from the locals Fall is getting underway throughout our great lake city on our Great Lake coast.

The weather is turning cooler, and the leaves are starting to change color and fall to the ground. But that doesn't mean things are slowing down any. In fact, the festivities are continuing to dash on ahead, if you will.

The summer closed out with a bang over Labor Day weekend, thanks to the Flowers in the Sky fireworks display and celebration honoring the life of Marie Bonaminio. Mrs. Bonaminio loved and appreciated the people of this city and owned Bonamino's Lorain Flower Shop for nearly 50 years before she passed away in February of this year. Her son, James Boniminio— who some in the Cincinnati area may better recognize as Jungle Jim—helped organize the event as his mom's final thank you to the city of Lorain, the city she always loved.

Helping to celebrate more people who love our city, The Latino Lorain History Project is now taking place and celebrates 100 years of Latino history here in Lorain. The project is a public history partnership between El Centro de Servicios Sociales, Lorain Historical Society, Oberlin College, and community leaders that will help preserve the history of the Latino community of Lorain. The first exhibit of many initiatives that will capture and preserve this history runs through October 30 at Lorain Historical Society's Carnegie Center on Tenth Street.

Also now on permanent display outside of the Carnegie Center sits a historical marker honoring Toni Morrison, a Nobel Prize-winning author from right here in Lorain. Born here in 1931 as Chloe Wofford, she worked in this building when it was the Lorain Public Library and formerly Carnegie Library. An installation ceremony took place on August 12, and the marker now stands at the northeast corner of the property. More information is available at lorainhistory.org.

Black River Landing has also seen some recent additions, including a StoryWalk made possible by Lorain Public Library System. This exciting new feature allows people to walk along a path while a children's picture book unfolds before them on frames throughout their stroll. The stories will change monthly from April through November, weather permitting, and the current selection is available to view at lorainpubliclibrary.org.

Throughout this issue, keep an eye out for some amazing things that have taken place recently or are taking place soon. Not that this amazement is anything new, but we continue sharing the stories of the wonderful people we get to call our neighbors and look forward to doing so well into the future.

Genesis House Honors Domestic Violence Awareness Month Genesis House, Lorain County’s only domestic violence shelter, takes full advantage of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month to spread awareness of this crime, its impact on our community and share services available to victims and perpetrators.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first introduced in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. It was created not only to bring more awareness but to connect and unify the millions of victims and their loved ones that had been affected due to this crime.

Every year in the U.S., around 10 million people become victims of domestic violence, about 20 people every minute. In Lorain County, there have been more domestic homicides in the past year than in the past three years combined.

This crime is often done in private; October is our opportunity to be loud with our efforts and remind survivors that we see them, we are here to help, and we care. It is also an opportunity to remind batterers that this behavior is unacceptable, we see them, and we are dedicated to holding them accountable.

Since 1995, Genesis House has been working to provide a comprehensive range of family-focused services for Lorain County Victims of domestic violence. We strive to provide tools to both victims and loved ones to maximize the opportunity to survive and families to heal. We want survivors to obtain physical and mental well-being to minimize the trauma involved in coping with domestic violence while helping them gain independence.

We serve as part of a collaborative community effort to provide a responsive system of care for victims, accountability and education for perpetrators, and raise awareness about domestic violence.

Genesis House provides shelter for adults and children fleeing from an abusive intimate partner.

Aftercare Services are for survivors who have left the shelter and want to stay connected to us to increase their social system and gain additional knowledge and skills.

The 24-hour hotline and chat line provide information and support.

The numbers are (440) 244-1853 or (440) 323-3400.

Support Groups are for survivors who want additional information and support.

Legal Advocacy is for folks going through the justice system who could use support and accompaniment at court hearings or obtaining a protection order.

A Children’s Advocate is available to work with kids in the shelter and facilitates a children’s art group for kids in the community who have witnessed violence.

Our Community Education team is in the schools providing prevention and intervention programs to teach students what a healthy relationship looks like, red flags of a dangerous relationship, and how to ask for help.

MAP (Men’s Anti-Violence Program) is a 26-week batterers intervention program focusing on accountability and the ideology of abusive men.

We host a podcast called Love Shouldn’t Hurt, a safe and confidential way to learn about domestic violence for all community members.

This October, be on the lookout for the following county-wide campaigns and awareness events: Purple Ribbons Be on the lookout for purple ribbons on trees, lamp posts, street signs, benches, and other public spaces all over Lorain County.

The Silent Witness Exhibit This exhibit tells the stories of 51 Lorain County community members murdered by someone who was supposed to love them. Stories are depicted in life-size red silhouettes. The entire display will be at various locations throughout the month and open to the public.

Empty Seat at the Table Displays This campaign tells the stories of all the Silent Witnesses. Each victim’s story is placed in a small frame and put on display on an empty seat in the community to represent the vacancies left in our community when people are taken from us by this horrible crime.

Now Serving Awareness This is a new campaign this year! We are asking restaurants and bars to join us in sharing life-saving information. We are asking establishments to display table and bar tents with information about domestic violence, Genesis House services, and how to get involved.

Love Shouldn’t Hurt Podcast This podcast is an educational podcast dedicated to sharing life-saving information about intimate partner violence.

In Celebration of A taste of some of the Pizza! Lorain! It's kinda our thing! No, really, it's honestly no secret that the people of Lorain are mega passionate about pizza. But how did an international city that's a melting pot of different cultures end up being such an intense pizza location? It's totally weird, and we may never know the answer. If you want to bring some pizza over and speculate ideas with me that would be super cool! And since I don't know the answers, I need to warn you that this article is a totally random stream of consciousness, not a review of our local pizza shops.

When I think of pizza, it's not just tasty, circular comfort food. Pizza is nostalgia. Pizza was there for so many of life's happy moments, and in a way, pizza is like an old friend. If I think about a specific pie, my b my brain lights up with old memories.

And I can even remember the taste, texture, and smell. Does that mean Rosie's Pizza 3113 Broadway that pizza is like a time machine of sorts? For me, it totally is. But if the time machine metaphor metaphor is a little weird for you, there's actually a scientific explanation for this phenomenon: phenomenon:the theProustian Proustianmoment— moment—a sensory experience that triggers a rush of memories often long past or even seemingly forgotten. And to me, this moment is like a food time machine.

I have learned in life that through the good times, the bad, the weird—a hot pizza is always going to make things better, even if only a little bit. If you ever see me picking up a large pepperoni pizza somewhere and I'm still in my pajamas, it's probably been a really tough week, but don't judge! We've all been there, right? My favorite thing to do when I've got the feelies is to drive to the beach with a piping hot double cheese pizza and sit with my feet in the sand, listening to the waves crash as I completely zone out and smash the entire pizza. Sometimes it's better than therapy.

I have an endless stream of memories that have some sort of connection to pizza. Special dates, concerts, accomplishments, failures, life, death—for all of these moments, pizza was there in one way or another. Earlier this summer, I hiked to the top of a mountain with leftover Yala's in my backpack and ate it at the summit. It was a totally unreal experience and a very awesome memory!

And remember moving into your first apartment and staying the night for the first time? Sitting on the floor and eating pizza with your friends, the lingering smell of fresh paint, boxes stacked everywhere, and that ultimate feeling of freedom— your first meal as an independent person, like a rite of passage into adulthood. On the flip-side, sometimes I just want to hide under a pile of blankets and crush some pizza while watching my favorite tv shows and turn my brain off completely.

Pizza is awesome, no matter the circumstances.

My goal for this random jumble of words was to evoke memories and emotions and try to link them to something as simple as pizza. I Iknew knewI wanted I wanted to steer eating pizza. to steer clear clear of of reviewing each of these restaurants a little crazycrazy whenwhen because people people can cangetget a little discussing their favorite pizza joint. Our city is so loyal to their favorite pizza parlors that I've literally seen people storm out of rooms and get angry while arguing about the best pizza places in town. I'm not even joking. Criticizing someone's favorite pizza in Lorain can be seen as fighting words. Each restaurant has very loyal fans who root for them like it's a full-blown sporting event.

Many of these places are long-standing pillars of the community, and their pizzas are like an extended member of the family.

There are thousands upon thousands of memories attached to pizza from Yala's, Rosie's, Giovanni's, Eliseo's, and Selenti's. There's a major emotional investment that some families have linked to these pizza places. Just imagine how many celebrations, milestones, birthday parties, weddings, and even tragedies these pizzas have been around for—decades of comforting the people of the city like a warm blanket. And to the new generation of pizza makers in our community, we welcome you and cannot wait to forge longlasting memories with all of you! For all those about to make pizza, we salute you!

Officer Naricisco Inchaurregui is newer to the LPD force than our previous highlights, having only two years under his police utility belt. But growing up in Lorain has given him an advantage that some of the other longer-standing officers on this force don't have.

As a child, he lived in South Lorain with his sister and four brothers, resulting in his familiarity with a fair amount of people, various neighborhoods, and the many cultures of our international city.

He attended Lowell Elementary School, where he started wrestling in second grade with the Southview Youth Wrestling Program, continuing into high school at Southview and then Lorain High. He gained a reputation for being an instigator during his many wrestling matches.

Inchaurregui sheepishly recalls that he got the two forearm tattoos that depict "Loved" and "Hated" in a fancy script in honor of his ornery "trash talking" days. He chuckled at the memory of how he would taunt the opposing team's audience, and then they would boo him.

Today, it's hard to envision Inchaurregui acting in a rowdy or brash way. The man I interviewed was exceedingly polite and gracious, a great conversationalist, open, and gentle-hearted, all the things that most people don't associate with police officers. But that's what makes this one exceptional.

Along with his line of work, Inchaurregui is also a devoted father and husband. One of his joys on his days off—along with MMA training, lifting weights, professional wrestling, and playing video games—is EATING! (He wrote that in all caps in one of our text messages.) He also likes watching Disney+ with his family and says he enjoys coming home late when everyone else is in bed to help with the laundry and cleaning the house. It's admirably obvious that family is a high priority for him.

Since family is such a pivotal part of Inchaurregui's life, it's a remarkable thing to discover that, though he frequently visited his father growing up, those visits took place at the local prison. Pointing out another tattoo on his arm of Simba, Disney's iconic lion cub, he says, "My Simba tattoo is probably my favorite tattoo. My earliest memory of my father is when I would visit him in prison and every visit, we had a set schedule. We would eat popcorn and watch 'The Lion King.' My father would always call me Simba and tell me 'remember who you are.'" photos courtesy of The Shipyards

The line is from the iconic scene where Simba has a vision of his deceased father Mufasa and chooses to head back to his hyena-ravaged homeland. The line aims to restore to Simba what he had lost: the strength to take his rightful place in the world with honor and dignity and to cast off shame and claim his birthright.

Influence from such an unlikely circumstance has had an amazing impact on Inchaurregui's personal life and his work life in uniform.

One of the more distinctive on-the-job-moments that has stuck with him was going to an accident where a young man was more concerned that he ruined his mom's car instead of his health. Inchaurregui encouraged him to get medical treatment and conveyed that a car is replaceable, but he, himself, was not, and his mom cared more about him than the car.

It is events like these that Inchaurregui would prefer the media to cover more. All the positive aspects of what police contribute to their cities, like patrolling the streets at 4 a.m. to ensure that the citizens can sleep safely—police officers are simply everyday people who have families who worry for them when they leave for work.

When asked if one positive experience stood out when interacting with the citizens of Lorain:

Inchaurregui is an exceptional officer. I know I already mentioned that, but I'll unabashedly say it again. He's young but not idealistic. He experiences a lot of negativity, but he's not jaded. He has a protective and steady temperament, his smile is quick and easy, and he laughs often. He's humble and has quite an amiable personality.

Inchaurregui knows his strength. He's a wrestler and trains in MMA. So if it's necessary to take someone to the ground, I'd rather it not be me. But the words "threatening" or "imposing" would not be the first words I'd use to describe him, and it's clear that he's confident enough in his abilities that he doesn't feel the need to be so. These are all the makings of a great police officer, and I am very pleased and grateful that of all the PDs in the US, he's here protecting us with the LPD. Lorain Local Magazine | page 15

Scrofano's Classic Barber Shop

Located at 929 Broadway in Lorain, Scrofano's Classic Barbershop moved to the downtown scene in early 2020.

Upon entering the shop, you immediately feel a strong connection to Italy's cultural influences derived from Owner Danny Scrofano's love of Sicilian traditions.

Danny's father was born and raised in Lorain, and his mother moved here from Canada at a young age. But both of his paternal grandparents were from Sicily, and Danny feels like his culture helps embrace who he wants to be. Although he is also part Canadian and Irish, he feels a strong connection to his grandparents' home country.

When he was younger, Danny's parents told him that he should become a barber. But he never considered it until his friend Jeff Delmonico said his good attention to detail would prove successful in the profession.

With Jeff's help, Danny went to barber school in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. He then started at Delmonico's Barber Shop here in Lorain on Oberlin Avenue 11 years ago.

"He was right, and I liked it," Scrofano said.

When getting a haircut at Scrofano's, Danny can guarantee you'll get a great haircut accompanied by great conversation. For those who don't like to chat, he has old black and white Sicilian films playing on his television set to add to the ambiance of the space. Danny also has an espresso machine for a delightful touch that contributes to the shop's atmosphere. The Sicilian style throughout was influenced by Sunday dinners spent with his family, a tradition that most Italians practice.

"That's why I have the whole scheme we have going on in here. My family and I put our mark on this place."

An Atmosphere Like No Other The barbershop is reminiscent of old Mediterranean-styled shops.

Upon arriving, it feels like you are stepping into a grotto, immersing you more into Danny's culture.

Walking through the door, you are immediately sent back in time to 1950s Sicily. The cohesive theme follows back to where an old wooden door stands as decoration surrounded by a table with bar stools.

The most unique aspect of the building is the interior wall design.

Danny created a mood using old Mediterranean-style stone walls accompanied by large wooden sliding doors throughout the shop. The shop reflects his personality and his hospitable character. Danny has lived in Lorain his entire life and wanted to set up shop in Lorain to spread the love of his culture in our international city.

Though he traveled to Florida for a year to learn more about his trade and focus on how to book appointments for his clients, he felt compelled to open up a business in downtown Lorain due to his pure love for his hometown.

When asked why he chose to open his classic shop, Danny quickly said,

"Oh, I just love downtown Lorain. I used to ride my bike down here as a kid." He gave it no second thought. "Why not do it in downtown Lorain?"

"Downtown has so much character."

He compared Lorain to Ohio City with how the two lively areas hold so much character and culture. But,

"No other city compares to Lorain," he said. "We hold a special value that no other waterfront town has."

As a child, he considered Lorain a blank canvas and always felt a need to start a business in a waterfront location.

Danny lives near Century Park and loves his short ride to work every day. One of his favorite parts of the downtown area is the waterfront views. He is impressed with Lorain's artistry and landscape, and there is no competition with any neighboring states.

He recalls time spent at the Lorain International Festival in the summertime and continues to attend the event every year it's held. He loves to spend time by the water with his family and friends attending Rockin' on the River events and other summer festivities.

He is very optimistic that new clients will come following his big move downtown. With new people taking an interest in the city, he claimed it was "about damn time." And in the future, he's hoping Lorain can eventually capitalize off of their waterfront location.

When asked about advising prospective small business owners, he stated,

"Just do it and give 150 percent."

For anyone looking to relocate and settle down in Lorain, Danny recommends that being near the lake is better. With more stores and cultural restaurants opening, he is proud that each spot downtown has its own niche market and individual flair.

"Everyone's got their thing, and hopefully, we can continue to feed off of one another and continue to grow, and grow, and grow."

Jevon Terance, international fashion designer and Lorain native, featured his 14th-anniversary collection on Sunday, July 18, at the Black River Landing South parking lot.

Jevon’s collection gained inspiration from the Ferrari 512 and Jordan XIV sneaker. The collection features main colors of red, black, and gold, mixed with women’s, men’s, and unisex looks.

Jevon wanted to create a high-fashion racecar experience consisting of the models walking the runway in the layout of his logo design depicting a race track.

There were close to 400 viewers in attendance at the outside location.

From record-breaking attendance to untimely inclement weather, the Rockin’ on the River crew experienced a full gamut of emotions in their 2021 season.

The weekly summer concert series was set to start Memorial Day weekend off with a bang Friday, May 28.

Instead, Concert Promoters Bob and Sandy Early were met with torrential downpours and gusting winds, leading to one of the only cancellations in 35 years of shows.

But the one-week delay didn’t keep concertgoers away on what became opening night on June 4.

“I will have to say that first show we had way more than we thought [we would],” said Bob Earley.

“But it wasn’t necessarily because of us. It was because people were so tired of being locked up.”

After taking the year off in 2020 due to COVID-19, Earley said he was excited to coordinate concerts again.

“Just to be back and to see everybody smiling and no mask wearing and happy, so from a personal point of view it was exhilarating,” he said. “From a business point of view, it was amazing because we had to get back to work sooner or later.”

Since 1986, Bob and his wife Sandy have put together the Friday night concert series featuring tribute bands. And in 2015, Rockin’ on the River moved from Cuyahoga Falls to Lorain’s Black River Landing.

Bob said Lorain welcomed him with open arms.

“Everyone in the City of Lorain, from the mayor to especially the police department—they are incredible to work with,” said Bob. “The Port Authority folks along with their Executive Director Tom Brown have been more than wonderful to us, too.”

“If I were looking at a concert venue, and you’ve got to say Blossom Music Center is magnificent, but I would take this site over that site,” he said, noting the Black River, the dock, pavilions, ample space to spread out and the way the sound carries. “This is the best venue, to me, in the state.”

Earley said he and his wife considered Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Downtown Cleveland before deciding to move Rockin’ on the River to Lorain.

Earley said he, his wife, and a team of three others work together to set up the site each Friday and the occasional Saturday show. He said the crew has setup down to a science, including around 15 tents, two entrances, stocking about 12 bars, and placing at least 35 trash cans.

“I don’t think people realize how much really goes into it,” he said. “We get here by 9:30 a.m. and get out by 2 in the morning, so that’s a lot of hours.”

And those hours can feel especially long when it’s raining.

Earley said this was the worst weather year they have ever had, with one rainout, rain on seven different concert days, and August 20 and 27 being around 90 degrees. The good news is they rescheduled the rainout on May 28 to September 10 for Dirty Deeds, Xtreme AC/DC, with special guest Invincible, a Pat Benatar Tribute, that concluded the season.

Bob gave a lot of credit to his wife and business partner Sandy.

“I’m the front of the house, she’s the back of the house,” Bob explained. “She’s the meat and potatoes. We never would be successful without her, and quite frankly when it comes to the physical work, she works five times more than I do.”

And the hard work seems to be paying off as this season had two nights with about 11,000 people in attendance. The first was July 17, featuring bands Wish You Were Here, the Sight and Sound of Pink Floyd, with special guest Colin Dussault’s Blues Project. The second was July 30 for Queen Nation, a tribute to the music of Queen with special guest Brass Metropolis, a tribute to Chicago. l a c ol ni a r ol e h t @ | m o c .l a c ol ni a r ol

Earley said he doesn’t know an exact count, but what he does know is, “We had the two biggest

crowds this year that we’ve ever had in 35 years of Rockin’ on the River, that’s for sure.”

Rockin’ on the River is locked in at Black River Landing through 2024. But Lorain Port and Finance Authority Executive Director Tom Brown and the board of directors are already discussing a contract extension through at least 2025 to make up for 2020.

“The Lorain Port and Finance Authority has had a remarkable relationship with Rockin’ on the River,” said Brown. “After we missed 2020 it was a very quiet summer, so getting everybody back out and enjoying the sights and sounds of Rockin’ on the River in 2021—it made us realize that we absolutely need to extend the contract to make up for that lost year. We’re looking forward to keeping Rockin’ on the River and all of our music fans happy through 2025.”

Bob said he and Sandy love having their concert series in the International City and look forward to the years to come.

“I love the people of Lorain because the spirit in this town is like no other town I’ve been around,” he said. “Even though [the city] has had some tough times in the last few years, the people who still live here maybe aren’t doing quite as well, but they still have the spirit of their mom and dad and their grandma and grandpa, and it shows in this town. I love Lorain because of that.”

Occurrences that are so powerful they spark an idea, a movement, an action. For Georgia Curry, JuiceMe owner, this moment occurred ten years ago when a health scare caused her to evaluate her diet and wellbeing. Taking control of her health, she followed the suggestion of her sister and began juicing.

Juicing is defined as a process where juice is extracted from fruits and vegetables, such as through pressing or squeezing. The benefits of juicing range from energy boosts to the support of a healthy immune system and even weight loss! Overall, adding more fruits and vegetables to our diets supplies our bodies with the vitamins and nutrients needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.* And Georgia can attest.

Following a Doctor's checkup, she was informed that one of her former health conditions was gone.

At the time Georgia was living in Atlanta, and she began to pay closer attention to the juicing options available to her.

As she took deeper notice, she realized that the juice options were often made with added sugars and frozen products, diminishing the benefits of fresh produce.

Georgia continued to work her corporate job and assist her husband in the success of Steel City until COVID threatened her own career.

She then decided she was going to go after her dream.

Although the road to launch presented some tribulations, JuiceMe Juice Bar celebrated its grand opening on January 18, 2021!

The Grind League hosted its second annual 3x3 Basketball Tournament and Community Togetherness Fest at Oakwood Park on September 4 and 5. The event featured various family-friendly activities, including musical acts, artwork displays, a bounce house for the kids, and an array of food and retail vendors.

The City of Lorain supported the three-on-three basketball portion, and the International Basketball Foundation (FIBA) endorsed the event. FIBA is the world governing body for basketball that organizes and oversees international competitions, including the Olympic Basketball Tournaments. The Play FIBA 3x3 campaign endorsement promotes playground basketball play on local courts.

The two-day event provided the opportunity to showcase the beauty of Lorain County right here in our backyard. Locals and leaders from all sides of town, including Mayor Jack Bradley and 6th Ward City Councilman Rey Carrion, showed their support by attending the fest.

One vendor, Relic Clothing III, pulled up to the park for the two days, bringing their unique vintage camper and the refreshed 80s and 90s fashion they offer in various styles.

The tournament portion of the fest concluded on day one, but day two offered plenty of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Grind League President and Event Organizer Darius Winborn said the organization "received great feedback from spectators and parents, appreciating and supporting what was put together for the youth, giving them days of hosted games—open and tournament—to play in a fun, safe, and festive atmosphere."

The Grind League is a newly formed community-based nonprofit that hosts, curates, and organizes sporting activities and events for youth, teens, and young adults. They also provide food drives and self-care kits to individuals and families in need.
