The Life of Royal Canadian Navy Veteran

Ed Vishek Archana Cini Lookout Newspaper Ed Vishek was a young boy watching the Avro CF-105 Arrow streak overhead when he first decided he wanted to fly.

“It was probably the hottest plane in the world at the time,” Ed said. “I wanted to fly that Arrow.”

When the program was later cancelled by the Government of Canada, Ed settled on another hope for his adulthood.

“I couldn’t fly the Arrow anymore, so I decided on the next best thing — to fly for the navy.”

Ed Vishek was born in Sudbury, Ont., where his father worked in the mines before the family later settled in St. Catharines, 13 miles from Niagara Falls. His father, a veteran himself, had first immigrated to Canada at 19 after leaving a small country later absorbed into Yugoslavia.

“The way my dad tells it, we got here, we were given a package of cigarettes, a package of tobacco, a package of papers, and then got told, ‘Go.’ That was it.”

What followed was a string of odd jobs across the country, cutting wood in Quebec, mining coal in Alberta, and working a fishing boat off the coast.

Ed was an active sea cadet through childhood. During this time, he remembers sailing aboard His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Haida, a Second World War destroyer, and being

shown the notches carved into the ship’s railing for each enemy ship it had sunk. Ed went on to graduate from the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Wings Course in 1962, moving onto flying the Grumman S-2 Tracker (CS2F Tracker) out of Shearwater, NS. For the next ten years, he served aboard Americ an ai rcraf t c a rriers including the Essex, the Wasp, and the Intrepid.

On a break between postings, Ed met his wife after turning down a shipmate’s earlier offer to set him up. Their first outing was to Butchart Gardens, a place she had never seen in spite of being born and brought up on Vancouver Island. On his next visit to see her for Christmas, the car he was riding in flipped on an icy road in Washington State.

“I remember waking up on my head with rocks hitting me in the face,” said Ed. He came away with a broken collarbone, among other, more minor injuries. Within a year, Ed was flying again.

The Visheks had two children.

Their daughter, Shannon, born in 1963, is now the mother of four sons. Their son, born in 1965 while Vishek was at sea near Puerto Rico, was born with severe asthma.

“Every time the fog rolled in, we’d rush him to the hospital,” said Ed. “It was painful to watch as a father.”

Told to get his son out of the

maritime region, Ed requested a posting to Edmonton, even after being warned it would cost him a promotion.

“I said, fine,” Ed remembered.

Upon their arrival, Ed’s son was placed in specialized care, where he later passed away. “A loss,” Ed said, “that a parent should never, ever go through.”

It was from Shearwater that Vishek found himself part of one of the most dramatic searchand-rescue missions of his career. “I got called in at two in the morning,” said Ed. “I went to the rescue coordination centre, and was briefed.”

In the summer of 1981, he then flew a CC-130 Hercules (an aircraft often used for search-andrescue missions), callsign Rescue 315, to Lynn Lake, Manitoba, picked up 11 local volunteer spotters, and began combing a search area approximately 400 miles north of the community for a missing aircraft. “We picked up our first search line, and were on it for around four minutes when an emergency locator beacon came on,” said Ed. “I saw a downed BrittenNorman Trislander, and I knew.

I remember using the intercom and saying ‘This is Rescue 315.

We have found the airplane — it’s crashed, and three people are injured. I repeat, we have found the airplane.’”

The rescue that followed was its own ordeal. A 400-pound survival bundle was parachuted

toward the wreck, but strong winds caused it to fly past the airplane, slide across a frozen lake, and eventually sink approximately 11 miles from the crash site. Two members of the crew descended from the Hercules to the crash site, above which Vishek circled for the rest of the day awaiting helicopter evacuation for the injured, which came more than 10 hours later.

One of the three survivors, the aircraft’s co-pilot, Dale McCurdy, later wrote of the crash and the sound of Ed’s approaching Hercules, which felt like an answered prayer to him. The rescue made national news.

Vishek retired in 1992, after 33 years of service. Asked what makes a good pilot, he didn’t hesitate.

“Get rid of your ego,” said Ed. “People get killed because of that ego.”

Fifth Annual Commodore’s Cup Returns to Colville Field Archana Cini Lookout Newspaper On Sept 16, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) will face off at Colville Field for the fifth annual Commodore’s Cup. The Cup was first introduced in 2022 to build camaraderie and esprit de corps between Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) and the RCAF’s 19 Wing Comox. Since that first flag football game, a narrow 20-18 RCAF win in front of more than 200 spectators, the Air Force has held onto the cup every single year.

This year, the RCN is hoping to turn the tide.

“We’re finally gonna win this thing,” said Lieutenant(N) (Lt(N)) Zachary Champion on the Navy’s roster.

Team dynamics and strategy have also shifted heading into this year’s matchup, with several new faces stepping into significant roles.

“Some guys playing for the first time are in pretty key positions that I think will bring another element to the team,” said Sabastian Robinson, Personnel Support Programs (PSP) Sports Coordinator.

To make the game as accessible as possible for spectators across the base, a complimentary shuttle service will run from Work Point to Dockyard, Naden, and finally Colville Field on

game day. Beyond the game itself, the Commodore’s Cup has become a fixture on the base’s sporting calendar, drawing large crowds for the past four years.

Whatever happens this year, the rivalry of the Commodore’s Cup has already accomplished what it set out to do: giving RCN and RCAF members and their communities across Vancouver Island a reason to cheer, show up for each other, and enjoy flag football.

What a Polar Bear Teaches Us About Resilience September Padre Alistair Turkington Welcome to the September installment of From the Chaplain’s Desk, a series that showcases reflections from chaplains serving at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt.

Each piece offers personal perspectives from those who work closely with members of the Defence Team in times of challenge, transition, and everyday life.

If you’ve ever seen a polar bear in a documentary or a photograph, it’s easy to be impressed. It has long been on my bucket list to see one of these majestic animals in the wild. During my deployment in the Arctic aboard His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Max Bernays, this wish came true.

My first impression was of its sheer size. Standing tall against a backdrop of snow and ice, the polar bear is perfectly at home in one of the most isolated and unforgiving environments on Earth. But beyond its strength and size,

the polar bear offered an important lesson that applies to all of us, every day: resiliency.

Built for survival, it uses every tool at its disposal, from

Life in the Arctic is anything but easy. Temperatures plunge well below freezing; fierce storms can appear without warning; food is difficult to find. Despite this, polar bears continue to survive and thrive. They travel incredible distances across sea ice in search of seals, sometimes waiting patiently for hours, or even days, for an opportunity to hunt. Though success is never guaranteed, the polar bear always continues to move forward.

When conditions change, the bear always adjusts. It does

There is something deeply relatable about the persistence of a polar bear. We all face moments when life doesn’t go according to plan, whether it is the loss of a job, a family challenge, health concerns, the daily pressures of life, or something else entirely. Like the polar bear, we often find ourselves navigating uncertain terrain, maybe on our own.

What makes the polar bear remarkable is not that it attempts to avoid hardship, but that it adapts to it.

That lesson may be more relevant today than ever.

Communities across Canada are facing economic uncertainty, rising costs, rapid political uncertainty and social change. While these challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, resiliency is an incredible human strength.

Like the polar bear, we do not know what lies beyond the next stretch of ice, but we take the next step, trusting our abilities, and moving forward despite uncertainty. In a world that often feels unpredictable, this may be the most important lesson of all.

Indigenous Drum-Making Workshop Unites CFB Esquimalt Community

Archana Cini Lookout Newspaper On Aug 13, the Wardoom Lower Lounge filled with the gentle sound of stories being exchanged and sinew being threaded and pulled tight. The morning represented the first of three Indigenous drum-making workshops this summer hosted by the Defence Indigenous Advisory Group (DIAG) and facilitated by the Aunty Collective, an Indigenous women-led cultural practice hub.

This first session was designed as a family workshop, inviting civilian and uniformed Defence Team members to attend with a child, parent, sibling, partner, or another person they consider family. Through the course of the morning, each pair built a traditional hand drum together.

“What you’re actually doing is bringing a drum to life,” said Rhudey, crediting an Indigenous Elder for this perspective, one who first taught her how to make drums. Participants were also told of a teaching carried across many Indigenous nations, that the first drum a person makes is usually meant to be given away.

“You’re told to put all of your good feelings and energy into it for the person who will use it,” said Rhudey, describing the process as unhurried, but not without its moments of frustration. “Everyone will finish,” she reassured the group. “We’ll come over, and help each other.”

Facilitated by Sarah Rhude, known as Rhudey, artist and co-founder of the Aunty Collective, the workshop opened the way Indigenous gatherings often begin: in a circle, with no head or foot, where all are equal. Participants passed an eagle feather around, through each other’s hands, introducing themselves and where they or their ancestors are from. Aunty Collective facilitators then sang the “Strong Women Song” together.

“We sing this song to each other. It is so that we keep each other strong,” said Rhudey. Participants were invited to hold someone in mind through the singing, whether a family member, stranger, or simply themselves.

The group then moved into the drum making, learning to stretch damp elk hide over a hollow, round wood base. A long strip of sinew was then used to weave the hide tightly into place in a repeating, patient motion that also attached a pine drum handle to the instrument.

Among those attending the workshop was Captain(N) (Capt(N)) Douglas Layton, Base Commander of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt and DIAG Champion.

Capt(N) Layton noted that workshops like this one give Defence Team members the chance to learn directly from Indigenous knowledge holders and community members, rather than through policy alone.

“Over time, the hope is that events like this will foster a culture of curiosity, respect and understanding, so that it becomes part of our everyday interactions at CFB Esquimalt,” he said.

“Success is not measured solely by attendance at events, but by the cumulative impact of people seeking opportunities to learn from one another, engage meaningfully, and build lasting relationships.”

By the end of the morning, workshop participants reflected on not only the completed drums in front of them, but also the valuable conversations and knowledge-sharing that had shaped their making.
