Every Step of the Way
by Pastor Karen Greimel Grief is part of life. Grief comes in many shapes and sizes. Grief feels sad. We grieve the loss of a loved one; we grieve the loss of a job, a marriage, moving, friendship, a pet, a teacher, youth. This list only scratches the surface of the types of loss. Loss invites us into a relationship with grief. No one wants to be in a relationship with grief. I have heard it said “time heals all wounds.” I would disagree with that. Time helps us adjust to wounds; God heals them. Recently as a staff and congregation we experienced the death of Lee Fuchs, choir director for 28 years, and then only weeks later, the unexpected death of Debbie Zaic, administrative assistant for almost 17 years. We were stunned. We met grief face to face. Stacy Allen, from Healthwise Behavioral Health & Wellness, worked with the Lord of Life staff and congregation to navigate our grief. She shared “The Grief Wheel” shown below, created by Dr. Shelly Gilbert.1 As we grieve, we start in the dark center and move through the emotions of sadness, shock, disbelief, anger, happiness, denial, fear, guilt, and many more in no special order. We can and do move in and out of any one of these emotions a number of times as we move toward the outside. This gives permission to revisit any one of the emotions as we continue to adjust. We all experience grief differently, but one thing remains—the same God is right there with us every step of the way.
and are always ready to help. The helpless commit themselves to you; you have always helped the needy. Psalm 10:14 Good News Translation (GNT)

what is prayer
Prayer is a direct line for communicating with God, who wants to connect with us. For some, prayer may seem awkward at first or complicated—but it is simply talking to God—and it’s easy to talk with someone if you know you are loved unconditionally. Give all your worries and cares to God, who cares about what happens to you. 1 Peter 5:7 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it. Hebrews 4:16 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Pray. Knowing that no matter how remote a journey, a connection with God can never be lost. And roaming rates do not apply.
pause for prayer
Prayers of praise. Prayers of grief. Prayers of thanksgiving. You are encouraged to ‘take a pause for prayer’ lifting up those named on these pages. As believers, we stand on faith that all prayers are heard. You are also encouraged to subscribe to Lord of Life’s email prayer network: prayernetwork@lordoflife.org. May God bless all according to their needs. Amen.

Favorites What’s your favorite Bible verse? What inspires you in the Bible? What gives you hope? What lets you know who God is? Each week in worship this summer, the pastors will be sharing their favorite Bible verses. Each sermon will offer their answers to these sorts of questions. All summer long, you’ll get to hear some of your favorites and you may discover a few new
favorites, too. It’s a great chance to be reminded about just what an incredible God we have. You will be comforted in the promises of salvation through Christ, challenged by the words of the prophets, and grounded in the amazing grace of God. —Pastor Joel Wight Hoogheem
Deric Craig:
Summer Study:
After serving an interim period, Deric Craig is now fully on board as Lord of Life’s Canticle Choir Director. Asking What does music mean to you?, he replied, “Everything. It is where I find that God speaks to me. I can’t remember a time I wasn’t in music.” Deric continued, “I have been in choir and band from elementary school on through today.”
Beginning June 4 at 6 pm, join in a Bible study about the first book of the New Testament, continuing on Mondays through June and July. With summer worship at 7 pm—we will finish on time if you want to worship after class.
it’s official
Many will recognize Deric’s smooth baritone voice, although he can also sing from low bass to alto (in falsetto). He has served as bass section leader as well as a cantor during special worship services. He has been a professional church musician for 34 years— even as a cantor for Jewish high holy days. He earned a bachelor’s in vocal performance and two master’s in music: voice and choral conducting.
Favorites
He admits to “playing the piano enough to embarrass myself ” as well as saxophone, clarinet, flute—even bagpipes! Deric taught college choir/voice/music theory and has directed barbershop choruses, children’s choirs, and handbell choirs.
6 June 2018
Deric is married to Dana Craig, Lord of Life’s Worship Coordinator/Director of Children’s Music. Together they have five amazing kids: Victoria, Colin, Anna, Olivia, and Gillian. Deric admits they are never bored. ;)
the gospel of matthew
Matthew starts with Jesus’ genealogy. With all of the interest in this subject today, come and see why it’s so important to understand the opening verses. And I have a fun way to avoid all the names we can’t pronounce and have never heard of! A video, A New Identity with Michael Card, will introduce us to the Holy Land showing places where Jesus walked. We will learn other things to help understand what times were like in the world when Jesus gathered the disciples and began his ministry. If you cannot attend every week, that’s ok. You can keep up with readings listed in a handout to get the most out of your Bible study. Summer—it finally seems to be here! —Pastor Donna Rohrer
l’ambrizioso On June 17 at 7 pm, L’Ambrizioso, Italian for the ambitious, will perform a concert in the sanctuary. The group is comprised of the two Drevlow brothers, who perform virtuosic arrangements of songs familiar and new on string bass and piano. They are the world’s only touring bass and piano duet and love to discuss with the audience their art and their tour. They are still in college so truly are the ambitious.
First in a series of four articles—
Faithful Living
by Pastor Chick Lane Mark Allan Powell teaches New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. Mark and I have known each other for over a decade, and now serve together on the board of the Stewardship of Life Institute. Mark’s book, Giving to God, is excellent. In a chapter Faithful Living, he asserts that God cares how we acquire, regard, manage, and spend money. This creates the acronym ARMS. Over the next four months, I’m going to write a series on these four words, offering my take on Dr. Powell’s work. When we think of financial stewardship, we often think only of what we give away. The clear message of the Bible is God cares about every aspect of your life with money, including how you acquire money. First, God cares that you acquire money in an honest way, and don’t victimize other people in your quest for financial gain. The Bible has much to say about not being dishonest in business practices. Rigged scales that short-change a customer are forbidden. Charging interest to fellow Israelites is outlawed, as is charging exorbitant interest to anyone. So is taking advantage of the poor because of unequal power and influence. Business practices have changed a lot since Biblical times, but the basic laws remain. Taking advantage of someone in business just because you can get away with it is not a God-pleasing activity. Doing shoddy work because you won’t get caught is not what God has in mind. Second, God wants you to know that honest labor is a God-pleasing activity. Martin Luther understood this perhaps better than anyone else. Luther taught that all labor is serving God. Dr. Powell uses a quote (p. 85) often attributed to Luther, “The maid who sweeps her kitchen is doing the will of God just as much as the monk who prays—not Budget Year-to-date — April 2018 because she may sing a Christian hymn as she sweeps, but because Actual Budget Difference God loves clean floors.” God cares how you acquire money. This is part of what it means to be a Christian steward. I invite you to think of your own way of acquiring money. How is your acquisition of money God-pleasing? Is there any part of your way of acquiring money you would prefer God doesn’t know about?

Hamel Rodeo
Military Family Support Ministry (MFSM) and Lord of Life’s men’s ministry, 2B REAL Men, are organizing a large group of volunteers for Hamel Rodeo again this year. The rodeo has made several changes—the best is that we will be filling all volunteer spots for ticket sales—with ministry leaders in charge of two ticket areas. This is a great volunteer event that puts our church out in the community, and something to do as a family or with friends while supporting two great ministries. Your gift of time is greatly appreciated. The rodeo is Thursday, July 5, through Sunday, July 8. Hamel Rodeo is a non-profit event, which gives these ministries an opportunity to raise funds for various programs and events that support their mission. MFSM has fed countless people who are homeless, supported a veterans home in St. Cloud, and honored veterans with a wonderful veterans dinner. 2B REAL Men has helped many people with yard work and light maintenance (through Silent Knights) in addition to twice annual yard clean-ups in north Minneapolis. They also provide scholarships to the men’s annual retreat and have plans to bring in speakers for men’s events. Hamel Rodeo is a fun event.
Lord of Life Ministries
Shifts are about 3.5 hours selling tickets, smiling, and greeting. To sign up for a volunteer shift, visit either lordoflife.org/militaryfamilysupport or lordoflife.org/realmen. Military Family Support and 2B REAL Men will also be in the narthex on June 23/24 to answer questions— yee haw!

One Mission One World: Source MN
Glimpse of Urban Living
by Chuck Denninger I grew up in Rochester, New York, a fairly decentsize city. Our family lived a couple of miles from downtown. Growing up, the closest I ever came to a true urban experience was when my parents would take us downtown to a museum or a minor league baseball game. We never really came eye-to-eye with poverty and homelessness. Have you ever had a plain sandwich with stale bread or a bowl of bland, lukewarm soup? If you had this type of food to eat and are homeless, you wouldn’t think much of it. You probably wouldn’t be too picky. Every Wednesday, ‘Source’ opens its doors and provides dinner with fresh, homemade, and savory dishes. Guests are so appreciative and have raved about the food and the kindness. Located in south Minneapolis near the Minneapolis Institute of Art, each Wednesday Source invites folks in the neighborhood, staff, residents of their transitional housing, and volunteers to dinner. Lord of Life volunteers prepare dishes and serve meals along with two other churches. Again this year, Lord of Life Summer Stretch youth will be working one morning a week at Source. In the process, they learn a little about urban outreach using some elbow grease sweeping, mopping, painting, and pulling weeds. During the experience, they get a small glimpse of urban living and, hopefully, an appreciation of how blessed they are living in and near Maple Grove. One of the tweens asked, “What impact has this work made at Source?” Source provides hope, friendship, and transitional housing to the marginalized and disenfranchised. For every task the youth complete, Source staff can focus on their mission. If you are interested in preparing a dish and/or serving at our monthly Source dinner, please contact me directly (chuckdenninger@yahoo.com) or visit lordoflife.org/sourcemn.
A special thank you to Source MN volunteers in March 2018 (at left), December 2017 (at right), and Summer Stretch youth (below).

Also in April, Lord of Life was blessed by Hillary Malo visiting from Uganda and sharing the message about clean, safe water. He thoroughly explained the specific drilling process used throughout many districts in the country. Clean, safe water is incredibly beneficial for better health as well as providing more opportunities for young girls to attend school instead of spending hours walking miles for dirty water.
