Bridge 33 is a teen band that performs a variety of genres with a special focus on Christian contemporary music. You may hear everything from their original songs to popular covers. They call St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie, Minnesota as home. Here are Bridge 33 members: •

Sabbath Rest
by Pastor Kaitlyn Forster Each summer has a tendency to begin with a deep sigh. The change in schedule and routine is welcomed and all of those projects, vacations, and fresh produce linger on the horizon as fruit, ripe and ready to be plucked. I find myself thinking about how time will slow down in the summer; and yet, by the end, it was just as busy as the rest of the year. If we aren’t careful, our daily routine can overpower us. It can captivate our time, drain our senses, and make us forget about the parts of life that really matter. While our work can be meaningful, we need intentional space to let our souls catch up with us. We need rest—sabbath—to sustain the energy needed for life. Even Moses, as he became weary leading the people through the desert, needed this reminder. God tells him, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” And Jesus, for whom anything was possible, did not preach on the best practices to get work done more efficiently or offer stress management techniques. Instead he tells his disciples, “Come to me all who toil and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Learn from me, Jesus invited, and you will find rest for your souls. Sabbath rest can only begin if we allow it to; if we change our schedules, and leave the concerns elsewhere. If you are anything like me, the rest that I need most and often refuse, is a break from technology. Phone. Computer. TV. So, I invite you this month to create time for a technological sabbath. Let the tech rest for two hours, six hours, 12 hours, or 24 hours. Some amount of time that will make a difference in your life. Surrender yourself to the moments of rest where you won’t be disturbed by the busy-ness of life. Allow yourself to find joy in being alive, aware of God’s creation, and give thanks for the blessings. Notice how you respond in its absence. Mark how you fill that precious time. Listen to how God speaks to you, like God spoke to Moses. Find peace and happiness as you allow the intentional rest to lead you into the world.

During your formative years, what was it like growing up in the Dakotas? Dad was a math/science teacher and school administrator and our stay-at-home mom was always there for us. Dad was always there as well, particularly because he was a teacher in all the public schools we attended. We enjoyed school with both of us having proficiency in mathematics. We lived in Jamestown, North Dakota, and Milbank and Watertown, South Dakota.

Upon our retirement from teaching and school administration in Milbank, we moved to the Twin Cities in 2010. We visited several churches, but when our parents passed away in 2015 and 2016, we chose Lord of Life for the memorial service and the columbarium as their final resting place. During that time, we were comforted by supportive staff members including caring and concerned pastors. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful. Although Lord of Life is a much larger congregation than what we’ve been used to, it doesn’t feel like that to us. We are very blessed to be a part of this inclusive congregation. Led by the Holy Spirit, we look forward to continuing our faith journey here for many years. It’s good to be home again.

background Pastor Carrie is a graduate of the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and has served urban, rural, and suburban churches in the Chicagoland area prior to her call in Jerusalem. She is the recipient of the 2013 Brave Preacher Award from the Beatitudes Society for her sermon on gun violence, written after the Newtown shootings in 2012. While in Illinois, Carrie was active with a local interfaith consortium, served on the Global Mission Committee of the Northern Illinois Synod, and was vice president of the McHenry County Mental Health Board. Pastor Carrie is married to the Rev. Dr. Robert Smith; they have two sons, Caleb and Zion.

Lord of Life is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA); Redeemer is in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL).2 The ELCJHL’s Arabic and English-speaking community of faithful Lutherans is the primary relationship through which the ELCA sees the situation in Palestine and Israel. Redeemer is also a member of The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), a global communion that has vital Jerusalem-area programs related to health, education, and humanitarian aid in the occupied Palestinian territories.
That mission continues at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem. Like the early apostles, it is a witness to God’s presence, grace, and love for all people in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ. Jesus’ Steps - Your Journey pilgrimage will be March 29-April 8, 2019, with optional extension to Petra, Jordan. One of the stops on the itinerary is to worship with Pastor Carrie’s congregation in Jerusalem. The ELCA, the ELCJHL and the LWF have a long history of developing and nurturing relationships among Jewish and Muslim communities in the Holy Land. In that land twenty centuries ago, the church was born. God filled the newborn church with the Holy Spirit and an abundance of gifts to carry out its mission to proclaim the kingdom of God to all the world. The ELCA is working for justice and peace in Palestine and Israel through Peace Not Walls. Through accompaniment, advocacy and awareness-raising, we promote dignity, full respect for human rights, healing, and reconciliation. With Palestinian Lutheran companions, we also accompany Palestinians and Israelis, Jews, Christians, and Muslims working together for peace with justice.

This past spring I was blessed to be a part of the Bulalo village well dedication. Access to clean water enhances the growth of every person, particularly the children, in the vicinity of a clean water source, helping build up a nation and our world at large.

The installation of water wells has helped to relieve suffering for thousands of men, women, and children who are affected daily by contaminated water. Without

urpassed Gift life-sustaining water, physical diseases, mental anguish, lost work or school time—and even death—plague villagers. So many people, in so many ways, will now thrive because of this new source of clean, safe water. The situation for life and health are desperate and often hopeless in villages without a healthy water source. However, the lives of our neighbors in these Ugandan villages radically change for the better with the gift of a well. These deep wells provide fresh, pure water for all villagers and surrounding community. They simply pump the handle on their new well to receive clear, clean water.
Health, safety, and an abundant life are no longer a dream for these children and their families—they are reality! Thanks to our congregation, the people of Bulalo have been blessed with an unsurpassed gift toward a healthier life while also providing hope for generations to come. Pastor Hillary Malo sums up the thankful hearts of villagers everywhere when he prays, “Let the favor and blessings of Almighty God be upon you for making a difference in the kingdom of God.”

by Pastor Chick Lane This month, I want to discuss God’s caring how you manage money. According to Dr. Powell, the Bible pays more attention to the importance of managing money than we might expect. As I have often said, the Bible’s teaching is that God is the owner of all we claim as our own. How we manage what belongs to God is important. There are two things to be avoided. First, we are to avoid hoarding money. The parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:15-21) tells of a man who has more money than he knows what to do with. His solution to this problem is not to use his possessions to do good. Rather, he decides to build larger barns. This behavior is condemned. Proper management of money is not about amassing as much as you possibly can. Second, we are to avoid squandering money. One point of the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:12-16) is certainly that the son’s wasting of his money is problematic. Proper money management is not about reckless spending.

Rather, and this should not be surprising to anyone, good money management is intentional and thoughtful. The Bible does commend those who are wise in their management of money. Matthew 25:14-30 tells the story of a man who entrusted money to each of three servants. Two managed the money carefully and returned more to the owner. One merely buried the money. The two were commended and the one was harshly criticized. The problem in our day with not intentionally and thoughtfully managing our money is debt. It is so easy to overcommit on items that burden us with long-term debt. These unwise financial decisions can so strap our financial situation that stress becomes a constant companion to any financial discussion and important things like generous giving become impossible.

God cares how you manage money because God wants you free from disabling stress and free to live your life with money in ways that mirror God’s generosity to you.

FAITH: a journey for all A book by former President Jimmy Carter, reviewed by Pastor Chick Lane
When a former president in his 90s, who regularly teaches a Bible class in his congregation, and volunteers each year with Habitat for Humanity, and still leads an institute committed to world peace and justice writes a book on faith—it seems like a book most Christians should read. When this former president regularly reads and quotes many of the most important Christian theologians of the past 100 years, he deserves to be taken seriously.

Such is the work of former President Carter in FAITH: a journey for all. I enjoyed the entire book, but it was the last two chapters that really captured me. In Chapter 5, What Faith Means to Me, he describes his Christian faith in deeply personal terms and uses very helpful examples. I provide one quote (Pages 88-89) to give an example of Carter’s depth and easy writing style, “I have come to realize that the apparent weaknesses of Christ are what make him precious and give him a quality of authenticity that is convincing.”

Chapter 6, Challenges to Faith, discusses the unique challenges to faith that are posed by life in 21st century America. In this chapter Carter’s Christian faith and his life in government come together in very helpful ways. He knows his faith as one who has lived his entire life in Christ. He knows the American political scene as only a former president can. These two perspectives merge in this chapter. It is very engaging. My description may make the book sound overly heavy. It isn’t. It is both readable and thought-provoking. I recommend it to you. Stay tuned for more book reviews shared in LifeTIMES on a periodic basis. Called to Lead Children, Youth, and Family ministry is looking for high school youth who feel called to lead. Lord of Life employs ministry assistants who provide leadership to some of the CYF programs. As a ministry assistant, the high schooler works directly with our After School Program (see below) that meets on almost every Tuesday from 2:30–6 pm. They also assist with church school Sunday mornings. For more information and to fill out an application, visit lordoflife.org/employment.
After School Program (ASP) Almost every Tuesday during the school year, ASP is designed to give first- to fifth-grade children faithbased after school programming. Time is divided between snack, quiet homework time, fun, and fellowship which includes service projects, science experiments and crafts. A Lord of Life bus picks up students from Meadow Ridge, Basswood and Rush Creek elementary schools and brings them to Lord of Life. Parent pick-up is at or before 6 pm. All children are invited to join in, however, busing is only provided for those attending the schools listed above. You are welcome to bring your child to church to participate.
