Building a More Sustainable Metro Parks
Dear Residents,
Protecting the natural world has always been at the heart of our mission. In recent years, Lorain County Metro Parks has taken meaningful steps to ensure our daily operations reflect that commitment. Sustainability is not a single action, but a series of thoughtful choices, and I am proud to share how we are reducing waste and caring for our environment.
At Miller Nature Preserve, the Orchid Café has become a leader in our composting efforts. Food scraps are composted, and the cafe has transitioned to compostable utensils, packaging, and paper products. Plastic bottles are no longer sold at concession stands, cafés, or at Kopf Family Golf Course at Cherry Ridge. Instead, visitors will find boxed water and Gatorade in recyclable cans.
Composting initiatives are expanding across the park district where staff breakrooms now feature compost bins for lunch scraps and coffee grounds. At Carlisle Raptor Center, even the remains from raptor meals, including mice and other animal parts, are composted, ensuring organic materials are returned to the soil. These efforts are strengthened through our partnership with Rust Belt Riders, which allows locally produced composted soil to be returned to our parks and used in flower beds and gardens at Miller Nature Preserve and other locations.
We invite the community to take part by joining us this spring for Earth Day programs, litter clean-up hikes, paddling programs, and other sustainability-focused events. On April 25 at Lakeview Park, attend a documentary screening of Ripples of Plastic, followed by a panel discussion. On May 17, the Spring Green Market returns to Miller Nature Preserve with eco-conscious vendors and a native plant sale. For more details on these programs, see pages 19 and 20.
Each of these actions reflects our ongoing responsibility to protect the land, water, and wildlife entrusted to our care. Thank you for supporting Lorain County Metro Parks as we continue to grow greener, together.
Sincerely,
James E. Ziemnik Director/Secretary

FIELDS AND FORESTS
AnAdditiontoSandyRidgeReservation
Article by Josh Michalski, Park Manager & Nora Gallagher, Natural Resource Land Steward
Lorain County Metro Parks continues to grow with the addition of 207 acres to the Sandy Ridge Reservation in North Ridgeville, formally named "Sandy Ridge West." The property, located on the west side of Case Road, south of Otten Road, was acquired in 2018 from Lorain County Community College with funding assistance from the Clean Ohio Grant Program from the Ohio Public Works Commission. Trail construction began in the summer of 2025. The current trail consists of a 1.8mile loop starting at the parking lot at 7020 Case Rd., North Ridgeville.
Habitat Diversity
Sandy Ridge West is comprised of two different habitat types. First, a forest featuring towering pin oak, swamp white oak, silver maple, and shagbark hickory. While the majority of the trees are younger, around 75 years old, intermixed are much older oaks, nearing 150 years old and possibly older. Wet meadows make up another large portion of this property, which emerged from abandoned agricultural fields. Some of the main plant species in these areas include wool grass, soft rush, sensitive fern, vervain, swamp milkweed, and foxglove beardtongue.
Natural History of Sandy Ridge West
North Ridgeville, like most communities in northern Lorain County, is located in the lake plain. This lake plain was formed by a series of proglacial lakes that existed from 25,000 to 117,700 years ago, which preceded Lake Erie. The sediment laid down by these ancient lakes created the
soils we have today. These lake plain soils are characterized by high clay content and poor drainage. This high-content clay soil inhibits water penetration into the local groundwater, trapping it near the surface. Most of this region, prior to European settlement, would have consisted of large wetland forests and occasional openings with low-growing wetland vegetation.
Just south of Sandy Ridge West lies another remnant of Northern Ohio’s glacial past. This ancient remnant is a beach ridge deposited by proglacial lakes. These sandy beach ridges and the highcontent clay soils made northern Lorain County an area where wetlands were once more common. These ancient beach ridges still exist today under many of our major east-west roads. The beach ridge south of Sandy Ridge West is now Center Ridge Road. Sandy Ridge West lies in the Black River Watershed. Portions of the eastern property line run along Chapel Creek. Much of this creek, south of Sandy Ridge West, has been altered and straightened. The section that runs through Sandy Ridge West and continues northeast through the property is still in its natural state. This creek provides year-round running water and plenty of riffle and pool habitat for a wide array of aquatic life.

Wildlife Viewing
Sandy Ridge West provides plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing. The forested habitat with its oaks and hickories provides a good food source for deer (pictured) and turkey. The forest overstory provides important habitat for songbirds and raptors. Many of the larger, older oaks provide important nesting, roosting, and hibernation habitat. Bats, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, and owls all benefit from large mature trees with cavities. Other animals you might notice include foxes, coyotes, minks, and a whole host of pollinators in the wet meadow areas.
Land Stewardship
Sandy Ridge Reservation is a healthy, thriving habitat thanks to Mother Nature and the hard work of park field staff, and that same effort is now underway at Sandy Ridge West. Staff have been planning and building vernal pools throughout the new property to support amphibian breeding. All four pools are located along the trails, making them easy to spot as you explore. These pools currently contain large amounts of glossy buckthorn, an invasive plant that displaces native vegetation. This spring, park staff will begin removing the invasive understory to help the vernal pools develop into healthy, functioning habitats. As you visit Sandy Ridge West this spring, watch for amphibians crossing the trails as they move toward their new breeding pools.

As winter makes way for the oncoming season, the number of spring signs becomes more apparent to those exploring nature - around the neighborhood or within nearby metro parks! By using your senses, detection of spring-associated sounds, sights, and smells is possible - no tools required (although binoculars, field guides, and quiet companions can help)!

BLUEBELL TREK HIKES
Sat., Apr. 18 | 10:00 am

In wild areas throughout Ohio, the earliest bloomers have already emerged by the time March arrives. Skunk cabbage is among the first, having the innate ability to create their own heat to melt the surrounding ice and snow. Their camouflaged flower may not attract as much visible attention as their brightly colored leaves to come later, the stink produced by the spathe and spadix attracts carrion-feeding insects and increases as the plant matures. Not far behind are the ephemeral harbinger of spring and spring beauty, native wildflowers named aptly for being among the first flowers, take advantage of increased daylight and warming temperatures. Both are important early nectar sources for native bees and flies. Soon to join and add color to the array are bloodroot, Virginia bluebells, and trout lily, among many others - their aim to attract attention from the increasing number of pollinators who help facilitate seed production and the furred and feathered foragers who might aid in the spreading of those seeds.

Spurred on by the same factors encouraging wildflower blooms, animal species of all kinds (including human) seem to be more active within wild and residential areas alike. As winter wanes, access increases, thanks to Earth’s position relative to the Sun. The
melting of snow and ice creates puddles and vernal pools that by default, allow animals more access to water for drinking, bathing, and breeding. Amphibians finally freed from their nearly-frozen state can now spring into action, some vocalizing to attract mates or defend territories, others trekking from one pond to another when conditions are just right (which is often at night). Other ectotherms (colloquially referred to as “cold-blooded”) of the reptilian kind - like snakes, turtles, and lizards - make use of the sun to provide heat needed for increased movement and proper digestion, now that feeding has resumed.
As natural food resources become more available, so do opportunities to watch (from a safe distance so as not to disturb them) as they forage and feed. Behavior in winter resident birds and mammals shifts focus from survival to reproduction. As spring arrives, so do migrants returning to establish nesting or breeding territories. A reinvigorated effort to compete for resources results in the fittest surviving. The young who succeed are cared for by wild parents who, by instinct and design, provide the best nutrition and security in

the early stages of life. (Note - Intentionally avoiding direct interactions with uninjured wildlife and observing from afar is the best encouragement we as humans can offer for the survival of our wildlife neighbors.)
Now is the time to seek out the many signs of spring! Seasonal changes observed in spring can come and go in short sequence; the succession of spring to summer will happen quickly as time Marches (and Aprils and Mays) on.
Tips for Careful and Considerate Nature Connections
Make an effort to immerse yourself in nature, following these tips:
1. Plan Ahead: To make the most of your outing, prepare in advance. Join a scheduled group nature activity (i.e., wildflower hikes, bird-watching sessions, and paddling trips). If going out on your own, map your route and be sure to inform a friend or family member on the details of your trip, noting the time of your intended return.
2. 'Leave No Trace': Use ‘Leave No Trace’ practices when visiting natural areas. Make no marks on wild areas by using only designated paths, and take any trash with you for proper disposal in a provided trash container or at home.
3. Follow the Rules: Know and actively comply with the rules and regulations protecting the area you’re visiting (LCMP restrictions are posted online, in print, and on signs at many park areas). Your consideration of the habitats you explore helps to protect the wildlife and resources available to them.
4. Keep Your Distance: Maintain a safe distance from any wild animals encountered during your visit. Even well-intentioned human-wildlife interactions can harm individuals and populations within a habitat. Direct contact with wildlife babies can cause irreparable injury even in the short term. Alternatively, wildlife actively defending young or territories can also inflict injury on humans simply as a means to survive.
5. Control Your Pets: Follow regulations pertaining to leash length and stay on designated trails. Collect all pet waste and dispose of tied bags properly in the provided trash containers.
6. 'Habitat Your Home': Consider options for naturalizing your yard. Adopt as many sustainable practices as you can to minimize your ecological impact (use battery-powered equipment in lieu of gas, reduce mowing frequency/limit mowing season, select organic fertilizers, incorporate native plants).
Check out an extensive list of scheduled hikes, activities, and other nature explorations offered throughout LCMP beginning on page 16. Register online or by calling (440)458-5121. Native Plants are available for purchase as part of the Spring Green Market (info listed on opposite page). For all pollinator-lovers - Miller Nature Preserve's Butterfly House opens on Father’s Day (June 21, 2026)! Engage with live butterflies through the end of August. Details to come!
