GRANTS OF UP TO £10000 FOR TALENTED YOUNG PEOPLE Talented young people across South Yorkshire could receive grants of up to £10,000 through a new fund aimed at helping them fulfil their potential. The South Yorkshire Mayor’s Youth Impact Fund will support 11 to 19-year-olds who show exceptional talent and promise in fields including sport, music, the arts, science and technology.
The fund has received an initial £25,000 donation from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, with further contributions expected from businesses, organisations and individuals.
It is being delivered in partnership with The King’s Trust and South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, which will administer the grants.
Launched by regional mayor Oliver Coppard, the fund aims to remove financial barriers that can prevent young people from accessing training and opportunities.
Mayor Coppard said: “We should never accept that a young person’s future can be decided by what they can afford rather than what they’re capable of.
Grants of between £2,000 and £10,000 will help pay for specialist coaching, equipment, course fees and travel.
“That’s why I’m launching my Mayor’s Youth Impact Fund, helping talented young people from South Yorkshire access the opportunities, training and support they need to take their next step.”
Teachers and community leaders can nominate young people based on their talent, ambition and personal circumstances. Applications and nominations are open until December.
He said he had met many remarkable young people whose abilities were not matched by the support available to them locally.

Martin Singer, chief executive of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, said early investment could have a lasting impact. He said: “Whether in music, maths, sport or science, early investment in young people can have a lasting impact, equipping them with vital skills and a strong foundation to help shape an inclusive and thriving South Yorkshire region.” Clare Higgins, head of delivery for Yorkshire at The King’s Trust, said the fund could open doors, build confidence and create life-changing opportunities for young people. Businesses and individuals are also being encouraged to contribute to help more young people benefit. Eligibility and application details are available on South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation’s website under the Youth Impact Fund section.

Diesel hits a record high Call 0114 283 1100
www.looklocal.org.uk
Drivers hunt for cheaper fuel Drivers around North Sheffield could save several pounds on a tank of diesel by comparing local forecourts, as the UK’s weekly average price reaches a record high. Government figures for the week beginning 5 October put diesel at 199.52p a litre, surpassing the previous record of 199.22p set in July 2022. At that price, filling a 55-litre tank costs £109.74 — around £31.55 more than at the beginning of March. A Look Local comparison checked on 13 October found advertised diesel prices ranging from 195.9p to 201.9p at eight verified stations within a fivemile radius of Stocksbridge postcode S36 2DU (Look Local’s ‘base’). The 6p difference amounts to a saving of £3.30 on a 55-litre fill, before taking account of any extra travel. Cecil Penney on Sheffield Road in Penistone offered the cheapest diesel among the stations checked, at 195.9p a litre. It also had the lowest standard unleaded petrol price, at 170.9p. Asda Silkstone Express was next for diesel at 197.9p, followed by Jet MFG
0114 245 4404 ericstead.co.uk
Morestyle on Burncross Road at 198.9p. Closer to Stocksbridge, Jet Ascona Deepcar advertised diesel at 199.7p, while Jet Intake 11 on Manchester Road charged 199.9p. The rising cost of filling up has coincided with a sharp increase in searches for cheaper fuel. According to analysis supplied by British Fuel Prices, Google keyword figures show UK searches for “petrol prices near me” reached 110,000 in August, compared with 27,100 in August 2025. Searches for “cheap diesel near me” rose from 8,100 to 33,100, while “cheapest petrol near me” increased from 27,100 to 74,000. Sam Allcock, editor of British Fuel Prices, said diesel prices were prompting drivers to hunt for the cheapest pump. He said differences of several pence a litre between forecourts meant checking prices before filling up could pay off. Petrol’s national weekly average stood at 174.88p a litre, still 16.67p below its July 2022 record.

Unique Cathedral Community to Work in Deprived Areas Sheffield Cathedral is launching a Christian mission community to support churches and residents in some of the city’s most economically deprived areas. The Community of St Paulinus is described as the first of its kind in a Church of England cathedral. It aims to renew parish churches and develop Christian communities shaped by the neighbourhoods they serve. Its launch was scheduled for Sunday 11 October, followed by Evensong on Tuesday 13 October highlighting music mission with schools and children. Listening to residents, building on neighbourhood strengths and creating opportunities for connection will be central to its work. Inspired by St Paulinus, the first Bishop of York, and the rhythms of monastic life, members will combine prayer, reflection, learning and service with parish partnerships and community organising.
Cathedral and Abbess of the community, said: “It’s a joy to see the Community of St Paulinus begin its life at Sheffield Cathedral.” Dr Justin Dodd, Canon Missioner and Prior, said the community would work beyond the cathedral to support congregations across the diocese. He said: “We aim to be a gift and genuine partner for parishes in economically deprived places, sharing resource and vision for the Kingdom of God.” A partnership with Penistone and Thurlstone Team Ministry has already helped resource a Choir Church in a local Church of England primary school. The community is also working with Citizens UK as Sheffield Citizens develops, supporting local people, faith groups and schools to pursue lasting neighbourhood change.

Passengers are being urged to plan ahead as track replacement works bring changes to Supertram services around Hillsborough during October half-term. Work near Hillsborough Interchange and Shalesmoor tram stop will take place from Saturday 24 to Saturday 31 October, with replacement buses serving affected sections of the Blue and Yellow routes. Worn rails, switches and crossings will be replaced as part of a £110 million programme to improve the network. These are the final planned track renewal works of 2026, following the replacement of more than 2.6km of track this year. Preparatory work will take place overnight on Friday 23 October without affecting tram services. The half-term restrictions are expected to be lifted from the start of service on Sunday 1 November. Melanie Corcoran, executive director of transport at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, said £36 million had been invested in seven areas of track renewal this year, including the city centre’s Delta junction, which was completed ahead of schedule. She said: “The latest works are the last rail replacement project of 2026 and by scheduling the works over the school holiday, when the tram network is quieter, we aim to keep disruption to passengers and road users to a minimum.” Further improvements planned for 2027 include refurbished trams and better passenger information. During the works, Blue route trams will run between Shalesmoor and Herdings Park, while Yellow route services will operate be-
tween Cathedral and Meadowhall Interchange. Both will run at their usual frequency of up to every 12 minutes. The Blue route will replace Purple route services between Cathedral and Herdings Park. Tram Train services will run as normal. Two replacement bus services will operate throughout the works. The BL2 will link Malin Bridge and Shalesmoor, stopping near affected tram stops, while the YE1 will run between Middlewood and Cathedral. Passengers can connect with trams at Shalesmoor and Cathedral respectively.

Road closures near Hillsborough Interchange and Shalesmoor will also affect traffic and local buses, with signed diversions in place. Buses will continue to serve Hillsborough Interchange where possible, although some services may use different stands or nearby stops.

Valid tram and multi-modal tickets will be accepted on both replacement buses. Tickets can be bought through the TSY Mobile app, from tram conductors or from replacement bus drivers using cash or contactless payment.
Separately, Blue route services remain suspended between Gleadless Townend and Halfway following the discovery of a historic mine shaft beneath the tram line near Birley Lane. Trams are being diverted to Herdings Park, with the BL1 replacement bus running between Halfway and Gleadless Townend while investigations and repairs take place.

Folk is back at The Venue Call 0114 283 1100
www.looklocal.org.uk
Folk music has come home to Stocksbridge. A revived folk club is now running once a month at The Venue on Manchester Road, and the man behind it, Martin Coyne, wants people to know exactly what to expect. “It will be uplifting music,” he says. “Happy, restorative. That’s what we’re planning for the winter.” Martin knows the building well. He ran folk nights here years ago, when the club was given free use of a room, and he still talks warmly about the help it got back then. He even painted one of the corridors himself. Bringing folk back to The Venue is a fitting return. This time he has his sights on a wider audience. Folk has a reputation as music for an older crowd, and Martin is keen to change that. He’s booking acts such as Jaywalkers, an uplifting band he hopes will draw in younger listeners as well as long-standing fans. “Folk isn’t just for older people,” he says. “Talent appeals to whatever age group.” Martin is also honest about what keeps younger people away. He remembers a talented young singer telling him that most of her friends simply couldn’t have afforded a ticket. So, the club is doing something about it. Children come free with their parents, and students and under-18s can come in for a donation. The idea is simple: if you love music, money shouldn’t stop you walking through the door. The nights take place in the Underbank, The Venue’s largest room, and a recent Saturday morning poetry and song session there showed just how well the space works for live acoustic music.
For The Venue, the club is a welcome addition to a busy calendar. STEP, the local charity that runs it, has been at the heart of Stocksbridge life for nearly 30 years. Alongside weddings, parties, dance schools and community groups, a regular night of live, acoustic music is exactly the sort of thing a community venue should offer.
Folk at the Venue
‘The John Palmer Trio’
“We want The Venue to be a place where people come together and enjoy themselves,” says Sam Tarff, STEP’s Chief Executive. “Martin brings real passion and a great ear for talent, and we’re delighted to have the folk club back where it belongs.” The club runs monthly, with acts booked up to Christmas. The first night is Wednesday 21st October with The Jon Palmer Trio. Doors open 7pm, music from 7.15pm. Future dates: Wednesday 18th November 2026 Union Jill. Entry fee recommended donation (£10) on the door. Wednesday 16th December 2026 - Stanley Accrington. Entry fee recommended donation (£10) on the door. Wednesday 20th January 2027 - Chris McShane. Yorkshire officially declared in drought status Call 0114 283 1100
Yorkshire has officially entered drought status following a lack of rainfall during the spring and summer, with water levels in reservoirs and rivers remaining low despite recent rain.
www.looklocal.org.uk
She said: “Even if we receive a few weeks of rain, we cannot quickly reverse the effects of the lack of rainfall during a very dry spring and summer. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation and implement our Yorkshire Drought Plan.”
The Environment Agency announced the declaration on Friday, October 9, after the region was placed in prolonged dry weather status at the end of July.
The Environment Agency is urging people to be aware of the impact of drought and use a little less water to help supplies recover.
Yorkshire experienced its fifth-driest April to September period on record, with river flows and groundwater levels falling particularly low in some areas.
Water Minister Emma Hardy said recent rainfall had not been enough to replenish the water used during the spring and summer.
The region now joins central, southern and eastern England in drought status, while the North East and North West remain in prolonged dry weather.
She said the Government was monitoring water companies and expected them to follow their drought plans, repair leaks quickly and reduce demand.
Vicki Townend, the Environment Agency’s area environment manager for Yorkshire, said the lack of rainfall had reached the threshold for declaring a drought.
The National Drought Group, which includes the Government, Met Office, regulators, water companies, farmers and environmental organisations, is now meeting weekly
7
to monitor conditions and coordinate action. The Environment Agency is increasing monitoring and checks on water abstractors, while processing drought permit applications to allow water companies to reduce the amount of water they must release into local rivers. The measures are intended to help protect public water supplies while balancing the needs of the environment and wildlife. The latest declaration means Yorkshire has experienced three droughts in five years, following those in 2022 and 2025. The Environment Agency said climate change was increasing the likelihood of longer, hotter summers and more intense winter rainfall, raising the risk of both drought and flooding. It stressed that drought and flooding could occur at the same time, as prolonged dry conditions can be followed by intense rainfall.

Silent horror classic comes to Paramount The landmark 1922 film will be screened on Sunday 18 October at 2.30pm, accompanied by Donald MacKenzie, resident organist at London’s Odeon Cinema. MacKenzie will play the Paramount’s mighty Compton cinema organ, bringing the sights and sounds of traditional cinema to life. The Paramount is Yorkshire’s only cinema to house a traditional 1937 cinema pipe organ, making it a distinctive setting for an afternoon of film nostalgia. Film fans can experience the chilling atmosphere of silent horror classic Nosferatu with live cinema organ accompaniment at Penistone Paramount this month.
Advance tickets can be booked through the Paramount website, by calling 01226 767532 or in person at the box office. Tickets can also be purchased on the door.
MUSIC GROUP CONTINUES WINNING SEASON Following two highly successful presentations to launch its autumn season of music talks, the Barnsley Recorded Music Society continues with two appealing programmes for October and November. On Wednesday 21 October at 7.15pm Society veteran Ron Cooper will present a talk on the famed German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler. Furtwangler dominated European music during his lifetime, and he continues to exert a strong fascination after his death in 1954 through his numerous recordings. Two weeks later, on Wednesday 4 November at 2pm, in complete contrast Henry Rajch will present a programme devoted to the music of Scotland, often over-looked but in fact well worth exploring. The Society’s meetings take place at the Friends Meeting House, 2 Western Street, Barnsley S70 2BP. Visitors are warmly welcomed. Admission costs £3, including refreshments, or £2 without refreshments.
Young people offered funding for climate projects The Youth Climate Action Fund is offering grants of between £700 and £4,500 to people aged 15 to 24 who want to make a difference in their local communities. Projects could include improving a local green space, setting up a community environmental initiative, developing green skills or helping communities prepare for climate change. South Yorkshire is one of 300 cities and regions around the world taking part in the latest phase of the Youth Climate Action Fund, backed by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Applications must be made through, or alongside, a youth-led or youth-serving organisation such as a school, college, university, youth group or community organisation. However, projects must be designed and led by young people. Applications close on October 23, with successful projects expected to be announced in November.
Funding is available across three areas: • Nature and green spaces • Green skills and careers • Water and climate resilience
Projects must be completed by April 15, 2027. The scheme is being administered by the South Yorkshire Community Foundation. South Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor Chris Read said the fund would give young people the opportunity to turn their ideas into action while developing skills and experience.

Local Opinion UK readers raise £2m via charity book club
is that it demonstrates how literature can foster a sense of connection in an increasingly fractured world.
Dear Editor
As a ShelterBox team puts up tents in Nepal, Book Club members voted to read the Himalayan historical fiction ‘The Last of Earth’ by Deepa Anappara. ‘An Unnecessary Woman’ by Rabih Alameddine immersed readers in the city of Beirut as ShelterBox worked across Lebanon to support displaced families. And while ShelterBox’s partners supported families affected by earthquakes in Afghanistan, the club read the collective journal of a group of Afghan women writers, ‘My Dear Kabul’.
In an era when public debate can often feel increasingly divided, it is easy to underestimate the power of stories to bring people together. At ShelterBox, we’ve seen first-hand how books can build empathy, understanding and global awareness by turning complex international issues into real human stories. Through our Book Club, readers, who pay £10-£15 a month for their subscription, receive books in the post inspired by ShelterBox’s work across the world. They have travelled through the pages of novels, memoirs and short story collections that go beyond statistics and headlines. This month, our community of readers reached an extraordinary milestone, raising £2 million to support families who have lost their homes after disaster and conflict. More than 10,000 people have taken part over the past eight years, reading over 160,000 books from 67 countries. What makes this achievement particularly special

LOCAL HISTORY UNEARTHED Flexus Under the Paragon Umbrella
When readers engage with books like these, distant events become more relatable, and unfamiliar communities feel a little closer to home. At a time when many of us are searching for ways to bridge divides and better understand one another, that feels more important than ever.
Chief engineer: Joseph Hayward.
Find out more about joining or gifting a membership at shelterbox.org/book-club.
Inset: William Hoyland
Yours faithfully, Catherine Thornhill Head Bookworm (Book Club Manager), ShelterBox
by Steve Moxon A healthier tale of industrial friendly rivalry would be hard to find than that of Samuel Fox and his chief engineer, Joseph Hayward – pals since they were apprentices together at a wire mill in Hathersage – and his clerk turned company secretary, William Hoyland (a generation younger, aged 23 when Fox met him). Hayward had invented the u-shaped hollow section in place of solid wire for the ribs of umbrella frames, allowing them to be so much stronger for their weight, and the basis of his famous Paragon design. Fox, as the employer, held the patent, not Hayward. Several years later, Hayward came up with another innovation, the Flexus, that on his behalf Hoyland presented to Fox, who turned it down. With all of the spring stretchers of the frame in tension except when the frame was fully closed, it was unique in being self-closing. What concerned Fox was that it entailed reverting from u-shaped back to solid sections, undermining the whole concept of ‘strong but light’. It’s not clear but it’s said he offered to produce it as a secondary, cheap line – not in a way that could rival Paragon. To manufacture Flexus – and this time for Hayward himself to keep the patent -- Hoyland and Hayward left Fox’s to form a partnership. It surely was a huge blow to Fox to lose his two key men … or it would have been if they hadn’t only half left. They retained a close relationship with Fox, who, from June 1872, sublet to them his wire-drawing premises at Ecklands Bridge, Thurlstone. Furthermore, the first six months’ rent was waived, and then payable annually in arrears, not the usual quarterly in advance. Fox went well out of his way to help them get established. This agreement is mentioned in Fox’s Directors’ Minutes as conditional on all steel being bought from Fox’s, plus other conditions unspecified. It was to mutual benefit. Hoyland & Hayward were all but in-house chez Fox. The departure of Hoyland – the company secretary, remember -- alarmed the brand-new board of Fox’s directors: just months before, in November 1871, had been born Samuel Fox & Company Limited. A covenant was drawn up to indemnify the company against
any losses from Hoyland signing checks or other behaviour. It’s signed ‘VC’ (Vi Coactus) by Samuel, indicating it was under duress, giving legal defence should the agreement be invoked. Evidently the board was nervous that the bond between Fox and Hoyland might not always be in the company’s best interests. It would have taken the partnership a good while to tool and scale up – the new design required custom-built machinery – manufacture proper not starting until 1875, so there must have been real financial strain. Five years on, though, Hayward returned to Fox. Presumably, once he’d sorted everything for Flexus his work was mostly done, and maintenance was all that remained, whereas at Fox’s he had great scope to devise and develop machinery for a wide variety of product lines. The big job at Ecklands Bridge, of juggling the finances and making sales, was Hoyland’s province. Fox would have had a heck of a job trying to replace Hayward, and hardly would stop wanting him back. And Hayward did owe Fox: not least for Croft House, that Fox had built for him (that once stood on Hunshelf Road near Pea Royd Lane). Given Hayward was the only person to have seen through with Fox his entire journey, it might be expected they’d want to be in joint enterprise towards the end. Perhaps surprisingly, nothing ground-breaking came from Hayward after his return. Then again, his hands would have been pretty full re-tooling, dealing with all the changes and scaling-up as Fox’s grew and grew. Meanwhile, Hoyland stayed put. His name remained the company’s long after his death, and it never came back under the Fox umbrella, as it were; not our Fox, that is. Fox’s ceased production of the Paragon in 1970. There just weren’t enough orders. Then Hoylands acquired a company that in 1972 had changed its name from Empire Rib Company – Fox’s chief competitor – to Fox Umbrella Frames Ltd! Hence Hoyland Fox, that its parent, indeed umbrella company completely transferred to China. Anyway, posthumously, the two names were wedded at last. Note also Fox Umbrellas, founded in 1868 in London by Thomas Fox, that went on to use (into the 21st century) the later laminated steel ribs that … were developed and supplied by Fox’s.

The good news is that it can be taught. 1. Make coming back worth it. Your dog is choosing between you and the world. Use rewards your dog really loves, such as chicken or cheese, saved just for recall, plus plenty of fuss. 2. Don’t make it the end of the fun. If the only time you call your dog is to clip the lead

The volunteer-run library has launched a community survey to find out what people want from the service, including whether opening until 6pm would encourage more visitors. Trustees are keen to hear from everyone, particularly residents who do not currently use the library, as they review its services, activities and facilities.

Ecclesfield Library is asking residents to help shape its future, with later opening hours among the ideas being considered.
S O S
Any extension to opening hours would depend on local demand and recruiting enough volunteers to staff the library safely and reliably. No decision has yet been made. The consultation comes more than 12 years after Friends of Ecclesfield Library took over its management from Sheffield City Council on 29 September 2014, following changes to the city’s library services. It officially reopened on 9 October that year, exactly 30 years after first opening its doors in 1984. Today, the library is managed by Friends of Ecclesfield Library CIO, a registered charity overseen by volunteer trustees. Local volunteers keep its day-to-day services running, with continued support from Sheffield City Council. Vic Bowden, chair of trustees, said: “Ecclesfield is a village with a rich history and a strong sense of identity, and the library has an important place at its heart. “Situated right in the centre of the village, the library is part of what makes Ecclesfield special, and we want to ensure it continues to reflect and celebrate the character and heritage of our community.”
He added: “The library is much more than somewhere to borrow books. It’s a place where people can come together, share knowledge, explore our local history and feel connected to the village and to one another.” Alongside book lending, the library supports local history and family tree research, giving residents opportunities to explore Ecclesfield’s heritage and their own family stories. It has also partnered with Christians Against Poverty to offer free money coaching courses led by local coach Tim Walker. The sessions cover household budgeting, prioritising spending and finding ways to save, and are open to everyone, regardless of faith or background. Trustees hope to develop more activities, events and learning opportunities, while making better use of the building. They say residents’ views, alongside available volunteers and resources, will guide those plans. The charity is recruiting both library volunteers and additional trustees. Volunteers can help welcome visitors, support library services and assist with activities. No previous library experience is needed. Prospective trustees with an interest or experience in finance, fundraising, administration, IT, marketing, community engagement or charity governance are particularly welcome, although previous trustee experience is not essential. The community survey asks how residents use the library, what would encourage them to visit and which additional services or activities they would like to see. It also asks whether different opening hours, including opening until 6pm, would be useful. Anyone interested in volunteering or becoming a trustee can leave their contact details on the form.

XC SEASON CURTAIN RAISER
For further details, visit Strideout on Facebook or Instagram.
Further afield, family members joined in the action, with Amy Everett and her mum taking on the Leicester 10km, while Kirsty Surgey and her dad tackled the challenging, hilly trail half marathon along Hadrian’s Wall, rewarded with some spectacular views. As a women-only running club, Strideout aims to offer a range of inclusive runs and events to encourage female runners of all abilities to get involved.
RUNNERS DOMINATE HOME AND AWAY High Green’s own Valley Hill Runners (VHR) proved their mettle on a bumper Sunday of racing, fielding athletes across three distinct 10k events and a cross country fixture on Sunday—spanning from local woodland trails and parks, to the Yorkshire coast, and even the Mediterranean. Emotional Farewell at the Sheffield Ten10Ten The 15th and final edition of Sheffield’s iconic Ten10Ten saw a massive contingent of 16 VHR runners line up at Endcliffe Park. The challenging multi-terrain course tested the squad with its undulating trails, scenic woodland paths, and notorious punchy inclines. Leading the charge for VHR was club chairman Luke Evans, who crossed the line in a respectable 58:45. He was pushed all the way by teammate Dean Ellis, who finished just two seconds behind in 58:47. Reflecting on the emotional day, Evans said: “This was the first race I ever ran for VHR, and so to come here and lead the team for the final edition was a wonderful experience for me.” The “lumps and bumps” of the trail caught several runners out, with Alison Baker (1:09:30) , Johanne Palmer (1:10:35) and Samantha Walton (1:33:31) suffering falls on the tricky terrain. Showing classic VHR grit, all three women dusted themselves off to finish the race, with Baker and Palmer finishing fourth and fifth for the club respective. Meanwhile, Sarah Turton marked a triumphant return from injury to finish in 1:31:47, and club stalwart and frequent volunteer Bernie Harding completed her fourth appearance in five years with a time of 1:32:42. Lone Valley Hill Runner tackles Cross Country Over in Norfolk Park, club veteran Michael Savage represented VHR in the first fixture of the SYCCA League. While teammates lined up elsewhere, Savage took on the challenging 5800m course single-handedly, ensuring that VHR were represented across all local events. Personal Bests Tumbled at the Scarborough 10k Over on the coast, another VHR contingent tackled the Run For All Yorkshire Coast 10k
in Scarborough. The scenic route took runners from the Spa, past the bustling harbour, around the historic headland to the Open Air Theatre, before a fast return stretch along the seafront.
A very busy Sunday the 11th as local races saw almost a third of the club out en-masse for various races.
Elsewhere in Sheffield the 15th and final iteration of the Sheffield tententen took place across Endcliffe and Bingham Parks.
The South Yorkshire Cross Country season was kicked off for 2026 at Norfolk park, with the gents taking part in five laps and the ladies consigned to three.
Club representation was strong with a female-led team comprising Helen Kellar, Rachel Howard, Cathy Steel, Kate Fewkes and Jennifer Elsegood.
The course was (true to form) hilly and steep, but Stocksbridge athletes were well practiced following many Monday club runs up the likes of Nanny Hill and Pea Royd, and made light work of the ascents.
Kellar secured 1st place F50 with a trophy and trainer voucher as her prize.
The flatter profile played perfectly into VHR Adam Daktera, Steve May, Narni Fulford and hands, resulting in a flurry of lightning-fast Beth Clegg all enjoyed the first XC of the seatimes and personal milestones. Lewis Taylor son, with everything to play for. led the VHR pack home, smashing his previous record to secure a brilliant new Personal Best of 49:13. He was followed closely by Daniel Mosby, who narrowly missed the sub-50 mark with a great time of 50:01. First lady for VHR was Kimberley Drake, who clocked an incredible 51:30—marking a huge Personal Best and an astounding four-minute improvement on her time from the same race last year. Emma Raine also had a spectacular run, crossing the line in 52:08 to record her fastest 10k time since 2024. The strong club turnout was rounded out by fantastic performances from Alan Pickard (57:00), Phil Harris (58:11), and Shiela Duffy, who hit the mark perfectly at exactly 1:00:00.
Taking on the big bad marathon distance was club stalwart Amy Hutchinson, whose many months of dedicated training and hard work come to fruition as she clocked a personal best with 3:43:43 at the Chester Marathon.
Wheelers take on testing Peak District climbs
Smith Goes International in Cyprus Proving that holiday season doesn’t mean stopping the watch, VHR’s Jody Smith flew the club flag on the international stage at the Famagusta Run 10k, starting and finishing in Protaras, Cyprus. The multi-distance festival caters to all abilities from 1k to 30k, but Smith had an altogether different battle against the clock. Reflecting on his sun-soaked race before a dash to the terminal, Smith joked: “When you realise you’ve just about got time to squeeze in the 10k before heading to the airport for your flight home… well it would be rude not to, wouldn’t it? ‘ Whether dodging tree roots in Sheffield, conquering the headland in Scarborough, or racing down a Cypriot runway, it was a day that perfectly encapsulated the VHR spirit. From poignant local goodbyes to spectacular personal bests and global adventures, High Green’s finest continue to prove that no matter the terrain, the climate, or the continent, Valley Hill Runners always deliver.
Wheelers riders Gavin Phoenix and Trevor Mayne tackled one of the Peak District’s most iconic hill climbs last weekend, taking on the challenging ascent from Edale to Mam Tor. The 1.3-mile climb has an average gradient of 10%, with even steeper ramps along the route, making it a stern test for the riders. Phoenix completed the climb in 9 minutes 6.7 seconds to finish 40th, while Mayne narrowly
broke the 11-minute barrier, recording a time of 10 minutes 59.9 seconds. Phoenix continued his hill-climb season on Saturday with a ride at Jackson Bridge, where competitors faced another demanding ascent. The one-mile climb averages 11%, with ramps reaching 15%, providing another tough challenge. Phoenix clocked 6 minutes 24 seconds to finish 30th overall and an impressive fifth in the veteran category for riders aged over 40.

NEW COACHING STAFF ADD NEW PLAYERS AS STEELS SUFFER FIVE CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE DEFEATS
STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS 0 - 3 MATLOCK TOWN
Over the past week or so, Bracken Moor has seen the arrival of new coaching staff and a host of new players. The first new player through the door was 18-year-old midfielder Derren Boyle, who came through Guiseley’s academy and made six appearances in their first team last season under former Steels boss Ian Richards. Steels fans, that keep an eye on the FA Youth Cup, may remember Boyle scoring a hat-trick for Guiseley’s U18s at the start of last season in a 9-1 win at Bracken Moor. Boyle’s arrival was closely followed by Lloyd Allinson on loan from Cleethorpes Town. The experienced goalkeeper has played for FC United and Pontefract Colleries in the past. Then on Saturday, came the announcement of two young Owls. Sheffield Wednesday’s Louis Poland and Reuben Selby joined the club on loan. Left-back Poland came through at Everton before signing for the Owls over the summer, whilst Selby a young defender is in his second year of his scholarship with Wednesday. Another young signing came in the form of Elton Wamba Simo, 18. The young versatile player who can play in defence and midfield came through at Leeds United before being released in the summer. The most recently announced signing was Ryan Cook joining the Steels from Sheffield FC. The Australian forward played two sea-
sons with the Oldest club and has scored four goals this season. Despite, all this change, the result on Saturday remained the same. A fifth consecutive defeat for the Steels which leaves them second from bottom. It’s worth nothing that Steels fans have yet to see new manager Jason Blunt whose first match in attendance is against Bridlington Town on Wednesday night. Saturday showed Blunt has quite the job ahead of him. The 3-0 defeat against ‘The Gladiators’ Matlock Town left no-one of a Steels persuasion entertained. Outside of some link-up play between Josiah Dyer and new signing Ryan Cook which resulted in Dyer’s volley going wide of the post. The Steels failed to beat former Sheffield United goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst in the Matlock goal. SHEFFIELD have it all to do in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership Grand Final after losing their home leg against Belle Vue 47-43 on Monday. The Tigers raced into an early six point lead courtesy of three straight 4-2s but were pegged back level by the end of Heat Five.
“Ultimately Belle Vue showed why they’ve been top of the league for pretty much the entirety of the season and we’ve left ourselves with a task on our hands - but there’s still 15 heats to go. “We’ll go to Belle Vue on Friday and give it our best shot, that’s all we can do.
The Owlerton outfit then opened and maintained a two point advantage up until the end of Heat Nine before racing to two further 4-2s to re-establish the six point gap.
“I want to take the opportunity to thank all the fans who turned up in great numbers and supported us all the way - let’s just see what happens.”
But the visitors, who topped the regular standings, rounded off with three straight advantages, including two 5-1s from 2026 Grand Prix duo Brady Kurtz and Jason Doyle, with their Heat 15 maximum giving the Aces the edge going into Friday’s (October 16, 7.30pm) decider at the National Speedway Stadium.
ROWE MOTOR OIL GRAND FINAL, 1st Leg
Tigers team boss Simon Stead said: “We’re obviously all disappointed, it’s never nice to lose at home, never mind in a Grand Final.
