Homeschool Programs KIDS IN MOTION Every Wednesday | 12:45–1:45 pm Splash Zone, Oberlin Attention Homeschoolers—join the Splash Zone team for physical education and fitness fun! Each Wednesday from 12:45– 1:45 p.m., homeschool students can attend a 1-hour fitness session. Sessions will alternate weekly between fitness classes led by a certified instructor and open gym time for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. This is a drop-off program available to students 6-12 years old. Each session costs $3 per student. Pre-registration is required and opens on Friday the week prior.
OPEN SWIMMING Every Tuesday & Thursday (Through May 31) | 1:30–3 pm Splash Zone, Oberlin Homeschool Open-Swim—Splash Zone will be offering an open swim session each Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30–3 p.m. (through May 31). The main indoor pool, splash pad, and frog pool will be available for homeschool students and families. Daily facility admission of $8 per person is required. Pre-registration is not required. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
HOMESCHOOL EXPLORERS: WILDFLOWERS Wed., May 4 | 10–11:30 am Indian Hollow Reservation, Royal Oaks Bring your homeschool student to enjoy a hike and learn about Ohio’s wildflowers at Indian Hollow Royal Oaks Park! This drop-off program is for homeschool students in grades 1-6. Pre-registration begins April 3 and closes May 3. The cost is just $3 per student. Students can be dropped off at the main parking lot, located at 1057 Parsons Rd., Grafton.

Join us for a free tram ride to tour the parks! The tram rides below are first-come, first-served with limited seating and availability. Tram rides take approximately 15-30 minutes. REEL HAPPY FATHER’S DAY FISHING DERBY June 19 (weather dependent) | Noon-4 pm Vermilion River Reservation Enjoy a Father’s Day fishing derby with your own little guppies. This program is a catch and release event intended for children 4-15. All kids must be accompanied by an adult. Bait will be provided but participants should bring a fishing pole and tackle. A limited number of poles will be available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis. Take part in fly tying lessons, learn about Ohio and its rivers, enjoy a fun craft, and compete for prizes! $5 per child (adult chaperones are free). Must pre-register by 6/18.

National Pollinator Week CELEBRATE NATIONAL POLLINATOR WEEK (BEGINNING JUNE 20) WITH THE LORAIN COUNTY METRO PARKS
Pollinator Power
Many of us celebrate spring by getting our hands dirty and planting food and decorative gardens. While we plant gardens for our enjoyment, remember to also plant for the pollinators. A pollinator is anything that helps move pollen around to fertilize a plant. Pollen movement must occur for a plant to produce fruits, vegetables, seeds, and new plants. Two-thirds of the entire world’s plant species depend upon animal pollination. This means one out of every three bites of food you eat exists because of the efforts of pollinators. The pollinator powerhouses are insects and other animals such as bees, wasps, moths, butterflies, birds, flies, and small mammals, including bats. Some pollinators, such as bees, intentionally collect pollen, while others move pollen accidentally. Pollen sticks on the bodies of butterflies, birds, and bats when they feed on flower nectar. So, what can you do to help? Planting a garden can provide crucial food sources for pollinators. Each pollinator has unique techniques for sourcing nectar and pollen, so flowers should be as varied as the pollinators who visit them. Selecting native flowers and plants local to our area will provide the best food source for our local pollinators. Many common non-native varieties may have big, showy flowers but very little nectar. It’s best to keep the non-natives to a minimum and focus on a mix of native species. Many resources can help guide your planting, including our upcoming free public program, “What’s in the Wildlife Garden?” A naturalist will be on hand to share what’s happening in our native plant garden and share pollinator gardening tips and tricks. Remember, when getting your hands dirty this spring, be sure to plant for the pollinators.
Butterfly House at Miller Nature Preserve
Open Daily 11 am-3:30 pm | Father’s Day through Labor Day FREE admission More than 12,500 visitors stop by the Butterfly House at Miller Nature Preserve each year. This free attraction has allowed guests to get close to these spectacular pollinators for 11 years. After its 2021 renovation, we invite you to come see these temporary residents flitting around, sunning themselves, feeding on a flower, or chasing another around playfully. Visitors can see butterfly species from within the United States including: buckeye, cabbage white, monarch, painted lady, red admiral, swallowtails (pipevine, queen, spicebush, tiger), and viceroy. However, some tropical species can also be found including: great southern white, julia, queen, white peacock, and zebra longwing. In recent years the house has also seen unique residents like the malachite butterfly, a light pastel green species, and the atala, a hairstreak butterfly in bright red and iridescent blue.

Show your support, donate to the Butterfly House, and become a Butterfly Buddy! For just $10, you can purchase a Butterfly Buddy kit with educational information and fun activities. In the kit, you’ll receive a Butterfly Buddy button, a wooden butterfly keepsake ornament to decorate and hang in the Butterfly House, a butterfly feeding ticket (good for the 2022 season), and more! Proceeds from this kit are used to purchase butterfly chrysalids. An adult butterfly’s life span is about 2-4 weeks, so chrysalis deliveries are received every week throughout the season.

Opens May 26, Thurs-Mon (Closed Tue & Wed) 10-11 am, 11:30 am-12:30 pm, & 1-2 pm Wellington Reservation The Wellington Reservation Boat Livery opens Thursday, May 26, for paddleboat and kayak rentals! Enjoy the park’s 21-acre reservoir from a 4-person paddleboat for just $5 per boat per hour. Kayaks are also available for one-hour rentals for $15 for single and $25 for tandem kayaks. The livery will close on September 5 (Labor Day). Additional time slots may be rented for more time on the water. We provide all necessary safety equipment, including life jackets. Pre-registration is strongly recommended.
SUMMER GUIDED PADDLING TRIPS
Join us every Wednesday, June-September, on our weekly kayak trips! These are guided paddling trips with all equipment provided, including life-jacket, paddle, and boat. No prerequisites are required. However, we do suggest previous paddling experience. The program is open to ages 18 and up (16-17 with a participating adult). A brief skills refresher will be provided before each trip. June guided paddling trips will open for registration on April 15, July and August trips will open on June 17, and September trips will open on August 19. Early summer is an excellent time to go fishing, and many ponds throughout the park district are stocked with panfish and bass. Plus, several of our parks have access to rivers, teeming with bass and channel catfish. For new and experienced anglers, there are a number of opportunities to “wet a line,” whether casting lures or fishing with a bobber and worm. Not all ponds and waterways permit fishing, and many only allow catch and release. Check for posted regulations. Typically, anglers 16 and older must hold a valid Ohio fishing license to fish. However, the Ohio Division of Wildlife offers free fishing days each year. This year, on June 18 and 19, Ohio residents are invited to experience public fishing opportunities without a license—all size and bag limits still apply. Visit ohiodnr.gov for more details and a list of Ohio fishing regulations.

Lakeview Park Rose Garden CELEBRATE NATIONAL ROSE MONTH AT LAKEVIEW PARK'S HISTORIC ROSE GARDEN
Celebrate the Roses
June is National Rose Month, an ideal time to celebrate the world’s most popular and beloved flower. Roses throughout time have been used to symbolize love, beauty, war, and a multitude of emotions and expressions. According to fossil evidence, the rose could be up to 35 million years old! Today, there are more than 150 species and over 30,000 varieties of roses. Stop by the historic Rose Garden at Lakeview Park (pictured right) to celebrate the roses! The Lakeview Rose Garden is the largest and most visited within the parks. It was originally dedicated on May 30, 1932 to honor those lost during a devastating tornado in 1924. The creation of this garden was sponsored by a number of community members and families as well as 17 organizations, including the Lorain Rotary Club. The garden’s design pays homage to the Rotary Club with its 48 plant beds laid out within an eight spoke wagon wheel, the emblem of the club.

Support the Rose Garden with your donation! A donation of $100 or more entitles a donor/ honoree to be listed on a plaque on the garden’s east side. Donations go towards the continual maintenance and upkeep of this breathtaking garden. A new donor sign is added periodically—with the latest being installed this spring for donations made from 2018-2021. Donations can be made via check made out to Lorain County Metro Parks and mailed to Lorain County Metro Parks, c/o Public Information Officer, 12882 Diagonal Road, LaGrange, OH 44050.
