What’s Your Story?
I
love stories. I remember as a child, my parents reading me stories. A good story would transport me into the world of my imagination. I would see myself in the midst of the drama … as one of the characters (usually the hero). The adventures of the characters would become my adventures, and I would both suffer and celebrate alongside them.
Pastor Todd Buegler
I still love stories. I am captivated by good books, by good TV shows and movies that tell a compelling story. Now, I love reading books to our boys. We’ve read the Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, and the Harry Potter series. These stories, and the others we’ve read, teach some moral or ethical idea about life: it may be justice, or overcoming obstacles, or standing up for one’s beliefs.
I tell our confirmation students all the time that whether we like it or not, “our lives are a story” with a beginning, a middle and an end. There is drama, comedy, joy, and conflict. And that people will look at our lives and can gain an understanding of what is important to us by the actions we take and the words that we speak. The only choice we have in the matter is what kind of story we want to tell. I think there is value in reflecting on the story of our lives. Are our stories simple, or complex? What kind of values do they mirror? Are they consistent? Are they stories of joy, or stories of challenge? Do they feel like an epic film, or more like reality TV? As people of faith, we need to remember that ultimately, God creates the places where our stories are lived out. While God allows us freedom to make decisions, to choose the paths we take, God has hopes and visions for our lives. For guidance, we look to the scriptures, which show us God’s story and our place within it. The scriptures are full of stories of imagination and wonder, joy and terror, love and loneliness, human need, sorrow, hope, redemption and resurrection. We have all experienced many of these things. The scriptures are not just ancient history…the scriptures intersect God’s story and our own story. It feels like every time I read the Bible, even some of those stories I’ve read many times before, I learn something new about my own life and my own faith. Our lives are a story. What is the story that your life will tell? What are the values that your life’s story will share? I’d encourage you to take some time this month to think about these questions. My hope is that our lives reflect the hope that God has for each of us. May your story and God’s story be woven together, and may this story be one of grace and love, hospitality and faithfulness, and of justice and peace. Blessings in the new year! Pastor Todd

Being a Member of Lord of Life
T
his popular L5 class is for those interested in membership at Lord of Life and those who are already members, but want to explore more fully what being a member of Lord of Life can mean. All of our pastors are involved in teaching this class, so it also will give individuals the opportunity to get to know each pastor better.
January 14 – “Being a Lutheran” Pastor Peter Geisendorfer-Lindgren will be about the basics of Lutheranism including the Reformation, key points of Lutheran doctrine, the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), and ecumenism. January 21 – “Life-long Faith Development” Pastor Todd Buegler will describe the Lutheran understanding of the Word and Sacraments and how our faith walk is a life-long experience. January 28 – “Expectations of Membership” Pastor Peter Geisendorfer-Lindgren will share the history of Lord of Life, and what it means to be a member of our congregation. February 4 – “The Journey Inward and the Journey Outward” Pastor Karen Sue Greimel and Pastor Dave McCarty will team up for this session to talk about the way the nurturing of our inner spiritual lives is connected to reaching out in mission and service to the world. February 11 – “Using Your God-given Gifts” Pastor David Lippit will help us understand the unique gifts God has given each one of us and how we can best use those gifts in ways that are personally meaningful and bless those around us. To learn more about other classes available during L5’s Session 3, see article on next page and visit lordoflife.org/L5 to register.

Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him. —Psalm 37:7
A January Devotion by Darlene Bowden Muschett
D
“
arlene, you must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle; will you please stop talking?” Thus spoke my late, beloved Father Harry to me when I was about four years old, long before CDs and tapes existed. I admit that I have continued in my loquacious, extroverted ways. Several years ago, it was difficult for me to be silent before the Lord. I was afraid of silence because I didn’t always like the memories and thoughts that surfaced.
Fast-forward a few decades. Surely God has a sense of humor: I now enjoy silence very much. Most mornings I sit in silence as I wake up with that first cup of coffee. Sometimes I silently repeat a sacred word or phrase—Jesus, God, yours, Lord. Other times I simply sit still, seeking to open myself to that amazing Presence. When my mind wanders—when, not if—I try to remember, as someone said, that each time my mind wanders and I return to the silence, God is so glad to welcome me back, over and over and over again. Let us pray. Dear God, remind me often that sometimes I can pray simply by sitting in silence with you. Amen. Copyright 2013 Augsburg Fortress from The Word In Season, Volume 82, Number 1. Where God Wants Us To Be
T
he Church Assessment Tool (CAT) that we took last fall had a number of questions that related to the important area of generosity. This was one of them: As you think about your financial giving to the church, what influences your decision-making? The question asked responders to rank the influences below in order of importance and this is what we said. 1. My personal faith and understanding of being generous in supporting God’s work in the world. 2. The effectiveness of our church’s ministry in making a real difference in my life and in the lives of others. 3. The current state of the economy. 4. How well our church manages its finances. 5. How engaged our church is in reaching out to the needs of the world.
By a substantial margin the most important influence on giving was the understanding that being a faithful Christian meant that you should be generous. Outside factors or even how the money was spent was secondary to the need to be generous as God has been generous to us. The second influence was also important and it focused on the effectiveness of Lord of Life’s ministry and our ability to make a difference in people’s lives. The interesting thing about the remaining responses is the sharp distinction we made between the first two answers and the last three. The last three were largely interchangeable and they were almost always rated 3, 4, or 5. People gave even when the economy was bad. They were largely unconcerned with management of the finances. (I actually think the low level of importance we gave management is a result of our good management. If there was some malfeasance number four would go to the top.) This is interesting stuff. And it is only 1 of 100 questions we asked. There is much work to be done as we analyze where we are as a church and where God wants us to be. —Pastor Peter Lord of Life Weekly Giving — November 2013

On November 21 the OWLs were off to Cottage Grove visiting Cedarhurst, a historic countryhouse which has hosted meetings of many prominent people including four U.S. presidents. Celebrate Recovery by Michelle Welinski
T
here is a story of a man who was walking along and suddenly fell into a deep dark pit. He brushed himself off and tried to get out, however the walls were too tall and there were no footholds or handholds for him to grab. Three people came walking by and saw the man in trouble. They offered to help. One extended his hand, but it did not reach. One threw a rope but it was not long enough. The third got a ladder but it, too, was not long enough. Just then a stranger came walking by and asked if he could help. The three told him all the ways they tried to help the man down in the pit. Much to the surprise of the three people, the stranger jumped down into the pit with the stranded man. The man explained all the ways the others tried to help him and how they failed, and “now there are two of us in the pit... what were you thinking?” The stranger just smiled and said, “I’ve been down here before, and I know how to get out.”

789 Kids!
winter release day
Y
es, 789 kids received Christmas gifts via Lord of Life’s Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift drive in November. Each gift brings joy, hope, and smiles to a child whose life has been haunted by poverty, disaster, disease, or war. More than that, each box brings the true meaning of Christmas—God’s gift to mankind, the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. Operation Christmas Child works in partnership with local churches where the boxes are distributed. Shoebox gifts enable vulnerable children in places like Nepal, South Sudan, and India to get involved with local churches and discover how much God loves them. Over 100 million shoebox gifts have been given to children since 1993. Thank you for supporting this ministry!

Lord of Life is a community of people called together by God’s Holy Spirit who confess Christ as Lord. We wish to be a church whose door is open to all people. And with the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will strive to educate, comfort, aid and spread the word of love in Christ’s name. We believe worship is of most importance in our life together as we receive God’s love through Word and Sacrament. We will be involved with seeking justice in our community, state, nation, and world. We hold high the dignity and worth of every human being as created in God’s image and forgiven in Christ. We hope to be a serving church, in the name of Him who came as Servant of all.
In November Karing Kingdom Preschool held an Usborne Book Fair with the intention that any proceeds would go to the Ronald McDonald House in the form of books. The book fair was a huge success and we earned over $1000 in free books for the house. This photo is just one of the enthusiastic classes sharing smiles on this accomplishment. Thank you to everyone who purchased books!
