From Our Family to Yours, When we set out to launch Lorain Local Magazine, we experienced setbacks just like other businesses do. Our dream of printing our premiere issue was unable to be realized due to challenges surrounding COVID-19, and it left our future as uncertain as everyone else's.

Like so many others, we adapted to new ways of existence, and we persevered on to the second issue. We were able to print a limited number of copies of that release, thanks to the wonderful support of our first official sponsors. And because of your continued readership and belief in our mission, we are very pleased to present our third issue.

The cover that appears now was the original cover set to unroll with Lorain Local's launch. However, we did not think the appropriate time to announce Lorainaissance should have coincided with the first worldwide pandemic in over a century. As it turns out, the timing of this with relation to the Italian Renaissance following the Dark Ages, coupled with post-plague social, economic, cultural, and religious impacts bodes an eerie similarity to life today.

There was no way we could have known that the future involved a pandemic when we coined Lorainaissance. Still, after six months of experiencing everything from social distancing to the injustices that are still present in our world, we now feel that everyone realizes we can always adapt to new ways of life just like we have since the dawn of time.

While it might not be exactly how we want to experience life, we have made adjustments that protect our today while promising to brighten our tomorrow.

The restrictions and guidelines currently in place will not last forever. And, while our summer looked different than we originally anticipated, our focus toward the brighter days on the horizon should keep us trekking toward the future together.

We believe that our community will continue to thrive from the residents and visitors who keep discovering our great lake city on our Great Lake coast. That will forever remain with your support and confidence in this city, embodying what it means to be Lorain Proud.

There will always be negativity in our world—that will never change. Though, if you focus on remaining positive and try to make the best out of whatever challenge you may face, you can persevere and overcome any obstacle presenting itself.

As we proceed on this journey together, we hope that you and those you know remain safe and continue sharing your love for Lorain with us. Whether it is someone taking pride in our city, our beautiful sunsets, the waterfall at Day's Dam, or something else captured while exploring our great lake city, we are excited to help you celebrate your discoveries all along the way.

Awaken History: The Duane Block

The Duane Building sits at 401 Broadway Avenue in the heart of our downtown. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is styled using Renaissance Revival architecture.

Its elaborate architectural design reflected the economic power and optimism of downtown Lorain and the general economy of the city just after the turn of the 20th century.

Built in 1906 for both commercial and residential use by architect, Hamilton E. Ford, it received its name after Duane Avenue—better known by us today as West Fourth Street.

On the main level, the Metzger & Robinson Dry Goods & Clothing Store served the public from 1906 to 1929. Following them was Hageman Shoe Company and Bond Clothing. The top two floors served as an apartment complex.

In 2002, a major fire broke out, destroying parts of the second floor, but the sandstone block foundation and major structural components were mostly unharmed.

The building re-opened to the public in 2004, and now houses new businesses and apartments contributing to the renaissance happening in our downtown.

Thanks to a public-private partnership involving a $2 million renovation, the building was restored, and much of the original architectural features were brought back to life.

My First Nine Months

In July of 2019, I received a call from my cousin, Commissioner Sharon Sweda, suggesting I should run for mayor of Lorain. Honestly, the thought had never crossed my mind. My wife Debora and daughter Jaclyn encouraged me to run, and here I am today, the mayor of Lorain.

I have been in Lorain my entire life, and I am happy I am in a position to give back to the city that has given so much to me. I was a practicing attorney for over 42 years and never held a political office before. To say the least, I had no idea what I was getting into.

On January 1, 2020, I met the police chief at Lorain City Hall, and he showed me to my office on the seventh floor. I was amazed at the view of Lake Erie and overwhelmed by everything that sat on my desk before me. I thought to myself, is it too late to quit?

But like everything in life, I knew I had to get motivated and learn the job quickly. It happened when I started as a teacher in Lorain in 1972, and it happened again when I started as an attorney in 1979.

I knew better days were ahead.

Mayor of Lorain

During the campaign, the number one issue from citizens was the cost of water and wastewater in our city. That became my first priority from day one in the mayor's office.

I went back to 2017 when fixed costs were increased and determined that these fixed costs had to be reduced. The fixed cost for water was determined by law by the Safety Service Director, and the fixed cost for wastewater was determined by City Council.

I am happy to say that both fixed costs were reduced back to 2017 levels, and an audit of our Utilities Department is now being conducted by the State Auditor's Office. Hopefully, the audit will make our Utilities Department more efficient, and that will result in cost savings to our citizens.

Then, COVID-19 hit and changed everything.

We all had to deal with a pandemic that had not hit the United States for over 100 years. I had to have meetings with the governor, the director of Lorain County Public Health, as well as mayors and city managers throughout Ohio, and mayors throughout the entire United States.

I had to declare a state of emergency in the city of Lorain and close City Hall to the public.

Employees entering were given temperature screens, and every effort was made to make sure people were not bringing the virus into the building. As of this writing, these measures resulted in no new cases in City Hall, and our workforce remained virus-free.

An issue did come up with our trash hauling company, Republic Services. They informed cities they served that bulk pickup would not continue during the public health crisis. I decided to review the city's contract with Republic and see if the citizens had any protection from the unilateral determination by Republic. I also contacted Lorain's Health Commissioner, Dave Covell, for his opinion. I then threatened to terminate the contract with Republic if they did not comply with their contractual obligations. As a result, not only citizens in Lorain, but also citizens throughout Lorain County had their bulk waste picked up.

To say the least, it has been an unexpected and yet exciting time to be the mayor of Lorain. We have all learned to live with face masks, Zoom calls, and social distancing. It has shown all of us that we can change and that some changes may also be beneficial in the future.

I still believe it is a great day in the city of Lorain, and I continue to be Lorain Proud and proud of our city workers, first responders, and especially proud of the citizens of Lorain.

The Summer Market Finds New Home in The International City Lorain Community welcomes event, organizers to Black River Landing

Curated collectibles, handmade must-haves, a fresh farmers market, and cheese-covered lobster tots were just some of the highlights from The Summer Market this year at Black River Landing on July 18 and 19.

For the first time in Lorain, this one-of-a-kind outdoor shopping experience filled the festival grounds with a variety of merchandise and food vendors. After spending 14 years in Avon Lake, Ohio, a recent partnership between Lorain Port Authority and the nonprofit Girls Give Back made this move to The International City possible.

In addition to navigating a new site, organizer Erin Stack and her crew were forced to switch gears earlier this year when the coronavirus pandemic shut down the state and added a plethora of new regulations for them to consider. Stack said due to the uncertainty, planning and promoting wasn't able to go full force until about six weeks out from the event.

"Everything was against us that weekend," said Stack.

"The weather, the pandemic. The cards were stacked against us, but in the end, it was just perfect."

The sunny scorcher of a weekend presented temperatures in the 90s on both Saturday and Sunday.

Guidelines related to the pandemic, such as social distancing, also led to fewer vendors. Still, Stack said that it didn't take away from the positive experiences shared by customers and merchants alike.

"People loved the spaciousness of the location," she said, noting the event had outgrown Veterans Memorial Park in Avon Lake. "The customers definitely liked the ability to breathe a little bit while they were shopping."

Stack said vendors loved that the site allowed for easy setup, and they appreciated the opportunity to participate as many other similar events have been canceled this season. The Summer Market organizers worked very closely with Lorain County Public Health leading up to the weekend as safety was a top priority.

"Everybody was so respectful.

There were no incidents.

Everybody kept their distance and were great."

New this year to the event were the farmers market and two cocktail bars cleverly called the "Docktail Bar" and "Upper Deck."

"I was really impressed with both the customers and the vendors," Stack said.

Stack said the activity on the water, such as boating and paddle boarding, provided the perfect backdrop for their event.

Although they weren't able to reach their goal this year as far as funds raised, partial donations have already been made to Blessing House, ACES, and a local family in need.

ACES, Achievement through Community Education and Support, is led by Mike Ferrer and offers Lorain High School students guidance and opportunities to get involved in the community.

"They were amazing," Stack said of the students who spent the weekend parking cars, helping vendors, and picking up trash.

"Those kids were so kind, smiling all the time and so willing to help.

They were a perfect match for our event."

Stack said she is grateful for the outpouring of support she received from the Lorain community. Whether it ACES, the Lorain Fire Department, or the local media outlets, Stack said everyone was great to work with.

"Every single person in Lorain welcomed us with open arms," she said.

"We were very happy with how The Summer Market went in year one here at Black River Landing," said Port Authority Executive Director, Tom Brown. "Erin and her team delivered a wonderful shopping experience that provided somewhat of an escape during a difficult summer season. We look forward to working with The Summer Market to plan for 2021 and look to build a long-lasting partnership that cultivates a premier annual event that everyone can look forward to."

Looking ahead to the future, next year's plans for The Summer Market are to be determined as the COVID-19 situation continues to develop, but continuing the partnership is a no brainer for the Lorain Port Authority.

Creating a Stronger

Community Through the Arts

An empty canvas creates a space for endless opportunities just like:

a new roll ofafilm, sample of fabric,

a blank sheet of paper,

the strum of a new chord,

an empty stage.

Art can take form through many mediums, providing an artist with an opportunity to be heard. It's when people feel heard that their connection to the community and to their neighbor is deepened.

Time has been devoted to asking how we bring people to Lorain.

The arts provide an answer to how we can invest in the people who are here to develop a community that thrives from within.

Utilizing the arts to push our local economy forward expands the realm of possibilities for our youth, entrepreneurs, and countless others. Every day throughout the country, more than 100,000 nonprofit arts and culture organizations act as economic drivers— creating an industry that supports jobs, generates government revenue, and is the cornerstone of our tourism industry.1 In several ways, this city is a blank canvas of its own waiting to be filled by those within our culturally rich community—similar to Antonio Barrios, whose creative soul and passion for culture led him to develop a permanent home for the arts in Lorain.

The Stage Has Been Set The Lorain Arts Council, which began as a subcommittee of Lorain Growth Corporation, is an arts organization dedicated to the recognition and awareness of the arts. Its home at 737 Broadway Avenue has been a part of the community for more than 12 years.

Under President Antonio Barrios, LAC has been offering contributions to the art world for more than a decade. They have hosted live events, fashion shows, comedy shows, art and photography galleries, art classes, concerts, and more.

In addition, LAC has supported the community through several city-wide events, creating a float for the Lorain International Festival Parade and adding murals now on display on the back of their building overlooking Black River Landing.

involvement in local and regional events, together with the creation of occasions for the Arts to be enjoyed, displayed and performed, the Lorain Arts Council will promote the growth of the arts. Together we can make a difference."

Scrolling through LAC's Facebook account, you will see that they have succeeded in doing just that. Photos displayed on their page showcase the gathering of people of all ages and cultural backgrounds participating in LAC events. These photos serve as proof of the social value of both culture and art together.

As an artist himself, Antonio understands how important it is to support the imaginative and creative spirit of those in the community. He has witnessed the positive change in communities once a focus on the arts was given to a particular region.

Referencing Cleveland's Tremont, Ohio City, and Gordon Square neighborhoods, he stated that once art was integrated into these areas, they became locations that many people wanted to visit.

The allure created by artists boosted local economies, with many becoming more financially viable after. Urban growth is possible through the arts, and in a "post" COVID-19 world, creating a sense of community—although a tougher task—is more important than ever.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Thinking "Outside" the Box Creatives are among those severely affected by the COVID-19 crisis, leading many to find innovative ways to engage with the community. Adapting to this new state-of-the-art world led one local comedian to the idea of hosting outdoor comedy right here in his hometown.

Having performed around the country from New York to Los Angeles, and been featured on HBO, Comedy Central, and NBC, Ramon Rivas II began hosting weekly Comedy in the Park events at our very own Oakwood Park.

Comedy in the Park provided Ramon with a way to host an event for Lorain while adhering to the restrictions placed on social gatherings. It also allowed struggling comedians a venue to keep their audience entertained and the arts alive.

He acquired all the necessary items, including radio transmitters so attendees could tune in from their cars, sourced comedic talent to join him, and began spreading the word.

The community responded positively, and soon Comedy in the Park expanded to host shows at the Lorain Arts Council's outdoor stage.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT Quarantine postponed and canceled numerous LAC events, and they even spent a large amount of time completely closed to the public. Fortunately, the comedy shows demonstrated a resurgence of the arts in the community; the stage was set, and the people came—they even brought fold-up chairs.

"It feels good to community build in the community where I'm from," Ramon said. "All it takes to build a scene is spaces and people."

Ramon's acts have included comics such as Mary Santora, Rob Ward, Brett Thomas, and Maria DiPerna. John Armstrong, Amber Maeda, and David Morales are other comedians who have also taken the Oakwood Park and LAC stages.

Together, Ramon and the Lorain Arts Council plan to host shows moving forward. They will be adjusting the schedule to fit the ever-changing climate, and with our support, we can help make sure the show lives on.

The Lorain Arts Council is an arts organization funded through donations, sponsorships, and grants.

Ramon and his comics separately receive contributions from their generous audience members and welcome donations to help keep our community laughing.

Who Doesn't Love Ice Cream?

Especially on a warm, muggy Sunday in August!

With so many things turned upside-down in our world due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Lorain Historical Society's Development Committee was determined to preserve the annual tradition of an ice cream social. Their plans in 2020 were to engage a wider portion of Lorain residents, but the question remained: How can this be accomplished safely this year?

To the rescue was Maria's Ice Cream Wagon!

Prayers from Maria Children's Glioma Cancer Foundation is a nearby charity that is well-known in Lorain County for its beautiful sunflower field planted year after year along state Route 2 in Avon, Ohio. Their beauty has expanded, and they now have a second field located near Cedar Point, in bloom at a different time of the season than their original location.

Earlier this year, Prayers from Maria purchased an ice cream truck that can be rented by individuals and groups as another fun way to reach out to the community and raise funds. The truck also helps to benefit their mission to support global research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for childhood brain tumors, known as gliomas. They also seek to raise awareness about this disease while bringing hope to children and families currently facing it.

On Sunday, August 9, the Lorain Historical Society and Prayers from Maria joined forces to bring ice cream to children and adults throughout the city of Lorain.

To make the event even sweeter, the Historical Society collected donations from members and friends and provided the ice cream novelties for free to children ages 18 and below.

Contributions to reach this goal came from far and wide as everyone wanted children to have free ice cream that day. The outpouring of support was so tremendous that the donations covered all the children who visited Maria's Ice Cream Wagon on August 9. Money was also available for gifting to other area organizations.

ACES, led by Mike Ferrer, taking a break for a photo during the event at the Lorain Historical Society.

Other beneficiaries included Lorain County Community Action Agency, Neighborhood Alliance, Genesis House, and El Centro de Servicios Sociales. These organizations promised to provide a special treat for the children in Lorain who are served by their expansive programming. Additional proceeds also benefitted Prayers from Maria and the Lorain Historical Society.

On the day of the event, Maria's Ice Cream Wagon spent time at the Carnegie Center—home of the Historical Society—from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. For the remainder of the afternoon, people visited other locations throughout Lorain to receive their ice cream, savor time seeing one another (socially distanced, of course), and enjoy music provided by the talented violinist, Pablo "NeNo" Oquendo II. The coordinator of the event and Trustee of the Lorain Historical Society, Tamika Bonilla, was assisted throughout the day by Historical Society staff and ACES, Achievement through Community Education and Support.

From there, the ice cream truck moved on to the east side with a stop at Longfellow School. There, families drove up to the school for their ice cream before Prayers from Maria and the Lorain Historical Society concluded the day at Oakwood Park in historic South Lorain.

While this was an ideal solution to the problems COVID-19 presented the original ice cream social plans, members of the Historical Society intend on doing this again in 2021.

With or without the pandemic, this was a perfect way to bring ice cream to the wider community of Lorain and share the mission of the Historical Society with all of our families.

Maria's Ice Cream Wagon proceeded to Lakeview Park South, and families there enjoyed the sweet treats as a cool break from a game of baseball or tennis. Families even joined from across the street at Lakeview Park Beach as the sounds from NeNo's violin guided them toward the event.

The Spotlight Awaits

ROCK BEAT The first practice room sports a bright yellow piano as an ode to The Beatles, aptly named after their legendary song, Yellow Submarine.

The Purple Rain Room features umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and posters of Prince's Raspberry Beret album and stacked compact cassette tapes displaying a partial Prince discography.

The largest room in Rock Town houses the stage, built

by Everett Query, and features The Dark Side of the Moon memorabilia. A tribute is paid to The Wizard of Oz because it was described that playing The Dark Side of the Moon album along with The Wizard of Oz movie lines up like a perfectly mixed soundtrack.

"I thought, I would love to have a place kids can rehearse. Some people have never been on stage, so we could have a little concert here as a rehearsal just to get them used to being up there," Jaclyn said.

At first, she thought she would add a curtain to allow for the full effect of performing, but when taking a closer look, she realized that the design brought a permanent spotlight to the performer at center stage.

When you first enter Suite D in the Duane Building, you are welcomed by a place where people can write and play music, collaborate, and listen to vintage vinyl albums. There are inspirational posters on the walls ranging from Elvis to Billie Eilish — just waiting to inspire you the way they have done for Rock Town Music Academy's founder and Lorain-native, Jaclyn Bradley.

Formerly home to a CPA office, the colorful accents, bold patterns, and finishing touches throughout the space now offer tributes to musicians of all genres throughout history.

"Janet Garcia was the mastermind behind the decor," Jaclyn shared.

"She had all the ideas with the cool shapes and the albums on the walls.

She's really talented."

ROCK BEAT Jaclyn felt like Lorain has needed a music school since Driscol's Music Company closed in 2014. While visiting home from Europe about a year ago, she decided to offer private voice lessons and promoted them through social media. Within 48 hours, she had 16 students.

When she finally moved back to Lorain at the beginning of this year, Jaclyn's mission to provide kids and adults with the opportunity to make music blossomed one day at a time.

She was initially looking for a studio to give voice lessons, but once Jaclyn saw her current space in the Duane Building, her ideas morphed.

She then decided to bring in guitar, piano, and percussion instructors to expand the offerings and provide more to the community.

"It kind of created itself with the need and the opportunity, and a vision of many like-minded people who came together to create this really fun space."

Within two weeks of opening, Rock Town had 23 students enrolled for lessons taking place during their two days open per week. The students' ages range from six to 73 years and include mother-daughter duos, first responders, and many people marking items off of their bucket lists.

"It's always been a neat space since we started creating the school, but now having the students here is really exciting because they just bring such light to this space."

ROCK BEAT Jaclyn always enjoyed music and performed in numerous musicals growing up. She developed a love of classical music during her teen years, which prepared her for studying opera in college at Indiana University.

Following school, she wanted to write music and express herself further than classical seemed to allow, so she moved to New York City and joined a rock band. There, she started to write music, and between her time in New York and Los Angeles, she recorded a few albums.

Eventually, Jaclyn began writing for TV and film.

TLC and HGTV have featured some of her songs, and she was Danny Bonaduce's assistant while she was in LA. She was involved with two seasons of the VH1 show, Breaking Bonaduce, where she met the right people to help land her songs on the soundtracks of other TV shows.

After living in Europe for the past five years, Jaclyn has moved back home, where she is thankful to be able to provide a local place for everyone to take music lessons right in the heart of our downtown.

"I was so inspired by all of the growth happening," Jaclyn said.

"Lorain has had so much potential, and it has such heart—the people are so amazing—but it was always struggling.

Then, suddenly I came home, and it wasn't struggling anymore.

There are people taking initiative, and it wasn't just talk—it was action.

by Kelly Boyer Sagert Going back in time by a few decades, a bunch of self-professed “Beach Bums” began to regularly gather at Lakeview Beach on the weekends. They were hikers, golfers, windsurfers, bodybuilders, and bicyclists who enjoyed being out in the sunshine.

One day, a Beach Bum shared interest in a mud volleyball tournament taking place in Norwalk, Ohio, and this became an annual event at Lakeview for about five years.

"They would dress up in funny clothing and hats, they started a kazoo marching band with a song that was played when they had to participate in the tournament. The women would stand by the pits and cheer for the men and the men would return the favor.

They brought in cooking grills, put their tents in a huge circle, made signs, and one member would bring a jar of sand and spread it around the camp"

Fast-forwarding to today, there’s both a longstanding youth volleyball league and adult volleyball league. Plus, there are also annual tournaments held in June and July. Although the June 2020 tournament was canceled because of COVID, tournament directors Jeff and Karen Yeager collaborated with Lorain County Metro Parks and Lorain County Public Health to successfully hold the tournament in July.

“Typically,” Jeff says, “we get about 200 two-person teams for our tournaments. This includes local people, as well as those from around Ohio and neighboring states. This year, we had about 120 teams, which still made for a great event.”

Adjustments made for COVID included a mask requirement when not playing, volleyballs cleaned between matches, sanitization centers, staggered start times to avoid congestions, people refraining from gathering in large groups, and so forth.

“We’re very appreciative of all the help that the park employees gave us,” Jeff says, “and all went very smoothly." In the excitement of the competition, people occasionally needed to be reminded about the mask rule, but “people were all pretty cooperative and happy that we could make this tournament happen.” l a c ol ni a r ol e h t @ | m o c .l a c ol ni a r ol Lorain Local Magazine | page 32

In a typical year, there are also weekly leagues held during June and July. The youth leagues, with middle school and high school participants, play on Tuesdays, with about 80 to 90 teams. The adults play on Thursdays, with about 60 to 70 teams involved.

Although rules are provided, these volleyball leagues have a relaxed atmosphere without officials.

“The goal,” Jeff says, “is to get out and have fun. With the adults, there are people with a wide range of abilities, and that’s OK. With the youth, this can help them learn more about the game

and

increase

their

skills,

also

simply having fun and building relationships with teammates.”

Interestingly enough, this echoes the philosophy of the original Beach Bums, which went as follows:

“The group accepted all people with open arms, there were no judgments, no social labels stamped on one’s forehead.”

Lorain's Back-to-School Giveaway Over 100 backpacks, plus haircuts and more!

The sentiment from Cisco Pagán is a simple one shared by many in the community. He is one of several who has chosen to give his time and talents to answer a call for help. As the COVID-19-affected school year's uncertainty comes into focus, the citizens once again rally to the side of our most valuable assets: the children. That rally is led by a passionate Lorain City Councilman and a man with a strong love for softball and South Lorain.

Jorge Villegas organized the Inaugural Sandlot Boyz Back 2 School Giveaway at his home away from home, Oakwood Park. Jorge has been instrumental in reviving the park itself and reenergizing his community's love for the neighborhood gem. Softball tournaments have been a staple this summer, and the park is returning to its former glory.

As is his nature, Jorge is as concerned for the people in and around the park as he is for the park itself. This event was Jorge's way of bringing it all together for an honorable purpose, and a request to his friends on Facebook was all it took to get the ball rolling.

Barbers, stylists, food trucks, school supplies, backpacks, a softball tournament, and prizes; A simple formula, a big impact.

Judge Sherry Glass Strohsack of Lorain County Common Pleas Court answered the call. Sherry grew up directly across the street from Oakwood Park. The park played an enormous part in not only her development as an athlete but in her deep-rooted sense of community. The Oakwood Park Recreation Program was a summertime oasis for her.

"The program usually consisted of two young adults running crafts and

baseball/softball practices and games out of a small shack and a picnic

table—but that's all we needed. And let me stress the part that we needed

it. My mom was a single mom who worked long hours, like many of the

neighborhood kids. The park was our second home where we always had our

advisors and coaches to talk to—whom I will never forget—Allison, Lucas,

and Coach Perkins—they were all mentors to us," Sherry recalls.

SOUTHSIDE PRIDE Sherry did not let the fact that she only knew Jorge from his Facebook posts deter her. She contacted him and offered to help in any way possible. On the day of the event, she was there inperson, organizing supplies and handing out backpacks.

Along with Sherry at the supply table were Sara and Mario Benjamin. The Benjamins journeyed back to Lorain from Cuyahoga County to support the community that means so much to them.

Sara, like Jorge and Sherry, also has strong ties to Oakwood Park that began with softball.

Sara attended the illustrious Lorain Southview High School and played for the school's softball team. As her class valedictorian, Sara knows the importance that simple items like school supplies can play in young students' success.

Sara takes the education of children in Lorain to heart. Her area of expertise is computer science, which she previously co-taught at Lorain High School. She is passionate about steering students in Lorain toward careers in computer science and technology. The nature of Lorain's children to be curious, creative, well-rounded, and adaptive makes them great candidates for such a career path.

There are tech jobs to be filled, and she is working toward filling them with greater numbers of Lorain graduates. Not only did Sara fill and distribute backpacks at the event, but she was also able to supply the grand prize for the event—a new Xbox One for one lucky family. As families arrived to collect supplies and receive a haircut, if desired, their names were entered into the prize raffle.

Cisco Pagán and a troop of other barbers and stylists provided the haircuts. The volunteers arrived in great spirits and were eager to get to work.

"I brought a team with me, and we were able to deliver. We blessed about 20

kids, and I'm good with that," said Pagán, with a sense of pride and humility.

Much like the other volunteers, Pagán's sense of community, and the belief that South Lorain is like a big extended family, is what drives him to do for the children. They did not let the heat or the unorthodox nature of outdoor haircuts in a park prevent them from giving their absolute best. More importantly, the smiles on the children's faces, as they left with full backpacks and faith in their community, made everything worthwhile.

As others—like Lorain's 6th Ward City Councilman, Rey Carrion—stopped in to contribute more supplies and show their support for the event, they were each captivated by the energy in the park that day. Jorge did his best to greet everyone and express his sincere gratitude for their support of his efforts. He encouraged them to stop by one of the food vendors or take in a few innings of a game.

For all his successes on the field that day, it was the thing he wasn't going to receive a trophy for that made him most proud: This event is the first of many.

As the school year progresses, and families adapt to the challenges presented by the uncertainty of life in a pandemic, we can be sure that there will always be people ready to answer the call. This sense of comfort is, and always will be, an undeniable truth of the Lorain community; This is the beauty of Lorain Locals.

Burgers, Cruise-ins, and Social Distancing in Style How one area club manages to remain creative and resourceful duing times of continued uncertainty

In the time of social distancing, you may not think something involving car meets would be possible. However, for some local car lovers, creativity, enthusiasm, and collaboration took shape one summer evening for the first-ever Lorain County Euro Meet & Eat in The DownLo. With a familiar presence in Lorain since they organized in 2015, LC Euro Meet has offered an outlet for European car enthusiasts to share similar interests, explore our Great Lake coast, and form a bond like no other—a relationship more like family.

When Chef Joe Adorno of BorikĂŠn Juke Joint approached club organizers Jeremy Swiger, Chris Fallon, and Michael Kokinda, Jr. about hosting a meet near Broadway, they jumped at the idea for its seemingly endless advantages. l a c ol ni a r ol e h t @ | m o c .l a c ol ni a r ol

"I love the new downtown area," said Kokinda.

"I have been waiting for this most of my adult life."

Typically, the club's events begin taking place as soon as the weather starts to turn nice in the spring. But the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 took its toll on many factors impacting their organization this year. Racetracks have not opened for the season, and people are still worried about any size social gatherings.

The idea to host an event situated on Black River Lane made a lot of sense to everyone involved, with the previously limited options for the car owners beyond just cruising around town. Plenty of space and a convenient location to Broadway Avenue provided an opportunity to create an event with more to offer than the usual car meet.

The event took place over three hours, allowing participants to explore Lorain’s downtown business district during the meet. Afterward, some chose to head home. Other attendees took an interest in our newly bustling downtown, including the walkability to other activities taking place that evening—like musician Anthony Scrofano performing outside The Palace Theater.

The adjacent stretch of Broadway is designated as part of Lorain's Outdoor Refreshment Area, permitting visitors to carry and responsibly consume alcoholic beverages in plastic cups. With the new Ariel Broadway Hotel & Event Center nearby, this presented another exciting and new opportunity for visitors to enjoy.

Chef Joe offered dining specials on tacos and burgers during the event, and Ganley Westside Volkswagen and HS Tuning of Westlake provided giveaway items for those in attendance. T-shirts were also available for purchase for $10, and proceeds benefitted the car club.

LC Euro Meet hopes to gather together more often and continue bringing new faces into the mix over time. Members own Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Mini Cooper, and BMW vehicles, but the club welcomes drivers of any European-made car.

"We are more than just a car group. It's like a family," says Kokinda. "We always try to help each other out with our projects and our daily drivers. That's why the group was started—just out finding like-minded individuals who love the car scene and are down to give a helping hand when needed."

How one business is inspiring others to come to Lorain

Pulp Juice and Smoothie Bar owner, Drew Isaac, decided to expand his business into the Lorain area to seek out the potential growth the city has to offer. Located at 5305 North Leavitt Road, Pulp has brought a vibrant presence to Lorain's west side.

"There's nothing like a Pulp in Lorain. It's sort of underserved in the health food area," Issac said. "We've had a large fan base from our Avon location request that we venture out into the Lorain and Amherst areas, so we decided to do it!"

With the recent revitalization of the city, Isaac thought it was the best time to step into the Lorain area and serve up delicious smoothies and juices. The health food chain has other locations all around Ohio, including their original location in Kent.

Pulp's warm and inviting ambiance allows the customer to feel a sense of community that offers a health-minded menu. When stepping into Pulp, you're surrounded by upbeat music, bright colors, and tantalizing fragrances that immerse you in a positive atmosphere.

Issac has played a big part in bringing this positivity into the city during the pandemic, while continuing with his grand opening amid the restrictions. During the pandemic, Issac has been able to keep steady business and remain confident for the future.

"We've been very COVID-minded about everything we do since it's a quick-service type of restaurant. It's a grab-and-go setup making it efficient and safe for you and our staff."

They have been a big help in providing jobs during the pandemic for many workers—offering an inclusive and cheerful work environment different than most. The staff is always friendly and ready to help, making your experience at Pulp quick, efficient, and fun.

Pulp is different than the typical fastfood restaurant—serving up a wide range of options from freshly pressed juices, smoothies, and wraps, to specialty health shots and bowls. All of their products are made from 100 percent natural juices and other ingredients with no added sugars or preservatives, making it a healthful destination.

This quick-service eatery is one of the first shops to offer a health-minded menu in the Lorain area.

NEW LORAIN DEVELOPMENT

With Pulp opening up a storefront near Meijer Supermarket, it has brought many new visitors into the area, making it a popular destination not only for the locals but for visitors from neighboring communities.

Pulp offers a one-of-a-kind menu that provides a flavor profile geared toward just about everyone's taste.

"There's something for everyone here. We've got tropical smoothies, berry smoothies, fruit juices, ginger shots, and even a selection of savory wraps."

For the proud owner of the Lorain location, there's been positive feedback from the community as well.

"Everyone's been fantastic so far. We love to hear from the customers and our supportive fan base in-store and through social media," Issac said. "My wife and I are very hands-on owners, so we like to be present in the business. And here at Pulp, it's definitely a customer-first scenario."

A Summer Collaboration Offering

Fun in the Sun

A peek at the newest seasonal addition at Lakeview Park Beach

Lorain Public Library System, Lorain County Metro Parks, and the City of Lorain collaborated on a new summer addition to Lakeview Park this year, called the Little Library on the Lake.

Though it is called a library, it does not offer the traditional collection of books, magazines, and DVDs. Instead, this library houses all kinds of games, educational activities, and sporting equipment for all ages. It is provided to our community with support from Lorain County Public Health and the State Library of Ohio.

"We want to offer things that people can use right there at the park that encourage fun, fitness, and learning," said Anastasia Diamond-Ortiz, CEO of LPLS.

When it was open for the season, items were available to check out for free using an LPLS library card. They were available for a one-day checkout, due back before closing that day. The exception was for the stargazing kits and birdwatching kits, available for checkout for seven days. Unfortunately, none of the items offered as a part of this library are able to be held or renewed, but everything is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The structure itself is a 20-foot cargo container refurbished by The Rustbelt Welding Company out of Cleveland.

It now has a sliding entry door, wood flooring, wall paneling, and skylights made from boat hatches.

The exterior wrap was designed by LPLS Graphic Artist, Rob Musser, and adhered by Pro Auto Wraps out of Wadsworth, Ohio. In addition, the Little Library on the Lake provides free Wi-Fi access up to 150 yards away, depending on the device type. Wi-Fi will remain available year round, 24 hours per day.

"This is a great addition to the Lakeview Park experience," says Jim Ziemnik, Director of Lorain County Metro Parks.

"These items will allow people to get outside and have some fun while still social distancing and staying safe."

A special donation station will be set up at the game by our Lorain Walmart. The station will accommodate everyone wishing to donate much-needed supplies to Valor Home. Thanks to this setup, purchases of new socks, T-shirts, and underwear can be made and donated right at the field.

This year's game will not only bring Lorain's safety forces together, but it will also help to rally Lorain residents to help support our veterans in need. Our safety forces will also take pride in knowing that this game will leave our city just a little more unified than before.

The focus of this year's game is on the military veterans in our community. The event will benefit Valor Home Lorain, an organization supporting veterans who are homeless or are otherwise in need of shelter, supplies, and other services. The winning team's union will donate $100, and the losing team's union will donate $200.
