a decorative, spiritual valentine

In the middle of a Minnesota winter, flowers and sunshine are a welcome image. Throughout this issue is a collection of florals, personal thoughts, quotes, Bible verses, and small heartfelt messages created by Zola Dasinger. An avid flower gardener, Zola shares, Flowers are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul, and love is the one thing that gives this world a hint of heaven. Flowers and love are combined to convey the essence of God’s character: deep, immeasurable love for all God has created in His highest excellence. It is little reminders like this that lift our hearts toward God. From my heart to yours ... Happy Valentine’s Day!

One Year In

by Lead Pastor Joel Wight Hoogheem and Senior Pastor Peter Geisendorfer-Lindgren In January of last year, Pastor Joel was welcomed into our congregation to be the key component in a transition plan that would result in his succeeding Pastor Peter as the lead pastor at Lord of Life. One year later, there are some folks who think the plan is complete, others who are unaware that it’s happening, and most who know that it’s in process. To that end, both of us get asked regularly, “How’s the transition going?” The short, boring, and true answer is: “Great!” Both of us experience a deep sense that God is leading this transition and we both remain fully committed to its success. Plus, we really like one another! Over the past year, we’ve found that we’re alike in some important ways and very different in other, just as important, ways. It’s been a valuable time of learning for both of us as we have worked closely together to familiarize Joel with all aspects of Lord of Life’s complex ministry. In addition to sharing that things are going well and the succession is moving full speed ahead, we wanted to share some important dates in the coming months that will mark the progress and completion of this process. Since January 1, Joel has assumed the leadership of staff meetings and many administrative duties. On April 1, Easter will be celebrated, and Joel will preach in worship. Whereas we evenly shared preaching at the ten Christmas services, Easter will mark a wide, public recognition of the succession. On September 1, the transition will be complete as Joel assumes full responsibilities of the lead pastor and as Peter moves into his new role as full-time pastor emeritus. Peter will continue to preach at least once a month, lead worship, perform weddings, funerals and baptisms, and, as he describes it, “do all the fun stuff.” In addition to the culmination of the succession plan, 2018 will bring several other changes and possibilities for renewal to Lord of Life. With Pastor Karen Geisendorfer-Lindgren’s transition to her pastor emeritus role and Pastor Sarah Bunge’s decision to leave her contract call early, we will begin the process of reorganizing and adding to our pastoral staff. With the tragic death of Lee Fuchs, there will be important work to keep our music program functioning at its high level. Through this transition, we are so grateful for the love and support of the Lord of Life community and for the grace of God who continues to grow the mission and ministry of this church. We remain committed to being faithful to the good news of Jesus Christ, and we thank you for being our partners in the Gospel in this exciting and momentous time! In Christ, Pastor Joel & Pastor Peter

Jesus’ steps. Your journey. A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land—

Come and See!

by Pastor David McCarty and Pastor Joel Wight Hoogheem In the Gospel of John, the first disciples meet Jesus and His intial words are those of an invitation: “Come and see.” It’s that same invitation offered to each of us as we are invited to walk with Jesus through the land we’ve come to know as holy. During Lent 2019, Lord of Life will host a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (March 29 April 8); and we hope you can Come and See. Pastor Joel and Pastor Karen Wight Hoogheem along with Pastor David and Lisa McCarty will be hosting this journey. This is a ‘pilgrimage’ because we believe it will be more than a typical sightseeing tour. It’s an opportunity to fully experience some of the places where Jesus walked, taught, and healed. Some of the highlights will include Manger Square and Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the Sea of Galilee, Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth, the Jordan River, Caesarea on the Mediterranean, Masada, the Dead Sea, Qumran, Mt. Carmel, the Mount of Olives, and Jerusalem (Via Dolorosa at right). Additionally, we will have the opportunity to worship with our sisters and brothers at both Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jerusalem, visit an Israeli settlement and a Palestinian refugee camp, and see Lutheran World Federation’s work that Lord of Life supports at Augusta Victoria Hospital.

informational meetings sunday, february 11, 11 am monday, february 12, 7 pm

There will be informational meetings on Sunday, February 11 (11 am) and Monday, February 12 (7 pm). If you’ve ever thought you might be interested in a trip to the Holy Land, please come to one of these sessions. We will cover everything you need to know in order to decide if Jesus is inviting you to Come and See. Space is limited; visit lordoflife.org/theholyland for more details on availability and registration. Also in preparation for a visit to the Holy Land, you are invited to attend Sundays with Nour (details below).

With great attendance in July and returning for a second session as promised, all are invited to attend—

Sundays with Nour

6 February 2018

by the Holy Land Ministry Team A native of Jerusalem, Nour Nabris will be our guest in the Luther Room via Skype on February 4, 11, and 18 at 11 am. Three sessions in July gave a brief history of the region, origin of the conflict in Palestine and Israel, and current situations. February sessions focus on three main topics: •

Jerusalem: What is it like to live there and what are the main challenges

•

Hebron: A glimpse into everyday struggles

•

Palestinian prisoners and violations against them

Following each presentation, there will be time for questions and answers. You do not need to attend all sessions; come as your schedule permits. No registration is required. For more information about the Holy Land ministry, including Nour Nabris’ résumé, visit lordoflife.org/theholyland.

This Is a Test ... Why Do You Give?

by Pastor Chick Lane As the recently passed federal tax bill was winding its way through Congress, I had an interesting conversation with a Lord of Life member. He asked, “Do you think changes in the tax law will impact how members of Lord of Life give to the congregation?” I replied, “I hope not.” He said, “I don’t think people give to Lord of Life to get a tax deduction. I think they give because they care about the congregation and its ministry.” I replied, “I agree, and I hope we are both correct.” That bill is now law. The standard deduction is doubled. State property and income tax deductions are limited to $10,000. Many Lord of Life members who have itemized deductions in the past may not be itemizing on 2018 taxes. This means contributions to Lord of Life will also not be deductible. How will this impact people’s giving to Lord of Life and other non-profits? Will they still give as they have in the past, even though they can’t deduct their donations on Schedule A? Was my conversation partner correct? All of this provides each of us with a test. Why do you give? Has your giving to Lord of Life been driven by your ability to deduct donations on your tax return? Or, has your giving to Lord of Life been driven by faith, and by conviction that the congregation is making a difference in the world in Jesus’ name, and is worthy of support because of what it is doing? I obviously think there is a preferred answer to these last questions. I encourage you to ask yourself, Why do I give? I also encourage you to ground your giving in what God has done for you, and in appreciation for what Lord of Life is doing in this community and the world.

Encouraging People

Lent: Encouraging Others / Lifelong Learning

Faith is not a solitary endeavor. There are significant people who have helped to shape our faith and who have encouraged us to follow Jesus Christ. On Wednesday evenings in Lent, six individuals who played instrumental roles in the faith lives of the Lord of Life pastors will have their stories told. “Encouraging People” is both about people who have been encouraging and about our response to God’s grace as we encourage others in their faith journeys. You are invited to be a part of this special worship series on Wednesdays throughout the season of Lent. The stories of these encouraging people will embolden you to encourage people, too!

Lucado Lenten Study

by Pastor Donna Rohrer This year we will offer many different times to come together for a Lenten study. We will use Max Lucado’s video and study guide, He Chose the Nails. Each week we will talk about the gifts Jesus gave us: •

He chose to be one of us

•

He chose to forgive us

•

He chose to invite us into His presence

•

He chose to love us forever

•

He chose to give us victory

Sessions are Sundays at 8:30 and 9:45 am; Monday and Tuesdays at 7 pm. Join in as we prepare our hearts and minds to receive the love, forgiveness, and hope from Jesus’ death and resurrection. A workbook is available for purchase ($7) in Reflections of Faith.

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) with One Mission One World (1M1W)—

Partnering to Feed the World

by Pastor Dave McCarty Lord of Life is proud to be an FMSC supporter for over 16 years. As a Christian non-profit, FMSC is committed to feed God’s starving children who are hungry in body and spirit. The FMSC goal is to reach everyone, until all are fed. People are hungry; Jesus knows feeding the body is important in order to feed the soul. In Matthew 14, Jesus tells the disciples to feed the crowd. In 2018 we are still looking at a hungry world, and Jesus is telling you and me to feed the people. On Wednesday, February 21, each one of us will have a great opportunity to partner in feeding the world. Lord of Life’s 1M1W ministries work with organizations in the very same communities receiving the food we will pack. The food helps people around the world including 1M1W countries of the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Uganda. Missionaries who have served in those countries can speak personally about the effects malnutrition and an inadequate food supply have on families they’ve come to love. Denny and LaVie Kinvig have been the our FMSC ministry leaders for many years. They, too, have witnessed the benefits this food brings. Denny and LaVie have been a blessing to the world through their tireless work with FMSC and in so many other ways as long-term, faithful members of Lord of Life. Again this year, thanks to the congregation’s generous financial support, Lord of Life helped FMSC purchase the food. Now we need helping hands to pack it. Visit lordoflife.org/fmsc and follow the MobilePack link: sign up your family, neighbors, coworkers. Shift times include 10 am-12 pm, 1-3 pm, 5-7 pm, or 7:309:30 pm. Volunteers must be at least 5 years old.

Matthew 14:15-16 (NRSV):

When it was evening, the disciples came to Jesus and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”

Jesus said to them,

“They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”

A Mind-Body-Spirit Approach to Managing Grief —

Tapping into Lightness Tuesday, February 20, 6:30-8:30 pm

Grief is unlike any other human emotion. Whether it be from the death of a loved one, the ending of a relationship or a job, a loss of identity—grief is a secret affliction that fills the body with heaviness, consumes the mind with wheel-spinning thoughts, and muffles or dims the spirit. And though nothing can magically take a person’s grief away, there are strategies to lighten its intensity and ease its duration. Led by Licensed Clinical Psychologist Heidi Kopacek, PsyD, LP, this seminar will provide several tips and techniques for managing grief from a mind-body-spirit perspective. Topics include:

2. Discuss a mind-body-spirit approach to grief and how this differs from other grief management approaches 3. Concrete tips and strategies for attending to grief in the mind, the body, and the spirit

One Mission One World: World Mission Prayer League (WMPL), first in a two-part series—

Ministry in Mongolia

by Greg and Cheryl Myhr For over 30 years Lord of Life has helped spread the Gospel to unreached parts of the world through its partnership with WMPL. Financial support in the last nine years has been directed toward the Thomas family, who served in central Asia (China).

Craig and Kristi Thomas have begun an extended leave of absence with WMPL attending to the health and education needs of their four adopted Chinese children. We wish them an abundance of blessings during this time. Lord of Life’s support will now focus on the Selin family who are serving in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. This month we want to share some general information about Mongolia. Next month the Selin family will share more information about themselves and their work in Mongolia. An Overview1 of Mongolia:

•

Founded in 1206, this landlocked unitary sovereign state in east Asia is located between China to the south and Russia to the north.

•

Population is just over 3 million people in an area of 605,000 square miles with concentration in the north central region; geographically divided into 21 provinces and one municipality with an independent system of courts.

•

Mongols are quite homogeneous ethnically, the vast majority of population speaks Mongolian. Most are Buddhist with a mix of traditional nomadic, shamanic beliefs, with a small percentage of Muslims and an even smaller number of Christians.

•

Mongolia has a sophisticated social welfare system, funded by a combination of contributory social insurance and subsidies from the state budget.

•

Hundreds of general schools offer primary and secondary education, dozens of special vocational schools, about a dozen universities, and about 100 colleges.

•

The number of sunny days averages between 220-260 year; the most popular traditional sport in Mongolia is wrestling.

Shown above is a woman near her traditional yurt (from the Turkic languages) or ger (Mongolian). It is a portable, round tent covered with skins or felt or other material as a nomadic dwelling in the steppes of central Asia. The Selin family lives in the capitol city of Ulaanbaatar.

To meet the Selin family in person, please join in at 11 am, Sunday, March 18, for a joint Adult Forum/Prayer School event in the Luther Room. They will be sharing about their experiences and what God is doing in Mongolia. As well as, how they felt God’s calling to serve, and the impact of prayer on their lives and work. No registration is necessary; all are welcome. Interested in learning more about the work of World Mission Prayer League or would like to be involved with the Selin family? Christians Reaching Out in Social Service (CROSS)—

Give Baskets of Love

This year Easter is April 1. CROSS will again be providing Easter items for children in need. We are collecting baskets, candy, Easter storybooks, and other Easter-related items (crayons, small stuffed animals, plastic eggs, etc.). Last year over 700 children received baskets—and every year the need grows. Donations can be left in the Service Center until February 28. While all donations are appreciated, this year we would like to make a special plea for books that tell the Easter story. Christmas toy drives may be more fun, but without the Easter story the Christmas message is incomplete. Long after the candy is eaten, what remains important is the message of the resurrection. Thank you for everything you do to support CROSS. —Barb Mewaldt and CROSS Task Force

The Four Loves

A Book by C. S. Lewis Written in 1960, The Four Loves is a classic that summarizes four kinds of human love: affection, friendship, erotic, and the love of God. In Greek, these loves are storge (empathy), philia (friendship), eros (erotic), and agape (charity or unconditional “God” love).1 This book’s wise, gentle, candid reflections on the virtues and dangers of love draw on sources from Jane Austen to St. Augustine. The chapter on agape may be the best thing Lewis ever wrote about Christianity. Consider his reflection on Augustine’s teaching that one must love only God, because only God is eternal, and all earthly love will someday pass away: Who could conceivably begin to love God on such a prudential ground—because the security (so to speak) is better? Who could even include it among the grounds for loving? Would you choose a wife or a friend—if it comes to that, would you choose a dog— in this spirit? One must be outside the world of love, of all loves, before one thus calculates. When he begins to describe the nature of faith, Lewis writes: “Take it as one man’s reverie, almost one man’s myth. If anything in it is useful to you, use it; if anything is not, never give it a second thought.” —Book review by Michael Joseph Gross2

A small Lenten service for pre-kindergarten students will be held. Then it’s the letter J for Jesus. February’s Chapel Chat theme is “Jesus Loves Me.” We end our month with Z for zoo. It should be a roaring good time! Please note that Karing Kingdom will be closed on February 16, 19 and 26. Registration continues for the 2018-19 school year.

From baby Jesus placed in the manger, to bringing Him gifts, to singing in celebration—Karing Kingdom’s Christmas program was merry and bright!
