In our bountiful Midwest, the majority of family tables will be filled with heaping plates of delicious food later this month. Yet the reality is many in our global village are starving— particularly children. Long-time Lord of Life members Denny & LaVerne Kinvig share their story of reflections with thankfulness for Lord of Life in supporting Mission Jamaica, Adopt-an-Orphanage, and Feed My Starving Children (FMSC).

e love this time of year when the holidays approach, especially Thanksgiving! It is such a wonderful celebration to gratefully reflect on our family, friends, and at the foundation of it all—our faith. I know we’re not the only ones during this holiday who acknowledge and thank God for many gifts given, among them the blessing of belonging to the Lord of Life family. Charity begins at home when you’re in the LIVECHRIST moment. May we share a few reflections with thankfulness to everyone who has volunteered and packed a meal, who have given an offering of financial support, and particularly those who have lifted up their prayers for these ministries. Between the two of us we’ve experienced nine mission trips to Jamaica. We were hooked on serving the children of Jamaica at Westhaven Orphanage and Clifton Boys’ Home while at the same time receiving a few days of rest and relaxation in that beautiful country. From these Jamaican experiences, Lord of Life connected with the local ministry of Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). FMSC was founded in 1987 and is now the largest supplier of nutritionally complete, packaged dry meals for the world’s hungry. They are the original! Lord of Life has had wonderful ties with them since January 1997; their first interim director was ‘our own’ Lord of Lifer Diane Eaton. Since that time past board members have included me (Denny) and Rick Palmer. Currently there are other Lord of Lifers serving within FMSC: Tom Brady on the board of directors, Gwendolyn Cowle as their marketing director, and Jeff Peterson as construction liaison for several makeovers and moves. Lord of Life supported their first orphanage at Bald Hill in the Ukraine from 1997-99. In 1999, the need for food was so great that the entire crate of FMSC food being delivered to the orphanage was hijacked —continues on Page 10

A Psalm of Thanksgiving

salm 100 provides us with a blueprint for how we might celebrate Thanksgiving later this month. From the New Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible, here is how Verse 1 in the text begins:

come into His presence with singing. A Hebrew word for worship, abad, means to orient your entire life and existence to God. So at the very least you could go to church on Thanksgiving Eve at 7 pm or spend some time in prayer before carving the turkey. And not out of guilt or obligation or fear, but worship with the gladness that comes from knowing the grace and love of God. 3

it is He that made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. God is God and we are not. God made us—we didn’t make ourselves. We belong to Him and He will take care of us. Alex Haley, the author of “Roots,” had an unusual picture hanging in his office. It was a picture of a turtle on top of a fence post. When asked, “Why is that there?” Haley would answer, “Every time I write something significant, every time I read my words and think that they are wonderful, and begin to feel proud of myself, I look at the turtle on top of the fence post and remember that he didn’t get there on his own. He had help.” That is the basis of thanksgiving—to remember that we got here with the help of God, and that He is the provider of every blessing we have. 4

Advent Devotions

he word Advent means coming—Christ’s coming to earth as a baby for us, His coming in the believer’s heart today, and His coming again in power and great glory. Our preparations for Christ’s coming may be enriched when we gather around an Advent wreath for family devotions. Devotions focus attentions on our relationship with God. Each candle on the wreath is intended to signify a particular aspect of that relationship.

There seems to be no universal tradition for the color or names of the candles. Some use purple, pink, red, white, or blue. Some call the candles prophecy, Bethlehem, shepherds, angels, history, new birth, second coming, faith, peace, joy, or more! But we do know that candles more and more have come to symbolize Christ as the Light of the world. Here are simple Advent devotions you may wish to use this year:

first sunday of advent, november 27 Light the first candle, the candle of promise. Long ago the prophet Isaiah spoke these words of promise about Jesus to God’s people. Read Isaiah 9:6 Sing the first verse of “Joy to the World!” Pray: Dear heavenly Father, as we begin the Advent season, teach us the true meaning of Christmas. Each time we light the candle of promise, help us to think about your promise to send Jesus your Son. Amen. Talk about the promises we make to each other and the promises God makes to us.

second sunday of advent, december 4 Light the first candle (promise) and the second candle, the candle of light. The candle of light reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the world. Read John 1:1-8 Sing the first verse of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” Pray: Dear Father in heaven, you gave us Jesus as the light for all people. May Jesus’ light shine in our darkness as we gather around our Advent wreath and as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior. Amen. Talk about the darkness in your life and how Jesus brings the light.

The candle of hope reminds us that God gave us the gift of hope—life forever with Him. Read John 14:3 Sing the first verse of “What Child Is This?” Pray: Dear Father in heaven, we worship baby Jesus, born in a stable, and we rejoice that He loved us and became our Savior. Now we are hoping for what we have never seen—life forever with Jesus, our King. Amen. Talk about the hope we have that Jesus has prepared a place for us so we can live with Him forever.

christmas eve/christmas day, december 24/25 Light the candles of promise, light, love, and hope. Add a white, pillar candle as the Christ candle. For four weeks the candles have been burning as we thought about God’s promises to us, about the light His coming brings to us, about His love for us, and about our hope in Him. We have been thinking of God’s gift to us—Jesus, our Savior. We have been getting our hearts ready for Christmas. Read Luke 2:1-20 Sing the first verse of “Silent Night” Pray: Dear God, thank you for the special times we have spent together this Advent as we learned more about your precious gift to us— Jesus, our Savior. Amen. Talk about what Christmas means to you.

The Uniqueness of Grief

Because that grief, won’t go away, Learn to let it have its way. The link to love, a precious one, Is met with grief and still not done. The days do come, and nights do go, Grief will stay as time is so. And so a loved one passes on, And grief comes in and carries on. Does grief get better, I will ask, It’s hard to say, while at its task. There is grief to help us cope, There is God to give us hope. Grief will surely go away, On that glorious heaven’s day. But while it’s here, there’s just one thing, Pray our Lord, for peace He’ll bring.

ach of us experiences grief in our own individual way. There is no right or wrong way to journey through this time. In grieving, there are so many variables making it important to walk the path with no pressure to be a certain way. Going through grief—and not around it or trying to avoid it—brings healing. The poem at left acknowledges grief ’s existence and hope in coping. GriefShare is a safe place to just be where you are on this journey. I would like to personally invite you to Fellowship Hall every Tuesday evening to travel the road together. You are welcome for dinner at 6-6:30 pm with our Celebrate Recovery friends and/or meet with the GriefShare small group from 7-8:30 pm. stewardship faqs Here are some frequently asked questions about stewardship: What is this stewardship emphasis for? Every year, Lord of Life’s congregational council prepares the budget for the upcoming year of ministry. This emphasis is for the 2012 program year: January 1 through December 31, 2012.

As a congregation, we have been blessed beyond all measures. We have performed 134 baptisms so far this year, while continuing to experience large numbers of people enjoying fellowship and service together at our OWLs (Older Wiser Lutherans) events. The 7th grade C3 (Confirmation) group of 190 young people is the largest class we have ever had. And people are truly engaged in this year’s Gospel of John study, whether it’s through personal study and reflection on the weekly sermons, or through more formal engagement in a small group or Adult Bible Study. Plus the building expansion is progressing quickly. The excitement for new ministry opportunities grows as the walls go up! All of these blessings mean we need your pledges to continue serving the needs of those around us. As you prayerfully consider what to give for your 2012 pledge, please keep in mind all that your offerings make possible: • • • • •

It’s Time for Good $ense!

s shared in last month’s LifeTIMES, the Good $ense course can change hearts and lives in the area of finances. Good $ense goals are for you to commit to and begin developing a biblically-based spending plan. Good $ense will provide you with the principles, practical steps and training to help make that happen. The course is confidential; no personal information will be shared. The next Good $ense training is on Saturday, November 12 and Saturday, November 19. Both days are required for the training from 8:30 am-12:30 pm. Cost is $25 per person, or $35 per couple. and sold on the black market. We learned from that experience. Through the Holy Spirit, the opportunity arrived for Lord of Life to start a circle of life to Jamaica. With Adoptan-Orphanage and Lord of Life’s benevolence committee, money is provided for the food and a shipment container. Jeff Peterson, Lord of Lifer and Director of Mission Jamaica located out of St. Andrew’s Lutheran in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, takes care of the tough Jamaican custom details and secures a safe site to store the container until Lord of Life’s missionaries personally deliver the food packets. Then they even feed the hot meal to the children and return to Lord of Life to share the stories of their experiences. The circle is truly complete! We pay for, pack and prepare the food, ship it, and serve it directly to those in need. And do you know the shipping container can be recycled once it is emptied of food? Several of the shipping containers have remained in Jamaica to become offices, computer labs, kitchen and storage

containers at several of the Mission Jamaica sites. What makes FMSC work so well is that all different levels of Lord of Lifers can participate! You can now go online to schedule convenient packing time(s). You can take a small group of OWLs, Word for Women, or classes of confirmation students. You can celebrate a holiday or a birthday. Our granddaughter, Emere Peterson, was the first child to have had a birthday party [at the former site in Brooklyn Park] giving FMSC the idea to start fun, small group gatherings. Now each year they have more than 525,000 volunteers from families, churches, businesses, and civic groups pack meals at one of FMSC’s permanent sites or MobilePack™ events around the U.S. Working as teams in two-hour shifts, volunteers fill and seal bags of food, enjoy a fun atmosphere and the satisfaction of making a measurable impact on hunger. Volunteers and other donors pay for 100% of FMSC meals; FMSC receives no government aid. With each meal costing less than 25 cents, donations of any amount make a big difference! Countless faithful volunteers have packed this ‘Minnesota hotdish’ composed of rice for energy, soy protein for growth, vitamins, minerals and dehydrated vegetables for flavor. Countless faithful donors have paid for the packets— one bag feeds six

children. The cost to feed 200 children one hot meal for one day is only $35. FMSC is a Christian non-profit committed to feeding God’s children, hungry both in body and spirit. The approach is simple. Volunteers handpack meals specially formulated for malnourished children. Today there are three formulas which provide complete, nutritious food for a child to grow and thrive in any culture. Food scientists developed an all-vegetarian MannaPack™ Rice meal to quickly reverse and prevent malnutrition. They’ve also recently introduced two groundbreaking formulas: MannaPack Potato-D, the relief world’s only food to manage diarrhea, a leading killer worldwide; and Manna Pack Potato-W, a weaning formula that meets World Health Organizations guidelines for toddlers at the high-risk age of 7-12 months. ord of Life’s mission to the Dominican Republic is just around the corner and your application is needed NOW. We have partnered with churches and communities to build and support schools, medical clinics, dental clinics, water systems, septic systems, vocational training, women’s co-ops, and more. January will be the third year that Lord of Life missionaries have provided hands-on help alongside the local church to construct a community center, build gardens, and provide dental services. The team will be active and extremely busy doing a variety of activities and services and your help is needed. Some of the things you will do on the mission trip include: •

n Thursday, September 15, there were 22 OWLs who boarded the bus for travel to Jordan, Minnesota. The song “Oh What A Beautiful Morning” comes to mind for this trip! The first stop was at the OK Corral for a delicious lunch of chicken or beef brisket. After lunch we were greeted by the town sheriff who escorted us to Cedar Ridge Arabian Horse Farm for a tour. While at Cedar Ridge we learned about the breeding, birthing and training of Arabian horses. We even had a chance to see some of the beautiful grand champion horses and some mares with their foals. After the tour we had time to stop at Jim’s Apple Barn to do a little shopping before our trip back to Maple Grove. The OWLs arrived home a little WISER from our tour of Cedar Ridge Arabian Horse Farm...and ask one of us about Mable!

he Richard M. Schulze Family American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® offers private rooms for the comfort of guests undergoing cancer treatment. Fostering a home-like environment, Hope Lodge is equipped with a community dining room, kitchen, family room, library and laundry facilities. It also offers guests a wide variety of cancer programs and services providing information, resources and support to ease their cancer journey.

Joy of Giving

Lord of Life has been providing a home-cooked meal at Hope Lodge every other Monday night since February 2011. A typical team is 8-10 volunteers; so far over 60 volunteers have prepared and served meals. Lord of Life’s service goes beyond merely satisfying their appetite—it also nourishes souls through prayer and prayer shawls. Together these volunteers paint a bold picture of God’s love and

hope. It is a wonderful evening of food, fellowship, prayer and fun—yes, fun! During the upcoming holiday season, when most families are coming together, these families will be separated by many miles while a loved one undergoes treatment. It can be a lonely time perhaps made even lonelier by the stress of treatment and recovery. Lord of Life has a bold plan to reach out and serve dinner on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and every night in between. That’s right, every dinner during the upcoming holiday season! God has provided us with a great opportunity to serve right here at home. Now it is up to us to step forward and make sure His will be done. A leadership team has been assembled to coordinate volunteers; we are looking for nightly leaders to coordinate each meal team of 8-10 volunteers (there is no minimum age for volunteers if accompanied by an adult) to prepare and serve the meal then offer fellowship with guests. You could prepare most of the meal ahead of time at home. Talk to your family, small group members, neighbors & friends and invite them to join you in this exciting opportunity.

To Serve and Support and Honor by John and Lucy Rodvik

ord of Life’s Military Family Support Ministry is a ministry that allows us to serve and support military members and their families during this time of war. Although most in our ministry have direct ties to the military, many members do not have a direct tie but do have desire to serve. All are welcome to join us for the monthly meeting on the last Monday of the month, November 28 from 6:30-8 pm. Each monthly meeting starts out with a potluck, and of course, lots of fellowship!

What is a God moment? Some in the secular world may say things just seem to happen as an uncanny coincidence or chalk it up to fate. Yet for Christians we acknowledge and recognize the presence of a living God who loves us and orchestrates sometimes even the smallest moments in our lives. Maybe you’ve heard someone say, “It was a God moment!”

Through this ministry we have served soldiers both overseas and locally. And we are always on the hunt for ways we can help! The following examples are ways we have been able to serve: •

Lord of Life sent over one thousand pounds worth of supplies to combat support hospitals in both Iraq and Afghanistan

We have sent dozens of Christmas care packages to soldiers who had been identified as someone who does not typically receive many packages

•

Donated gasoline giftcards have been given to family members driving hundreds of miles each week to the VA hospital in St. Cloud

•

Provided lots of handyman services to help around the house while a soldier is deployed

A God moment can take many forms and often when we least expect it. Whether it be a moment of blessing or healing, a moment of directing our path or receiving a helping hand, a moment giving us inner peace or a way out of a difficult situation—they can be so amazing that you simply have to share the experience with others.

Provided the VA’s Poly Trauma Unit the necessary equipment to conduct yoga classes for soldiers being treated for massive head injuries

•

Donated five laptop computers to local soldiers for Iraqi deployment

•

Financial support to military families during Christmas

•

And of course, prayer and plenty of ears to listen!

huge thank you to all the wonderful volunteers, clothing donors, and Lord of Life’s support staff for a roaring success at the LSS Children’s Clothing Sale on October 1. Almost 90 clients, with about 400 children, shopped and selected multiple outfits for their children at a minimal price. The clothing donated by Lord of Life and Mount Olivet families was lovely. The shoppers were delighted with their purchases! Any clothing that was not purchased was donated to LSS Refugee Services, to be given to immigrants as they arrive to make their new home in Minnesota. This successful sale could not have been done without your help! Thank you for your service to the community.

Faith Formation

earning in fellowship with others may be extremely rewarding for your faith formation. As you know from previous issues of LifeTIMES and weekly worship sermons, Lord of Life is studying the Gospel of John through June 2012. You are encouraged to participate in the study by joining an adult ministry small group to grow your faith and to build relationships within your church family. For other learning styles, perhaps a self-study offering would be preferred—at your own time, on your own pace, and in your own setting by following weekly lesson plans. More detailed information, including the schedule of small groups, topics, and study materials, is found at lordoflife.org/allchurchstudy. And a third option for your faith formation is attending “Go Deeper with Pastor David!” These studies are on Monday evenings from 7:20-9 pm or Sunday morning at 9:45 am. The format includes prayer and praise, discussion, and a large group lecture. Pastor David digs deeper into the Gospel of John offering special insight and teachings. As an example of Pastor David’s instruction, below is a sampling of six out of nineteen statements from an introductory worksheet. Go ahead, get out your study Bible, and fill in the blanks!

On Thursday, September 8, leaving behind the noise of construction work at church, the Older Wiser Lutherans (OWLs) traveled by bus to Rose Arbor Assisted Living Residence of Maple Grove. They spent the afternoon enjoying good fellowship, coffee and treats along with exercising their ‘skills’ at the game of bingo with residents. And then it’s “Turkey Time!” We’ll be a wobbling and gobbling to prepare a Thanksgiving celebration. From pumpkin dough to placemats to Chapel Chat, we’ll be learning about expressing gratitude. The grand finale will be our very own Thanksgiving Feast with all the trimmings—yum, yum!
