What’s on the ballot?

JASON HAWK EDITOR

Don't make the mistake of skipping the May 7 primary election. Turnout always takes a hit during spring votes. However, there are many issues on the ballot that deserve your attention. In-person absentee voting is already open, so make your voice heard: You can vote at the Lorain County Board of Elections office, 1985 North Ridge Rd. East, Lorain. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays from through Friday, May 3; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 4; 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, May 5; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, May 6. The polls will be open from 6:30 a.m.to 7:30 p.m. on the day of the election. Issue 2: Brownhelm Township Township trustees are asking for a two-mill renewal for five years to support emergency services — both firefighters and ambulance crews.

It would raise an estimated $110,267 per year and cost you $66.09 per year for every $100,000 worth of property you own.

Issue 3: Lorain Port Authority The port authority runs Black River Landing, Riverside Park, and Lakeside Park, runs shuttle boats, hosts parties like Rockin' on the River, and launches fireworks on the Fourth of July. The agency promotes commerce and tourism on Lake Erie — and chances are you have probably enjoyed boating and other fun along the Lorain shoreline. The five-year renewal asks for one mill that would raise an estimated $815,363 per year. It would cost $28.80 per year for every $100,000 you own. Issue 4: North Ridgeville Library The library's existing levy makes up 83 percent of its operating revenues and if a 1.91-mill renewal fails, it will mean drastic cuts to services.

All library programming, including story times, would end. Sunday and some evening and morning hours would be eliminated. Materials purchases would be slashed. Drive-up window services would end. The five-year renewal would generate nearly $1.37 million per year and would cost residents $47.01 per year for every $100,000 worth of property owned.

Issue 5: Oberlin Public Library Up for a third time since 2004, the library's operating levy accounts for about a third of its annual budget. Oberlin voters have overwhelmingly supported the past two renewals. The 1.5-mill measure would generate $285,921 per year for five years — that's about a quarter of the library's annual budget. It would not pay for any special projects, said director Darren McDonough. "We're just treading water," he said. "Every year the state funding goes down a little ELECTION PAGE A2
