Deoxyribonucleic Acid Fun by Pastor Karen Geisendorfer-Lindgren

Peter and I recently sent our saliva into Ancestry.com DNA and waited for the results. We had great fun finding out the regions of the world where our ancestors had most likely lived. Peter had been quite certain that he was at least 50% Swedish because he thought his mother was 100% Swedish. Turns out he is 51% Swedish. But his paternal grandfather was adopted, so that side was a little more of a mystery. Peter’s DNA results indicated that he was also 38% Norwegian and the rest British and Finnish. When I looked at my results I was a bit surprised. I always thought I was 75% Norwegian and 25% German, but my DNA showed that my German heritage—actually listed as Northwest European, was only 10% (kind of a shock for a Geisendorfer) and the rest was Scandinavian: 73% Norwegian and 17% SWEDISH! When I told my sister about the surprise Swedish connection, she said that we were now going to have to start eating white sauce on our lutefisk along with the butter. I also found out that my cousins, who had taken the test, were indeed my first cousins. Their familiar names made me smile when I was reading my results. Discovering information about our recent ancestry can be fun, but what is really salient to note is that if we could go back far enough we’d see that all of the people alive today share common ancestors. The human race is indeed one big family. If we really embrace that reality, it can impact the way we treat one another . . . how we treat not only those who are similar to us, but those who seem quite different, those who are from a more distant branch of our family tree. In the very first chapter of the first book of the Bible (Genesis 1:27), we are told that God our creator, created all of us. We were all made in God’s image—male and female—and we are all part of God’s family. We all share in God’s DNA. And it is God’s great desire that we love one another—that we love our other family members—as we love ourselves. And so, if you are like me and are enjoying learning more about what your DNA can tell you about your recent ancestry, I invite you to keep in mind that your whole family includes every one of God’s precious children. May God bless all of our brothers and sisters!

Summer Worship Series—

Holy Questions!

?

?

On any given day, we ask, are asked, and answer many questions. What will I eat? Where will I go? Who will I be? What difference will this day make? The list could go on and on, and range from the simple and practical all the way to the deep and meaningful. But how often do we ask questions of our faith and faith practices? Do we take the time to think about what we believe and why we believe it? This past September, in one of Pastor Kaitlyn’s sermons, she encouraged the spiritual practice of asking questions of faith and offering them to God. There was space to reflect, write, and place them in the offering plate. What we found were a collection of deeply faithful ponderings, honest vulnerability, and musings of the heart. They were so insightful, that we decided to take them on this summer and offer reflections and responses. In our summer worship series, Holy Questions, from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend; we’re going to provide a perspective on some questions that you have asked, like: •

How do we know that God is real?

•

Why do we argue with one another?

•

Why do bad things happen?

•

What does having “enough” look like?

We look forward to seeing you this summer!

summer

learning

These, among many more, will shape our worship experience and invite you to figure out where your answers lie and deepen your faith. We invite you to allow your minds to be stirred as we wrestle with the hard and holy, unknown and known, and how God continues to show up in the world today.

Summer Bible Study by Pastor Donna Rohrer

Join me this summer on Monday nights as we watch and discuss a PBS video: Ancient Roads from Christ to Constantine narrated by Historian Jonathan Phillips. We will travel to the Holy Land and other historical places of early Christianity. We will see where Christ traveled and then where his followers went to spread the Good News. Phillips will take us through seven countries in Africa and Europe and the Middle East. The Christian faith triumphed against all odds and is still going strong today. We will meet Monday nights in June and July beginning June 3. The time is 6-6:50pm. We will finish in time to go to summer worship outdoors at 7pm. See you then!

Connect Life, May 7, 7pm, OMNI Brewing—

Is Sabbath Obsolete?

Rotary telephones are a thing of the past. There’s only one Blockbuster Video left on the face of the planet. Women are no longer expected to wear hats and men are no longer expected to wear neckties in worship. All these things that used to be taken for granted are now obsolete. They no longer serve a purpose and, therefore, have faded away. The world is a vastly different place now than it was when God instituted the Sabbath. We have things like electricity and the internet and soccer clubs. So, has the world passed the Sabbath by? Should it be relegated to the dustbin of history along with Woolworth’s, typewriters, and Betamax? Or is there something enduring about the Sabbath? Could it still be a gift from God to us today? And if so, how can we practice Sabbath and enjoy the freedom it can bring? Pastor Joel will guest host this month’s Connect Life as we talk about the Sabbath and whether or not it still has a place in today’s 24/7/365 world.

Men’s Retreat

I

by Chris Tollefson

remember my first men’s retreat. I was nervous as I hardly knew anyone at church at that time. I remember driving into the retreat center parking lot and seeing all of these men that I didn’t know and thought, what have I gotten myself into? As I got myself settled in, I was greeted by many guys and made to feel welcome and my nerves were starting to ease.

retirement, on and on. That weekend we had wonderful moments together, either on the golf course or in our times together of large or small groups. We ate together, played together, and prayed together. That first retreat has helped me to get involved in numerous men’s activities throughout the years including helping to develop and grow Lord of Life’s men’s ministry.

Although I was still anxious as to what the weekend would bring, fast forward some 15 years or so later and here I am writing to you about why you should come on this retreat!

The annual men’s retreat is coming up May 17-19 at Shores of St. Andrew Bible camp. The weekend is filled with activities such as golf, biking, hiking, cards, talking, devotional time, large and small group. This is a great weekend to develop relationships with men, learn about Christ and have fun. This year we are excited to have author Vince Miller joining us for the weekend. Vince will be involved in our topics for evening large and small group time together. I highly encourage you to attend this weekend, it changed my life and I am sure it will change yours.

The relationships that I developed that weekend have been lasting and will last my entire life. These relationships have helped me to get closer to other men and more importantly, closer to Christ. So, what happened on that weekend? I met other men who had the same daily struggles that I had: balancing my work and home life, raising children, money, planning for

You may volunteer for this time to serve whenever you are available. Those who wish to donate food but cannot attend may bring your donation to the church. Your food will be picked up and brought to Hope Lodge by the volunteers who are scheduled to serve that evening. You are encouraged to participate and make a difference in people’s lives at Hope Lodge. Carpooling is provided for those who need transportation. How Do You Like to Give? by Pastor Chick Lane congregation’s ministry as easy as possible. Often when we think about giving to a church, the questions are “How much should I give?” or “Why do I give?” Several members of our staff have been thinking together about a different question, “How do I give?,” or more accurately, “How do members of Lord of Life want to give?”

put their offering in the plate on Sunday morning, and it was either cash or a check. These were usually in an offering envelope the church provided. Times have changed. Our staff group recently made a list of ways we currently have available for people to give, and ways we want to have available in the near future. There were 12 ways of giving on the list. If we had taken more time, I’m sure the list would have grown. There are two important points in all of this for you, a financial supporter of the ministry of Lord of Life. First, in the next few months the congregation will be rolling out some new ways you can use to give to Lord of Life. These may not appeal to you at all. That’s fine, keep doing what you’ve been doing and what works for you. On the other hand, one of these new ways of giving may be just what you’d like to use. Fantastic. Be an early adopter and try out a new way of giving. Second, if there is a way you would like to give to Lord of Life that isn’t available, or that you are having trouble using, please let me know. The only bad prayer is the one not prayed . . . sometimes with prayer we just need a springboard to get us started and keep us on track. Try using the acrostic PRAY. Start your prayers with praising and thanking the Lord. Move from there into a time of repenting, naming your sins. Then, offer prayers for another. These prayers can include both personal family or friends to others in the community, nation, the world. Finally, let the Lord know what is on your heart, naming your personal prayers. Then, just sit quietly for a few minutes and listen. Prayer is a conversation between you and God. He is delighted when you come to him with everything, the good and the bad.

P - praise and thanksgiving R - repent of our sins A - another, offer prayers on behalf of others Y - yourself, offer your own prayers or petitions

Serving in Jamaica We had a wonderful team this year who enjoyed working, worshipping, and just hanging out with each other. In addition to the usual duties with the children—we dug a hole, installed a septic tank, and built its drain field. We also completed a Ja’bode house project, a Jamaican version of Habitat for Humanity. It was funded by Lord of Life and completed in four days for one of the housemothers at Westhaven. Enjoy these excerpts from our team’s daily blog (lordoflife.org/jamaicablog). —Phil Leith One highlight was re-kindling old connections with many of the children and housemothers. We sang, danced, played, painted fingernails, and had lunch with them. We certainly saw God at work today in the faces and lives of the people we are serving and learning so much from. —Lynn, Nathan, and Danielle Key After breakfast, bathing, teeth brushing, and dressing happens among smiles and laughter. The Ja’bode team got a big assist today from the Westhaven team which sped up the filling of the foundation and kept the project on schedule. Our hope is that we create more than just a house, but a home, a safe place to live for a staff member at Westhaven. —Tim, Maryl, Bret, and Kelly Jordahl This was my first time in Jamaica, I was able to see the excitement in the children at Westhaven and with members of the mission team reuniting with the kids. They have a way of touching your heart and letting you feel welcome. In their smiles, hugs, laughter, and singing, I was able to see the love of God. —Linda Jenneke The goal of building a house in just a few days was accomplished. Housemother Laverne was given the keys to the house, as well as a housewarming gift. The gift consisted of new dishes, glasses/dishtowels, and a Bible. A Jamaican mentioned the Bible was the most important gift. Laverne was emotional considering this life-changing event. —Mark, Roxanne, and Caleb Robinson

Awestruck by God’s perfect timing to allow the group, while walking back to the orphanage, to save a baby who was choking. We helped to save a life! Inspired by the kids at WestHaven: their smiles, joy, and worship of the Lord. When we finished our time in Jamaica, we wanted to reflect on how the trip started: “God has given each of you a gift. Use them well to serve one another.” 1 Peter 4:10 —Rob and Nancy Van Beusekom

Fill the Truck Day by Barb Mewaldt

On my kitchen calendar I have a big red circle around the date, June 2. No—it is not Father’s Day, Flag Day, or even the last day of school. It is “Fill the Truck Day” at Lord of Life. On Sunday, June 2, Lord of Life will hold a one day, “Fill the Truck” food drive for CROSS. On that morning, from 8am-12:30pm, the CROSS truck will be at Lord of Life, as we attempt to fill it with food donations. There is food insecurity in Maple Grove. It is often out of sight, but it is a genuine problem. Every year more families depend on CROSS to supplement food budgets that do not stretch to the end of the month. Doubly discouraging is the fact that as need has increased, donations have decreased. Overall, donations to CROSS are down 40 percent over the past year. We picked June 2 as the date for the one-day food drive to highlight increased food shelf usage when school is not in session. At Lord of Life, we provide weekend food support for 170 students. That is just for two schools. These children don’t get school-provided breakfast and lunch during the summer months, and as a result many families struggle with increased food costs. Is this a big challenge? It certainly is. The CROSS truck can hold about 2800 pounds of food. Can we do it? I believe we can. When I said that donations to CROSS were down, I was not referring to Lord of Life. I am grateful for all the support that Lord of Life has shown to CROSS over the past several years. It is precisely because of this past support that I believe we can meet this present challenge. There is power in numbers. If everyone does a little, no one has to do a lot. My personal strategy will be to pick up one or two non-perishable food items every time I do my grocery shopping. I doubt that I will even notice the difference in my final bill. I will set these items aside, and bring them to church on June 2. So circle June 2 on your calendar. Watch for more information as the days count down. Spread the word. If you want to volunteer, we can use help loading food onto the truck. To sign up as a volunteer, visit lordoflife.org/cross. Thank you for all you have done, and for all you continue to do for CROSS.

New Divorce Group

Divorce is a process, not an event. Are you recently separated from your spouse, in the process of a divorce or are you a divorcée or divorcé who finds being single a hard thing to do in a “couple’s world?” It can be a lonely, scary, and frustrating time in a person’s life no matter what stage you are facing. This new support group will help to ease the transition and provide support, love, and friendship in this new chapter in your life. This group will meet the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 7-8pm, beginning May 9. Childcare will be provided. The second Thursday of the month will give everyone a chance to meet others in the group, hear their stories, share resources, give support, and build friendships. The fourth Thursday will focus on a specific topic related to divorce such as: loneliness, anger, forgiveness, finances, and more. Groups will be gender specific. Depending on interest, periodic events around the community may be planned. Questions? Contact Kristi Kalinsky at kristikalinsky326@gmail.com or Michelle Tomlinson at michellet@lordoflife.org.

Summer Camp

by Kelly Rodger The experience of going to camp is difficult to describe. One really needs to be immersed in the beauty of nature, the connectedness of new and developing friendships, and the energy sparked by fun and fantastic counselors leading games and faith activities. To truly understand how impactful it can be, you’d need to spend a few days or a week absorbed in one’s faith journey. My own first summer camp adventure was “Intro to Camp.” It was a shorter trip, similar to Lord of Life’s Half-Pint camp where participants have the chance to try a couple nights away from home and see what fun it can be. By the time I returned home, I was already asking to go back the next week. I felt such a sense of independence! The long-lasting memories made, with friends I would not have otherwise met, were far more meaningful than any other summer experience I had as a child. Camp became an annual tradition carried on into my early adult life. Spending six summers as one of those fun and fantastic leaders, I truly hoped every child went home feeling the same exhilarating transformation I had experienced. In today’s culture of technology, texting, and social media and Snapchat, it is remarkable to see how youth truly bloom when given the opportunity to unplug—developing human connections that we so desperately need—spending time interacting with God’s creation. The children/youth who go to Shores of St. Andrew this summer will learn about God’s love, spend time swimming, playing games and soaking in the sunshine, all while learning new skills and making lasting friendships. I asked a few campers who went to ‘Shores’ of St. Andrew last summer what they liked and here’s what they had to say! Chakylin: I like the Finn: Everything! The canteen relationships you build with is the best, and the meals are the people you meet. also great. The bunk beds are cool, and hanging out with friends in the cabin is fun. Will: The evening whole camp games are so fun!

Ellie: The lake is great, super clean, and the beaches are not rocky. I also enjoyed the craft shack because I got to make bracelets with my friends.
