Heads of Golf

Craig O’Nions oversees golf at LWC and loves the game for its camaraderie, challenging nature and traditions. He has enjoyed playing a multitude of courses in Asia including his favourite links course; Hoiana Shores, Da Nang, Vietnam. He now regularly finds himself enjoying his golf at Blackmoor Golf Club and looks forward to exploring more of the amazing golf courses that the UK has to offer.

Adam Williams has been a scratch golfer for 30 years, having represented the Swifts team in the USA (British school side), the Northern Universities, British Universities and captained Durham University to national success. He is currently the British Amateur Speedgolf Champion.

As a self-taught golfer, Craig is passionate about participation in the sport and sees the importance in spreading the values that the game teaches. He believes that all students should have exposure to some aspect of the game and is very excited about the development and the opportunities available for students at LWC.

Adam has coached golf sides since 2000, and set up golf academies at Oakham School and the Glasgow Academy, coaching girls and boys teams to national finals.

He is passionate about links golf, plays regularly in Scotland, and is planning his next adventure to Lofoten Links, the most northerly course in the world.

Our Approach

Surrounded by some of the best golfing country in the UK, with the heathland courses of Sunningdale, Hankley Common, St Georges Hill, Wentworth, Woking, Liphook, North Hants and Blackmoor closeby, LWC golf is thriving both for those who are performing at highperformance level to those who are just starting out in the game.

New to the game

Pupils can learn the game in a fun and friendly atmosphere with coaching from PGA-qualified professionals at local ranges and facilities including Blacknest, Alton, Bowenhurst and Winchester Golf Academy, not to mention coaching and guidance from experienced LWC staff on the College grounds

The emphasis is on learning the basics and enjoying the game and catching the golfing bug!

Moving through the gears

Pupils wanting to drive their game to the next level are able to play regularly at Alton Golf Club (a 10-minute drive from LWC) where they join as junior members (at a discounted rate) and receive tuition and weekly opportunities to play during term, but also in the holidays.

Golf participation is starting to rise again in the UK and Europe, inspired by the varying ways to access the game and LWC is committed to developing programmes that encourage our pupils to get involved and creating a pathway to golf courses where they will develop into lifelong players.

Golf is brilliant for your health, your wellbeing, and your character. It also offers a myriad of job opportunities for the future.

LWC golf has a range of options:

It is a club with good practice facilities, an excellent professional, and a challenging but fair course on the rolling chalk downland hills, meaning it is playable 12 months of the year.

This is the time when their handicaps should start to tumble.

Elite performance

Those pupils playing off single-figure handicaps or moving towards this play in a competitive league within the South of England and beyond.

Members of the first team squad receive a free junior membership at the Harry Colt-designed Blackmoor Golf Club, which is consistently voted in the top 100 courses in England.

Tours

The UK is a brilliant place to tour and annually, trips occur for pupils to experience the best of links golf whether to Scotland (St Andrews), the North West or East Anglia to name but a few.

This year, the school will be visiting the Kent Coast.

“A

more than worthy neighbour of legendary Open venue Royal St George’s, Prince’s is very much a stunning historic links in its own right. It may literally be overshadowed by St George’s but Prince’s certainly doesn’t fall short in the pedigree department.”

Speedgolf

LWC is proud to be a sponsor and huge supporter of British Speedgolf, an arm of the sport that is growing in popularity across the UK and beyond.

Pupils and parents have a chance to receive coaching from National Champions and compete in introductory tournaments during the year hosted at the challenging and historic Alton Golf Club.

It is a sport where amateurs and professionals compete together, with tournaments across the UK, but also in Japan, USA, France, Finland and New Zealand.

It is also a sport that Juniors are starting to get into, and LWC aims to be at the forefront of this.

“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots, but you have to play the ball where it lies.”
