Lord of Life’s Discipleship Path by Pastor Joel Wight Hoogheem

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” These are Jesus’ closing words in the gospel of Matthew (28:19-20). We take these words seriously. As a faith community and as people who identify as Jesus-followers, we seek to make disciples and to deepen our own discipleship. This is the reality addressed by Tony Morgan in his book, The Unstuck Church. He offers the idea that an effective church at this point in history will offer people a path forward in their discipleship instead of just putting out what he calls “a pile of programs.” Each congregation has its own path, just as each congregation has its own specific mission. Here, then, is the Lord of Life Discipleship Path. Our default identity in the world today is consumer. As consumers, our first question is: What’s in it for me? As a church in 2019, we meet people where they’re at, and they’re asking this question, so we seek to answer it. But discipleship goes much deeper than this. The next step on our discipleship path is to move from consumer to contributor. As our understanding and experience of Jesus deepens, we see beyond ourselves and our desires. Our question transforms into: What can I offer? As we go further on our journey, the next step on the path is conductor, which brings the question: How can I lead? Spiritual gifts are affirmed and identified, used to conduct ministries and lead discipleship initiatives. As faith matures and discipleship deepens further, the next step on the path is connector. The question becomes: Who can I empower? This is not mere delegation. It’s about raising up new leaders and being secure enough to give away responsibilities by trusting in our fellow sisters and brothers in Christ. pasto r's a rt i c le

We’ll keep focusing on the Lord of Life Discipleship Path as we continue taking Jesus’ words seriously: Go, make disciples; baptize them; and teach them. And remember, Jesus is with us to the end of the age.

You are invited to particiate in—

A Lenten Look at Lutheranism / Adult Confimation During Lent beginning March 3, Pastor Karen Geisendorfer-Lindgren and Lord of Life member and Luther Seminary graduate Ina Barton will be leading sessions on what it means to be Lutheran. Held in the Luther Room at 11am, we will talk about how Lutherans understand: •

The Bible

•

Baptism and Communion

•

The Holy Trinity

•

Grace

•

Living a Christian life.

We will also learn about Martin Luther and other key players in the Protestant Reformation. Who was Frederick the Wise, John Staupitz, Philip Melanchthon, and Katharina Von Bora? And why are they important to the reformation movement? In addition to learning about what it means to be Lutheran, we will talk about how Lutherans are similar yet different than other denominations. Participants will also have the opportunity to follow an adult confirmation track, if they would like to be confirmed. Shared briefly below is the story of Wendy and Chris Tollefson who were confirmed as adults by Pastor Karen. You are encouraged to pray about this exciting step in your own faith journey. Feel free to visit lordoflife.org/adultconfirm or contact Pastor Karen directly (karengl@lordoflife.org).

chris tollefson My wife Wendy and I took the adult confirmation class together. Neither one of us grew up in the church and did not attend worship, church school, or confirmation as children.

lifelong

learning

When we saw that there was an opportunity to get confirmed as adults, we were both excited and eager to attend. We wanted to learn and experience our new faith, especially being a young family with children of our own. We felt that we needed this experience to be able to support our family who would soon be starting on their own faith journeys.

4

Adult confirmation was sort of a launching pad for us as we became more active in ministries at Lord of Life. From helping teach church school, attending Bible studies to being C3 confirmation ministry leaders for all four of our kids. We have developed so many relationships because of the adult confirmation course, both as a couple and individually. [Chris is now also a member of Lord of Life’s council.] From Word for Women, Inspired Images, Via De Cristo, Men’s Ministry—but the biggest relationship gained was the one we have with Jesus, knowing and understanding that we are loved by Him beyond measure.

February 5, 7pm, at OMNI Brewing in Maple Grove—

Connect Life: The 5 Love Languages Words of affirmation.

Quality time.

Acts of service.

Physical touch.

Receiving gifts.

These are the five love languages that Gary Chapman outlines in his popular book, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts. He believes that the more we understand ourselves and each other—on how we give and receive love—the stronger our relationships will be. This can be an important thing to learn for our ourselves, relationships with significant others, parenting, and so much more. Connect Life explore the various ways we experience love in our lives and how to grow deeper in our relationships. Our large group presenter will be Matthew Spoden, sharing his research as a pastor-in-training on this topic. On February 5, we invite you to engage in this meaningful and worthwhile discussion. All participants are encouraged to complete the free online quiz at 5lovelanguages.com to help understand their own love language before our time together. For more information and to reserve a space, visit lordoflife.org/connectlife or contact Pastor Kaitlyn (kaitlynf@lordoflife.org).

There’s a spot for you during the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack—

A Donation Worth Double!

Lord of Life members and friends gave an outstanding contribution to FMSC during the annual October FMSC drive. As we were able to donate the funds prior to year-end, every dollar donated was doubled by an individual for a total donation of $50,000. Praise God and thanks to Lord of Life—thank you so much! Charity Navigator, the largest and most-utilized charity evaluator in America, has once again given FMSC their highest rating of Four Stars. This is the 14th year in a row FMSC received this rating; it puts them in the top 1% of charities nationwide for Charity Navigator’s recognition!

In the FMSC office, LaVie Kinvig presented the check to Director Mark Crea.

Mark your calendar for FMSC’s next big event—the annual Northwest Metro MobilePack on February 20-24. Sign up your small groups, youth, OWLs, family and friends to help pack a million meals during this five-day marathon. See more details below. Thank you to all who contributed financially in October and who will contribute with time working at February’s MobilePack. May all of you have a wonderful 2019 with God’s Work. Our Hands. —LaVerne and Denny Kinvig

Your time and efforts make a difference toward—

One Million Meals

Take part in packing one million meals for hungry children and families throughout the world. Measure and scoop ingredients, seal bags, prepare boxes for shipping—it will all be explained and demonstrated thoroughly for newcomers. This is a great service opportunity for families, friends, coworkers, small groups, sports teams, scout troops, and others. Please note volunteers must be at least five years old. Although you are welcome to register at any time, a specific Lord of Life packing day has been set for Thursday, February 21, from 12:30-2:30pm or 6-8:30pm. The location is at the Egan Companies in Champlin. You are encouraged to join in on February 21 with many others within the congregation. It is an opportunity to show we are “Loved by God. Sent to Serve.” Register at lordoflife.org/fmscmp for a Lord of Life packing shift or another day/time that works better with your schedule.

want to know “how we are doing financially.” My hunch is that very few people care about how each week’s offering compares to budget. I also think that comparing current giving to last year’s giving is more helpful than comparing it to budget. Therefore, I am going to give a new look a try. On this page will still be an article about stewardship and giving at Lord of Life. There will also be simpler statistics comparing year-to-date giving for the current year and the former year. Most exciting for me is a new section, which will be an “Interesting Giving Fact.” In this issue that fact has to do with a series of seven straight increases in giving. In future issues, it will have to do with other “fun facts” about your giving to Lord of Life. This is a trial. If you have reactions or suggestions,

Seeing Time by Margot Storti-Marron

This morning, standing in the bathroom, I looked out the door and thought about how many times I got up fast, hurrying for practices, lay there worrying about how to get it all done and what to do first, or, not enough, woke up enjoying the peace of waking, surrounded by family. I can almost see it in the warm air left over from a night of sleeping, swirling over the top of rumpled pillows, the bedspread not yet pulled tight. Then, it’s gone. No matter how I was . . . mindful, time is gone. I think of mindful as a bargain to be made with time. If I would simply be mindful, time would slow or stay with me, longer. I’m thinking now, time is like air, taking on warmth and breath, dissolving all into an invisible sea. Felt as mysterious currents brushing by, seen as beauty in the tinted air of morning.

Update from Our Mongolian Missionaries Dear Lord of Life, Our time in Minnesota last year was short but good; it feels like a distant memory now. It was great to meet and visit you all and get to know you better! We especially appreciated the time of prayer that we had with your prayer group—that was very encouraging and great support to our whole family. The World Mission Prayer League’s (WMPL) purpose is to pray as a Lutheran community for over 100 Lutheran missionaries, serving in 20 countries. The WMPL headquarters is based at 232 Clifton Avenue in Minneapolis. How do I get involved... Pray: Become a prayer partner. You can hear directly from a missionary through newsletters and email updates. Pray: As a community of believers, attend a daily prayer group at 10am and a Tuesday prayer group at 6:30pm in Minneapolis. Mobilize: Missionary speakers are available for events. Send: Support a missionary or mission project financially. Go: Serve in the mission field.

Currently it is the deep cold winter season, and pollution in Ulaanbaatar is reaching its highest point. Ulaanbaatar, the capitol of Mongolia and where we live, is the most polluted city in the world in the winter months. We live near the northeast edge of the city, where pollution has been lesser in the past. However, as more people have moved into this area, it has become increasingly bad air quality. There have been times when we cannot see more than three houses away in the thick grey/ brown smoke. The smoke is almost entirely raw coal, burnt in very basic, inefficient cookstoves from the ger district. But for those out of money, garbage, tires, and anything that can burn is used. This causes major health problems for people in our community this time of year. It is especially difficult for children and the elderly. Pneumonia is the second leading cause of death for children under five! Our family is privileged to afford indoor air filters and good quality masks. Many people cannot afford these or do not realize their importance. Prayers for a solution for this city’s air pollution problem are needed! Air quality testing statistics are provided by the US Embassy; readings are literally off the charts when measuring pollutants. It has been a continuing challenge to learn how to lead and minister in a culture far from our own. For me, Ben, the challenges of leadership alone are high! This has been the biggest area of growth, stretching, and prayer for me. God calls us, equips us, and gives us grace. But it is another area of prayer we could definitely use support! Leadership is at the same time both deeply rewarding and deeply taxing. I love to be partnering with God and God’s plans as well as being a willing instrument for God. Our family is doing well. Our kids have become busier with more friends and increased freedom as they mature, like learning to take the city bus to their events. They really enjoy a nearby international church youth group. They also are doing a play with the homeschool co-op. Kaylee is actually the director and the main character for the play! We are thankful to the Lord for providing for these social needs for our teenagers and preteen. Thank you and for your continued prayers, support, and partnership! Sincerely,

Ben and Jody Selin & family

Mindfulness Skills

by Michelle Tomlinson In a fast-paced world it is hard enough for adults—let alone children— to slow down and be mindful. Mindfulness is a common phrase being used these days. Do you know what it means to practice mindfulness? It may be described as “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, and used as a therapeutic technique.” Lorilee Virnig, MA, BCC, RYT, from Healthwise Behavorial Health & Wellness will be the Refresh guest presenter on February 25 at 6:30pm. It may be difficult enough for adults to sometimes acknowledge their feelings—imagine what it might be like for a child. Ms. Virnig has extensive training in individual and family play therapies including collaborative problemsolving, healthy parenting and relationship skills, and mindfulness techniques. She is a board-certified life and ADHD coach. She is also a certified instructor of Yoga Calm® for Children, Yoga4Cancer®, and mindfulness training for children, teens, and parents. Come and learn skills to help your children slow down and establish mindful habits. Who knows, you may just learn something that you can put into practice. There is no cost or registration needed. Questions? Contact Michelle Tomlinson at michellet@lordoflife.org or 763.420.5015 x118.
