‘Glow for the Greenbelt’ rally planned for North Sheffield Campaigners fighting plans to build homes and businesses on greenbelt land in North Sheffield are continuing their campaign with a special evening rally in October.

Campaigners are encouraging people taking part to wear something green and bring a green glow stick as they aim to keep the greenbelt campaign in the public eye.

Save Our Greenbelt is organising a ‘Glow for the Greenbelt’ event on Saturday, October 3, with two walks setting off from Grenoside and Chapeltown before coming together in Ecclesfield.

The Save Our Greenbelt group has been campaigning against Sheffield City Council’s proposals to release areas of greenbelt land for potential housing and employment development.

Both walks will begin at 6pm.

The group says it wants to continue highlighting the importance of protecting the area's green spaces and opposing development on greenbelt land.

The Chapeltown group will set off from the Miners Arms on Warren Lane, while the Grenoside walk will start at the Community Centre on Main Street. The two groups will make their way to St Mary’s Church in Ecclesfield, where they will meet for a rally and a speech from campaigner Jo Tunstall.

The October event will provide another opportunity for local residents to show their support for the campaign. Two walks, one finish – Saturday, October 3, from 6pm.

High Green explosive substances investigation:

Two further arrests made Two more people have been arrested as police continue their investigation into suspected explosive substances at a house in High Green.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s were arrested under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act and on suspicion of drug offences. Both have been bailed pending further enquiries. The arrests are the latest development in an investigation which has seen a police presence at a property on Mapplebeck Road since Friday, September 11. At one stage, a 100-metre cordon was put in place around the house, resulting in nearby properties being evacuated and road closures on Mapplebeck Road, Griffiths Road, School Road, Worrall Road, Beech-

wood Road, Hawthorne Road, Entwhistle Road and Greenwood Road. The evacuation followed a discovery at the property during a careful forensic search being carried out by specialist officers. Residents advised to leave their homes were directed to a nearby rest centre, while other emergency services attended as a precaution.

No injuries were reported. The search of the property was led by the Army's Explosive Ordnance Team and concluded on Wednesday. Specialists recovered suspected chemicals, drugs and weapons. Police have since confirmed there is no longer a risk to nearby properties or people.

248 The Common, Ecclesfield, S35 9WN

A 36-year-old woman was previously charged with an offence under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883. She appeared at court on Monday and was remanded in custody. Detective Chief Inspector Aneela Khalil-Khan, who is leading the investigation, said enquiries were "very much ongoing".

She added that police were limited in what they could say because of active court proceedings and urged people not to speculate about the investigation on social media. She said: "Our priority throughout has been keeping the public safe." Police have not provided further details about the suspected substances or weapons recovered while the investigation continues.

Firefighter retires School praised for after 25 years maths approach

A Penistone firefighter has retired after 25 years of service to the local community. Firefighter Richard Simpson attended his final drill at Penistone Fire Station last week, marking the end of a career during which he responded to incidents across South Yorkshire. Colleagues described him as a “Penistone legend” and thanked him for the knowledge and experience he has passed on to newer recruits in recent years. Penistone firefighters paid tribute to his commitment, saying: “We can’t thank him enough for everything he has done for Penistone fire station.” They wished him well for retirement, adding: “We hope retirement treats you well. We wish you all the best as you crash through those doors into retirement!”

Royd Nursery Infant School has been recognised for the quality of its early years teaching after receiving a ‘Commitment to Quality’ schools award.

The school has also been asked to share its approach with other early years providers across Sheffield as an example of good practice.

The award, from Sheffield City Council’s Early Years Quality and Access team, recognises the school’s work using ‘Active Maths for Engagement and Inclusion’.

Miss Brook, Early Years Foundation Stage Lead, said schools had historically visited Royd to see its teaching methods and this would continue.

The approach uses practical maths activities both indoors and outdoors, tailored to children’s individual needs and stages of development.

Deputy Headteacher Mr Sly said the school was “delighted” to receive another award recognising the quality of education provided to its pupils.

The council team said Active Maths was a well-established part of teaching at Royd and praised its role in keeping children engaged while supporting their transition into Key Stage 1.

The latest recognition follows Royd’s most recent Ofsted inspection, which rated its Early Years provision ‘Outstanding’. The school said the award reflected the hard work of its Foundation Stage team and the high standards of early years education at Royd.

By Ben Bradley Earlier this year, wild Atlantic salmon were confirmed to have successfully bred in the River Don for the first time in more than 200 years. That is remarkable news for Sheffield, but national figures show how fragile this recovery remains. The Environment Agency reports that 95% of England’s principal salmon rivers are below the level needed to sustain

The design of the sculpture will be informed through a series of school’s workshops looking at local history, folk law and culture. All primary schools in the town are planning to take part in the workshops from September, and sessions will be hosted by Stocksbridge library for home schooled children and SEND groups. They will use drama and creativity to support literacy and the broader curriculum through creative learning. As part of the project, every child in year 4 in Stocksbridge will have the opportunity to complete their Arts Award Explore. The project will support them in the journey to achieve their award. The final sculpture, which will stand at approximately three meters at the entrance to the completed library, will be made by local artist Andrew Vickers, aka Stoneface. Hilary Osborn, Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board member overseeing the Public Arts Project, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people across Stocksbridge to help shape a permanent piece of public art that reflects the town’s unique history, culture and identity. “By involving every primary school, as well as home educated children and SEND groups, the project will not only create something lasting for the community, but also inspire creativity, learning and pride among the next generation.”

TWO SHEFFIELD INSTITUTIONS TEAM UP FOR PUB NIGHT

Two Sheffield institutions have teamed up to make a much-loved part of everyday social life more accessible. Abbeydale Brewery and Burton Street Foundation have joined forces to support The Burton Arms, a new pubthemed night designed specifically for Sheffield’s learning disability community. Burton Street Foundation supports children and adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health conditions and autism. The Burton Arms was set up to give people with learning disabilities the chance to enjoy a good old pub night in a safe, welcoming environment. Held at Burton Street Foundation’s heritage site in Hillsborough, the night features all the things that make a trip down the pub special – drinks, dancing, darts, pool, quizzes, table football and plenty of laughs. The event was packed, with Abbeydale Brewery providing prizes for the evening’s Bongo Bingo, including a selection of its popular beers and merchandise. Abbeydale, which is celebrating its 30th birthday this year, is the only employee-owned brewery in England through an Employee Ownership Trust. The partnership gives The Burton Arms a helping hand from one of Sheffield’s best-known independent brewer-

As part of the project, each of the two infant schools in Stocksbridge will receive four days of creative workshops, while each junior school will receive six days, providing extensive opportunities for pupils to contribute ideas and themes for the sculpture and wider public art programme. Each school will also be visited by a local illustrator who will eventually also work on the art installation. Alongside producing lasting public art, the programme is expected to deliver wider educational and social benefits. Andrew Vickers, sculptor and artist at Stoneface Creative, said: “I’m incredibly proud to be creating the artwork for the new Stocksbridge Library. “As a landmark building at the heart of the town, the library will play an important role in the community, and I am honoured to contribute a piece of public art that celebrates the area’s identity, reflects its people, and complements this exciting new development.” Lauren Ash, a local drama artist who will be running the school engagement programme, said: “This is a really exciting project to be involved with and I’m looking forward to working with local school children to bring their ideas to life through creativity. “Creating a sculpture inspired by the stories, ideas and voices of young people is a wonderful way to celebrate our shared heritage and create something lasting for the community.

ies, supporting Burton Street’s aim of making nights out more accessible for people with learning disabilities and autism. Justin Sheppy, Manager at Burton Street Foundation and creator of The Burton Arms, said: “Most of us love a good pub, but for many people it can also be an intimidating place. The Burton Arms gives people with learning disabilities the chance to enjoy a proper pub night in a safe, friendly and inclusive environment. “We’re really proud to have Abbeydale Brewery supporting the night. They’re a much-loved Sheffield business, so having them behind The Burton Arms is absolutely fantastic.” Laura Rangeley, Marketing Manager and co-owner of Abbeydale Brewery, said: “We’re really excited to support The Burton Arms. It’s a fantastic evening, and we’re proud to play a part in creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities to socialise, have fun and feel part of their local community.” With The Burton Arms already proving popular, Burton Street hopes it will continue to give people with learning disabilities the chance to enjoy a good night out and make new friends.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to The solution see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Local Opinion Steely Crimes Imagine a crime where the perpetrator was allowed to control the scene of the Crime and eradicate the evidence. Imagine that on a scale of tens of thousands of deaths in a killing process that was ethnically inspired. What if the killings were allowed to continue and included the deaths of tens of thousands of children? Unimaginable. Horrifically, we do not have to imagine this. It is happening. Steel produced in Stocksbridge contributed to weapons that are being used in this process; I know this because some time ago I Googled their customer list. I doubt you can do that anymore,

Simply Strings is led by Sheffield-based violinist Liz Stacey, who founded the ensemble more than 20 years ago. Liz has built Simply Strings into one of Yorkshire’s best-known professional string ensembles, performing at weddings, corporate occasions and major events across the region and beyond. She studied violin in Sheffield and has performed with a wide range of chamber groups and ensembles, as well as at prestigious events including performances for members of the Royal

SPRINGFIELD CARAVANS

Family. For Made in Sheffield, Simply Strings will turn their attention to the city’s rich musical legacy, demonstrating just how well songs created for guitars, synthesisers and rock stages can translate into the intimate sound of a string ensemble. Liz Stacey said: “Sheffield has produced such an incredible variety of music and artists, from huge rock bands to electronic music, indie and some of the country’s finest songwriters. Made in Sheffield is our opportunity to celebrate that heritage in a completely different way’. “Penistone Paramount is a wonderful place to perform, and hearing these familiar songs played by strings, surrounded by candlelight, should make for a really special evening” Simply Strings: Made in Sheffield takes place at Penistone Paramount, on Sunday 4th October 2026 at 7pm. COASTAL WINDY RUN

Tigers’ reserves Luke Killeen and Jye Etheridge responded immediately after the duo made a fast getaway in Heat Two before double drama in Heat Three. After initially losing an ‘elbows out’ battle into turn one with Edwards, Leon Flint then slid off at the end of lap two and a re-run was ordered by SCB trainee referee Joshua Marsh, under the guidance of Paul Carrington - much to the dismay of Northampton promoter Paul Hunsdon who raised his arms aloft in the air, convinced the race should’ve been awarded.

Saturday is parkrun day, and it was a celebration at Concord as High Green Harriers social running club member Christopher Grayson celebrated his 300th volunteer. If you are a parkrun fan, you will know that’s over 6 years of Saturday mornings volunteering so others can run.

But it worked out even better for the visitors in the re-staging when Chris Holder became the latest victim of mechanical gremlins after a close battle with Adam Ellis, gifting the Foxes a rare 5-0.

A big cheer from the runners rang out for Chris. Angela Mappin, run director, said we have a great team at Concord, and our runners appreciate us all; obviously chocolates and cakes were the reward at the end. After Concord, Chris, Jayne, Wendy and John headed over to Cleethorpes for the Sunday run. John and Wendy ran the 10k; Chris and Jayne ran the half marathon. The day was very warm, and a brutal headwind on the approach in was very challenging indeed. Wendy beat her husband John at just over 53 minutes; John was 55 on the 10k. Chris was beaten by his wife Jayne, who was on 1 hour 53; Chris was 1 hour 57. He was very pleased after an injury had stopped his running lately.

Four Stocksbridge Running Club athletes delivered strong performances across road and trail events this weekend. Cathy Steel braved windy conditions at the 10th APB Humber Coastal Half Marathon, finishing the 13.1-mile course in 2:12:26.

After a nightmare night, Chris Holder rounded off his outings by winning a shared Heat 12 before Pickering was beaten for the first time by Foxes’ captain Jaimon Lidsey in Heat 13. But the Tigers sealed their playoff place with a race to spare when Flint and Etheridge outgated their opponents in Heat 14 before a final 4-2 as guest Fricke completed his booking with a second win. Tigers’ team boss Simon Stead said: “I’m just pleased to get it over the line to be honest. “It was tighter than we would’ve liked but I’m hopeful that we got rid of all the bad luck that we could possibly have had; I’d rather get that out the way this week rather than next week. “We had a lot of engine related problems in the pits but the boys have the chance over the next few days to get those sorted because we can’t afford for any mechanical mishaps once the play-offs are here. “But tonight was all about getting the job done that we knew we had to do, we got it done in the end and that’s the most important thing.” For a second year in a row, Sheffield have now set up a semi-final with Leicester. The first leg will be held at Owlerton next Thursday (September 24, 7.30pm) with the decider at the Hydroscand Arena one week later (Thursday, October 1, 7.30pm). A TALE OF TWO HALVES CHURCH SECURE BEVERLEY TOWN 2-0 STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS

Stocksbridge Park Steels were left empty-handed at Beverley Town as a second-half salvo from the hosts secured all three points. The Steels had chances to take control of the contest before the break, with Josiah Dyer twice coming close to opening the scoring. Dyer’s first opportunity came from a dangerous corner, which found the forward in space inside the Beverley box. However, from close range, he could only turn his effort wide of the target. The Steels continued to look the more threatening side as the half progressed and Dyer went even closer just before the interval. Finding space to get a shot away, he forced a fine save from Beverley goalkeeper Leigh Overton, who did well to keep the scores level at half-time. Beverley emerged from the break with renewed purpose and eventually found the breakthrough. A free-kick dropped invitingly inside the Steels penalty area and fell to Macaulay Snelgrove. His initial effort took two deflections as it made its way through a crowded area, ultimately finding the back of Ben Townsend’s net to give the hosts the lead.

Stocksbridge looked for a response and came agonisingly close to finding one.
