LifeGARDEN,

Lord of Life’s community garden, donates healthy, fresh produce to CROSS on a weekly basis during harvest. Always thinking ahead, these dedicated gardeners also prepare for a Fall Pumpkin Harvest Event. Everyone is welcome to visit and tour the garden on Sunday, October 14, after all worship services. In case of rain, the event will be October 21. All children are invited to select a favorite pumpkin from the field for their jack-o-lantern.

If you are interested in being a part of the LifeGARDEN community garden’s mission and ministry, learn more at lordoflife.org/lifegarden.

A Book by Barbara Brown Taylor—

An Altar in the World by Pastor Peter Geisendorfer-Lindgren

I am a member of a book group that is different from other book groups that I have attended. This book group is unique in that we actually read the book. OK, not always. When I went a bit far afield and chose the book “Tenth of December” there was a revolt, but generally, we will give the book a try. It is a group of six men: three lawyers, a former priest, a pastor, and one ‘normal’ person. Four of us are Catholic and two are Lutheran. We always eat good food and talk about how the current book might impact our relationship with God. Last week we got together at Arrezo at 50th and France to discuss the book, “An Altar in the World,” by Barbara Brown Taylor. I think we all gave the book a thumbs up even though Tom would prefer to only read Jesuit authors. Taylor is a preacher, professor, and Episcopal priest who has written a book that encourages the reader to find God in the ordinariness of everyday life. Her premise is that we experience God not only at church during worship, but on a walk in the park, hanging up

our laundry, blessing people sitting at the departure gate at an airport, having a short chat with the cashier at the store, and by really observing a stick, a dog, a butterfly. “The treasure we seek,” she writes, “requires no lengthy expedition, no expensive equipment, no superior attitude or special company.” We just need to be mindful of how God is present in everything we do. She agrees with Meister Eckhart who wrote, “The miracle is not to walk on water but to walk on earth.” As I move into another phase of life, I am trying, let me emphasize that word, trying to slow down. Trying to do what Taylor suggests: stop long enough to see where I am, who I am with, and how awesome this place is. The title of the book suggests that there are altars where God can be found everywhere we go. It was certainly true for me last week in the bruschetta, chicken marsala, red wine, Italian cheesecake, thoughtful words, setting sun, and warm and engaging faces of my dear friends around the table.

Lord of Life Endowment Fund

T

by Pastor Chick Lane

he Lord of Life Endowment Fund is poised to take a more important place in the ministry of our congregation. You are encouraged to help the endowment fund in its recent, exciting growth. There are two important announcements related to this growth. First, the endowment fund now has sufficient funds to begin making its first grants. The fund has reached almost $70,000, which allows it to make grants. If you are involved in a ministry that aligns with Lord of Life’s vision, and the ministry would benefit from a small grant, you are encouraged to apply to the Lord of Life Endowment Fund. The vision is,

“Lord of Life Lutheran Church exists to proclaim the saving grace of Jesus Christ and for its faith community to witness and serve God gratefully in daily life.” The location for finding more information and completing a grant application is at lordoflife.org/ endowment. Second, Lord of Life’s Endowment Fund Committee more boldly than ever invites you to consider either a gift to the fund or naming the fund in your estate plan. There is more information at lordoflife.org/endowment. Print materials regarding the endowment fund are available in the main church office. To provide important information both about estate planning and the Lord of Life Endowment Fund, there will be an estate planning information meeting:

Sunday, October 7, 12:15–1:15 pm Luther Room An attorney will provide important estate planning advice, and the endowment fund committee will provide information about the fund. All members and friends of Lord of Life are encouraged to attend. To sweeten the invitation, pie and coffee will be served.

Lord of Life and Feed My Starving Children (FMSC)—

Do You Know About Our Connection? by Denny and LaVerne Kinvig

1. Lord of Life has, and will continue, to highlight ongoing support for FMSC during the month of October. 2. Lord of Life, initiators of Group Volunteer Food Packing, was the first church to have groups pack the nutritional food supplement at their original Brooklyn Center site in 1994. Today, their home office and packing site remains in Coon Rapids. 3. Lord of Life was the first to start the “Adopt-an-Orphanage” program when we sponsored food distribution to a Ukrainian orphanage, Bald Hill. Pastor Peter was key in notifying other churches to get “on board” supporting FMSC. 4. Several Lord of Life members have been on the FMSC board and their Building Expansion Team and have received recognition at their annual gala as original partners instrumental for growth. From a hopeful goal of packing one million meals a year, FMSC is now on track to pack one million meals a day throughout the US. 5. Lord of Life members Jeff and Paige Peterson’s daughter, Emere, was the first to request a birthday party at FMSC with all gifts going to FMSC. She was 6 years old. Several of her friends followed Emere’s example and celebrated at FMSC, kicking off birthday or special occasion party requests by other small groups. 6. Lord of Life has a unique circle of support for FMSC. Our church raises money for food and shipping, we volunteer to pack food, we pray for safe delivery of the food to both Jamaica and another ministry in Uganda. Lord of Life member and St. Andrew’s Mission Jamaica Director Jeff Peterson arranges delivery and release of food in Jamaica and church members help unload and distribute food throughout Jamaica during a mission trip that also includes feeding the food to residents of West Haven Children’s Home. In Jamaica and Uganda, missionaries have seen the children’s health—cognitively and physically— improve when they have been fed FMSC food once a day! Finally, we come back to our congregation to tell the story.

8. A special thank you to all for prayers, volunteering, and donating during October 2018 towards the year 2019. God’s Work. Our Hands. Visit lordoflife.org/fmsc for more information. Questions? Please feel free to contact LaVerne Kinvig (763.478.6799).

FMSC Feed My Starving Children

7. October is your month to contribute to Lord of Life’s efforts to FMSC so they can continue to distribute food worldwide with feeding centers, orphanages, and schools. Let’s continue to enthusiastically support FMSC and be the church leaders in our community.

Connect Life!

This fall, for those who are between their 20s , 30s, and 40s, we’re offering new ways to connect to others, enliven faith, and build a deeper sense of community. This new adult ministry is called Connect Life. The first Tuesday of each month beginning on October 2 at 7 pm, Connect Life will meet at OMNI Brewing in Maple Grove. Each month will be a new topic relevant to faith and life. The group will discuss podcasts, books, thoughtprovoking questions, and get to know one another. This is a chance to come as you are and as you’re able. Please register at lordoflife.org/connectlife to reserve your spot and to receive the discussion topic(s).

by Allison (Ali) DeCamillis, MS, ATR, LPCC, Program Director for Gilda’s Club, Minneapolis A cancer diagnosis is like a stone thrown into still waters. It creates a ripple effect that impacts not just the person living with the diagnosis, rather the entire system of support. And often cancer can have lifealtering impact long after treatment is over. Come learn more about the social, emotional, and psychological impact cancer has on individuals, couples, family members, and friends. I will discuss the support offerings Gilda’s Club Twin Cities provides to those navigating the complexities of cancer. Along with suggestions for self-care during cancer and tips to becoming more emotionally available and supportive to others going through cancer. This October 8 Refresh session is open to anyone affected by cancer, in any circumstance, and at any stage—or those simply curious to learn more. There will be time for discussion, reflection and questions. No registration is required. Allison (Ali) DeCamillis, MS, ATR, LPCC, is program director at Gilda’s Club Twin Cities. She is also a licensed professional clinical counselor and art therapist with 18 years of experience specializing in oncology support, grief and loss, and end-of-life with children/teens/adults.

More information to come—for now, save November 12 from 6:30-8 pm on your calendars.

It’s as Easy as 1, 2, 3 by Pastor Chick Lane

We all live busy lives. In the midst of that busyness, this fall’s Lord of Life stewardship program will invite you to give fifteen minutes to our congregation. In that fifteen minutes, you will be encouraged to think about the ministry of Lord of Life and your financial support of that ministry for 2019. Can you get the financial decision makers in your household together for fifteen minutes to talk about Lord of Life? When you do that, you will be asked to walk through a simple process that’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:

$81,901 $72,538

2 3

$65,256 = $292,647 $72,538 = $290,150

Step two will be to have a discussion about your financial support of Lord of Life. You will be asked to determine what you give to Lord of Life now. For many, this will be a very easy step. For others, it may take a little thinking. Then you will use a simple process to consider a modest increase in your giving, based on your household income. Step three will be to use Lord of Life’s website or a simple commitment card to submit your giving decision. In step three you will also be encouraged to consider how you will give—do you want to give electronically, by check, or through a stock transfer.

Three simple steps, all completed in fifteen minutes or less. There will be much more information coming your way in the next six weeks. For now, think about the simple question, “Can you give fifteen minutes to Lord of Life?”

Generosity

1

Step one will be to watch a short video about our congregation, its ministry, and especially, some of our plans for 2019. Lord of Life has an incredible history, a powerful ministry, and some exciting plans for the future. The video will help you learn more.

FreedomWorks Post-prison Aftercare Ministry: The Revolving Door Stops Here—

The Blessings Closet

by Cheryl Myhr Most of us take for granted basic needs in our everyday lives. We have a bed to sleep in with plenty of linens and blankets to keep us warm, clean towels to dry off after a shower, and all the personal toiletries and hygiene items to feel clean and fresh. We have a closet full of clothes to choose from with shoes and coats to spare. Everyone needs these basics so we can go to work or school leading productive lives. Many ex-felons leave prison with the clothes on their backs and very little else. FreedomWorks Post-prison Aftercare Ministry provides these basic necessities for the men entering their program through what we call the Blessings Closet. Through donations from churches like Lord of Life and other faithful supporters, we are able to get the men started with these basic needs for living. As shared in July’s LifeTIMES, FreedomWorks is expanding and preparing their new site at 29th and Emerson in north Minneapolis. Along with that expansion comes the opportunity to expand our vision of the Blessings “Closet” into a full-size Blessings “Room,” an on-site place where residents can get the basic needs to start their new lives: toiletries, personal care items, clothing, bathroom and bedroom needs, and kitchen items at no charge to them. As FreedomWorks expands, we hope to not only serve those going through the FreedomWorks program, but also reach out to others in the neighborhood.

Lord of Life Ministries

If you are interested in supplying items to the Blessings Closet, a list of needs is under “Donate” at lordoflife.org/freedomworks. Please bring donations to Lord of Life’s Service Center. If you are interested in volunteering to help in the Blessings Closet, please contact Cheryl or Greg Myhr (gcmyhr@embarqmail.com) for more details. Thank you for your support!

Christians Reaching Out in Social Service (CROSS)—

Wrapped in God’s Love

by Barb Mewaldt Last fall, a group of women gathered to tie fleece blankets for the CROSS Holiday Toy Shop. Some were novices, others were experts, but it is safe to say that everyone had a good time. Many hands quickly transformed piles of fleece into bright and beautiful blankets. We had so much fun and so much success that we decided to do it again this fall. On Tuesday, October 9, from 9 am to 12 noon, we are looking for volunteers to cut and tie fleece blankets. Everyone is welcome. We can find jobs for all skill levels. Bring a scissors if you have one. If the 9th doesn’t work for you, don’t worry. We will be collecting blankets all fall—right up to December 15. Maybe you work with a scout group, are part of a book club or a Bible study. Tying a fleece blanket is an easy and fun project. Even if you are not the crafty type, you can still help. We need donations of fleece. I have to admit that last year I was a little worried that we would have many volunteers and no fleece. I should have had more faith. So many people gave generously, and we put it all to good use. Each blanket requires four yards of fabric: two yards of a print for the top and two yards of a solid color for the bottom. Donations can be left in the Service Center.

Thanks to the handiwork of Betty Klande and Lorraine Erickson, big sister Lily is able to wrap up brother Luke in a blanket of love.

Offering a fleece blanket to each family that shops at the CROSS Holiday Toy Shop has become somewhat of a tradition. It is a simple act that sends a warm and loving message. We are all wrapped in God’s love. Hope to see you on October 9.

OCTOBER MILESTONE CELEBRATIONS

October is an exciting month for many Lord of Life young people and their families. Two-year-olds begin church school experience with parent/child classes on October 6/7. Third graders (with caring adults) attend a Bible Learning Event before receiving an Adventure Bible the last weekend of the month. In addition, tenth graders are confirmed at four different Affirmation of Baptism services on October 27/28. We rejoice with all of these young people and their families as they experience important milestones in their faith journey.

Deepen Your Faith by Pilgrimage

As you may know, Lord of Life Pastors Joel Wight Hoogheem and Dave McCarty are leading a Holy Land pilgrimage during Lent 2019.
