Natiori mourns loss of children in Oklahoma City bombing by ChristinaFeehan news editor
Each day, the covers ofwellknown newspapers all around the world showcase the latest developments of one of the most tragic bombings in the United States. News But this time, Analysis the bombing was different. The bombers were American citizens. This time, the nation could not blame people from another country for this massacre. Instead, we had to look to our own American neighbors. Only a few minutes after 9 a.m. on April 19, when employees were punching in for work at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal
Building in Oklahoma City, a car bomb exploded at curb side with the force of battleship guns, according to The New York Times. On April 20, 21 people were reported dead, 17 of which were children. This has been called the worst act of terrorism in the nation's history, and it was the work of American hands. The Alfred P. Murrah building housed offices for the Department of Defense, Housing and Urban Development, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and a day-care where employees brought their children while they were working. According to U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, this crime was to be considered a capital
one and the government would seek the death penalty for those responsible. The explosion, according to the New York Times, also killed and maimed people who were on the street, overturned and ignited cars, damaged six nearby buildings and blew out windows for blocks, setting scores of fires over the city of 440,000 in west-central Oklahoma. According to the April 21 issue of The New York Times, two "white male" suspects have been identified by the FBI as the death toll rose to 53. These suspects were only identified as John Doe at this time. Over the weekend, as rescue workers found more bodies of children and adults, the death
toll rose to 92. On Wednesday, April 26, one week after the blast, President Clinton requested a moment of silence throughout the nation at 9:02 a.m., CDT (10:02 a.m EST). At this time, only Timothy J. Mcveigh has been charged with planting the Oklahoma City bomb. Two other men, James D. Nichols and Terry Nichols, have been held as material witnesses. It has become public knowledge that these brothers built "bottle bombs" and experimented with other explosives in 1992 and 1994 with McVeigh, according to The New York Times. He also wrote that he is getting tired of making bombs. "It's no fun having to spend all your eve-
nings and weekends preparing dangerous mixtures, filing trigger mechanism out of scraps of metal or searching the Sierras for a place isolated enough to test a bomb ... " One may wonder why there was a bomb planted in Oklahoma City, a place some people may think is only for growing crops. According to The New York Times, the bomb was probably planted in the Alfred P. Murrah building because its layout insured that a bomb could be placed so close to children, in the America's Kids day-care center on the second floor. Federal buildings in other major cities either do not have day-care c.enters or place them in areas less accessible to a bomb.
