Nikki L. Shuler, senior, said that she felt Ferraro showed her strength in the debate against Vice-president George Bush. Shuler said, "Ferraro didn't get emotional when Bush jumped all over her. This is the fourth in a five-part series examining different aspects of the 1984 Presidential Campaign.
The problem that most women in polftics face, is the need for the precise combination of assertive politicking since double standards can make them appear to be either too pushy or pushovers.
by Barbara A. Mongelli Campaign '84 will, if nothing else, go down in history as the year of the first woman vice-presidential nominee. The choice of Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, made by Walter Mondale, Democratic nominee for the presidency, was both praised and criticized. Was it a step ahead for women across the country or just a ploy by Mondale to boost his sagging campaign, to bring in more of the female vote? Politics has always been an area dominated by men. Even with the advances that women have made to achieve their present level of equality, only five percent of the more than 50 percent female population in the United States hold elected positions in
'Poweris a tough issue for women. Takingpower is not 'nice." -Ethel Klein, author of the Gender Politics "Power is a tough issue for women," said Columbia Associate Professor Ethel Klein, author of"Gender Politics," in the July 23 issue of Time magazine. ''Taking power is agressive. It's not 'nice."' Political onlookers seem to agree that Ferraro has generally achieved this medium and thus, overcome the stereotype
Whether or not this historic choice means that the role of women in politics will change, remains to be seen. James Hedtke, professor of political science, said that he does not see the overall role being changed, but does see Ferraro as a barrier breaker. Just as Sandra Day O'Connor became the first female Supreme Court justice and
Frances Perkins the first woman to be appointed to a Presidential Cabinet (Rooselvelt's), Ferraro took that first step, often the crucial one in climbing others. The implications can surpass present day sentiment, also. The continued appointments of various women in political positions can change the ruJes. According to Dr. Carol Nadelson, president of the American Psychiatric Association, in the Time magazine article (July '84), "A fifthgrade boy also has a view of a woman as being in a kind of role. This clfange expands his view of women." To the optimistic equal rights advocate, improvements have been made in political equality, with others certain to come. Shuler feels that a female president is "inevitable." As the Gallup poll oflast year indicated, 80 percent of the population said that they would consider voting for a women president, an increase of approximately 30 percent in a little over ten years.
Ferrarotook that first step, often the crucial one in climbing others.
