Introducing Brian Schroeder
I am so excited to be joining in Lord of Life’s ministry! As a worship leader, my first and foremost hope is to invite people into the presence of God through engaging and innovative worship music. I play current, singable, well-written songs for worship, and I also love the rich history in centuries of hymns and spiritual songs. So be ready to worship with both!
Worship & Music
I’ll also be coordinating social media (Instagram and Facebook), which I hope to use as a tool to not only keep you up-to-date on the happenings at Lord of Life, and also share well-designed devotional content that deepens your faith.
2 September 2018
Outside of church, I enjoy running, traveling, exploring fantastic restaurants and breweries around the Cities, and catching up on reality TV when I get the chance. I look forward to being part of this wonderful community and getting to know all of you! Let’s give a warm Lord of Life welcome to Brian. While everyone gets to know him online and in worship, please note Brian’s last name is pronounced SCHRAY-der. ;)
Deeper Faith. Wider Reach. by Lead Pastor Joel Wight Hoogheem September 1 marks the completion of the leadership transition at Lord of Life from Pastor Peter to me. This is an exciting time for this faith community, as we will experience the continuity of Pastor Peter’s ongoing ministry here and as we venture forward into the future God is preparing. So, to be as clear as possible and erase any confusion: Pastor Peter is not leaving Lord of Life or retiring. He is moving into a new, full-time pastoral role on staff. So, what’s next? A big piece of what’s next is the ongoing faithful ministry of this vital and vibrant congregation. St. Francis de Sales, a Roman Catholic priest, bishop, and writer who lived during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, wrote these brilliant words: Be who you are and be that well. God has given Lord of Life a unique identity and purpose, so we do not seek to be a carbon copy of other congregations and we embrace the distinctive characteristics God has given us. Lord of Life will continue to be Lord of Life and we will seek to be Lord of Life well. This being said, we do not have the privilege of resting on our laurels. This is an opportune time for us to be crystal clear that God invites us—challenges us, even—as a community to seek a deeper faith and a wider reach. Making disciples of Jesus Christ—and deepening our own discipleship—in order to love and serve the world is why this congregation exists. Self-reflection is an important key to faithfulness, so it’s crucial for us to examine our ministries and programs to ensure that our efforts and energies are focused on building disciples of Jesus Christ who love and serve the world. Are we creating opportunities for deeper faith? Are we reaching out more widely with the love of Christ? God is leading us to be a congregation that is both deep and wide.
One new possibility that is being introduced this month is an expansion of our worship styles. Lord of Life has an excellent and varied worship identity throughout the various worship opportunities we offer. Yet I believe God is nudging us to broaden our worship palate, which is an important piece of feedback we’ve received from Lord of Life members and guests. Beginning September 9, worship at 11 am on Sunday mornings will have a renewed

What excites Pastor Joel the most about the future of Lord of Life? Pastor Joel is incredibly excited about the opportunity for continued growth. This includes growing deeper and wider—deepening our faith and expanding our reach. God has entrusted Lord of Life with amazing resources for us to grow as disciples of Jesus and to go make disciples of Jesus. Both Pastor Joel and Pastor Peter look forward to the coming changes and the ways God will continue to work through the staff and congregation at Lord of Life. With the continued building in the neighborhood, there are many opportunities for outreach and growth. It’s a great time to be part of the Lord of Life community! If you have any questions about the transition that have not been answered, please contact Pastor Joel or Pastor Peter.
On September 1, Pastor Joel will officially replace Pastor Peter and become the lead pastor. Pastor Peter, however, will remain very active in our church as he moves into the new role of pastor emeritus. What this means is that Joel will take over all the responsibilities of day-to-day church leadership while Peter remains active preaching, teaching, and doing weddings, baptisms, and funerals. As your council president, I have been involved in this leadership transition over the past 18 months and I can tell what a blessing it is to have both Joel and Peter in key leadership roles moving forward. Organizations often struggle during times of change, but it has been a pleasure to watch how well these two have worked together to ensure a seamless leadership transition. For 35 years, Pastor Peter has been a brilliant leader of our congregation. We have been fortunate to have him as our pastor. Now I believe we are just as blessed to have Pastor Joel lead us through the exciting and challenging days ahead. Watching Joel over the last year and a half, I have become confident he has the experience, intellect, and grace to keep Lord of Life faithful to all God has called us to be. Many thanks to everyone who worked so diligently to make this transition happen. I am certain we have an exciting future ahead of us under Pastor Joel’s leadership. If you have questions about this transition, feel free to reach out to Pastor Joel, Pastor Peter, or to me.

want to help with worship? worship teams We have many ways for you to be involved with worship—you can choose the role that fits you best! Worship teams offer opportunities to serve as an usher, greeter, reader, or communion server at any of our worship services. Each team only serves one worship time a month. Many families enjoy serving together on a worship team. If you are looking for a more “behindthe-scenes” service opportunity, then the altar team may be the spot for you. Altar team members prepare communion, the baptismal font, and candles for worship. Team members sign up on a schedule, as they are available. Parents are able to teach their children about the preparations that happen before worship as part of the altar team. To learn more about the teams, please come to one of these gatherings in the Luther Room: Saturday, September 15, 4:30 pm Sunday, September 16, 8:30 am Monday, September 17, 10 am Wednesday, September 19, 6:30 pm Sunday, September 30, 12 noon

God Cares How You Spend Money by Pastor Chick Lane
This month ends the four-part series based on Dr. Mark Allen Powell’s insights into how God cares how we acquire, regard, manage, and spend money. These four words form the acronym ARMS. The insights are from Dr. Powell’s book, Giving to God. God’s concern about how we spend money is probably the one of the four that is most familiar to us. We are accustomed to conversations at church about how much money we give to the church and other charities. How and how much we give is certainly part of how we spend money, and most of us have thought about this before.
God cares how you acquire, regard, manage, and spend money because God wants you to live a life filled with joy. God doesn’t want money and money worries to dampen that happiness, so God cares. God knows what will bring you happiness, and this happiness is what God wants for you.
Generosity
The Bible’s message about spending is far larger than this, however. The Bible teaches us that all we have not only comes from God, but in a very real sense, still belongs to God. This means God is not just concerned about the portion of our income we give away. God is concerned about all of it, all 100%. God cares how you use all you have.
Thinking about spending all we have in a Godpleasing way may sound overwhelming—and certainly not much fun. My experience is just the opposite. In my experience people who spend with only their own interests in mind usually find their life with money to be burdensome and frustrating. Often these people buy more than they can afford, and end up lying awake at night with money worries. On the other hand, those who think about how God would have them spend live lives with money that can be characterized as generous and moderate. They may not have as many things, but they have more than enough. What they do have is a greater sense of peace with money, a greater sense of balance, a greater sense of happiness.

Let us pray for all who are listed on these pages; may your Holy Spirit be with them according to their needs. As a new school year begins, we also lift up in prayer all who educate and all who learn. We ask your blessing upon students and families, teachers and aides, administrators, bus drivers, custodians, and kitchen staff— everyone who has made a commitment to education in our community. We pray for safety in our schools, that it may be a place without fear, and that every single one of us may be instruments of your peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Revelation Study
by Pastor Donna Rohrer Many things have been used—the most recent was the Left Behind series—to actually confuse us even more about the last book in the Bible. •
What do the four horses and horsemen mean?
•
What about the bride and the harlot?
•
We kind of get the lion and the lamb, but the seven seals?
Come and join in to study these questions and more. The Apostle John wrote this book later in life while exiled on the Isle of Patmos. The early Christians heard words of encouragement, which we will also hear as we study the times and places where the followers of Jesus settled after his resurrection. The class is the same Sunday and Monday so you don’t need to miss a week if something comes up.

Technology … Friend or Foe?
by Pastor Karen Greimel The growth of technology is mind-boggling with new, more sophisticated, more efficient and user-friendly devices every year. Many clamor for the ‘latest greatest’ device. We have moved from a position of internal control to external. We are being interrupted and pressured to respond to a beep, a buzz, by clicking, texting, or answering in ways that can create significant consequences with undesirable results. We are tethered to life dependent on the next beep. Who’s running the show? •
How do you feel about technology?
•
How does it influence your parenting?
•
What impact has it had on your family relationships?
Or maybe you feel powerless about how to parent in the age of ever-changing technology. If you are feeling helpless over technology and its impact, you will want to hear Refresh’s next speaker: Mathew Meyers, MA, MLFT, who is a licensed therapist and owner of Traverse Counseling & Consulting. He will discuss the consequences of smart phones, gaming, Facebook, and more. Mathew will offer ways to interface with technology that are productive, safe, healthy, and relationship affirming. From Mathew’s blog, Relationships that Heal:
“We heal ourselves through our relationships, we become ourselves in relationships, we are who we are because of those we love and are loved by. I can think of no greater honor than to assist families, couples, parents and children in working to repair, heal,
