Willy Wonka

Ushering in a new era of modern theatre, Thornton Wilder wrote of a people frozen in the earliest years of the 20th century. Decades later audiences continue to be moved by their simple yet universal struggles, dreams, loves and triumphs.

The world’s most famous chocolatier reemerges after years in hiding, and five lucky children win a once-in-alifetime trip through his factory.

Welcome to French Creek Theatre Welcome! Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on the “coat of many colors” story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. This was the first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly. Joseph was first presented as a 15-minute pop cantata at Colet Court School in London in 1968 and was recorded as a concept album in 1969. After the success of the next Lloyd Webber and Rice piece, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph Rick Fortney Artistic Director, received stage productions beginning in 1970 Lorain County Metro Parks and expanded recordings in 1971 and 1972. While still undergoing various transformations and expansions, the musical was produced in the West End in 1973, and in its full format was recorded in 1974 and opened on Broadway in 1982. I am so excited to have Joseph performing on the French Creek Stage. My thanks to Brittni Shambaugh Addison who is serving as our director. Brittni is new to French Creek but will be returning shortly as she is also directing Willy Wonka this summer! Brittni is joined by our staff, production team, crew and cast. My thanks to each of you for your dedication in bringing Joseph to the French Creek Stage. Our season continues with two more productions before our summer season. Following a violent incident at school, a 15-year-old boy is assigned to work with his social worker’s father, an urban gardener coping with the loss of his wife. Over the course of one summer, a budding friendship empowers them to grow beyond their troubled pasts. Andrew Morton’s Bloom opens on French Creek’s Pijor Stage March 31 - April 9. Jason Robert Brown’s Parade opens in Ewing Theatre May 5th and continues through the 21st. Grief, ambition and tragedy come together for a beautiful and stirring musical that challenges our own prejudices. Due to content this

A Note from the director When I was seven years old I acted in my first “professional” production. I was in the kid’s chorus of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at a theatre in Wilmington, North Carolina. I was the youngest in the cast, and I’m fairly certain that I was only cast because my older sister had the voice of an angel, and the director would have felt bad casting her and not me. Nonetheless, it was a profound experience. I got to spend my time with people who were passionate about the art they were making, who felt called to make it, and who were using that art to tell the story of a man living up to his destiny. Years later, I am still inspired by this story. What strikes me now, in a way that I couldn’t quite grasp as a child, is what a universal story it is. A story about never giving up. A story about doing the right thing and pressing forward even when things seem impossible. A story about becoming the people we were born to be. No matter your gender, race, age, or ability, you have the opportunity to do amazing, world-changing things. This is what Joseph taught me at seven years old, and this is what I hope you will all experience today when you see the show. I also hope that you will have a heck of a good time! Now, may I return to the beginning? Enjoy the show, Dreamers!

Brittni Shambaugh Addison Director/Co-Choreographer
