My favorite part of attending was the spirit that the event brought to the event enter. With vendors from all over Ohio, this event was the only event of the year for some of them. Their heart and soul poured into their craft. I must have walked through 100 times just to meet each one of them and to check out their product. The feeling of love, safety, and eagerness to share their gifts with people was by far the best part. Coming together to safely celebrate small businesses this way was the best way it could have been done, and I was proud to be a part of it.

The City of Lorain approved a 3D-script Lorain sign for the northeast corner of Broadway and West Erie Avenues. The project will use these Lorain County contractors: Terminal Ready-Mix for the foundation, Kuhn Fabricating for the 3Dscript Lorain sign, Thomas Ott and Brian Bartlebaugh for the signage concept and design, Schramm Sign for a crane and installation, Gary Fisher of Fisher & Associates Architects Inc., and Frank Sipkovsky for project assistance.

The estimated cost of the project is $25,000.

Andrea Neal is the project leader and is currently establishing accounts for foundations and the general public to assist in achieving this goal. As a thank you, there will be a metal dedication plaque referencing the names of contributors and contractors involved in the project and its completion.

The Lorain sign is to be enjoyed by the public. We, as a community, need to capitalize on one of Lorain's greatest assets. From Our Family to Yours, First of all, happy new year to you! We hope you have remained well over the holidays and you are settling in nicely to 2021.

We are finally into a new year, and with it brings much promise of a fresh start, a new outlook, and a blank canvas for each of us to design how we would like. With record-breaking achievements already in the works, the process of setting the stage for it to be the best year yet has begun.

As a publication, we are now on to our second edition. Making it into our next calendar year feels like an amazing accomplishment worth celebrating, given the extreme circumstances that have affected our world so powerfully during 2020. Stay tuned for announcements surrounding that celebration!

Our organization is also continuously evolving, similar to what other businesses have done over the past couple of months.

But no matter the evolution, the mission of Lorain Local will always remain to celebrate the individuals, companies, organizations, and events within the city of Lorain, Ohio.

We are happy to be here. We are proud of this city that we call home; we are Lorain proud.

Most importantly, we are impressed by all of the people who have wholeheartedly accepted and supported us through it all.

These will forever remain our earliest supporters, and honestly, we cannot begin to thank them enough for all of their help.

As we begin to embark on the course of the year, we all are continuing to dream big. Some inspiring things are in the works for 2021, and we cannot wait to share everything with you.

Throughout this issue, you will hear from some of the movers and shakers helping to better our great lake city on our Great Lake coast. The people in this issue are just some of the inspirations making the positive changes that we all want to see throughout Lorain and along our waterfront.

From the lake to the south side, and everywhere in between, there is a significant awakening taking place—a rebirth we like to refer to as the Lorainaissance. And we are excited to be here celebrating and sharing all of it with all of you.

A dear friend once shared a story with us that has resonated over the years. From it came the mantra: I get to do this.

Without sharing the whole story, the premise is that life can change in a heartbeat right before your very eyes.

All of us felt that feeling in one way or another in the past year. But unfortunately, that feeling is not exclusive to 2020. That is why now, more than ever, we have to be in this together. We have to set aside our many differences, try to remain as positive as possible, and look ahead to the brighter days—and warmer weather—that will ensue.

If any city can act as an example showcasing acceptance and perseverance, it is Lorain, The International City.

Awaken History: The Shipyards Ship building was one of Lorain's first industries, dating back to the early 1800s. In 1898, Cleveland Ship Building Company, purchased by American Ship Building Company in 1900, relocated from Cleveland to the East bank of the Black River. This move helped to make Lorain's dry docks the largest on the Great Lakes.

Superior City was the first steel ship launched from Lorain on April 13, 1898.

Over the years, these dry docks built 295 boats, consisting of passenger ships, tankers, tugs, and ferries.

During World War II, the shipyard contributed to the Navy fleet with mine sweepers, ore boats, and cruisers—most notably the USS Lorain and USS Lorain County.

Beginning in the 1960s, the trend of lengthening existing ships took over the industry. When the Soo Locks expanded to over 1,000 feet, Lorain's dry docks rose to the challenge building the longest freighters on the Great Lakes.

The first freighter to be extended was the Roger Blough, but many followed. The M/V William J. Delancy, renamed M/V Paul R. Tregurtha, launched in 1981. It remains the longest freighter in operation on the Great Lakes at an astounding 1,013 feet in length.

Coined "Queen of the Lakes," the Tregurtha was the final ship built in Lorain.

She is the exclamation point to the end of an era.

First Super Carrier, Roger Blough, 833' x 105' x 39'. The Blough suffered an engine room fire at the Lorain yard on June 24, 1971 with four lives lost. Blough was put into service in 1972.

Since closing and being dismantled, the dry docks and the surrounding landscape have been completely transformed. Where 1,000-foot freighters once stood tall during construction, now is home to the Harborwalk neighborhood, Lorain's most desirable riverfront community providing luxury living. The dry docks are now brimming with water, along with seasonal and transient dockage for pleasure boats.

Only two buildings still stand as a reminder of Lorain's ship building past: the water tower that stands watch over the Black River and the former Ship Building Pattern Warehouse.

This 25,000-square-foot, red brick building is discovering a new identity as The Shipyards, one of Lorain's premier dining, gathering, and events venues.

A dramatic departure from the pattern building's past, The Shipyards now accommodates special occasions and creates memories for a new generation,

forging ahead with a nod to the past.

A Message from 6th Ward Councilman, Rey Carrion As my first year serving as your 6th Ward Councilman comes to an end, I would like to thank you for your incredible support and guidance. The work accomplished in one short year is attributed to your strong commitment, support, and overall love of South Lorain. We will complete many more exciting projects together.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to all of us in 2020, but it did not derail our passion and commitment to South Lorain.

The number one issue on my radar upon entering office was the state of the sewer and water rates. The incredibly high rates created a hardship for the people of Lorain. I would like to thank Mayor Bradley and his team, along with my colleagues on City Council, for lowering both rates to a level that is fair and manageable. We will continue to analyze all facts before additional recommendations are made.

During my first year in office, I dedicated a substantial amount of time to improve the curb appeal of our main corridors: Grove Avenue, East 28th Street, and Pearl Avenue. During this period, we have witnessed the demolition of El Patio Restaurant, Tony J’s Bar & Grille, a commercial building next to the former Fashion’s Dry Cleaner Building, and the Puerto Rican Home.

Lorain County has transformed the former Duray Steel Building at 1627 East 28th Street into a state-of-the-art recycling center. The improvements to the exterior have certainly enhanced the overall curb appeal of this historic corridor. The many SouthSide Cleanups served as the impetus for this transformation.

Private development in South Lorain is also emerging. Scotti Bowyer of East 28th Street Auto replaced many sidewalks around his properties to give the area a much-needed boost.

Just recently, the former YMCA Building, vacant for twenty years, was sold and is prime for a fantastic redevelopment plan. I will keep you posted as that plan unfolds.

One serious concern for all South Lorainites is the dangerous traffic condition at the intersection of East 28th Street and Pearl Avenue. The City is currently implementing a “road diet” plan to determine the most practical and effective method to keep motorists and pedestrians safe. We currently have orange road dividers/barriers placed on East 28th Street —east and west of Pearl Avenue—to study line-of-sight conditions for motorists merging onto East 28th Street. There is more to follow on this study. There is much work to be done. However, we will continue to work aggressively to clean up our neighborhoods.

A long-standing blighted condition is the former Hills Department Store Building, which sits at the main entrance of our district. In June of 2020, I recommended a zoning change of this property from I-1 to B-2. This zoning change is a critical step to assure future development is consistent with general business uses and not industrial uses. I am working with the Bradley Administration and Lorain Law Department to get this site cleaned up now.

Quite a bit of attention and time has also been dedicated to Oakwood Park. The community clean-up events sponsored by the Friends of South Lorain have been fantastic and rewarding.

Renovations to the swimming pool facility are expected in early 2021 to allow for a reopening in the summer!

Through the Friends of South Lorain grassroots organization, we were able to raise close to $32 thousand in one year through the sponsorships of high school and holiday banners, donations, and grants. Together, we were able to bring life back to our community while raising the capital to reinvest back into South Lorain. This is a win-win proposition!

Some of the proceeds raised in 2020 will support the reopening of the pool. In 2021, we will also turn our attention to improve Fairless Park and Homewood Park. It is important for all neighborhood parks to be clean, maintained, and vibrant. We need our parks to provide a safe and inviting environment for our children and families. We will work aggressively and strategically on this initiative.

Lastly, when running for this position, I made a pledge indicating that my full city council salary would be donated to create an endowment fund specifically dedicated to South Lorain. I am proud to announce that as of December 31, 2020, the Felix and Margie Carrion South Lorain Fund has been established through the Community Foundation of Lorain County. These dollars will provide valuable support to the needs of our community for years to come.

Again, thank you for your heartfelt support, and I look forward to working with each and every one of you this coming year to make South Lorain what it needs to be!

Another bright spot for South Lorain is a man named Jorge Villegas. Through his leadership and vision, he organized large, sanctioned softball tournaments this past year that gave us all a reminder of how vibrant and fun Oakwood Park used to be. He has bigger plans for 2021. The critical mass generated from these tournaments will serve as an economic engine for our district.

The new grocery store/restaurant coming to the former Ice Cream Heaven location will undoubtedly benefit from all of the planned park activities.

Trees, Trains, and Window Panes

The ninth annual International Trees and Trains event at Black River Landing

For the ninth season in a row, the International Tree and Model Train Display filled the Lorain Port and Finance Authority's Transportation Center at 421 Black River Lane in downtown Lorain, Ohio. Despite the coronavirus pandemic and its effect on events and gatherings, Gail Bonsor and the Lorain Growth Corporation Tourism Committee found a way to work around social distancing this year.

Instead of entering the building to view the beautifully decorated evergreens and intricately designed model train displays, visitors could view this year's rendition through the windows.

"We didn't have any other choice," said Bonsor, explaining how Lorain County Public Health recommended against an indoor event.

But having fond memories of looking at beautifully decorated shop windows during the Christmas season, Bonsor was up for the challenge.

"When I was a child, we would go into Cleveland at Christmastime," she said about her family. "May Company and Halle's all had decorated windows, and at the same time in Sheffield on [SR] 254 where Apples and Marc's are—that was a big shopping center at one time, and all the windows were decorated the same as in Cleveland. It was really neat."

With fewer trees and a modified layout, Bonsor worked with the Tourism Committee, the Lorain Caboose Committee, and Lorain Winterfest Committee to create the display, which takes more than a month to construct.

"It was fantastic how the three groups worked together," Bonsor said of the collaboration between the three Lorain Growth Corp. committees.

In the early stages of decorating, Bonsor uses a lift to hang items from the ceiling and clean the train track that travels around the perimeter of the building's main room. This year, the building's exterior and the picnic pavilion that housed Santa's shed and sleigh added additional lights.

Bonsor said Terry Kushinski with Kush Custom Cabinetry created Santa's shed that was initially supposed to be used during Lorain Winterfest. When COVID-19 concerns led to the cancellation of the Winterfest festivities, the shed was slightly repurposed and has now been used for a few photo opportunities by families visiting the site and window display.

Trees, figurines, and Christmas scenes were set on tables along the perimeter of the Transportation Building. They included a 60-foot model train track put together by the module group of Division Four of the National Model Railroad Association, Mid-Central Region.

Although this was the only train display featured this year, the month-long event typically features various model train displays created by area enthusiasts.

From the first International Tree and Model Train Display in 2012, the idea has always been to engage the community and draw people down to Black River Landing. Bonsor said before having the first event, she and her husband attended every toy and train show and talked to every train-person possible. She also mailed a letter to every church she could think of requesting they decorate a tree based on the churches' nationality.

"But we only had one church reply, and that was St. Nicholas [Byzantine Catholic Church], and they still are putting up a display for us every year representing St. Nicholas and what he does at Christmastime," she said.

"We're lucky to still have them."

Bonsor said visitors seemed to embrace the change to the annual event."I think people enjoyed it," she said. "People waved to us who were inside the building."

In normal years, numerous groups and individuals decorate trees based on either a specific theme or nationality.

Bonsor said some of the usual decorators elected not to participate this year due to COVID-19-related concerns, but everyone said they would be back next year.

Tom Brown, executive director of the Lorain Port & Finance Authority, continued his annual tradition with his daughters Summer and Willow by decorating a Chinese-themed tree this year.

"I always enjoy doing our tree with Summer and Willow," he said. "We add new ornaments each year that we find at Asian Markets, so we added some really cool new items this year. So happy that Gail and her team figured out a way to brighten this holiday season."

Bonsor said the tree and train display had drawn as many as 1,000 visitors on opening night in years past. And typically, those visiting don't leave in a hurry.

"Sometimes they go around two or three times before they actually leave the building," she said.

This year, Bonsor estimated about 200 people visited the indoor/outdoor display, which also featured lights on Lorain's Caboose C-3855. She said the hope is to incorporate the caboose into the event even more next year as it will be moved closer to the Transportation Center once the committee has the train car sandblasted and primed.

PPG is donating all of the paint for the refurbishment of the caboose, and Raymond Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning will install the heating and air conditioning at nearly no cost to the Caboose Committee.

Despite it being an odd year with many changes, Bonsor thinks the window display worked out well, and she's looking forward to seeing how the 10th annual display will evolve in 2021.

"Hopefully, we'll be back to normal by next year," she said.

"It would be great."

"People have been very generous," Bonsor said.

Division Four of The National Model Railroad Association Mid-Central Region is an organization in Northeast Ohio that has been in existence for more than 50 years. Also known as The North Coast Division, Division Four has more than 200 members from Cuyahoga, Lorain, Huron, Erie, and Medina Counties.

The division dedicates itself to supporting and promoting the hobby of model railroading. There are many opportunities and events where people can see what model railroading is all about, whether someone has experience with model trains or is new to the art.

Division Four’s displays travel to many events throughout the year. One event is The Great Berea Train Show held during the first weekend in October at The Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.

Another event, taking place on the first Sunday of November, is Division Four’s “TRAINing Day.” This free event coincides with National Model Railroad Month and occurs at the Black River Landing Transportation Center. Members set up around the building and show how the division does what they do. At this event, all aspects of the hobby are on display. Visitors can participate in make-it and take-it projects, try their hand at a switching challenge, and have many opportunities to win door prizes.

The most visible part of Division Four's community outreach is its nationally-recognized and award-winning module group. The module group displays a portable HO Scale operating layout known as the Cleveland Sandusky & Southern Railway. All of the modules are owned and maintained by members. They represent either a local area—current or historical—or something near and dear to that individual member.

Division Four has participated in eight of the nine years of the annual International Trees and Trains event at Black River Landing. In the past two years, they have also participated in the Wild Winter Lights holiday event at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The module group displays at other locations throughout the year, including Great Lakes Science Center, The Cuyahoga County Fair, and local library branches. They have also traveled outside of Ohio for events in several states, including Michigan, Indiana, Massachusetts, and most recently in 2018, Missouri.

In 2016 the group’s display was awarded “Best In Show” at the National Train Show in Indianapolis. A trip to the 2020 National Train Show in St. Louis had been planned, but safety concerns surrounding COVID-19 caused the event to be canceled.

Overall, The NMRA, MCR, Division Four is a highly active organization supporting and promoting a great hobby that provides a platform for creativity, learning, and fine-tuning skills. It also provides historical and current roles of the railroads, a depiction of historical and current landmarks, and so much more for all ages.

In This Town, Girls Give Back

A behind-the-scenes look at two events that now call Lorain home

Choosing to hold both The Winter Market and The Summer Market in Lorain, Ohio, in 2020 was the best decision we ever made. In a year filled with uncertainty, loss, and sadness, a glimmer of hope and a giant ray of joy welcomed us the moment we entered this reenergized city.

Founded in 2006, The Summer and Winter Markets are shopping event fundraisers hosted by Girls Give Back.

Volunteers come together and work over two-day weekends to raise money for local families and organizations in need while also supporting hundreds of artists, makers, growers, foodies, and collectors.

What struck me the most about Lorain was not only the beautiful Black River Landing that became the home of The Summer Market this past year or the gorgeously renovated Shipyards Event Center that housed The Winter Market for the second successive year.

It was the people.

Every—and I mean every—person we met that helped us pull off these events was welcoming, positive, and supportive every step of the way, and the local business community embraced us wholeheartedly. I cannot put into words how that energy helped carry us through the long and exhausting Market weekends last year.

Tom Brown and his staff at the Lorain Port and Finance Authority, and Anthony Giardini, Joe Lucas, and their team at The Shipyards have been amazing hosts for our event locations. They have all bent over backward to make sure The Markets happened in the best way possible during the most challenging year imaginable.

There is no way in the world I could have hosted these events without Lorain County Health Commissioner Dave Covell by my side. There were so many questions and lots of second-guessing, but Dave held my hand and walked me through the steps I should take while keeping vendors, volunteers, and shoppers as safe as possible.

And I would be remiss not to mention Eric Hoover, the health inspector who spent countless hours on the phone with me, helping me cross my t's and dot my i's as we both tried to find our way through the waves of a global pandemic.

Both men were my lifeline last year, and I couldn't have done it without them.

The Winter Market, held this past November, was organized a little differently this year. We wanted to continue to support the small businesses that desperately needed a place to sell their wares. And we wanted to continue to support The Shipyards and bring in lots of people to their event center, restaurant, and coffee shop. But most importantly, we wanted to fulfill our $15,000 pledge to Blessing House of Lorain for the Child Intake Room at their new home. In 2019, we sponsored the Lake Erie Children's Bedroom for $25,000.

We had to think through how we would do all of those things while still being mindful of the coronavirus. Our plan was a little crazy, but we took a chance.

We knew we would have to severely limit the number of shoppers at the indoor event this year, so we created time slots with 125–175 people shopping every hour and a half. The riskiest part of the planning was that we charged $15-$30 just for people to attend.

So, some magic happened, and some good was done last year! It was all possible because of the kind, supportive, and generous village that surrounds us.

But it all worked! And it all worked beautifully. We heard countless remarks about how people enjoyed shopping with smaller groups, how everyone felt safe while in the building, how people enjoyed the restaurant and coffee shop, and how vendors were ecstatic about record sales this year. The best part? We surpassed our fundraising goal of $15,000 and ended up writing a check to Blessing House for $20,000!

As the cold and snow come to Lorain County, the phone calls continue to come to Blessing House. Parents are worried about paying their bills. They are frustrated, not knowing what to expect at work or what will happen with their children’s schooling arrangements. They are worried about their families’ health. The one thing that every caller needs, especially during these challenging times, is hope. At Blessing House, we listen, we care, and we respond, knowing how important it is to provide that hope when it is in short supply.

Blessing House is a children’s crisis care center that provides residential care for children up to 12 years old when there is an emergency in the family. Children come to us for many reasons, and we provide loving care for them while we work with their parent or caregiver to help them address their family’s situation. We are an independent, faith-based non-profit organization and have cared for over 1,500 children since opening 15 years ago.

Sr. Mary Berigan, executive director, and Donna Humphrey, finance/development, are cofounders of Blessing House. Sr. Mary explains that Blessing House was founded as a way to provide a safe place for children to stay when a parent was having an emergency, and there was no place else for them to go. Sr. Mary and Donna were aware through their involvement as volunteer guardian ad litems that some families become unnecessarily involved in the court system with their children when all they needed was a little help to get them through some tough times. Blessing House is a grassroots organization founded and operated by citizens of Lorain County to support these families, keeping children safe and families together.

Families call Blessing House for help for a variety of reasons, including homelessness, substance abuse, family violence, hospitalization, and mental and physical illness. Parents call for help when they are experiencing high levels of stress or when there is conflict in the home.

Placement is voluntary, and parents maintain custody of their children while they are with us.

There is no cost for our services.

Children receive loving care in a homelike environment. They continue to go to their home schools and receive help for their academic, developmental, emotional, and social needs. Parents receive information to help them address their issues and encouragement to get them through their tough times.

Blessing House is now building a new home so that more of our children and their families can experience the hope they need to sustain them through difficult times. We are growing so that we can care for more children, support more parents, and provide more positive experiences for our families. Our capacity will expand from 10 to 28 children in our new 16,730 square foot home.

The new Blessing House is located on Olivet Ave. in Elyria Township, midway between the cities of Elyria and Lorain.

It is now under construction with plans to move in this Spring. We have raised over $2 million toward our goal of $3.1 million and are entering the final stage of our capital campaign. Girls Give Back has donated over $40,000 and has sponsored two of our rooms while helping us spread the word about our program and our project.

In order to help us reach our goal by our move-in date, Ben and Jane Norton and their family have issued The Norton Family Challenge to match $1 for every $2 donated to Blessing House up to a limit of $25,000 per individual, business, or organization.

“We are excited to undertake this challenge and finish our campaign so that we can provide the help our families need. There is so much more we are going to be able to do in our new home. We expect to provide additional programming for our families and will be reaching out to other organizations to coordinate services that will address families’ most critical needs.�

Recently, one of the children who stayed with us when she was six years old stopped by to visit.

She is now 20 years old and still remembers what it was like when she stayed at Blessing House. She remembered the car she rode in, the dog she played with, and even remembered where she left her handprint on our wall. She told us how she felt loved and cared for while she was with us and how she now was working with other girls in her church because she wanted to give back and help them. As a matter of fact, someday, she dreams of opening a shelter for women who need to get back on their feet. She said she found faith through the love that she got at Blessing House.

A Renovation Story Capturing the journey of one local photographer on a mission to inspire others and help awaken our downtown

Jason Shaffer is on a mission to make his new photography studio at 633 Broadway Avenue one of downtown Lorain's most beautiful spaces. Housing two storefronts with three apartments above, Jason is in the process of creating an area that will last for many generations to come.

With a thriving, well-established photography business in tow, the opportunity to open a studio in proximity to his clients always remained a must. Around the time Speak of Devil Cocktail Bar was under construction on Fifth Street, Jason's friend Mike Sekletar introduced him to the idea of seeking a location in Lorain.

Mike is one of the artists responsible for the Greetings from Lorain, Ohio postcard mural in the alley adjacent to Speak of the Devil.

With Jason's portfolio expanding throughout the Midwest and country, Lorain was a prime location both for him to travel to his clients and allow his clients to visit him conveniently for studio time.

"When I got the keys to this building, I had no idea what type of journey was ahead. I have remodeled buildings before, but never a project this large," Jason shared. "From day one, this restoration has challenged me physically, mentally, and emotionally—like to the max."

While Jason has a support system around him, he has completed most of the renovation work himself. The remodel first began upstairs with the three apartments and then moved downstairs to the studio that he has now sectioned off into two separate storefronts. He said the upstairs redo took a long time, but it did not come close to the near 40,000 nails removed from the lower level floor during that phase of demolition.

Regardless of the difficulty, Jason has referred to this rehabilitation project as his mission. He shared how this project has been the most challenging thing he has ever worked on and that this has also been the hardest he has ever worked on anything. But all of his hard work and persistence is beginning to pay off.

Formerly home to a flower shop, 633 Broadway has now blossomed into a place where creative, one-of-a-kind images come alive. Jason is creating visions where art and style collide inside these newly repurposed walls. He is continuously pushing his craft's boundaries blending his specialties in food, commercial, and product photography.

Beyond working with people and food, Jason also specializes in fine art photography and sells his prints to companies, interior designers, and individuals for their homes and offices.

A LOOK AT LORAIN'S OLDEST RETAIL BUSINESS: Inside Nielsen Jewelers

Much has changed since Hans Pader Nielsen came to Lorain in 1877 and established the modern-day Nielsen Jewelers on the west side of the Black River. Yet, the feel of family and the old-fashioned traditions of quality, service, and value remain the same.

Founded in 1694 in Ballum, Denmark, Nielsen Jewelers has been passed down from father to son for over 300 years, thus establishing a centuries-old tradition of trusted jewelers.

In 1872, Hans Pader crossed the Atlantic Ocean looking for a better life. He found himself landing in Cleveland, where he opened up his first store.

After five years in Cleveland, Hans Pader had grown tired of the noise and busy city life. He had heard of a small, up-andcoming shipbuilding community known as Lorain, Ohio.

Looking for a change, Hans Pader took another chance and moved his business to the shores of the Black River.

Today, Nielsen Jewelers operates with the hands of Hans Pader's great-grandchildren, Carl Nielsen and Tina Nielsen Zaworski. They are currently located in the heart of downtown Lorain at 753 Broadway Avenue, serving the city, the surrounding area, and beyond as a one-stop-shop for every jewelry need.

Inside Lorain's oldest retail business, more than just stunning jewelry is on display. Rich history lines the walls of both the family and the beautiful city.

Three monumental portraits of the men who started and kept Nielsen Jewelers alive in America prominently hang on the walls. A collection of local pictures and videos dating back to the 1900s loop on the TV screens. And scale replicas of some of the more famous ships built in Lorain adorn the display cabinets, including the first and last metal hull ships built in the city.

This family-owned business offers one-of-a-kind pieces and custom-made designs, as well as everyday repairs and alterations. Rest easy, knowing that the work is done right here in Lorain.

However, it's not their ancestry nor the love of the city that defines them. Take a closer look, and it is a commitment to excellence and community less commonly found in today's world than in previous generations.

Nielsen's is also home to one of the area's largest loose gemstone collections, with thousands of stones to browse through. Each stone is sourced from around the world and is hand-selected for its superb quality and appearance.

They create numerous locally-inspired designs that showcase Lorain, with the inspiration stemming from the rebirth happening in the city.

During the COVID-19 shutdown, the family worked on a new collection, combining Lorain-themed jewelry with one of Lake Erie's overlooked treasures, beach glass.

"I am a big believer in reinventing yourself every now and then. If you keep doing the same thing, you are destined to fail," Carl said. "We always ask ourselves how can we be better? And how can we better serve the community?"

The Nielsens have always put their customers first and use customer feedback to enhance their business. Carl and Tina both play a big part in helping the community each year. Carl has served many years on numerous boards and continues to show his support through his involvement with the Lorain Port and Finance Authority.

After seeing major growth in the downtown area, Nielsen's, alongside other businesses, have noticed a spike in clientele from locals and neighboring towns stopping in to check out what all the buzz is about.

"Rockin' on the River came in and showed people what a great city Lorain is, and when they did that, we started believing in ourselves again," Carl shared. "And now we see true passion from Lorainites being prideful about their city."

For a prospective business owner looking to open a small business in downtown Lorain, Carl's advice is to show your true passion for what you do.

"If you do what you love, your passion for your business will shine through," he said.

They are fond of seeing all of the new businesses open around them. Carl jokingly shared that he has a love/hate relationship with Marta's N More at 763 Broadway, conveniently located next door to Nielsen's. He loves the irresistible doughnuts but struggles with the extra pounds.

"We want to keep going forward, especially after the big revitalization in Lorain.

We want to keep pushing ahead. It is exciting to see the rebirth of Lorain. It has been a long road, but we still have more to go," Carl said.

The future of Lorain and Nielsen Jewelers remains bright. Lorain continues to evolve and strive for new heights, and Carl's son Carl Gregory has recently joined the family business.

CG is currently finishing his classes at the Gemology Institute of America and completing other certifications to ensure that the Nielsen family tradition will live on in Lorain for years to come.

Fresco Fresco Bistro: Bistro: Fresh Fresh and and Delicious— Delicious— Nutritious, Nutritious, Too Too

“Think Fresh!” is the slogan of this restaurant because owner Laura Vega absolutely loves food and drink that is fresh and delicious.

From grain bowls to wraps, and from salads to ramen broths and soups—each overflowing with carefully curated quality ingredients—Fresco Bistro at 637 Broadway Avenue provides unique offerings to hungry customers.

Vega invested in her restaurant because she believes that downtown Lorain has the potential to become a tourist attraction like Put-in-Bay, thanks to its proximity to Lake Erie, and says that people shouldn’t have to drive to Cleveland or Sandusky to get the types of food she is offering at the Fresco Bistro.

“Our restaurant fills a gap in Lorain, allowing people to select what’s in their meals, choosing the proteins, grains, cheeses, and vegetables that they want to enjoy,” Vega says.

Thirsty? Customers can pick from various coffees, chai tea lattes, juices, smoothies, and more.

“You can add kale, spinach, or ginger, for example,” Vega says, “into your smoothies and juices, as well as Maca root, collagen, stevia, and proteins. Plus, we’re going to keep adding ingredients that you can include to boost your immune system.”

Beer and wine are also available, plus ACE Pineapple Cider, iced tea, and orange juice. For dessert options, there are excellent cinnamon rolls, plus cookies and croissants.

Fresco Bistro opened on February 2, 2020. Its location on Broadway is ideal for partnering with the Lorain Palace, adjacent to the Black River Landing where thousands of people enjoy festivals and concerts.

Shortly after the restaurant opened, the business temporarily closed because of COVID-19. It remained that way until June when they reopened on select days of the week with shorter hours.

“We were very happy with the number of customers we had during the first month,” Vega said, “and we look forward to when that can return.”

They are open for lunch Tuesdays through Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you can order online at fresco-bistro.business.site and then pick up your food, curbside. At some point, they may begin using Door Dash. Other options include dining-in and ordering by phone at (440) 288-1533.

The bar is named after the Lorain Brass & Bronze Foundry Company, which was located where Vega’s business is today. To honor our city’s industrial traditions and pay tribute to this part of Lorain’s history, the bar has brass and bronze decorating details, along with a wooden pallet bar that’s been repurposed for effect.

“This is a large space,” Vega says, “so people can socially distance in comfortable chairs.”

Once the restaurant can fully reopen, customers will then be able to easily go from there to the bar—and vice versa.

“I like to think of the restaurant as a place to enjoy delicious healthy foods, with the bar side being your guilty pleasure,” Vega said, “including with fried foods.”

There are regular drinks plus specials, including Mexican cocktails and a wonderful Peruvian brandy called “Pisco.” You can also enjoy pisco cocktails. The Brass and Bronze Foundry is currently open on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to close, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then again from 5 p.m. to close.

Sundays open up at noon and then stay open at least through 5 p.m.

“We’ve stayed open until 6 or 7 p.m.,” she says, “if customers are there.”

At the same time that Fresco Bistro opened, Vega also debuted an adjoining bar named Brass and Bronze Foundry Bar. There, she offers bar-type foods, such as chicken fingers and Korean tacos—offering a mixture of American choices with those having a Peruvian influence.

That way, she shares, people can choose from foods that are familiar or those that are more adventurous, such as tequeños or Peruvian-style ceviche, coctel de camarones, or salchipapas.

There is a fenced-in patio at the back of the restaurant and bar that can give diners a beautiful view of the Black River.

She will also have a front patio area when the time is right.

On the Fresco side of the establishment, there is a boutique that offers Peruvian baby alpaca clothing, handmade handbags, jewelry made from 950 silver, t-shirts, and handcrafted items from local artisans, as well as gift cards for sale.

Vega is optimistic about the future for her restaurant and bar, sharing that she plans to have live entertainment once it makes sense. She is also fully invested in and committed to the future of downtown Lorain.

During the last issue, we introduced the idea to share the human side of our Lorain Police Officers and attempt to reduce the tried dehumanization currently spreading throughout mainstream media and our world.

Quite often, people negate an officer's humanity while focusing on a uniform and the sense of authority it evokes. Yet, there is far more to an officer than his or her badge. Here is an introduction to another one of those people.

Les Palmer is the kind of guy you expect to encounter as your mechanic. His personality exudes a "You gotta problem?

Tell me, I can fix it" way about it. It’s not a coincidence he owns and appreciates classic cars. Back in the day, classic cars were built with steel for strength and endurance, and that's Les Palmer through and through.

His smile comes quick and easy. And the crinkles (not wrinkles) at the corners of his eyes are from how often he laughs—which is a lot, and it’s rather contagious.

As you will soon learn, there’s no pretense with Palmer. He is who he is, and throughout our time together, it was a pleasure conversing with him.

Now, let us introduce another man behind the badge: Les Palmer.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the job? l a c ol ni a r ol e h t @ | m o c .l a c ol ni a r ol

I enjoy wrenching on cars. I have rebuilt a '77 Camaro from the ground up and repaired others. I enjoy the challenge of finding a problem and fixing it. I enjoy NHRA Drag Racing. It amazes me how much power you can get out of these old school engines. I also like a little construction work. My wife shows me a picture and says, "Can WE make the room look like this?" Then she shows me an image from a magazine she has been reading. I just smile and say something like, "It'll make a mess, but we can do it. When do you want to look at the materials?" I never minded rolling up my sleeves and getting my hands dirty, whether it's for work, my home, or helping another person. There is a great deal of satisfaction in it. I also enjoy reading.

Do you have people who offer you support?

Yes. My wife Deb, who was a Lorain Police Dispatcher for 31 years and understands the job a great deal, is my biggest supporter and can be my hardest critic. She has always encouraged me to do better, take the next test, and finish my degree. I have close family members who understood my drive and supported me through it. I have coworkers and friends who also support me.

How have you built a support network?

God is my first thought. I thank God for opening the door and giving me the opportunity to lead those I work with and help the community I work for. By being me.

When asked why we, the police, or me, in general, why we do things the way we do, I take the time to explain. I advocate community relations, and what better way to practice what you preach than to take your time to explain to someone who wants to know? This also goes for those who I work with. I make myself available to anyone—coworkers or the public—who wants to talk, vent, or simply ask a question.

How long have you been an Officer?

I have been with Lorain Police for 23 + years. I was an officer in Connecticut for four years.

What people influenced your choice to become a police officer?

There was not one person who actually did that, but I have always looked up to officers. I knew they were there to help those who called for assistance. It was unfortunate, but my family had the need to call them more than once, and I was able to witness first hand the need for good police officers. After serving in the Marine Corps, I wanted to work in a structured environment that would be satisfying at the end of the day.

Yes. One would be President Truman. When he became president, he did what he had to do to end World War II. I am sure he didn't relish giving the go-ahead to drop the bomb, but he had to make the final decision. The second would be Colin Powell. I like his book, "It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership." It's an excellent book for those seeking any type of leadership role.

Are there any historical figures you admire?

What are some of the most distinctive moments during your career that have stuck with you?

There are downsides to this question. A flood of memories comes to mind, from arresting a murder suspect to giving CRP to a six-month-old infant.

Officers don't always talk about these things, but they happen. I recall arresting a female for a drugrelated offense. After court and her rehab, she made it a point to see me at the station. She apologized for being a pain that night and thanked me for arresting her and putting her on the road to recovery. I hope she is still clean and doing well. I also recall helping a juvenile who had an alcoholic mother he desperately wanted to get away from. I completely understood his plight. I can relate to this because my father was a bad alcoholic. I spoke on his behalf at court to make sure his side was heard.

What drives you to go to work everyday?

Wow, where do I start? I have always wanted to give back and help others. When I was working the road, it was arresting those who posed a threat to the public.

As I climbed the ladder within the department, I have tried to assist officers with growing in their careers. I feel that just because a person has been arrested doesn't necessarily make them a bad person, and I try to let younger officers know that—to be an advocate for excellence and cooperation between the community and the police.

What aspects of police work would you like to share with the community?

That it's not an easy job—Police officers are governed by federal and state laws, then by city ordinances and department policies and procedures. When an officer arrives at a scene, they take control of it for many reasons. That can be everything from calming someone down to giving first aid. Then they need to understand, we (officers) need to preserve evidence for future use if there will be criminal charges. We're not trying to push people around out there, but in many instances, they simply don't have the time to explain all the reasons why we are doing what we are doing.

Have you ever encountered a person that is acting hostile, but not violent? How did you handle the situation? l a c ol ni a r ol e h t @ | m o c .l a c ol ni a r ol

Several! As I am responding to the call, I remind myself time is on our side. During one incident, a male did commit domestic violence and knew he was going to be arrested. He was pacing back and forth in about a 6-8-foot area, saying not-so-pleasant things toward those present and giving indications he was going to fight. I let him vent about the situation, and he began to calm down. I recall telling him that just because he made a bad choice in the heat of the moment didn't make him a bad person. Do you feel the media portray police officers in an accurate way?

Not all the time. There are bad people out there, and bad things do happen. But without getting into all the data, I understand the need to report the news. But it does not always have to be negative. Yes, there are incidents that could have been handled better or just differently. But it appears the media goes out of their way to report police in a bad light without all of the facts. Or they show a 10-second clip from a video of an incident that was 20 minutes long. The audience sees and hears negative because that is what is shown. If they would give the same attention to the good that officers do, I feel a positive attitude toward police would be the result. Officers stop at lemonade stands, then tell everyone else on patrol to visit them. Some buy food for a homeless person, pay for gas for someone to get home, take up a collection to help a family in desperate need, or volunteer to patrol during special events. I am proud to say all of these things have been done by Lorain's finest over the years. I certainly don't think we are the exception, but the norm.

What positive changes have you seen in the community in the past few years?

Well, until COVID-19 raised its ugly head, it was the growth we were experiencing. The community was getting more small businesses to invest in the city of Lorain. Vacant buildings were being renovated into apartments, shops and new homes were going up. The community as a whole was giving more tips on illegal activity because they also want a better environment for their children and the city.

As I get to know more of the people behind the badges of our Lorain Police Department, I am reminded why I can have the safe and comfortable world I have grown accustomed.

I have now gotten to know two people who are out there protecting our freedom day-in and day-out, facing confrontation head-on, and then going home and leading lives like you and me.

The officers protecting our streets are our neighbors, our friends, someone's family.

If you see a police officer, start by thanking them. But then carry on a conversation, and get to know the person behind the uniform you see. What you discover may surprise you, just like it has done for me.

I continue to applaud and give my most heartfelt thank you to our Lorain Police Department. Thank you, and God bless you.

Celebrating the Community This Winter and Beyond with Main Street Lorain, Ohio

To kick off Small Business Saturday on November 28, many participating businesses had their doors open to welcome shoppers and guests and treat them to a cookie made by Spectrum Catering.

Along with the great shopping and dining, everyone enjoyed the holiday decorations, including the snowmen planters as part of the Main Street Lorain Winter Beautification Project.

The storefront windows and snow globe photo opp were huge hits, too. As the team looks forward to a bigger 2021 Cookie Crawl, it was great to see people enjoying the nice weather in a safe, sociallydistant atmosphere.

As the words unprecedented, pivot, change of plans, etc., became part of everyday vernacular, the directors of Main Street Lorain's board are excited to turn the calendar and welcome 2021. The team is proud of how it has navigated its first 14 months and a global pandemic and is ready to invite you to grow with them.

“We’ve learned so much and have grown as a tight-knit group since Main Street Lorain began, that we’re looking forward to the new year and new members,” said Kurt Hernon, president of Main Street Lorain and owner of Speak of the Devil. “So many people have thanked us for the work we’ve accomplished and have asked how they can help, and I just let them know by joining Main Street Lorain as member is the biggest support we can receive.”

Main Street Lorain is here to promote collaboration and celebration as a means of making downtown Lorain vibrant and accessible to residents and visitors of all ages.

The Lorain Historical Society is proud to be an active member of Main Street Lorain as this program honors historic preservation and beautification— definitely part of our mission as a historical society.

We also believe that Main Street helps to create a strong "sense of place," which has been so much a part of the heritage of the city of Lorain.
