Heather Layne

Worship & Music

Lord of Life is eager to welcome Nashville recording artist/singer/songwriter Heather Layne on August 6 at all worship services. Heather will also share some of her personal story—and more music—at Celebrate Recovery on August 8.

ichthys:

2 August 2017

A simplistic fish drawing was used as a sign in the early Christian church for persecuted Christians to know and trust other believers. Want to learn more about your faith? Read Page 9 about the ichthys and Lifelong Learning opportunities available this fall.

Heather shares, I write out of my own life experiences … I also write songs about the lives of those around me. We all have a story. I believe music has a way of expressing thoughts and feelings of thousands of people at one time, in one song. For me, that’s what songwriting is all about; taking life’s ups and downs and creating a song to encourage someone else. We all need to know that we’re not alone. We all need to know that there is someone out there who understands. This would be a great weekend to invite someone to worship—and then come back for more on Tuesday at Celebrate Recovery!

My View Off the Deck by Pastor Dave McCarty Sunflowers in summertime make Minnesota beautiful, but sometimes we need to consciously, intentionally, look around to see and enjoy them. I’ve been very fortunate to spend extra time at the cabin this summer with a good share spent on the deck overlooking the lake. From that vantage point, I’ve seen a variety of birds forage in feeders, loons bob in the waves, blue herons and bald eagles abounding compared to a decade ago, and remnants of a black bear’s overnight escapades in the hummingbird feeder and the sunflower seeds. I’ve enjoyed time remembering the past, looking toward the future, and maybe most beneficially, enjoying the moment. I’ve been truly blessed with this time of reflection and renewal. I appreciate another season beyond summer, fall, winter, and spring. That season is the season of life, and there are several. I remember when the kids were young—we had control of when we went to the cabin and for how long. Then came baseball and soccer which was a real ‘kick’ but limited June/July cabin time to non-tournament weekends. With high school, August was for something that didn’t exist in my day: captain’s practice. Wonderful memories were followed by a season of transition. The kids went to college—independent, but yet oh, so dependent. They spread their wings; we let them fly ... and at times, fall. It was a season that seems to be a blur yet I see now how God was preparing them—and us—for this current season of life. Today, our children are in their summertime of life. We’re in our fall, which at the moment is my favorite because our grandson is in his spring season of life with everything new, fresh, and amazing. Seeing life through the eyes of a child paints a completely different picture of my view off the deck: suddenly a butterfly is as majestic as the eagle, a sunfish is as ferocious as the mighty musky. This summer, we saw all the seasons of life with family reunions which included a one-month-old all the way to Lisa’s 81-year-old mom! New memories were made and old stories of family no longer with us were retold. We smiled about silliness from those years because we knew they were a reminder of another season of life, another springtime, thanks to our baptismal promise.

The single source linking all seasons is our almighty and everpresent, loving God. Psalm 139 reminds us that God is with us always and forever. Reflecting on the seasons of life renews our spirit because we know that sunsets are followed by sunrises—thanks to Jesus, the risen Son. Amen. Pastor’s Article

© Mariana Lagartixa Shop

From the deck, I can see beautiful sunsets with the comforting confidence that the next day will bring an equally amazing sunrise. That’s the way it is with the seasons of life, too.

Ever wonder who are the people sitting next to you in the pew during worship—

Meet the Knellers by Michael Kneller

I grew up in Indiana and attended the University of South Carolina studying finance and international business. I was always fascinated by other cultures and in high school took a strong interest in the German language. This led to a career living in Germany, Switzerland, and Russia performing various finance and accounting roles. While abroad and on a business trip in Kiev, Ukraine, I met my wife Iryna; we later married and had our sons: Max and Sam. Iryna grew up in the Soviet Union during the time when organized religious activities, including baptism, were not permitted. She was secretly baptized in her parent’s home, but her parents do not recall the date. We married in Lausanne, Switzerland—first in a civil ceremony that allowed her to receive a Swiss residence permit. We subsequently celebrated a church wedding in an English church in Geneva with friends and family from all over the globe. We relocated to Medina, Minnesota, in March 2016 and have been frequenting Lord of Life since then. We are still adjusting back to American culture and are thoroughly enjoying becoming part of the local community. My parents are both retired Lutheran elementary school teachers. I attended a Lutheran elementary school in New Haven, Indiana (K-8). Having been a transient in different parts of the world for the last several years, we never really found a congegration to call home. After arriving in Medina, we visited several churches in the area and felt most comfortable with Lord of Life. We have greatly enjoyed the warmth of the congregation, the leadership Thank you to Michael, Iryna, Sam (7), and Max (4) in sharing this story with the Lord of Life family of faith. Behind a Glass Window by Katrina Bahen

I looked out my window last night And there he sat all alone I wondered what he was thinking Behind the glass in a nursing home Sitting in a wheelchair Staring straight ahead I wondered what he was thinking Did he wish he was dead? Or was this man happy and content With the past decisions he had made I wondered what he was thinking Are there things he would trade? Then I thought about my own life And what if I ended up in his chair Behind a glass window Of a nursing home somewhere Would I be happy with the choices I had made Or wishing I’d done things differently I wondered what I would be thinking And if I would like the person I called me As I watched him sitting there I watched my own life go by I wondered what I would be thinking If I knew it was my time to die I closed my blinds Wiping away a single tear I knew what I was thinking I did not need a mirror Is the person I am today The person I want to know then I asked myself a few more questions About how I wanted my life to end

Poetry by Katrina Bahen

I didn’t want to spend it Chasing money or buying time I asked myself a few more questions To make sure I was done lying Telling myself a life well lived Is about prosperity and goals When actually it is about family And laughter and little toes

6 August 2017

From my chair someday Will I look back and be sad Or will I have filled my life with purpose And be joyful, thankful, and glad I didn’t have to wonder anymore I knew the answers in my heart To make tomorrow’s future Today I had to start A message for everyone regardless of age—thank you, Katrina Bahen, for sharing poetry from your heart.

Lord of Life Weekly Giving — June 2017 $80,000

‘Generous’ or ‘Faithful’ by Pastor Chick Lane

“If God owns everything, how can we call ourselves generous when we give things away? Can I be generous when I give something away that doesn’t belong to me?” This question was asked of me recently as I led a workshop at a stewardship conference. As I often do, I had been talking about the importance of understanding that everything we ‘have’ really belongs to God. I said, “One of the things God wants us to do with that which God has entrusted into our care is to give generously so God’s work can be done in the world.”

Council Updates Lord of Life is blessed with a council of twelve members who assist with leadership and congregational decisions. At their May meeting, new officers were elected: President Jerry Bergstrom, Vice President Becky Korman, and Secretary Melissa (Missy) Benson. Three new members have joined the council: Chris Petersen, Pat Smuda-Behr, and Chris Tollefson. We will formally welcome and introduce these council members in future issues of LifeTIMES. They join the six other members: Adam Bunge, Rachel Ross, Diane Sjolander, Joy Todd, Tom Wilson, and Michael Yu. Thank you to outgoing President Merle Waldron, Vice President Larry Pivec, and Secretary Gwen Denninger who each served two terms on the council. We are grateful for their commitment and service to Lord of Life.

meetings, visit lordoflife.org/council.

I do believe it is important for us to recognize the biblical teaching that everything belongs to God. I do believe it is important for us to respond to God’s call to give significantly from what God has entrusted into our care for the good of the world around us. But is generous the right word? Lately, I’ve been thinking about the word faithful as a better word. I’m not sure if I can be generous with something that belongs to someone else. I am sure I can be faithful with it. I can use it the way the owner wants me to use it and has commanded me to use it. We often talk about being faithful in many aspects of our lives. What if we more consciously added our use of money to that list of things? What would it look like in your life if you made conscious money decisions by asking yourself this question, Is this faithful to God the owner? When you give money away, when you save money, when you spend money—ask yourself this simple question, Is this faithful? For more information about giving, direct debit, gift acceptance policy and more at Lord of Life, visit lordoflife.org/give. Thank you for your financial support.

One woman’s response was to ask the question quoted above. My first response was to look at her and say, “Good question.” After a moment of thought, my second response was to say, “Very good question.” The group talked about her question that day, and I have thought about the question quite often since.

A Reflection from Uganda—

Beatrice

Her skin was so very black, yet with soapy water it glistened like a midnight blue. How many miles had those calloused feet taken her ... walking to carry water to cook and to clean, working in the fields for her family’s food, pacing back and forth while soothing a sick child. Twenty widows were selected from the village of Sesera, Uganda, to be honored and pampered with a ‘spa day.’ Sitting in a circle under a tall tree, these women were treated with dignity, respect, and love. Basins were filled with bubble bath and their feet soaked while enjoying a soft drink with biscuits. Along with other missionaries, we sang several African spiritual folk songs praising God. Bonnie Dirks, Uganda Ministry Leader Kent Dirks’ mother, honored the women with a poignant message of encouragement and hope; Lord of Life missionary Char Wiest also shared thoughtful, inspirational words. My widow’s name was Beatrice. I washed her feet, toes, and shins—which were really nothing more than bone. After towel drying, I massaged her legs, ankles, toes, and hands with petroleum jelly. Beatrice selected a glittery peach-colored nail polish and a lovely pale pink lipstick. I painted her toenails and fingernails. I applied her lipstick and arranged a floral scarf around her neck. Beatrice is a strong and beautiful woman. Although English is one of Uganda’s official languages, we did not communicate verbally; our eyes simply met quite often with smiles. Throughout the experience, I prayed silently for Beatrice with thanks to God for her life and her strength. I do not know her age; it is difficult for me to guess the ages of Africans—especially women. Their lives are so very difficult without acknowledgement or appreciation. In such a male-dominated culture of Uganda, it was particularly significant that many of the missionaries were men—Africans and Americans—honoring the women in plain sight of other villagers. I was just one who felt privileged to serve and honor Beatrice. —Bev Mello If you sense the Holy Spirit’s call to action in serving on a mission, you are encouraged to learn more during One Mission One World weekend,

What is an “ichthys” anyway?

You may have noticed this symbol in Lord of Life’s narthex carpeting. Many Christians may wear the fish symbol as a lapel pin. You’ll even see this symbol of Christianity on vehicles as if it is a brand such as Ford or Chevy. How did it get started?

<><

<>< <>< <><

<><

<><

Also, the word ‘fish’ in Greek is ichthys (also spelled ichthus) or ΙΧΘΥΣ and is an acrostic for Iota (Jesus), Christos (Christ or the anointed), Theta (God’s), Upsilon (Son), and Sigma (Savior).

<><

One would use a stick or finger or edge of sandal in the dust on the ground making one of the two lines. Then the other person would fill in the second line. With this “password protection,” now they safely shared their faith, next location for worship, news of Christian brothers or sisters, and so on. The symbol has endured as a legacy for believers to know and recognize one another.

In first century Rome, Christians were being persecuted when gathering or worshiping—their meetings needed to be secretive. They had to be careful as if their lives depended on it, because they did!

Good Samaritans at Good Samaritan by Georgia Helvick Thanks to generous financial and spiritual support from Lord of Life and its volunteers who have servant hearts, New Hope’s Ambassador-Good Samaritan care center gave glory to God in a chapel celebration.

This past winter, their regular Sunday worship service was led for the last time by dedicated servant of God, Ina Barton (at right). Chaplain Paul Anderson was introduced as their new chaplain volunteer. It was a beautiful service involving many including Ina, Ann Little, me, volunteers from Lord of Life, along with musician Christine Mielke. After worship on Sunday, February 19, AmbassadorGood Samaritan held a chapel celebration event focused on: •

dedicating new stained glass windows—a successful $10,000 fundraising project (half-funded by Lord of Life benevolence monies)

•

celebrating the spiritual leadership, volunteer service, and retirement of Advisory Board Member Ina Barton, who has been leading the third Sunday worship service for four years

•

honoring donors who made the chapel project possible

About 50 residents, donors, volunteers, family, and friends attended this lovely event. It was beautifully led by Good Samaritan-Ambassador’s Chaplain Dean Franz with a warm welcome from Administrator Marie Barta. Several board volunteers helped serve coffee, punch, donuts, and cupcakes to residents and donors. There are wonderful things happening thanks to the support from Lord of Life and its volunteers! It truly was a day filled with gratitude and celebration. For more information about this ministry and its volunteer opportunities, visit lordoflife.org/goodsamaritan.
