Team Duhawk

Hello from TEAM DUHAWK! The Department of Athletics is now in the third year with Team Duhawk, and after two years, we continue to be blessed with the support of so many passionate fans and families. In 2012-13 we are excited to continue this tradition. Team Duhawk is the “team behind the teams.” Team Duhawk supports the mission of the Loras College Department of Athletics and provides our student-athletes with the resources they need to succeed in and out of the classroom. Your gift will provide opportunities for all student-athletes to train and compete at the highest levels, while also growing intellectually, spiritually, and personally. The first $25 of your gift will benefit the Team Duhawk General Athletic Fund, which supports all 22 varsity sports, the athletic training department, the spirit squad, and our athletic facilities. Any additional amount may be designated to an area of your choice. Thank you for your past support and for considering joining today! Sincerely,

Chuck Yrigoyen IIAC Commissioner

Founded in 1923 and recognized as one of the top NCAA III leagues in the nation, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consists of nine private, liberal arts institutions. The IIAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate championships in men’s and women’s sports. The IIAC has proven to be one of the nation’s most dominant conferences, annually having many of its teams finish highly at the NCAA III national level.

IIAC MISSION STATEMENT

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) consists of independent, regionally accredited, residential four-year, liberal arts colleges that share common academic philosophies and goals and that place primary emphasis on the academic progress of students. To that end the athletic programs of IIAC member institutions facilitate the intellectual, spiritual and physical development of all students, whether as participants or spectators. Members of the IIAC place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience of our student-athletes and their successful completion of it. Therefore, the member colleges seek to provide an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of our student-athletes’ educational experience. In that vein, intercollegiate competition is provided by the IIAC to develop participants’ skills in selfdiscipline, teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and ethical conduct; it is not provided primarily to serve the entertainment needs of spectators nor the talent needs of professional sports teams. Student-athletes in the IIAC should experience growth of physical and mental skills as well as an appreciation for the rewards of adequate preparation and superior performance. They also should learn to work and play with others who are unlike themselves but who are talented and productive persons. They also should experience the pride of representing an organization, not just themselves, and the responsibility of proper conduct that comes with it. But primarily, they should have the opportunity to excel in their academic work as well as in their athletic endeavors; competitive events and practice sessions will be scheduled to minimize the potential conflict between academic and athletic excellence. In sum, athletic competition in the IIAC serves to encourage our students to participate in activities beyond the classroom, to enhance skills helpful to career success, and to assist them in their general development as human beings.

Baseball Mentoring Program Duhawks Continue Mentor Role at Prescott Elementary School The Loras College baseball team has once again partnered with the students at Prescott Elementary in 2012-13. Prescott physical education teacher and Loras assistant baseball coach Kory Tuescher continues to help bring the two groups together. “The Prescott students and Loras College student-athletes are growing together in this partnership,” Tuescher said. “The Loras guys continue to be good examples for our students at Prescott and the Prescott students continue to learn and grow with their guidance.” This year marks the tenth year of the partnership between the groups. The time spent at Prescott by the Loras student-athletes usually includes time in the classroom and joining the children for short one-on-one work. “I’m proud of our guys for taking advantage of the great opportunity Coach Tuescher has given them. It’s great,” said Head Coach Carl Tebon. “They are making memories every time they go down to Prescott and they’ll carry those memories with them for the rest of their lives.” The Prescott students will once again make a trip to Petrakis Park for a Duhawks game this spring. This year’s game will be on April 9 versus University of Dubuque.

2012-2013 Media Guide

2013 Baseball Season Preview Duhawks look to improve win total for fourth straight year While snow continues to fall in Iowa, the Loras College Baseball team has been hard at work inside the Graber Sports Center in preparation for their 2013 season. Head Coach Carl Tebon and company look to return the team to glory once again after a 22-18 2012 season. After graduating three key seniors in Travis Olson, Austin Safranski and Spencer Radabaugh, the Duhawks will lean on some underclassmen to help shoulder the load, both in the field and in the rotation. Senior Ben Cottrell returns to the Duhawks this year and will be expected to be the ace of the rotation. Last year, Cottrell went 4-4 with a 2.87 ERA, striking out 39 batters in 59 2/3 innings. As the only senior in the starting rotation, expect Cottrell to rack up a lot of innings, especially with the new format for Iowa Conference play. In previous years, teams would play a three game series, consisting of one nine inning game and two seven inning games. Starting this year, teams will play four game series, including two nine inning games and two seven inning games. This places a heavy burden on each team to have four quality starters that they can throw out there over the course of a series. “With the four games series, every game will be big for us this year,” Tebon said. In the lineup, Loras returns many key contributors from last year’s team. Senior Mike Canevello will patrol the outfield for the Duhawks and early reports indicate that he will serve as the leadoff batter as well. Canevello posted a .389 On Base Percentage in 2012, including 29 hits and 23 walks. He will need to continue that type of pace in 2013 in order for the Duhawks to have success. With the departure of some starters from 2012, comes with it the opportunity for some new faces to step up into every day starter roles. Freshman Pat Walsh (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) will find plenty of time both at first base and toeing the rubber for the Duhawks. Also, look for sophomore Danny Fahlgren to assume the primary role behind the plate after starting in 12 games last year. “I believe our pitching and defense should be very strong this year if we can score we should have a very good season…it will come down to winning the one run ball games,” Tebon added. The Duhawks will kick off Iowa Conference play on March 22 when they travel to Pella, Iowa and face off against the Central College Dutch. They will host Monmouth College for their home opener on March 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Petrakis Park.

Athletic and Wellness Center

The construction of the 74,189 square-foot athletic and wellness facility began in June 2006 and opened in November 2007. This newest structural addition to our campus includes: — A basketball/volleyball arena with maximum traditional seating for 1,732 spectators. The same venue for concerts/speakers provides seating capacity between 2,289 and 2,913. — A two-level fitness center overlooking lower campus provides 9,500 square-feet of strength and conditioning and cardiovascular space. — The locker room facilities support Loras students, visitors and comprehensive student-athlete needs. In addition, there are coaches’ offices, a concessions/retail area, hospitality area, an athletic training room and storage.
