1 - GARDEN ROOM

My first ever project was a garden room. We were assigned to create a proposal for a garden room in our back gardens. Our final designs had to be equal to or less than 25m², made of a timber structure and achieve passive house standards. The picture on the left is a site plan of my house and the garden that I would design for. I challenged myself to maintain as much of the lawn as I could in this project, while creating both a shed and a garden room space together in one building.

One of my main aims with the garden room was to provide as much light into the space as possible. The purpose of the garden room was to have a separate space to study, relax and enjoy the garden. It was designed to make you feel like you were outside in nature, rather than in a closed space. I attempted to achieve that by adding glass doors and roof windows. My biggest inspiration was my dad. He has always wanted a sun room, so I aimed to provide that with a pyramidal glass roof and large windows on each side of the garden room.

Hand Drawn Image of A Timber Frame Wall on a Concrete Raft Foundation I had limited prior knowledge of technical details prior to this course. The above sketch was one of my first attempts at detail work. I enjoyed it a lot more than I anticipated, and this project made me realise and appreciate how many different components are in a wall to create a warm, secure building that people can enjoy.

Timber Frame Model of Garden Room

The two pictures here display the timber model that we had to complete as part of the assignment. It is a study of timber frame construction. This part really helped bring the garden room to life for me. Throughout this project, I learned many fundamental aspects of architectural technology that motivated me further and opened my eyes as to how much work goes into construction that ends up getting hidden.

2 – SEMI-DETACHED HOUSE

Estate Site Plan in AutoCAD My second major project revolved around a semi-detached house in an estate development in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath. The primary objective was to gain an understanding about residential construction and improve our knowledge around the TGD regulations. The above image is a site plan that I produced in AutoCAD. This was one of my first times using the software and I learned a lot from the experience.

We were tasked with completing planning drawings and general arrangement drawings in Revit, including specification and drainage systems. The image on the left is a planning application drawing. One of the biggest challenges that I encountered during this phase was the drainage and how it operated. This was my first attempt at including a drainage system. There were many more attempts after until I finally settled on the one seen in my general arrangement drawings.

Planning Permission Ground Floor Plan in Revit

Once our planning application drawings were completed, we were tasked with creating general arrangement drawings. They had to include more specific specifications, sections and a demonstration of compliance with TGD regulations. This project enlightened me on the process that must be carried out when constructing a building and how many drawings and alterations would occur before and during the construction of the building.

2 – SEMI-DETACHED HOUSE

3D House Model Made of Card

The technical details were crucial in this project. We learned how to calculate U-values to figure out the buildup of a cavity wall, as seen in the picture on the left. I learned how important air tightness and waterproofing are when it comes to any building. I also realised how the Technical Guidance Documents can affect the details and spaces of a building.

Hand Drawn One-Point Perspective Drawing of House Interior Once we had the general layout of the house complete, we were tasked with creating 3D models out of card, such as the one shown in the image on the left. I enjoyed this process immensely, even though it was time consuming. It brought the house to life and helped me understand dimensions and proportions. It also provided me with something to cherish as a memory.

Lumion Render of House Interior

Hand Drawn House Front Elevation Using Watercolour Throughout this project, I had to complete graphical illustrations of the house and its interior. I used pointillism in a one-point perspective and watercolour for each of the images shown on the right. I broadened my knowledge in different physical media, instead of simply focusing on software programmes.

Lumion Render of House Exterior and Estate

The images above are some of the Lumion renders I had to create for this house project. This project challenged me in many ways, from using new software to using all sorts of media to develop my knowledge further. I enjoyed using Lumion to bring life to the home I was designing. 9
