help Kerly’s parents by contributing towards different aspects of the party. Some bring food, others drink, others give the dress to the young girl, and so on. Her younger cousins are part of her court and have practiced a choreographed dance to perform on this highly anticipated night.

This story forms part of a bigger one about the Aguayo family who I began to document in 2008.

Rochi León Aguas Populares La playa es el lugar preferido por las personas para disfrutar del caluroso verano limeño, pero la costa no está cerca de todos y optar por una diversión acuática en cemento es casi una obligación.

El mar es sólo accesible para aquellos que con suerte tienen la costa cerca de donde viven, pero la mayoría de los barrios populares y más poblados de Lima no pertenecen a ese grupo selecto. Ante tanta demanda, son las piscinas populares los oasis anhelados por miles de personas que intentan combatir el excesivo calor de una agotada capital.

Gente de toda edad, en familia o con amigos, disfrutan de varios litros de agua y cloro, mientras que de fondo musical suena alguna cumbia de moda. Es aquí donde se olvida cualquier imperfección incómoda que se crea tener. El agua acepta la asimetría y disimula con sus ondas todo rasgo particular que diferencia a uno del otro.

Estos espacios no admiten juicios, homogeneizando en la semi-desnudez y vulnerabilidad, congregando a todos, emparejando las diferencias, universalizando lo singular y remitiéndonos al principio más fundamental: en estas aguas todos somos iguales.

The beach is the favorite spot for people to enjoy the hot summer in Lima, but coast is not close to everyone and choosing a fun aquatic option in concrete is almost an obligation. The sea is only approachable to those lucky ones in the city who have the coast near to where they live, but most of the popular and most crowded neighborhoods in Lima don’t belong to that selected group.

At such huge demand public pools are the desired oasis for hundreds of people who intend to fight the excessive heat of an exhausted city. Some of this pools can receive up to 1500 bathers per day each summer season. People from all ages, in family or with friends, enjoy these various liters of water and chlorine, while in the back famous cumbia music is playing.

Its here where any awkward imperfection one believes may have is forgotten. The water accepts the asymmetry and conceals with its waves any particular feature that may differentiate one from another.

These spaces don’t allow judgements, homogenizing in the undress and vulnerability, gathering everyone, pairing the differences, universalizing the singular and referring us to the most fundamental principle: in this waters we are all the same.

Adriana Zehbrauskas Black Mexico: an isolated and often forgotten culture José María Morelos, Mexico: Este pueblo aislado, que fue nombrado así por un héroe independentista, quien se cree que fue ayudado por sus ancestros a abolir la esclavitud en México. El pueblo se sitúa en las áridas colinas del suroeste de México, entre un pequeño número de pueblos y aldeas, que durante mucho tiempo acogieron una larga herencia de esclavos africanos que llegaron a México para trabajar en las minas y en las plantaciones de azúcar durante el siglo XVI. Queda mencionar la cantidad de gente dispuesta a compartir este orgullo; quizá sería importante comprobar como México intenta hacer algo que no se había planteado en las ultimas décadas, y mucho menos en su población actual: preguntar a la gente si se consideran a si mismos africanos.

José María Morelos, Mexico: this isolated village is named for an independence hero, thought to have had black ancestors, who helped abolish slavery in Mexico. It lies in the rugged hills of southwestern Mexico, among a smattering of towns and hamlets that have long embraced a heritage from African slaves who were brought here to work in mines and on sugar plantations in the 16th century.

Just how many people are willing to share that pride may soon be put to the test as Mexico moves to do something it has not attempted in decades and never on its modern census: ask people if they consider themselves black.

Solange Adum Abdala Ornis II. La muerte es hermosa y la eternidad también A partir de los elementos formales que se han utilizados típicamente en las clasificaciones zoológicas, las series “Ornis I” y “Ornis II “La muerte es hermosa y la eternidad también”, plantean una reflexión sobre la muerte del individuo y lo que queda tras la vida. El el vuelo de los pájaros, que tradicionalmente se asocia a la sensación de libertad, queda transfigurado en estas imagines fotografiadas en el Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad Mayor de San Marcos. Donde los individuos estáticos pasan a representar familias enteras de animales que aún siguen vivos.

Beginning with the formal elements that have been typically used in zoological classifications, the series Ornis I and Ornis II Death is Beautiful and Eternity Also, is a reflection on the death of the individual and what awaits them after life. The flight of birds, traditionally associated with the sensation of liberty, is transfigured in these photographic images in the Museo de Historia Natural (Museum of Natural History) at the University Mayor in San Marcos, where static individuals represent whole families of animals that still live.

Joana Toro I am Hello Kitty Being Latino immigrant to the United States is an enormous challenge, even with correct immigration papers. Many immigrants find themselves working jobs that US citizens avoid, struggling in precarious or humiliating conditions for little money. This project documents my own personal experience working for tips as a street entertainment worker – dressed up as Hello Kitty – in NYC’s Times Square. While studying English in NYC, I had to resort to this difficult and poorly paid work in order to pay for my schooling.

This strange job is carried out by several hundred immigrants, almost entirely Latinos. As entertainment workers, we stand for pictures with tourists and their children who are thrilled to pose with their favorite cartoon figures. Yet, even as we help to create the lively, colorful panorama that males Time Square a prime destination for tourists, we are often subject to insults, sexual groping and other humiliations by passer-bys. Many do not view us as human beings but rather as toys for their amusement or as objects of contempt.

Ser un inmigrante latinoamericano en los Estados Unidos es un desafío enorme así tengas los papeles de inmigración correctos. Muchos inmigrantes se encuentran trabajando en condiciones peligrosas , humillantes y por poco dinero. Suelen ser trabajos que ciudadanos estadounidenses evitan. Este proyecto narra mi experiencia personal al trabajar en el entretenimiento de calle, vestida como ‘Hello Kitty’- en el Times Square en Nueva York. Durante mis estudios para aprender inglés como último recurso, tenía que trabajar así. Poco dinero , un trabajo de segunda era la único que encontre para financiar mis estudios.

Este trabajo suelen ser inmigrantes y la gran mayoría son Latinoamericanos. Como trabajadores del entretenimiento de calle estamos de pie todo el día para hacernos fotos con muchos turistas, ya que son sus hijos los que se emocionan viendo a sus personajes favoritos. A pesar de que contribuimos a un panorama colorido, Times Square es un destino muy popular para los turistas. En esta parte tan conocida de la ciudad, quedamos sometidos a insultos, agresiones físicas y otras humillaciones por transeúntes. Mucha gente no nos ve como seres humanos sino como juguetes para su diversión o como objetos.

Mayerling García El Crucero Una serie fotográfica sobre las vivencias cotidianas en un pueblo que se llama El Crucero, en Managua, Nicaragua. Estas imágenes presentan a El Crucero como un lugar que se comunica con el paisaje misterioso y mágico, que enseña fragmentos de lo intocable, dónde el tiempo imprime más misticismo basados en su manera de pensar, la luz del sol o incluso la niebla imponente que envuelve la luz y la hace tiritar antes su presencia. Un pueblo donde nada es lo que parece, de hecho tiene historias escondidas. El paisaje rural es el principal escenario que unifica todo, donde podemos encontrar de una manera silenciosa momentos raros, escaleras al cielo, edificios extraños, niños que viven en un cementerio y la niebla procedente de ninguna parte.

El estado de ánimo de este lugar se acerca a la estética de un mundo onírico a través de los colores, la niebla densa, las calidades visuales y espaciales del paisaje que tienen que ver con la totalidad y el vacío de la gente que vive en este lugar.

A photographic series about the day-to-day living in a town called El Crucero in Managua, Nicaragua. The images show El Crucero as a place that communicates with the mysterious and magical landscape; that shows fragments of the untouchable, where the weather imprints more mysticism based on its state of mind; the sunlight or even the imposing mist that shrouds and makes the light tremble before its presence.

A town where nothing seems to happen or that it has hidden stories.

The main stage that unifies is the rural landscape, where we can find in a quiet way strange moments; stairways to heaven, strange buildings, children that live in a graveyard and the mist that comes from nowhere. The place’s state of mind gets close to the aesthetic of an oneiric world through the colours, the dense mist of the place, the visual and spatial qualities of the landscape that attends to the vacuum, the whole and the void of the people living in the place.

Betty Laura Zapata X-Ray Project X-Ray tries to touch on how public hospitals in Venezuela are immersed in their own emergency; an internal photographic documentation of the decomposition of public healthcare facilities and the suffering of vulnerable patients in a moment when the country has been immersed in one of the biggest economic and political crises of its history.

The Venezuelan public health care situation is a microcosm of the situation in the country as a whole.

Poverty, violence, internal political conflicts, corruption, negligence and abandonment are the constant realities that are present both within the walls of public hospitals and amplified within the borders of Venezuela.

La intención del Proyecto X-Ray es enfocarse en los hospitales públicos de Venezuela , los cuales siempre están inundados de emergencias. X-Ray es una documentación fotográfica interna sobre el declive de la accesibilidad de atenciones médicas públicas y el sufrimiento de pacientes vulnerables durante el tiempo en el que el país ha estado sumergido en una de las mas grandes crisis económicas y políticas de su historia.

Los problemas en las atenciones médicas venezolanas son sólo un microcosmo en medio del entorno del país.La pobreza, violencia, conflictos políticos internos, corrupción, negligencia y abandono, son las realidades constantes que están presentes entre las paredes de los hospitales en Venezuela.

Jasmine Bakalarz Ballroom Dancers Sus fotografías varían de documentación social a retratos formales e íntimos. Confrontan temáticas sociales como el género, la identidad cultural, la inmigración y conflictos actuales de estructuras sociales y políticas. Desarrolla e investiga estos temas a través de varios ensayos de retratos de niños. Estos retratos exploran la complejidad de la niñez, de sus sueños y esperanzas pero también sus diversas realidades sociales. Asimismo, documenta ritos ceremonias culturales y religiosas que marcan una transición en la infancia. Su último trabajo desarrollado en una residencia situada donde fue Gueto de Varsovia, Polonia, retrata a mujeres y niños de la comunidad judía de esta ciudad.

Her photographs vary from social documentation to the formal and intimate portrait. Challenges social themes such as gender, cultural identity, immigration and current conflicts of a social and political nature. I develop and investigate these themes through taking children’s portraits in various contexts. These portraits explore the complexity of childhood, of children’s dreams and hopes but also their diverse social realities. I want to document cultural and religious rituals and the ceremonies that mark the transition from infancy.

Her last piece was developed in Poland during a residency on the site of the Warsaw Ghetto. I made portraits of women and children from Warsaw’s Jewish community.

Lorena Marchetti Periferias Series que registran una suerte de periferias y paisajes Latinoamericanos. Paisajes desde un punto de vista geográfico en altura. En este caso son registros de la ciudad de Lima y sus periferias; en Perú.

Territorios que varían en función de los diferentes autores, actores así como su geografía política, social, sus hábitats y usos culturales. Construcciones y bloques superpuestos, concretos tupidos de vegetación, salvajes, inamovibles completamente ausentes de su masa humana. La naturaleza transportada a las megalópolis. Restos de esos paisajes que habitamos sin presencia de vida en sus bordes. En el caso particular de Lima; su geografía está dividida entre costa y sierra. Tiene un clima muy particular con una persistente cobertura nubosa. Exagerando esa nebulosa permanente del cielo; registré estos paisajes de la ciudad donde su caos demográfico, organizativo urbano y sus disonancias se expanden hacia las rocas desérticas costeras de la periferia, generando así nuevas situaciones cotidianas urbanas y neo-paisajes que invitan a nuevas reflexiones.Cada uno de los barrios populares o barrios nuevos como son llamados que al mejor estilo de corales conforman un arrecife, surgidos de la nada, se convierten en epicentros y asentamientos informales que van conformando el mosaico de la ciudad creando paisajes muy propios.

Series that explores all kinds of outskirts and Latin American landscapes. I have always dedicated myself to the recording of urban spaces and cities. However in 2011 the inspiration that gave rise to these series, which includes what I call ‘Cosmovisión Latina’, were landscapes viewed from a position of high altitude.

Also the focus and exaggeration of such particular chromatic palettes are specific to each context.

Everything spreads and stretches out at high altitude: from the flight of a bird, to the travelling painter or an incidental tourist. Back in 2011 I was documenting images in much greater detail; once zoomed in, many more small, subtle and private worlds reveal themselves.A town where nothing seems to happen or that it has hidden stories. In this particular case it’s Lima; its geography is divided between coast and desert. It has a very specific climate with persistent cloud cover. Exaggerating that permanent cloudy sky, I recorded these city landscapes where their demographic chaos, urban organization and discord stretch all the way out to the desert coastal rocks on the outskirts, and from this, generating new daily urban situations and neon landscapes that invite new reflections.

Guadalupe Ruiz Nada es eterno En teoría, la familia es una comunidad establecida primero sobre las bases de una solidaridad afectiva, cubriendo las necesidades básicas, regulando la vida moral en sociedad, constituyendo uno de los tres pilares de su sustentación (los otros dos serían el mercado y el Estado). En América Latina, los lazos de parentesco son importantes y están presentes en toda las etapas de la vida personal. La familia regula y sostiene las relaciones en prácticamente todos los niveles.

La representación de la familia es una importante parte del trabajo de Guadalupe Ruiz, artista colombiana. En busca de lo que llama «epifanía doméstica», la artista cuestiona estereotipos y documenta tristezas, fracasos, alegrías, novedades. El trabajo es documental, aparentemente sin cualquier preparación previa de los retratados, y trata de captar partes del cotidiano, ora con ternura y alguna amargura, desafiando temas referentes a la identidad y a representaciones sociales, con humor y fina ironía. Una poética familiar preparada para desafiar a los clichés.

In theory, the family is a community based first on an affectionate solidarity, covering life’s basic necessities, regulating one’s moral choices and constitutes one of the three pillars supporting society (the others being the market and the state). In Latin America the ties within family relationships are important and are present at all stages of our personal lives. The family regulates and sustains relationships on almost all levels. Representing the family is an important part of Colombian artist Guadalupe Ruiz’s work. In the search for what she calls ‘domestic epiphany’ the artist challenges stereotypes and documents sadness, failures, happiness and changes. The work is documental; Guadalupe states she does not prepare before she takes these portraits which aim to capture aspects of daily life. She speaks with tenderness, sorrow, humour and subtle irony through her work which challenges identity and social representations. Her work has a poetic familiarity which is prepared to challenge clichés.

Lena Szankay Mímesis Mímesis surgió de la conscientización de ciertos espacios físicos - emocionales con relación a mi identidad, de lo ligado del ser humano a su ámbito y su cultura y del desgarro de la ausencia y la presencia. Como me considero perteneciente a dos culturas, la argentina y la alemana, opté por trabajar con dípticos los cuales construyo con imágenes de la intimidad de ambas geografías.

Los organizo según tres ejes: lo formal, lo cromático y lo conceptual. Busco la condensación del par vida – muerte, de la fragilidad del cuerpo, el inevitable paso del tiempo y la caducidad de lo bello. Las mujeres siempre han sido además, objeto de mi observación. No me interesa tanto lo anecdótico, sí lo narrativo. Es documental pero siempre con una dimensión emocional por detrás.

Mímesis emerged from an awareness of certain physical and emotional spaces, which related to my identity.

The work came out of reflecting on what it means to be human – from someone’s immediate surroundings to their culture and the tension between the absence and presence of certain factors. As I feel connected to two cultures, those of Argentina and Germany, I opted to work with diptychs constructed with intimate images from both geographical locations. I organised them around three central ideas: the formal, the chromatic and the conceptual. I sought to represent the inevitability of life, such as death, the fragility of the body, the inevitable passing of time and the expiration of beauty. Furthermore, women have always been a focus of my observations. I’m not interested so much in the anecdotal, rather the narrative. It’s documental but always has an emotional dimension to it.

Jasmine Bakalarz Argentina Nació en Buenos Aires en 1985 y desde entonces vive entre la Argentina y Canadá. Recibió su licenciatura en Bellas Artes de Concordia University de Montréal, con especialización en fotografía. Realizó talleres en Nueva York con Mary Ellen Mark, en Toronto con Alessandra Sanguinetti, Magnum Photography, y partició en una residencia artística en Letonia con Hellen Van Meene. En la Argentina fue seleccionada para la Beca Fondo Nacional de las Artes EcuNHI 2010, PAC 2013 y actualmente cursa en el programa de posgrado Proyecto Documental con Andrés Di Tella en la Universidad Torcuato Di Tella.

Regularmente expone en Argentina (Centro Culttural Recoleta, Museo Emilio Caraffa, Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Misiones, Galería Bisagra, Fundación ArtexArte, Centro Cultural Borges, ArteBA 2011/13, BAphoto Espacio OSDE 2011) y en el exterior (Nueva York Photo Festival, la Embajada Argentina en París y Berlín, Gallery 44 Toronto, Lilian Rodriguez Gallery Montréal, Kuldigas Center Letonia, McCord Museum of Fine Art Montréal). Sus premios incluyen: Magenta Foundation 2012, Salón Nacional Avon 2010, Banco Ciudad 2010, beca del Ontario Arts Council Canada 2012 y del Fondo Nacional de las Artes 2013.

Recibió un subsidio del Fondo Metropolitano de las Artes para realizar Proyecto Coordenadas: Fotografía en la Vía Pública.

En el 2014 fue seleccionada para una residencia en el Museum for the History of Polish Jews, situado donde existió el Gueto de Varsovia. Actualmente vive en Buenos Aires y trabaja como fotógrafa en el Centro Cultural de la Memoria Haroldo Conti (ex – ESMA) junto con diversas fundaciones en proyectos y talleres fotográficos en barrios y cárceles de mujeres.

Jasmine Bakalarz was born in Buenos Aires in 1985 and has since lived between both Argentina and Canada. She completed her degree in Fine Arts at the Concordia University in Montréal, where she specialised in photography. She has attended workshops in New York with Mary Ellen Mark, in Toronto with Alessandra Sanguinetti (Magnum Photography) and was involved in an artistic residency in Latvia with Hellen Van Meene. In 2010 she was selected by ECuNHi (Espacio Cultural) for the Fondo Nacional de las Artes grant in Argentina,

by PAC in 2013 and is currently attending the postgraduate Documental programme with Andrés Di Tella at the University Torcuato Di Tella. She regularly exhibits her work in Argentina’s Centro Cultural Recoleta, Museo Emilio Caraffa, Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Misiones, Galería Bisagra, Fundación ArtexArte, Centro Cultural Borges, arteBA (2011/13) and BAphoto Espacio OSDE (2011), and internationally at the New York Photo Festival, La Embajada Argentina in both Paris and Berlin, Gallery 44 (Toronto), Lilian Rodriguez Gallery (Montréal), Kuldigas Center (Latvia) and the McCord Museum of Fine Art (Montréal). The prizes she has been awarded include the Magenta Foundation (2012), Salón Nacional Avon (2010), Banco Ciudad (2010), a grant from the Ontario Arts Council Canada (2012) and from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes 2013. She was given a subsidy from the Fondo Metropolitano de las Artes to make Proyecto Coordenadas: Fotografía en la Vía Pública (Project Co-ordinates: Photography in the Public Road of Buenos Aires). In 2014 she was selected for a residency at the Museum for the History of Polish Jews, situated on the site of the Warsaw Ghetto. She currently lives in Buenos Aires and works as a photographer at the Centro Cultural de la Memoria Haroldo Conti (ex ESMA). She also works with various foundations that run photographic projects and workshops in red light districts and women’s prisons.

Lorena Endara Panamá Nació en 1984 en La Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá. Empezó ha interesarse en la fotografía a partir de los diecisiete años y lo ha practicado desde entonces. Sus obras pertenecen a colecciones privadas y públicas y han sido expuestas alrededor del mundo en instituciones como: el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Roma), el Banco Mundial (Washington, DC) y Casa Gongora(Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá).

Lorena Endara (b. 1984, Panama City, Panama) became interested in photography at the age of seventeen and has been practicing ever since. Her artwork belongs to both private and public collections and has been exhibited throughout the world, in institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, the World Bank in Washinton, DC, and Casa Gongora in Panama City, Panama. Lorena has participated in several residency programs, including the Guapamacataro Interdisciplinary Residency in Art and Ecology and the First International Encounter for Public Interventions in Quito, Ecuador. She has also received several awards and honorable mentions for her photography, from organizations such as IILA-Fotografia, the Banff Center, and Daylight Magazine and the Center for Documentary Studies. For four years, Lorena served as the director of Cambio Creativo, a community arts program in Coco Solo, Panama. She is currently based out of Los Angeles, California where she teaches and creates multimedia art.

Karla Gachet Ecuador Karla Gachet nace en Quito, Ecuador en 1977. Estudia arte y diseño gráfico, siendo finalmente seducida por el fotoperiodismo en la Universidad de San José, California. Trabaja para Diario El Comercio (2005) convirtiéndose en la primera mujer que forme parte de su staff de periodistas gráficos. En la actualidad trabaja freelance y está representada por la agencia Panos Pictures de Londres.

Publica en medios como National Geographic Magazine, Smithsonian y The New York Times, entre los más prestigiosos. Ha publicado dos libros junto con su esposo también fotógrafo, Ivan Kashinsky. El primero “Historias Mínimas: De Ecuador a Tierra del Fuego” trata sobre un viaje al sur, donde documentan catorce crónicas durante un viaje por tierra a través de cinco países. Su último libro “Gypsy Kings” (2012) recoge el material de una historia que realizaron en Rumania sobre una comunidad de gitanos millonarios. Gachet ha sido reconocida en los mejores concursos de fotoperiodismo como World Press Photo (2010) POY (2010) BOP (2008) y ganó el tercer lugar en “Mejor Fotógrafo del Año” del POYi Latin América (2011). Sus fotografías han sido expuestas en Quito, Cuenca, Londres y Los Ángeles. Crea junto con Kashinsky el colectivo Runa Photos (2011), una plataforma de fotografía documental.

Karla always loved the magic of reading and telling tales. For this reason, she dedicates her life to having encounters with strangers to tell their stories. She is attracted to the ordinary, and tries to find the equilibrium where composition intercepts with human life. She lives in the belly button of the world where she knits up her never-ending tales.

Kara Gachet was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1977. Though she studied art and graphic design there, it was studying photojournalism at San Jose State University in California that ultimately captured her imagination. She began working for the newspaper Diario El Comercio in 2005. She also works freelance and is currently represented by the London based agency Panos Pictures. She has published two books alongside her fellow photographer and husband, Ivan Kashinsky. The first is entitled Historias Mínimas: De Ecuador a Tierra del Fuego (2009) (Mining Histories: From Ecuador to Tierra del Fuego) which documents a journey through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. This book is comprised of fourteen photographic chronicles that were documented during their travels. Her latest book, Gypsy Kings (2012) is a collection of photographs taken in Romania that tell a story about a community of gypsy millionaires. Gachet has been recognised by some of the most prestigious competitions in photojournalism such as World Press Photo (2010), POY (2010) and BOP (2008). She also won third place for ‘Best Photographer of the Year’ for POYi Latin América (2011). Her photographs have been exhibited in Quito, Cuenca, London and Los Angeles. She creates work alongside Kashinsky under the collective Runa Photos (2011), a platform for documentary photography.

Mayerling García Xxxxxx 1981 Estelí. Vive en Managua. Originalmente se formó como Comunicadora Social. Se acerca a la fotografía y se especializa en la fotografía documental, empieza a trabajar con periódicos nacionales y agencias internacionales de noticias. Con el tiempo se distancia del fotoperiodismo e inicia una búsqueda de una fotografía personal, narrativa y “sutilmente literaria”. También se enfoca en cuestiones o temas sociales contemporáneas, con una visión muy íntima de la vida cotidiana.

García también ha sido parte de varias exposiciones colectivas, tales como, Instituto Cervantes, Praga, República Checa; Alianza Francesa, Managua, Nicaragua; Delhi Photo Festival. Mayerling García was born in 1981 and lives in Managua, Nicaragua. Originally she trained in social communications at university. She discovered an affinity with photography and specialized in documental photography, beginning work with national newspapers and international news agencies. With time she began to move away from photojournalism and began looking for a personal type of photography with a narrative and a “literary subtleness”. She also began to focus on contemporary social themes and matters, with a vision of portraying everyday life on a very intimate level.

García has been part of several collective exhibitions, such as, Cervantes Institute, Prague, Czech Republic; French Alliance, Managua, Nicaragua; Delhi Photo Festival. New Delhi, India; Festival Photoweek, Washington DC; Nano Foto Fest, Festival de fotografía, (Photography Festival), Gallery arte x arte, Buenos Aires, Argentina; BBK KUnstforum Dusseldoorf and the Embassy of Nicaragua in Berlin, among many others.

Rochi León Perú Nace y crece en Lima, Perú. Estudió Artes Plásticas en la Universidad Católica y posteriormente fotografía en el Centro de la Imagen.

También tomó un año de fotografía en la Universidad Internacional de Arte y Diseño de Miami.

Ha trabajado como fotógrafa para diferentes medios de prensa peruanos como el diario El Comercio, Perú21, Gestión, Velaverde entre otros. Actualmente trabaja como editora fotográfica de VIÙ, una revista semanal del diario El Comercio.

Siempre ha desarrollado su trabajo en el área de la fotografía documental. Desde niña tuvo un contacto cercano con la cultura popular/emergente en el Perú, la cual se define como la confluencia entre la cultura urbana y las influencias de los inmigrantes tradicionales en Lima. Su trabajo ha sido influenciado en su mayoría por este híbrido cultural. Trata de dar una visión de su país a través de sus índices económicos, sociales y culturales.

Rochi León was born and grew up in Lima, Peru. She studied the Fine art at the Universidad Católica (Pontifical Catholic University of Peru) and then photography, at the Centro de la Imagen (Image Centre). She also studied at the Miami International University of Art and Design. León has worked as a photographer for different Peruvian media such as El Comercio, Perú21, Gestión, Velaverde, among others.

She currently works as a photography editor for VIÙ, a weekly magazineconnected to the daily paper, El Comercio.

She has always developed her work within the area of documentary photography. Since she was a little girl she felt a close connection with the popular and emerging culture of Peru; defined by the confluence between urban culture and the influences from traditional immigrants in Lima. Her work has mainly been influenced by this cultural hybrid. León tries to give a vision of her country through its different economic, social and cultural levels.

Luego de graduarse como diseñadora en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (U.B.A.) realizó estudios de fotografía y clínicas de arte con Gabriel Valansi, Diana Aisenberg y Guillermo Ueno. Del 2002 al 2006 realizó tareas de colaboración para la Fundación ph15, Organización no gubernamental sin fines de lucro. En el 2006 participó de la Beca para talleres en el Fondo Nacional de las Artes (F.N.A.).

Lorena Marchetti is a photographer and graphic designer who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she now lives and works. After graduating as a designer from the University of Buenos Aires she set up photography workshops and art clinics with Gabriel Valansi, Diana Aisenberg and Guillermo Ueno. In 2006 she received a scholarship to attend workshops at the Fondo Nacional de las Artes (National Art Fund). Also, from 2002 to 2006, she made collaborative artwork and designs for the la Fundación ph15, a not for profit non-governmental organisation. In 2013, she formed part of the Programa Prácticas Artísticas Contemporáneas (Program of Contemporary Artistic Practices) organised by the Gachi Prieto Gallery of Contemporary Latin American Art. Since 2005, her work has been shown in both collective and individual shows based in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru. Guadalupe Ruiz Colombia (1978, Bogotá, Colombie) vive y trabaja en Biel (Suiza). Estudio fotografía en las escuelas de arte de Lausanne (ECAL) y Zürich (HGKZ). Actualmente esta trabajando en su proyecto fotográfco : KLEINE FOTOENZYCLOPEDIE, que consiste en un libro de artista a manera de una enciclopedia de fotografía.

Born in 1978 in Bogota, Colombia, Guadalupe Ruiz moved to Switzerland in 1996 with art studies in mind. She studies photography at the ECAL in Lausanne and the HGKZ in Zürich. In 2004 and 2005, she twice won the renowned price Kiefer Hablitzel. More recently in 2009 and 2011 her work has been recognized by the city of Zürich and awarded a study journey in San Francisco and Genova. Also, Guadalupe is currently working on a personal project: KLEINE FOTOENZYCLOPËDIE which shall start hit the libraries in the fall of 2015.

Lena Szankay Argentina Es fotógrafa, docente y gestora cultural. Su biografía está marcada por cambios de países que agudizaron su noción de identidad: nacida en Argentina, pero vivió sus dos primeros años de vida en Alemania, su adolescencia en Lima y emigró a Berlín a principios de 1989, observando los cambios de paradigma como consecuencia de la caída del Muro en el mes de Noviembre de ese mismo año. En esa ciudad, egresó de la Escuela Alemana de Fotografía Profesional Lette Verein, además de obtener el título otorgado por la Cámara Oficial de Fotógrafos de la Cámara de Comercio e Industria. Fue directora de la fotogalería Schautankstelle y organizó muestras de fotografía en diversas instituciones alemanas. Retornó a Buenos Aires en el 2008 y fue columnista por 3 años de la revista de cultura del diario El Clarín, en la revista Ñ. Expone de forma individual y grupal desde 1995, destacándose: Museum für Völkerkunde de Hamburgo, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Goethe Institut y Museo de Kreuzberg, todos ellos en Berlín; Bienal de Fotografía (Tenerife), Galería Windspiel (Viena), Al Kahf Gallery (Palestina), Gallery Twenty Four (Tel Aviv). El fotolibro “Santa Fe litoral” fue cofinanciado por la Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Beca a la Creación por el Fondo Nacional de las Artes. Seleccionada en dos ocasiones en el Premio Petrobrás, en Espacio Plataforma del Itaú Cultural, en Premio Amec de Fotografía Contemporánea y en Premios Andreani. Tercer Premio en la Subcategoría Libros Nature, del Prix de la Photography, París.

Su aporte al medio fotográfico está documentado en el libro “Fotógrafas argentinas contemporáneas”, editada por Editorial La Azotea, 2013.

Lena Szankay is a photographer and teacher. She also serves on a cultural management committee. The various countries where she has lived in have influenced her sense of identity. Born in Argentina, lived in Germany for the first two years of her life. She spent her adolescence in Lima and later emigrated to Berlin in 1989, where she experienced the paradigm shifting events that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. There she graduated from the Lette-Verein school of professional photography, and was also awarded the title Cámara Oficial de Fotógrafos from the Cámara de Comercio e Industria (Chamber of Commerce and Industry). She has worked as director of the photo gallery Schautankstelle and has organised photographic exhibitions within various German institutions. She returned to Buenos Aires in 2008 and worked as a columnist for three years for Ñ, a cultural magazine for the Argentinian newspaper, El Clarín.

She has exhibited work both individually and in groups since 1995. Some of the places she has exhibited include: the Museum für Völkerkunde (Museum of Ethnology, Hamburg); the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of World Cultures), the Goethe Institute and the Kreuzberg Museum, all situated in Berlin; the Bienal de Fotografía (Tenerife); Galería Windspiel (Vienna); Al

Joana Toro Colombia Es una fotoperiodista autodidacta. Actualmente vive en Nueva York pero nació en Bogotá, Colombia. Ha trabajado como fotógrafa para revistas y periódicos importantes en su país. En 2009 el Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia le otorgó el premio de la Fotografía Nacional por su documentación en patrimonio cultural. Su trabajo fue incluido en la Colección de Fotografía Latinoamericana (2012) entre Fotografía Americana.

En 2012, Joana emigró a los Estados Unidos para seguir con su carrera como una artista documental. Su proyecto personal, I Am Hello Kitty, documenta su propia experiencia como inmigrante latina en NYC. En 2014 I Am Hello Kitty fue publicado en LENS blog de fotoperiodismo del New York Times.

Durante el 2014-2015 el trabajo de Joana fue publicado en En Foco, una plataforma que promueve las bellas artes y la fotografía documental de grupos de personas diversos en etnias. Asimismo, Joana es socia de Guild y colaboradora de Redux Pictures.

Recientemente Toro publicó su primer monografía, Masked (oodee, London, 2014). Masked fue lanzado durante una muestra colaborativa en la Galería Valenzuela Klenner de Bogotá. Desde su publicación las primeras copias ya se han agotado.

Joana is a self-taught photojournalist based in New York City. She was born in Bogotá, Colombia. She worked as a staff photographer with the major magazines and newspapers in her native country. In 2009, the Colombian Ministry of Culture awarded her the national photography prize for her documentation of cultural heritage. Her work is included in the 2012 Latin American Photography Collection of American Photography.

In 2011, Joana migrated to the United States to pursue her career as a documentarian and artist. Her personal project, “I Am Hello Kitty” documents her own experience as a Latina immigrant in NYC. “I Am Hello Kitty” was featured on The New York Times LENS blog in 2014.

Joana is a 2014-2015 En Foco fellow. She is a member of Guild and a contributor to Redux Pictures.

Joana recently published her first monograph, Masked (oodee, London, 2014). Masked was inaugurated with a group exhibition at the Galería Valenzuela Klenner in Bogotá. Masked is sold out.

Adriana Zehbrauskas Brasil Nació en Sao Paulo, Brasil donde recibe su diploma en periodismo. Posteriormente se muda a Paris donde estudia lingüística y fonética en la Sorbonne Nouvelle. Al regresar a Brasil, trabaja como fotógrafa para Folha de S. Paulo, Brasil, durante once años, viajando alrededor de todo el país y al extranjero.

Como fotoperiodista residenciada en Ciudad de México, trabaja de forma autónoma y contribuye con frecuencia a varias publicaciones internacionales, tales como, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, Glamour Magazine, The Guardian, Paris Match, Le Figaro, Save the Children y el World Health Organization entre otros.

Asimismo, Adriana es una de las tres fotógrafas con perfil en el documental Beyond Assignment (USA, 2011), al lado de Mariella Furrer y Gali Tibbon. La película fue producida por el centro internacional The Knight Media y la Universidad de Miami y con la colaboración de Tepito Project.

Su proyecto sobre la fé entre Brasil y México recibió el premio de Art & Worship World por el Niavaran Artistic Creation Foundation y actualmente su libro está siendo producido y será publicado por Bei Editores en São Paulo, Brasil. Zehbrauskas fue finalista en New York Photo Awards en 2009 y 2010 y por el momento es instructora en la Foundry Photojournalism Workshops.

She received a degree in Journalism and moved to Paris where she studied Linguistics and Phonetics at the Sorbonne Nouvelle. She worked as a staff photographer for Folha de S. Paulo, in Brazil, for 11 years, traveling extensively throughout the country and abroad. As a free-lancer photojurnalist based in Mexico City, she contributes regularly with the New York Times. Other clients include the Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Times, Sunday Telegraph, Glamour Magazine, The Guardian, Paris Match, Le Figaro, Save the Children and the World Health Organization among others.

Adriana is one of the three photographers profiled in the documentary “Beyond Assignment” (USA, 2011), alongside Mariella Furrer and Gali Tibbon. The film was produced by The Knight Center for International Media and the University of Miami and features the Tepito project.

Betty Laura Zapata Venezuela Betty Laura Zapata nació en Coro, Venezuela. Betty es fotógrafa documental y periodista, enfocada principalmente en temas sociales latinoamericanos y diferentes culturas. Su deseo, es trabajar en historias alrededor del mundo que sean poco conocidas, pero que merecen más atención.

Betty ha trabajado como periodista en Venezuela para diferentes medios como la televisora Televen y Semanario Quinto Dia. Después de muchos años, ella decidió enfocarse en la fotografía como una nueva manera de continuar descubriendo historias de alrededor del mundo.

Recientemente se graduó en “London College of Communication”(University of Arts London) con un Master en Fotoperiodismo y fotografía documental.

Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en la muestra grupal “Consider This” en London College of Communication y en “The Free Range”(Londres) en el 2013.

Betty Laura Zapata was born in Coro, Venezuela. She is a documentary photographer and journalist focusing mainly in social issues in Latin American and different cultures, with the desire to work on stories around the world, which are under-reported but deserve more attention.

Betty has worked as Journalist in Venezuela in different medias such as the TV Station Televen, and Semanario Quinto Dia. After many years she decided to focus in Photography as a new way for her to continue discovering stories from all over the world.

She recently finished her MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography At London College of Communication (University of Arts London).

Her work has been exhibited at the group exhibition ‘Consider This” at London College of Communication and at The Free Range in 2013 (London)
