North Sheffield man jailed for historic abuse of young boy A NORTH Sheffield man who subjected a teenager to years of sexual abuse is now behind bars for his heinous crimes. Sixty four year old Stephen Martin, of Holgate Avenue, Parson Cross, Sheffield, was jailed for seven years at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday August 3, after being found guilty following a four day trial last month. Martin was jailed for four counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, after a jury found him guilty of abusing a young boy who he befriended, as Detective Constable Lee Atkins explains.
“Martin systematically groomed this teenage boy, who he befriended, bribing him with sweets and presents before going on to sexually abuse him. “The abuse during his formative school years has had a huge impact on the rest of his life and I cannot praise him enough for coming forward. “The victim, who was just 14 at the time the abuse began, was forced to recount his horrendous ordeal after Martin pleaded notguilty to the offences. The courage this takes is truly admirable and I’m pleased that the victim was able to see Martin jailed for his despicable crimes.
“I also hope that this demonstrates to anyone who may have been a victim of sexual abuse that it’s never too late to come forward. This man is now an adult and I’m thankful that he made the brave move of coming forward to us to tell us what happened so that we could see this vile individual put behind bars.” Martin has also been subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Neighbours complain after take away planning is passed A NEW takeaway could open in Deepcar despite concerns from neighbours. The unit was formerly Hair Crew hairdressers but Sheffield City Council have granted permission to change the use of the premises. Nasir Khan was this week granted permission to change the use and wants to open a hot food takeaway, serving food between
5pm and 10.30pm from Sunday to Friday, and from 5pm to 11pm on Saturdays. Stocksbridge Town Council opposed the proposal and 52 letters of objection were received. Despite this, Sheffield City Council approved the application. Andrew Tingle lives next door to the shop and on Tuesday he
voiced his concerns at the Council meeting, citing concerns about his children’s safety. He went on to say that he would hold the council responsible for any harm that came to his family as a result of the decision. Speaking after the meeting, he told Look Local: “I’ve been to the Sheffield City Council meeting today about a takeaway opening up
next door to my family house in a residential area. “Sheffield Council showed no concern to mine and over 50 people’s opposition to it, including Stocksbridge Town Council and the Environmental Protection services. “It’s on a dangerous stretch of road where accidents occur often.”

The opportunity allowed Declan to gain skills and techniques he can apply to his course at college and future employment and gave him an insight into living alone in London. Thanks to the Barnsley College Enterprise department, Declan received funding to pay for all of his travel, accommodation and living expenses during his placement period. The college’s Enterprise de-
partment supports students and staff, as well as individuals across the borough, to act on business ideas or enterprising activities. Catering and Hospitality Course Leader, Martyn Hollingsworth, said: “Declan has done both the college and the Catering department proud in achieving this amazing opportunity and gaining experience in one of the country’s top hotels. He was successful in gaining the work placement after cooking for the BFFF judges at the college in April. The Chef Mar-
shal at the Hilton added his congratulations to the college for turning out such dedicated and methodical chefs which we are extremely honoured to hear. “Thanks to Declan’s outstanding attitude towards his career goals in the industry, he has paved the way for strong working links and future placement opportunities with the Hilton Park Lane and the BFFF.” Declan added: “I had the most amazing time working as part of the team at the Hilton. It was a fantastic opportu-

Suspected arson in Thorpe Hesley POLICE are investigating after a car was reportedly set alight in Thorpe Hesley. At around 12.30am on Saturday July 22, emergency services were called to Sough Hall Road, where it was reported that a red

Just been reading your article regarding traffic outside the above school. What a pity the article doesn't mention the thoughtless drivers who park outside residents houses each day. Our homes are just an overflow car park for staff and visitors to Windmill Hill. It is disgraceful. The parents themselves park anywhere they like. Even leaving a baby in the car one morning with the engine running while they race across the road to drop off their other children. Living across the road from this school is a nightmare and their parent population must take 100% responsibility for the danger your article addresses. My own son has been forced into bushes while their 4 x 4s bump up on the payment in a morning and when I've complained have received a torrent of expletives. Their casual disregard for residents is legendary.

Impending 57 bus service cuts So the bus service is set to get worse – the 57 to run just hourly. Not enough demand, Stagecoach says. Of course there is low demand from Stocksbridge/ Deepcar bus users to go to Worrall (the 57 route) or Middlewood (the SL1/SL1a).

Their selfish parents are ruining our environment and causing a danger to everyone of us who live here. We've had enough. Dare I leave my name? Not sure as the parents who ruin our neighbourhood are full of expletives and threats whenever we have asked them to park safely in the past. Peak time bus problems
Thanks for publishing my letter this week concerning proposed bus changes. I believe the biggest single issue is that there will be no 57 setting off from Smithy Moor between 7:52 and 08:57, well over an hour at peak commuter time in the morning. As well as the fantastic buzz that the Tour de Yorkshire created, Fox Valley has now been open for over a year and the uncertainty of the steelworks future seems to have been secured with the arrival of Liberty after their takeover from Tata.
We have amateur dramatics, dance groups, choirs and bands and the churches of the area work together as Churches Together. Here in our latest Stocksbridge feature, we bring you updates on what’s happening in the community and also share some of the businesses that call Stocksbridge home. Examples of this are all around us - whether it’s the incredible fight for the leisure centre, the many groups that meet in the library, the clubbing together of local people to revitalise the Friendship pub or Stocks-

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

STEELS manager Chris Hilton has spoken of his delight after signing former Rotherham United player Alex Wiles from National League North team Gainsborough Trinity. The midfielder started over 20 league games for Gainsborough last season. The highly rated Wiles started his career with Rotherham United before moving to Evo-Stik Premier League side Buxton but has decided to join Stocksbridge although there was plenty of interest from higher league teams. Chris Hilton was obviously delighted to get the player, saying: “Alex is a player we have been watching for a while and will be an excellent signing for the Steels.”
Heggie takes on 12-hour ride LAST Sunday Birdwell Wheeler Paul Heggie rode his first ever 12 –hour time trial, the Team Swift event at Melbourne, East Riding. He covered a distance of just over 220 miles in the 12 hours. In the sixth of the club’s 10 mile time trial series on Tuesday, Dan Taylor was fastest with 21.20 whilst Trevor Mayne was fastest on handicap.
With one event of the evening series left, Taylor and Mayne share the lead with Phil Adams in third. Sunday’s club run saw Austin Watson, Tony Lodge, Philip Adams, Dave Scargill, Joe Woodhouse, Roger Bacon, Rodger Holmes and Dave Hudson head to Bubwith via Snaith. Weather can’t stop week of action at Stocksbridge Golf Club THE weekend starting Saturday July 29 saw Stocksbridge Golf Club take part in a twoday men’s competition for the Wilson Cup. A great turnout of 76 players started Saturday morning with fine weather but a fairly stiff breeze. This usually means higher scoring but round one saw some great scores. Gary Finney had a fine two under par for fifth place, three players had great three under par rounds with Alf Pearson in fourth, Tim Jones in third and David Buxton in second. First place in round one went to newcomer James Bell with a terrific six under par off 11 handicap.
Round two saw a much smaller field. James Walton was fifth with net 64 and lowest Gross score. David Buxton had a nett 64 to add to his 63 from Saturday. Steve Horsfield came third and Ash Howe second also with 64 but the winner with a nett 63 was Mick Tingle. The scores over two days are added together to establish the winner of the trophy. James Bell came overall third, second was James Walton with two fine rounds, both two under par. The trophy went to David Buxton with rounds of 63 and 64. The ladies competed for the Strathdene Trophy. A small field braved a blustery afternoon with Helen Moffett winning with a nett 68 (one under par). Hilja
O’Sullivan came second with a nett 72 and lowest gross score. The dragons competed on Wednesday for the Founders Trophy. A combination of poor weather and several members attending a funeral meant only 15 players turned out. Charlie Dale won Division Two with a nett 64 Tony Peers came second after a fairly long lay off. Division One was won by Dragons captain Les Wright also with a nett 64 and second was Pete Dickinson. The mid week medal again had a small field due to poor weather. Phil Neal came second with a nett score of 71. Winner was Carl Medley with a nett 68.

League action for Footpath Runners SIXTEEN runners and two officials represented Penistone at the final meeting of the Northern Track and Field League at Thornes Park, Wakefield at the weekend.
There was a stronger showing from the team across most disciplines, with Gareth Cooke scoring the first win in any event for the club with 16:46 in the 5000m. In the first season in this discipline 26 athletes and two officials turned out for the club, with six people attending all four fixtures. The club hopes to build from this base to progress the team in coming years. At the Salt Cellar fell race near Ladybower over 6.8 miles and 1,594 ft of climbs. Daniel Hague was 26th in 62:47, Paul Fryers 95th in 79:09 and Bryan Hague 136th in 85:42. In the Round Hill fell race near Otley 8.8 miles Ian Charlesworth was 36th in 71;44, finishing first V50.

At the York 10k road race. Gareth Cooke was 15th 34:53. A patched-up Damien Briscoe ran a good personal best of 38:44 and Jude Matthews 49:32. In the Eshton Moor fell race at Gargrave over 5.2 miles and 564 feet of climbing Jon Waller finished 11th 37:30.

Memorial match helps Macmillan Oughtibridge WM 2 Worsborough Bridge 1 THE Pete Appleyard Memorial Match took place in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support last Tuesday evening. Pete was a well known figure in the Oughtibridge community and passed away in May of last year. It was decided that the War Memorial sports club would host a charity football match in his memory, to be played between Oughtibridge War Memorial and Worsborough Bridge. The game ended in a 2-1 win for War Memorial with Tunnard and Harrison scoring the goals. Pete’s son, Joe Appleyard, said: “Thank you to everyone who came to watch our game in aid of Macmillan and in memory of my old man! Thank you to Joshua Wright and Worsborough Bridge - all the best for the coming season! “Importantly we managed to raise a massive £1,001.51 for Macmillan which is absolutely brilliant! A tremendous amount in memory of a tremendous man.”
