L5 Class Descriptions

Session 1: Week of September 14-Week of October 12

SUNDAY 8:30 am The Good, Bad, & Beautiful—Right Out of the Bible, Gretchen Peel So, you may not have been to a Bible study class for a while, or perhaps ever. This is a good one for you, the adult who wants to learn in an easy, informal way. You can just listen or you can join in the conversation about some interesting people. So, who are these people in the Bible? Sometimes they were brave, sometimes frightened. Sometimes they made good choices, sometimes they didn’t. They were bold, meek, honest, dishonest, faithful, unfaithful, and altogether human. Let’s talk about ten of them—some you may know and others you haven’t met yet. We’ll hear their story, their back story, and the “what happened next?” We’ll look at timelines, maps, and some art. And we’ll find that all ten have one thing in common. They all play an important role in God’s plan of salvation for the world. We will learn about their admirable, and not so admirable, qualities and what God accomplishes through them. They are quite the characters! 9:45 am Daniel, Much More Than Surviving the Lion’s Den Pastor Donna Rohrer There are familiar stories, history, visions and apocalyptic literature in Daniel. It is a book that we will work our way through to understand more of God’s direction for the Jewish people who were being encouraged to follow the Hellenistic ways rather than stay faithful to the One True God. There is encouragement for us to stand faithful under pressure.

9:45 am Connecting School & Home: Forging a Cooperative Relationship For Your Child, Ty Thayer Students succeed best when the adults in their lives work together in cooperation, which can prove to be challenging even in the best of circumstances. Differing goals, experiences, and perspectives can sometimes make it difficult to form a team approach between parents and their child’s school. This class will focus on developing strategies to improve a school and home partnership with each week designed to look at a specific topic. We will discuss themes ranging from helping your school get to know your child as a whole person, building a relationship with your child’s teacher, managing social dynamics, understanding academic assessments, sharing your family culture with the school, and balancing the realities of school, activities, and faith life.

11 am Prayer School, Pastor Karen Sue Greimel with Larry & Cynthia Pivec Have you ever thought God was outside your network? Do you find yourself asking God, “Can you hear me now?” If you want to change your “prayer plan” and get a better connection, have we got a plan for you! Prayer School offers a hands-on class for everyone who desires to know God better and hear Him more clearly. Come for one 5-week session or as many sessions as you’d like, as all of the classes will be different.

11 am As Families Grow Older, Lisa Toms As Families Grow Older is designed to assist older adults, families/family caregivers and elder care professionals in planning and providing loving care for elderly members as they grow older. As Families Grow Older is composed of five weekly modules that address important issues in aging including family dynamics, care giving, health issues, living arrangements, and financial and legal concerns.

MONDAY AT 7 PM Daniel, Much More Than Surviving the Lion’s Den, Pastor Donna Rohrer There are familiar stories, history, visions and apocalyptic literature in Daniel. God’s power provides the skilled direction for you to choose a second half of life that is filled with possibility, opportunity and most of all growth. This class guides you in the transformational midlife journey, toward the woman you are called to be for the second half of life.

8:30 am Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, Holy Guacamole! Pastor Donna Rohrer We talk about the Holy Spirit as part of the Triune God. But not very much. Using the scriptures, the creeds, and other helps—let’s find out how important the Spirit is in our lives.

9:45 am Judges, Generals, and Leadership, Pastor Donna Rohrer After 40 years in the wilderness, the Children of Israel need leadership. God raises people with the gifts they need to a position of leadership. (Even a woman!) We will read the book of Judges and see how, with God’s help, the Children of Israel became a nation, under God, that other nations noticed.

9:45 am Learning How to Truly Know and Love Yourself and Others—The Liberating Power of the Enneagram, Pastor Laura Duffee Snyder Who am I? And who am I in relation to others? How can I embrace who I really am? How can I truly be happy? Learn about yourself through the power of the Enneagram personality inventory. The Enneagram is a psychological system that goes back centuries, but is used in workplaces, with staff and community relations, and in faith communities. If you want to know why you do and say the things that you do, and want to have a good laugh while learning, come and join us for this class, and learn what your personality type is. Then learn what your type means for your well-being and how you relate to others. Learn how to maximize your strengths, and how to embrace and love yourself, as well as others. This fun class is great for anyone—for beginners or those of you who are life-long learners!

Come for one 5-week session or as many sessions as you’d like, as all of the classes will be different.

11 am Discover the Bible, Renae Larson Sometimes people are afraid to attend a Bible class because they feel inadequate and don’t want to be embarrassed by their lack of knowledge. This five-week series is basic and designed for anyone who wants to know more about the Bible. If you’ve had very little instruction and no Bible background or if you haven’t studied the Bible in years and want to refresh your memory, this is the class for you. We use a curriculum developed by Ginny Wheeler of Community Church of Joy in Glendale, Arizona. You’ll learn how the Bible is organized or “put together,” some Bible history, how to find the verses in various passages and other Bible “helps.” The goal is for each person who takes the class to feel comfortable and enthusiastic about studying the Bible and hopefully will want to learn more.

MONDAY AT 7 PM Judges, Generals, and Leadership, Pastor Donna Rohrer After 40 years in the wilderness, the Children of Israel need leadership. God raises people with the gifts they need to a position of leadership. (Even a woman!) We will read the book of Judges and see how, with God’s help, the Children of Israel became a nation, under God, that other nations noticed.

Great responses from everyone who took this class previously; very helpful video and conversation.

A Bible Story: As You Like It, Ina Barton The Apostle Paul writes: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4 NIV) We’ll read and discuss five Biblical stories—four to be selected by the class at the first session—and their relevance to God’s people living in the 21st century. We’ll discover what each story tells us about God, discover what the story tells us about human beings and their responses, and determine the essence of the divine message. We’ll respond to this question: What spiritual insights does this story have for me and how may I apply those to my faith journey? The goal is to discuss Bible stories that are meaningful and important to the participants and to strengthen our commitment to the Christian faith by sharing spiritual insights. The first class session will explore the Elijah story (1 Kings 19).

SUNDAY 8:30 am Wiser Women: God’s Power in Second Half “U” (new), Joan Freeberg WOMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE - There is so much to learn about God’s power in this exciting new frontier of life! God’s creative activity in the world allows us to live longer and healthier lives. In this class we will examine what it means to be part of the new movement to redefine age as potential for carrying out God’s mission in the world. How is God calling you in the second half of life? 9:45 am The Compassionate Christ in the Gospel of Luke 1 Pastor Donna Rohrer We will listen to the words of Luke as we travel with Jesus to Jerusalem. Come and share in the joy!

9:45 am Quiet Time—Getting to Know God More Intimately, Sheryl Britsch We spend time with family and friends to develop and deepen those relationships. How do we build a relationship with God? Scripture says that Jesus would often withdraw to a quiet place to have time with the Father. This class will explore what quiet time is, various ways to approach it, and benefits from spending time with God and getting to know him more intimately.

11 am Prayer School, Pastor Karen Sue Greimel with Larry & Cynthia Pivec Have you ever thought God was outside your network? Body & Soul Yoga, Audrey Johnson Come and enjoy an hour of yoga! One of the best gifts you can give God and others is to be the best you can be; body and soul. We will focus on breathing, stretching, holding poses, core and relaxation. We will use our breath to come within, letting go of judgment and competition of ourselves and others, stretching to accept where we are and what we can do, holding poses to parallel the tough things in life and through all, reminding us that God will help us. We will also offer prayer in our movements; taking time to be still.

WEDNESDAY AT 6:30 PM Made to Crave, Michelle Welinski “All God’s girls have issues. All of us. Every single one of us. We haul around a bucketload of issues. There are painfully thin women weighted down spiritually and emotionally by feelings of defeat the same as women many sizes larger than them.” Join the discussion on Made to Crave, written by Lysa Terkeurst, as we learn about ourselves and our need for additional spiritual empowerment. There is a spiritual battle going on in our lives. When tempted by food choices, learn to draw on scripture to fill those longings. Food was never meant to fulfill the deepest places of our hearts reserved for God alone. This is not a ‘diet discussion’ rather a spiritual growth journey. Each week we will watch a video clip, and talk about the chapters we read during the week and share personal insights. The book will be available for purchase in Reflections of Faith as well as the optional study guide.

Meet the L5 Instructors

Ina Barton Adult Confirmation/ Lutheranism, A Bible Story: As You Like It I, like all human beings, am a mixture of happy and sad, traditional and contemporary, earthy and spiritual. Sometimes, to the wonderment of my family, I have even been known to behave in a “rowdy” way. Salient points about the “I/me” that interacts with the world are these: I am an Older Wiser Lutheran - yes, an OWL, by the grace of God; a widowed wife who misses the love of her life in a most acute fashion; mother of three beautiful and compassionate daughters; grandmother of five wonderful and caring grandchildren; a graduate of Luther Seminary with a Master of Arts in Church History/Theology. Most of all, through God’s gift of faith, I know that I am a ransomed and redeemed sinner created for eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Because of God’s gracious outpouring of divine love in my life, I desire to proclaim and share that love with all. Thanks be to God! Sheryl Britsch Quiet Time: Getting to Know God More Intimately Participating in various Lord of Life ministries and attending several L5 courses has helped me to deepen my faith. Through this journey, I continue to be drawn to, and am intrigued by, ways to spend time with God. I look forward to sharing my insights and learning from others about quiet time and having a closer relationship with God.

Joan Freeberg Wiser Women Courses

Pastor Karen Sue Greimel Prayer School

I am a wife, mom, teacher and accountant, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to lead L5 courses again this year. Author Joyce Rupp wrote the following words in her book on midlife spirituality, Dear Heart, Come Home— “I am searching for some unknown treasure, hidden in the field of life, to be found only with your skilled direction, God. It must be you who stirs me so, who urges me along.” I quote these words here because they beautifully summarize so many conversations I have been part of with midlife women. God’s urging and those conversations provide the direction for the Wiser Women courses.

My husband and I and our three daughters have been members at Lord of Life for over 20 years. I have served in a number of ministries over the years and graduated from the Masters Institute Seminary with a Masters of Divinity in May 2011. I joined the Lord of Life staff in August 2011 and have been blessed with a strong desire to walk with others through life’s challenges. My passion is for them to grow in their personal relationship with God. Prayer is one of the most important ways we can know the Lord, His love, healing, strength and will for our lives. It is a privilege and pure joy to pray with others.

Pastor Karen Geisendorfer-Lindgren Adult Confirmation/Lutheranism I oversee the Adult Ministries at Lord of Life. One of the things I enjoy most in ministry is exploring matters of faith with people and deepening our understanding of why we believe what we believe as Lutheran Christians. Pastor Karen Geisendorfer-Lindgren and Pastor Peter GeisendorferLindgren The Marriage Course We met in high school (Minnehaha Academy) in 1971…10 years later we were married. And at this point we have been married for over 33 years. We have both been pastors since 1983. We are very interested in supporting marriages - ours and yours! We hope you will join us as together we celebrate marriage.

Audrey Johnson Body & Soul Yoga Always interested in helping others be healthy, I have a Bachelor of Science in Public Health Dental Hygiene, 200RYT Yoga and Mat Pilates certificates. I have worked in the fitness industry for 31 years as a volunteer or teacher at the YMCA and Lifetime Fitness. I joined Lord of Life 27 years ago; first inspired by movement and prayer in church with Body and Soul, volunteering with Claudia Busch in Dance Aerobics with Bible study after class. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to incorporate Yoga movements and prayer. Renae Larson Discover the Bible Renae Larson is my name and teaching was my career for 34 years, most recently in the Mounds View School District. I was fortunate to have many experiences in both classroom and

faith formation special education settings. As a teacher on special assignments for four years while working on a joint project with the U of M. I did teacher in-service training. Since retiring I’ve enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, reading books, playing piano, and participating in activities at Lord of Life. I’ve been a member here for 10 years and I’m active with OWLs activities, Word for Women events and a worship team. I taught the Discover the Bible class in the first year of L5 and I’m eager to do it again. The Bible is filled with so many treasures and this class encourages us to discover them and implement them into our lives. Pastor David Lippitt Forgiveness: A Pathway to Freedom Rev. Dr. David Lippitt graduated from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, in 1975. He served on the staff of Lord of Life from 1993-2001 and also 2005-2014, retiring in May. During those years, Pastor David has taught many classes. In addition to his pastoral training and work, he has an M.S. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Ph.D. in Psychology. Pastor David also is involved in private practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist in Minnesota. He brings immense knowledge, enthusiasm and joy to his teaching. Karen Nelson, Administrative Assistant, Adult Ministries Parenting Teens My husband Dale and I have been members of Lord of Life since 1987. We have two children; Emma is 24 and Jeffrey is 20. I have worked in Adult Ministries since 2006 and love being a part of all the excitement within Adult Ministries. I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, walking, taking classes at church, and swim meets. I am excited to lead the Parenting Teens class. There are so

many wonderful classes to choose from, I hope everyone will take at least one! Gretchen Peel The Good, Bad, & Beautiful—Right Out of the Bible I have been a Lord of Life member since 1978 when the first worship service was held in the gym of Cedar Island Elementary. My husband and I have two adult children, a son-in-law, and a Dachshund named Moe. I spent 40 years as a teacher and administrator in the Osseo School District, retiring after 18 years as an elementary school principal. My retirement goals include building a deeper faith and a stronger relationship with God. My action plan included taking L5 classes. I took six classes and loved them! I met wonderful people, learned and laughed a lot, cried a little, and made progress on those goals. Now I have been called (literally) to share the L5 experience with others. With God’s guidance, we will learn and laugh together. Larry & Cynthia Pivec Prayer School The Pivecs feel blessed in marriage and by their wonderful daughter, Lindsay. They have been members of Lord of Life for many years and have been involved with the Prayer School since the first year of L5. Cynthia has been involved in a supportive role and now as a teacher, inspired by the way participants have grown in their relationship with each other and with God. God got Larry’s attention (a burning bush type of encounter) and ever since then Larry has longed to know who this amazing God is and why He cares for someone like him. Cynthia & Larry have taken many

classes on prayer over the past 8 years and every time, walk away desiring an even closer connection to God. They look forward to sharing their passion for God and prayer with others who wish to know God more fully. Pastor Donna Rohrer Daniel, Judges, Holy Spirit, Islam, Luke I love the Lord! I love life! I love teaching! I love to laugh! And I love Lord of Life's L5! I am so blessed to be able to share insights into the scripture in these classes. In 2015, it will be 20 years of me being an ordained pastor. What an honor that the Spirit keeps finding ways for me to tell, sing, share, and show others that Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Pastor Laura Duffee Snyder Learning How to Truly Know and Love Yourself and Others— The Liberating Power of the Enneagram Laura grew up nearby in Plymouth. She spent four years at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota earning her Bachelor’s Degree and singing in the Concordia Choir. Laura followed her heart’s call into pastoral ministry and attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul. Laura has served as a congregational pastor for 12 years in the metro area and is now serving as hospital chaplain at Maple Grove Hospital. Laura has a deep love for parish ministry and for chaplaincy and rejoices in the opportunity to care for God’s people. She also volunteers with the landing teen ministry of

Michelle Welinski, Director of Pastoral Care, Missions, Ministries Made to Crave I have been a member of Lord of Life since 1985 and absolutely love being part of this growing faith community. People are always surprised to learn that I live in Elk River and drive “all the way to Maple Grove.” My standard line is “I don’t think twice about driving to Ridgedale to shop, why would I think twice about driving in to work and worship at a great church!” I’ve been married for 38 years and have 3 children and 4 fun grandchildren. I love the rituals and traditions that

have been passed down to me and now I have the joy of passing them on to my grandchildren. In my spare time I like to scrapbook, read, and laugh with my friends from Word for Women. I have even been known to take a nap! Pastoral Intern Taylor Wilson Spiritual Practices: Finding the Holy in the Midst of Chaos Hey! I’m Taylor Wilson, and I serve as pastoral intern at Lord of Life. I’m currently pursuing my Master of Divinity degree at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. I have the opportunity to serve and learn at Lord of Life for three years, which I’m excited about! My wife, Julie, is also on staff at Lord of Life as an associate in ministry, focused on lower elementary education. Prior to pursuing my call to ordained ministry, I served as youth and family minister at Transfiguration Lutheran in Bloomington, Minnesota for five years. I’ve also written and performed original music, led worship, and have been the speaker at various Lutheran churches, camps and youth events. I enjoy riding my motorcycle, relaxing at the cabin, exploring new places with my wife, and strumming the guitar.

Proverbs 23:7: For as he thinks in his heart, so he is—

Take Captive Every Thought by Pastor Karen Sue Greimel

M

y grandma used to say to me, “Karen Sue, whatever you focus on, you become.” I thought this meant that if I focused on being an amazing singer I would become one. That’s close to what she meant, but thoughts influence our behavior in the here and now too. If I start to think about taco chips and salsa, I soon find myself in the car on my way to the restaurant or the nearest grocery store. My thoughts stir my emotions and desires and soon my behavior follows. I read that when we experience problems, we often do not realize that we are actually creating them by what we are choosing to think about. This led me to “think about” what I’m “thinking about.” What thoughts am I feeding myself? Negative thoughts equal negative emotions and behavior. Instead of looking at the hole, look at the donut. Jesus knew we might battle this from time to time and offers a solution. We are reminded in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to “demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” It’s important to take a minute in our day and “think about” what we are thinking about. Are these the thoughts you should take captive and give over to Christ? No matter what our circumstances, we can always think about and choose to focus on God’s grace and give thanks for the gift of Jesus. We can think about what we do have in Christ. Jesus wants our minds to be filled with positive, loving, and healthy thoughts. Peace to you, Pastor Karen Sue

Fort Snelling

O

n June 19, the OWLs started out in heavy rain to visit historic Fort Snelling. In the visitor center, they saw a very interesting video about the fort, established in 1819, and its history during the fur trade, Civil War, U.S.Dakota War of 1862, and other events. Some OWLs toured Fort Snelling with a guide, others wandered and watched a cannon being shot and viewed the various rebuilt A Fort Snelling ‘soldier’ and Bonnie Hill quarters, school, hospital, and towers. Costumed guides were available to explain the various areas. Luckily the rain stopped and though it was very windy, the OWLs enjoyed visiting this well-maintained site vital to Minnesota’s history.

A Sincere Thank You by Denny & LaVerne Kinvig

thank you is in order to the Lord of Life congregation and friends who have been so generous with donations to Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). These donations purchase a nutritious food supplement which feeds children in need around the world. Thank you to all the volunteers who take time to pack at the Coon Rapids site: adults, families, youth, OWLs, and countless others for their helping hands. Thank you for the many prayers and the Lord of Life benevolence team who help FMSC when the need is so great. God’s children are grateful and we are grateful for this ministry at Lord of Life.

W

hat is Source MN? For over 30 years, Source MN has reached out to those youth who are homeless and at-risk providing relationships, transitional housing, and a safe environment. This urban ministry, located near 26th and Nicollet avenues, began a new ministry a few years ago to women coming out of sex trafficking by providing clothing and a foodshelf. How has Lord of Life been involved at Source MN? Nearly all of our pastors have visited their campus of buildings. The Source MN director and his wife have spoken at both the men’s quarterly breakfast and Word for Women. In addition, this past June is the fourth summer when Summer Stretch kids came to help with tasks, clean-up, and fellowship. On average, there have been 100 youth from Lord of Life at Source MN each summer! How can you help? Every month Lord of Lifers prepare a home-cooked meal served at Source MN. Also served and received are all kinds of smiles from residents, staff, and us as we get to know the residents and their stories. You are encouraged to be a part of this ministry!

ELCA Malaria Campaign Preventable. Treatable. Now.

K

ids in Lord of Life summer programs are using their hands for God’s work. They are raising money to provide insecticide-treated mosquito nests and education to protect families in Africa from malaria.

Why us? Lutheran churches in Africa aren’t just places of worship. They are at the center of community life. That’s what makes church the best place for malaria education, prevention, and care. And that’s what makes us uniquely positioned to do this work. We have a proven track record and long history of providing life-saving health care, and we understand the larger connections to hunger and poverty. All it takes is $10 to train and protect a family. Donation envelopes and information are available at the display near the main office. Our goal is $2,500 to provide nets and education for 250 families.
