Park Updates CONNECT TO A CAUSE

The Community Foundation of Lorain County is yet again hosting Connect to a Cause. This event is a 12-hour fundraising competition that enables community members to donate directly to the local charities of their choice. Organizations like the Lorain County Metro Parks benefit from generous donations and receive a portion of funding match from the Community Foundation. In 2020, the Lorain County Metro Parks received over $14,000 through this campaign.

Connect to a Cause 2021 takes place on Thursday, September 16.

This year, our campaign efforts will directly benefit our Raptor Center at Carlisle Visitor Center.

• The Raptor Center has been able to operate solely on donations since 2006.

• At this time, seven non-releasable birds call the Raptor Center home.

• On average, it costs $25 a day to feed our seven birds. This cost does not include medications or veterinary fees.

On September 16, donations will be accepted via credit/debit card at www.peoplewhocare.org/c2c2021. To donate by check, please endorse to Community Foundation. Checks must be postmarked or delivered in-person to the Foundation office (9080 Leavitt Road, Elyria OH 44035) by 8:00 pm on September 16.

To ensure the safety of our actors and patrons we produced our season entirely outdoors. In the adventure that is learning how to move things from the comfort of our theatre into the great outdoors, we have learned a lot and we look forward to keeping outdoor theatre in our coming seasons. We end our season with Eric Coble’s “Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe” in the Bacon Woods Amphitheatre at Vermilion River Reservation.

Unlike our previous shows, all three performances will start at 7:00pm to ensure nightfall makes an appearance at each show. For those looking to get into the spooky season spirit, it doesn’t get better than this.

Follow a footpath from the Fish Creek bridge to view this scenic creek from the circular platform. The overlook is southwest of the Fish Creek bridge.

Make time for a fall Lake Erie sunset! Century Park in Lorain is one of our newest park locations. Plenty of benches can be found along the ridge providing a wonderful sunset viewing opportunity.

Recreation Get Physical with the Lorain County Metro Parks Join us every Wednesday through September on our weekly guided kayak trips! These are guided paddling trips with all equipment provided including life-jacket, paddle, and boat. Participants are not required to take a level one class prior to trip. However, we do suggest participants to have previous paddling experience. Open to ages 18 and up (16-17 with participating adult). A brief skills refresher will be provided prior to each trip. For over 20 years, Lorain has been a site for the “Spirit of America” youth boating education program.

Lorain County Metro Parks became the sponsoring organization for this program in 2015 and today continues to provide the program PREMIER YOUTH BOATING EDUCATION free of charge to Lorain County students.

LORAIN COUNTY METRO PARKS While the COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from facilitating the program in 2020, we were able to get back on the water this summer! The program included the Ohio Boating Education Course and a water safety and boat rescue session at the Splash Zone. They also spent four days on the water during boating camp at the Lorain Harbor Boat Club. Students learned how to operate powerboats, sailboats, and personal watercraft.

Students also took part in on-water paddling activities including kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle boarding. In addition, students spent an afternoon touring the Lorain Coastguard station and boats. In all, we had 17 “Spirit of America” 2021 graduates.

Drive slowly in the comfort of your vehicle along the Halloween Trail to enjoy the playfully spooky attractions, which should take approximately 20 minutes.

SUPPLIES: • Black shirt and pants • Two 2 liter bottles of the same shape • Paint color of your choice • Black tape (or any colored tape will do) • String • Swimming goggles • Swim fins if you have them!

INSTRUCTIONS 1. This costume is easy because it contains items you are likely to already have around the house!

2. Wash out, dry, and remove the label from bottles.

3. Paint both bottles and their caps the same color (ideally, they will match the goggles you have!)

4. Lay 1 large piece of string longways down each bottle, so they are even.

5. Use your colored tape to create three rings around each bottle, as seen in the photo, taping the string to the bottles.

6. Tie each string end together to create a loop for each bottle.

7. Tape the two bottles together on the side the string is taped. Air tank pack completed!

8. Add your black clothes, swim fins, and goggles, and you are ready to trick or treat homemade style!

Microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds, stirring until melted. If it’s not smooth and melty, return it to the microwave for another 15 seconds. Then, stir in the food coloring, followed by the rice cereal. Stir until well-blended.

• Using your hands, press the yellow layer around the edges of the pan to make a ring. See photo for reference.

You may butter your hands to make it easier. Try to pack it firmly against the edges of the pan.

• Using the same bowl, repeat the process for the orange layer.

• Using a clean bowl, make the white layer in the microwave, pressing it into the center of the pan.

• Allow everything to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing into triangles.

Spiders

T

here seems to be two basic reactions with people when it comes to spiders- “Cool, check out this spider!!!” or “Gross! A spider, kill it!!!” You may not be a fan of spiders but maybe you can appreciate what they do for us, and how they do it.

Spiders are arachnids, they all have: • • • • •

eight legs two main body parts; the abdomen and the cephalothorax chelicerae (aka- mouthparts) multiple eyes- most have eight eyes, but some have six or four spinnerets for spinning silk

Spiders, for the most part, are insectivores. That means they eat insects. And that’s one of the reasons they are so beneficial to humans. Their untold consumption of insects helps out farmers crops and even your backyard garden. They also kill and eat disease-carrying insects like cockroaches, flies, and mosquitos. And spiders, in turn are food for many other animals including birds. Spider silk and venom is being studied by scientists as well.

Nature &

The natural world holds many secrets. Part of the fun of a nature hike is the promise of uncovering something that is new to you. Whether it’s a new bird, a new plant, or an unfamiliar animal track, there is always something unique to discover.

As long as people have been encountering wildlife, they have been making up stories about what they see! Some animals get all the “good vibes” stories without trying. Owls, cardinals, butterflies and other “mysterious” animals are seen by people as messengers, or as wise beings.

They can also be seen as omens of good fortune.

Common types of

spiders found locally

Experiments are being done to make a synthetic silk that could be made into parachutes, netting, even bullet proof vests. There are also tests being done to make a pain-killer with spider venom to replace the use of opiates.

Spiders are everywhere. There is a saying that “you are always within six feet of a spider”. In some areas like a meadow or forest that may be true. But in your house, probably not (but maybe!).

When you take a closer look at what they do for us, possibly some of that fear turns to respect. And next time instead of squishing the spider, gently put it back outside to do its job.

While we can’t say for certain, the one great thing that seeing these animals up close is that you had a cool wildlife encounter on your trip to the forest.

Other animals aren’t so lucky in their reputations. Ever hear that picking up a toad could give you warts?

Or that picking up a baby bird will cause it to smell like humans and the mother will reject the foreign smell? Have you ever heard that vultures or ravens are harbingers of death and destruction? While the stories themselves aren’t true, the intent for most myths is to foster respect for our fellow creatures and to leave them undisturbed in their natural habitat.

Sometimes, we catch a glimpse of things that are more mysterious than normal. As humans need to have an explanation for things, we often will make up stories and legends to explain what we’re seeing.

The allure to find the truth is so strong that some people dedicate their whole life to cryptozoology.

Cryptozoology is the study of and search for legendary animals in order to evaluate the possibility

Wolf Spider - Large, brown and hairy these spiders run down their insect prey. The females are good mothers, carrying their babies on their backs.

Crab Spider - ambush hunters, they hide in plain sight and wait their meal to come to them. Some like the Red-banded Crab Spider can change colors to match the flower they are sitting in.

Fishing Spider - our largest spiders with a leg span of up to 4 inches. They eat aquatic insects as well as small fish and tadpoles Jumping Spider - curious, colorful and acrobatic are words that describe these diminutive spiders. The Bold Jumper can often be found indoors on sunny windowsills. They will turn to face any movement.

As an Ohio summer fades into autumn, the days get colder & shorter, and pumpkin spice seems to be everywhere and on everything, our state’s deciduous trees begin preparation for the coming winter months and their season/stage of “dormancy,” a period of inactivity and rest.

Because a green plant’s food-making ability and processes (photosynthesis) depends on sunlight & moisture -both of which are in short supply in winter- woody plants like trees & shrubs maintain minimum cell activity during winter by using the food energy already stored in its tissues. Therefore, as deciduous trees near the end of their food-making period each autumn, the amount of the pigment chlorophyll in their leaves (needed for photosynthesis) begins to decrease, which in turn causes them to lose their green color. It is when chlorophyll begins to break down and disappear that, depending on the tree species, the yellow, gold, or orange pigments (xanthophylls and carotenoids), also present in the leaves, are then revealed and are responsible for these particular colors which are hidden by the chlorophyll during spring

and summer. When it comes to the particular pigment that paints leaves, such as maple and sumac, pretty shades of red and purple, it’s the anthocyanins that are behind these popular-forphotographs colors. Plus, you’ll create a nocturnal craft and view the night sky using telescopes with Black River Astronomical Society members. Discover hands-on activities to help you learn more about our native nocturnal animals like owls, bats, and coyotes. Fall Hay Wagon Rides

Are you interested in a tram tour of Cascade Park and the West Falls? This tram ride does not require preregistration; it is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be a clipboard for riders to sign up. The tram can accommodate 6-7 adults and will run every 30 minutes.

Bring the family out for fall fun at the Wellington Reservation. This year we will have fall wagon rides and fun games that the kids are sure to enjoy. Each wagon ride will last about 30 minutes and allow visitors to experience the beauty that Wellington Reservation offers in autumn. Information on Apple and Pumpkin harvesting and general garden care

Pumpkins are a member of the squash family. Squash can be divided into two groups: summer squash with thinner skins and softer flesh (zucchini, crookneck, and pattypan, for instance) and winter squash with thicker skins and firm flesh that can be stored into the winter months (pumpkins, butternut, and acorn).

Orange squash (like pumpkins and butternut) are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, fiber, and a host of other nutrients. Winter squash seeds can be toasted and eaten as a high-fiber snack that contains lots of Vitamin E. Winter squash has long been a part of our fall décor with gourds and jacko’-lanterns, but we are becoming more familiar with a broader range of pumpkin colors from white to blue to striped and skins that are bumpy or deeply grooved or have unique

shapes. All are edible and

bring something different to

the table.

Apples

Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?

Quercetin is a plant pigment (flavonoid) found in many fruits and vegetables, including apples. Quercetin is used to treat heart and blood vessel conditions, arthritis, bladder infections, diabetes, and other ailments. Ask your doctor before taking any medicine or supplements.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Recipe • 1½ cup cleaned pumpkin seeds • 2 tsp. melted butter or oil • Pinch of salt

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees 2. Toss seeds in a bowl with butter/oil and salt.

3. Spread on a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes, occasionally stirring seeds.

Butternut Squash Soup Recipe • 6 cups (about 2 large squash) seeded 2-inch wide chunks butternut squash • Melted butter for brushing • kosher salt

• freshly ground white pepper • 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock • 4 Tbsp. honey • 1 tsp. minced ginger • 4 oz. heavy cream • ¼ tsp nutmeg

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Brush the flesh of the squash with a bit of butter and season with salt and freshly ground white pepper. On a sheet pan lay the squash flesh side up. Roast for about 30 to 35 minutes or until the flesh is nice and soft.

3. Scoop the flesh from the skin into a pot and add the stock, honey, and ginger.

4. Bring to a simmer. Take off heat and puree using a stick blender.

5. Stir in the heavy cream and return to a low simmer— season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Putting your

Garden to bed for winter

All spring and summer, people have spent time in the garden watching plants grow and enjoying the veggies and flowers that result. Now that fall and colder weather are within sight, what is to be done? Now is not the time to ignore the garden.

Things that are done in the garden now will make things easier in the spring.

After the growing season is the time to lift plants like dahlias or cannas, take off the extra dirt, but do not wash them with water, leading to rot. Store in a paper bag in a basement or garage. Fall is the time to plant spring bulbs like crocus, tulip, daffodil, and hyacinth. Fall is also an excellent time to plant shrubs.

Be sure to clean up any debris in the garden, including annual plants, trimming back perennials, and raking leaves and veggies that have dropped off vines. When pruning (especially hydrangeas and roses), verify the plant the species as some should be pruned in the fall and some in the spring.

Fall is also a good time to turn over the soil and add compost. This step will loosen the soil and expose any insects that have burrowed underground.

Lastly, protect fragile plants with a layer of mulch or leaves to help insulate against the cold.
