Drug incidentexposesproblem by Caroline Croley assistant news editor

As we enter the middle of the '90s, drugs are making their way back into the lives of today's youth. Recently, campus security said it uncovered three drug-related incidents on Cabrini's campus in Xavier Hall. Cathy Caulfield, director ofresident life, said, "Even though I cannot speak about the specifics of the incidents, I can say that we are seeing an increase of drug abuse among youths in our schools." She added, "In the past, I think, we seemed to hear that drug incidents were being reported in certain areas of college campuses. Now, it seems like incidents are being found across campuses." In most cases, the police would have been called in. Because of the small amount of illegal substance found, however, security and resident life decided to handle the situation internally. The incidents were reported by concerned .students, who went to Rich KraJle, director of security, and Caulfield, before the investi-

and kept in total confidence, Kralle said. After receiving this information, Caulfield felt a room search for aJI three rooms was necessary. The student handbook clearly states

Rape policy examined by Kelly McDonald co-news editor

Rape is not something uncommon on college campuses. Reported and unreported, acquaintance and stranger, rape has occurred on Cabrini's campus. In Pennsylvania, if a person engages in non-consensual sexual intercourse due to physical force, coercion or threat, actual or implied, the act is considered rape. Alcohol or unconsciousness does not serve as a justification for urJconsented sexual intercourse. If sexual intercourse takes place in any context without consent, it is rape. According to an article in Public Health Reports, MarchApril 1992, of the rapes that occur on college campuses, 84 percent are committed by someone with whom the victim is acquainted, and approximately half are committed on dates. Researchers have suggested

that alcohol use may be a significant factor in rape cases. Three out of five women and two-thirds of men report being involved with an incident of coercive sexual behavior in which alcohol was a contributing factor. When rape is reported on campus, many staff members and facilities are available, to assist the victim in overcoming the trauma incurred.

that, in the case of an emergency, a room search can be warranted. Caulfield said searches are not done on a whim. The school does respect a person's right to privacy.

The students whose rooms were searched strongly felr a room search was unfair and that at least one person should be in the room at the time of the search. Joseph Mumm, a first-year student whose room was searched, said he was not involved. At the time of this search, Mumm said he was upstairs in another room. When he came back, he was told to stay in the room. No one, under any circumstances, was permitted to leave the room until the search had been completed. The search took about 35 minutes, a body search was carried out, and Mumm said his room was thoroughly examined. The security report said a halffull bottle of marijuana_ seeds was found, along with pipe screens, two packs of rolling papers, 30 cans of beer, a 12inch curved knife with cas·e and
