Enjoy God’s presence now without running to the next thing—

Will It Be Later Soon? by Pastor Joel Wight Hoogheem Several Halloweens ago, as my son Ian and I were driving around, he queried, “Will it be later soon?” While he was most likely wondering about when he’d be trickor-treating since he was told it would happen “later,” I was struck by what a deep philosophical question he asked. Will it be later soon? There seems to be a tug for many of us to always be seeking out the next thing, whether it is an event, an experience, an item, or whatever. We tend to be looking ahead, always seeking after that which is not yet. Waiting and anticipation are a genuine struggle for so many. Even as Ian and I were driving around on that October 31, we could have wandered into many stores to see all the Christmas stuff available for sale. The outcome of this Christmas Creep, however, is that when Christmas actually comes, we are so sick and tired of dealing with all the Christmas stuff for so long—the decorations, the music, the lights, all of it—that we can’t wait to be done with it, pack it up, turn it off, and put it away. Until next October. None of this is news to any of us, of course. Yet as Christians, we live in this tension of what the world around us proclaims and what Scripture and time-honored traditions of our faith proclaim. The world races to Christmas, but we wait. Heck, we even have a whole season of the church year dedicated to waiting: Advent. The word “Advent” originates from a Latin word for “coming.” Anita Stauffer writes, “Advent focuses on this ‘coming’ in three ways: Christ coming in the past as the baby at Bethlehem, Christ coming in the present in Word and Sacrament and in the fellowship of the church, and Christ coming again in the future at the end of time.” Blue is the color of Advent, representing hope. Darkness is a theme of the season and, Stauffer suggests, “Advent is a time for visual restraint and simplicity” in worship spaces. While the world rushes to Christmas, we patiently wait with hope in anticipation not only of our Christmas celebrations, but also of the coming again of Christ. So our faith leads us to walk out-of-step with the world around us. It doesn’t mean that we can’t listen to Christmas music or decorate our homes or anything of the sort. What it means, however, is that we engage the season of Advent by waiting. We can even relish the waiting and savor the anticipation of the celebration of the coming of Christ. I hope that our worship experiences will assist you in keeping the rush of Christmas in its proper perspective. (Worship schedule details for Advent and Christmas are on Page 2 and 5.)

Pastor’s Article

It will be later soon enough, so we can enjoy God’s presence right now without running to the next thing. Waiting with the confident hope of the coming—and coming again—of Christ, we pray patiently in the darkness of Advent, knowing that Christmas will come in due time, that it cannot be rushed, and that waiting may be hard but it is not as hard as having nothing for which to wait.

Spontaneous Generosity

by Pastor Chick Lane In the Old Testament there are three different ways God’s people are instructed to give. The first, and the most basic, is the tithe. God’s people are to give 10% of their income to God. Interestingly, this is not used primarily to support the temple. Rather, it is used for celebrations and to provide for the poor. The second is called offerings. These offerings are made on festivals. In our day, this would be like making a special gift to Lord of Life at Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. The third, which is expected but spontaneous, is called gifts. These gifts are to be given when someone sees a need, like encountering a beggar at the city gate. December always feels like a month that calls out for this last sort of giving—spontaneous giving. Each year my wife and I sit down and discuss how we want to do our “end-of-year” giving. This is always somewhat spontaneous giving that goes to ministries we don’t support the rest of the year. Some of these repeat year after year, others are new each year. Throughout the month, she carries extra coins in her purse and seeks out the red kettles often found outside stores. We like to give money to our granddaughters and ask them to decide where they want to give it. What are your family traditions around spontaneous giving in December? Do you have any? If so, celebrate them, and make sure to include kids or grandkids, if you have them. If spontaneous giving in December hasn’t been a practice in the past, why not give it a try. In the hustle and hassle of what is often the busiest month of the year, spontaneous generosity can bring a smile to your face and a warmth to your heart.

Crossways Bible Study by Pastor Donna Rohrer

Join with others who want to know and understand God’s plan and God’s love. Beginning January 20/21, we’ll have a Bible study to help us learn “The Story of the Bible.” Using colorful symbols that are both visual and well-explained, we’ll learn more about familiar stories—and discover more stories and what they mean today. Using a timeline to help understand how all these stories fit together will also teach God’s plan for us. (For those of you who have taken a class with me, this is all about looking more deeply into the timeline we have been using.) There are six sessions with ten lessons in each session. We will do two sessions a year, starting this winter and then a fall session. Lessons will be led by Lord of Life member Don Clark and me. This study is for people who have spent time studying the Bible and for those who want to start learning more now. The lesson book has colorful, well-explained drawings to explain God’s great plan and a workbook to dig more deeply into certain themes. One of the big “take-aways” from this study is learning how these stories fit into the different cultures and time periods and understanding how our lives are touched by God in our time. There will be an overview meeting on Sunday, December 2, at 9:45am, and Monday, December 3, at 7pm. Books will be available for purchase and the excitement of seeing how maps and charts and pictures can help us unfold the story. This will be a great opportunity to deepen your faith with more understanding of God’s story.

Sunday, December 9, 5pm—

The Balancing Act

Clean Slate, Have You Ever Wanted a Re-Do? As adults, we are hard-wired to constantly have our plates spinning in the air. Family. Friends. Work. Life. Faith. Finances. The list could go on and on. And yet, how often do we feel like we are living life to the fullest? This last session on December 9 will include looking at our priorities in life and reimagining our time from a clean slate. By embracing how we make time for the things we value, we will seek balance and wholeness, as we piece together the things that bring joy and enhance our lives. For more information, contact Pastor Kaitlyn (kaitlynf@lordoflife.org).

Connect Life is focused on those in their 20s, 30s, and 40s—

“Whole:” Reading and Reflecting December 4, 7pm, OMNI Brewing in Maple Grove

“Look around and you’ll notice…the world is covered with jagged edges,” says author and pastor Steve Wiens. He has a point, when we really pay attention, the world isn’t perfect. We don’t live in a utopian society, no matter how much we think that we do. Yet, as we notice the imperfections, there can also be enormous amounts of beauty and grace. Lord of Life Ministries

At Connect Life this December, we will be discussing Steve Wiens book, Whole: Restoring What Is Broken in Me, You, and the Entire World, and asking questions of vulnerability, peace, and hungering for a better world. You are invited to read the book prior to December 4 (although not required) then come ready for conversations that meet us in this broken world. RSVP at lordoflife.org/connectlife.

Dave and Lindi Lund

Merle Waldron Lorie and Terry Robertson

Dominican Republic Mission Trip

by Merle Waldron At the end of every worship service, we say as a congregation, “We are children of God, loved beyond measure, sent to serve the world.” So what does that mean, “sent to serve the world?” This year for five Lord of Lifers— Lindi and Dave Lund, Lorie and Terry Robertson, and me—it meant going back to the Dominican Republic to experience the mission again and renew God’s love, grace, and peace. From the first planning meetings to the travel, the focus was not about building a house, it was about being a servant of God. The Holy Spirit directed us in everything, and we were open to God’s leading. It’s hard to say what was the most memorable part of our mission, but everyone agreed—even our Dominican partners—that this was a relaxed week of building a home. We opened our eyes to see what the Holy Spirit had in store for us and to see how much God cares. Yes, the home was built and turned over to the family. Yet, there was so much more the Lord gave to us. The week began with a walk through the community seeing the families and homes we worked on in the past two years. During Sunday’s worship, we had the honor of presenting Pastor Juan’s grandson to the Lord, with others from the congregation. We had daily devotions at the work site. We played with the kids everywhere. We had arts and craft projects: building motorcycles out of wood scraps, drawing and coloring, playing ball, Frisbee™, and Giant Jenga™. We laughed together and helped the family and kids build with us on the home. We prayed together as a community, it couldn’t have been better. Each morning before we started work, we opened with prayer and a devotion focused on prayer, identity, passion, practice, promise, and purpose. Devotions reminded us not just who we are, but whose we are: a child of God loved beyond measure. Each evening, we’d recap the day and be in awe of all God had done. It was a week in which we saw God moving throughout the community and within the servants he called to go to the Dominican Republic. It truly opened our eyes and hearts to the importance of what is said at the closing worship, “We are children of God, loved beyond measure, sent to serve the world.”

“The Dominican Republic has only one season; they love flowers and enjoy having them everywhere. Prior to leaving Minnesota, I created the picture below center with our mission theme also written in Spanish. The homeowners, particularly the daughter and grandmother, loved it! May they always feel God’s love.” —Merle
