In our bountiful Midwest, the majority of family tables will be filled with heaping plates of delicious food later this month. Yet the reality is many in our global village are starving— particularly children. Long-time Lord of Life members Denny & LaVerne Kinvig share their story of reflections with thankfulness for Lord of Life in supporting Mission Jamaica, Adopt-an-Orphanage, and Feed My Starving Children (FMSC).

W

e love this time of year when the holidays approach, especially Thanksgiving! It is such a wonderful celebration to gratefully reflect on our family, friends, and at the foundation of it all—our faith. I know we’re not the only ones during this holiday who acknowledge and thank God for many gifts given, among them the blessing of belonging to the Lord of Life family. Charity begins at home when you’re in the LIVECHRIST moment. May we share a few reflections with thankfulness to everyone who has volunteered and packed a meal, who have given an offering of financial support, and particularly those who have lifted up their prayers for these ministries. Between the two of us we’ve experienced nine mission trips to Jamaica. We were hooked on serving the children of Jamaica at Westhaven Orphanage and Clifton Boys’ Home while at the same time receiving a few days of rest and relaxation in that beautiful country. From these Jamaican experiences, Lord of Life connected with the local ministry of Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). FMSC was founded in 1987 and is now the largest supplier of nutritionally complete, packaged dry meals for the world’s hungry. They are the original! Lord of Life has had wonderful ties with them since January 1997; their first interim director was ‘our own’ Lord of Lifer Diane Eaton. Since that time past board members have included me (Denny) and Rick Palmer. Currently there are other Lord of Lifers serving within FMSC: Tom Brady on the board of directors, Gwendolyn Cowle as their marketing director, and Jeff Peterson as construction liaison for several makeovers and moves. Lord of Life supported their first orphanage at Bald Hill in the Ukraine from 1997-99. In 1999, the need for food was so great that the entire crate of FMSC food being delivered to the orphanage was hijacked —continues on Page 10
