Families read together in new initiative South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard’s new flagship reading project has got off to a flying start following a celebrated launch across the region. The Mayor’s Little Big Book Club saw 4,000 free books handed out to local children, kicking off a major drive to boost literacy, encourage storytelling, and foster a lifelong love of reading among young people and families. The initiative officially launched alongside the inaugural South Yorkshire Festival of Reading, which brought a summer-long celebration of books to a spectacular climax with community events across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield. Among the highlights was a bustling family fun day at Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park, where hundreds of children gathered for Gruffalo-themed story trails, live performances, face painting, sports tasters, and creative workshops. Every child left with a free story sack to

cover that joy for themselves.
Reflecting on the success of the launch events, Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "If you were lucky enough to have books around you as a kid, you’ll probably remember the first one you fell in love with.
"Not because somebody tells them reading is good for them, but because they find a story they can't put down. Because they get excited about turning the page. Because reading becomes something they love, something they share, something that's part of everyday life.
"Most of us can remember it. We can remember the characters. We can remember where we read it. We can remember the person who shared it with us. "That's because stories stay with us. They spark our imagination. They make us laugh. They help us explore new worlds and see things differently. “And we know reading brings so many benefits for young people. It helps build confidence, creativity and communication skills. It opens up opportunities and can shape a child's future in ways they might not even realise at the time.
"That's what the Little Big Book Club is all about. "We started that journey through the Festival of Reading, bringing stories to life for thousands of children and families across South Yorkshire. But our ambition goes much further than one summer or one event. "We want every kid in our region to know that books, stories and reading are for them. Because every child deserves the chance to fall in love with reading."

From Stocksbridge to the bestseller lists – Matt Coyne returns home in his new novel For many people who grew up in Stocksbridge, memories of the 1980s are filled with familiar sights, sounds and characters – the steelworks dominating the valley, summer days spent roaming the streets with friends, Bracken Moor, the Whitwell, the X67 bus and the freedom to disappear for hours until it was time to go home for tea. For bestselling author Matt Coyne, those memories have provided the inspiration for his second novel, The Trouble with Sister Francis, which is set in a fictionalised version of the Stocksbridge and Deepcar he knew as a child. Matt, who grew up on the Whitwell, is perhaps best known to many for creating the hugely popular Man vs Baby social media phenomenon, which has attracted more than half a million followers. He is also the author of multiple Sunday Times bestselling books, including Dummy, Man vs Toddler and his award-winning debut novel Frank & Red, as well as children's books including The Only Monster. His latest novel takes him back to the early 1980s and a place that clearly remains close to his heart. Stocksbridge becomes “Stockston” and Deepcar becomes “the Deepings”, but Matt says local readers will recognise the valley, its landmarks and, perhaps most importantly, its people.
From the steelworks and Bracken Moor to St Ann's Church and even the X67 bus, the book is packed with the small details that can transport anyone who grew up locally straight back to their childhood.
Asked what do you hope local readers will get from the book? And if you could take someone back to one place or moment in 1980s Stocksbridge for a day, where would you take them and why?
Matt recalls his memories of growing up on the Whitwell Estate “My strongest memories are of the freedom of it, especially in the Summer Holidays. You’d disappear in the morning, find your mates and basically make your own entertainment, or get up to no good, until somebody’s mum shouted you in for tea.
I hope local readers recognise the place and the people and feel like I’ve got the spirit of it right.
The steelworks was always this huge presence. It was part of the scenery, the noise and the identity of the town. The clanging and banging was comforting in a strange way. It was the sound of home. And that contrast was always there. You had these huge works at the bottom of the valley, then steep hills, fields and stunning open countryside all around you. Before the bypass was built it was in all directions. As kids, though, we didn’t really think about any of that. It was just where we lived. There were kids everywhere, everybody knew everybody else’s business, and a patch of waste ground or a bit of woodland, the glen or the garages at the top of Cedar Rd, could become your entire world for hours.”
And if I could take somebody back for one day, I’d take them to the Playscheme on Bracken Moor Fields, around 1985. Perfect weather. The hosepipe spraying water over a rubber slip n’ slide. Rolling barrels down those steep bankings with your mates inside them, (we had a very relaxed attitude to head injuries in the 1980s). There’d be music playing, Winston Wallis on the microphone, hundreds of kids running around, and the summer holidays stretching ahead of you into infinity. No phones, no plans and no idea what day it was. What a time to be alive.

QUILTERS CELEBRATE VILLAGE PAST & PRESENT In the depths of winter 2025 Bolsterstone Village Hall’s committee commissioned Bolsterstone Quilters to create a wall quilt to celebrate all the past and present community groups that use Bolsterstone Village Hall for their various activities. Bolsterstone Village Hall was constructed in 1851/52. Built in local stone to match the historic look of the village, it operated as Bolsterstone National School and was also known as the Church School. In 1886 it merged with the older Bolsterstone Free School sited on Morehall Lane and both spaces taught local children. In 1992, due to falling numbers of students, the school closed its doors to pupils after more than a century of education. Happily, the building found a new lease of life, as local people created a community trust to use the building,
which is now known as Bolsterstone Village Hall. It features a large main hall with wooden floors and acts as a central hub for community gatherings, private parties, and local events. It is also the official rehearsal home for the famous Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir. There are over 24 community groups associated with Bolsterstone Village Hall and the committee wanted them all to be represented on the quilt. Bolsterstone Quilter’s members volunteered to make quilted and appliquéd 12inch square blocks to represent each of the community groups/events, from craft club and afternoon teas to yoga and the Bolsterstone Summer Festival. The individual blocks were then centred around a panel depicting the hall itself with its lovely floral displays, beautiful street lamp and water

Each corner of the quilt then shows the crest on seen on the large, elaborate carved stone and leaded window.
The quilt can be seen at Bolsterstone Quilter’s biennial Quilt and Textile Show on Sunday 20th September 10am to 4pm at Bolsterstone Village Hall, S36 3 ZF. Entry £3 to include full colour programme covering over 40 quilts, craft workshops and stall, book stall and tombola stall together with hot and cold homemade savoury and sweet bakes (cash only please). MP Visits Penistone’s Worldleading Wire Manufacturer Call 0114 283 1100
www.looklocal.org.uk
Marie Tidball, Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stocksbridge, visited Stanley Wire in Penistone, who manufactures steel wire and secondary products, including innovative new products. In one year, Stanley Wire’s Penistone site produces 5,000 tonnes of wire, which is enough to wrap around the Earth more than two times.
The family-run firm was founded in 1959 and its steel wire product is made from British-made steel and sold across Britain and internationally. It is used for galvanising, in construction and the automotive industries, and by steelworks, amongst other uses. It is also the UK’s only producer of copper coated wire. The company also produces some secondary materials. These include a new product which has recently secured patents in the UK, US, Australia, and is now awaiting final approval by the regulator. This Penistone innovation – called

Contilink – could be revolutionary in the industry.
Marie sat down with Director Chris Ward, son of founder Peter Ward, and Operations Manager, Henry Bower, to discuss the impact of tariffs on EU steel on the industry. Marie will be raising the impacts of these tariffs on this important local employer – by writing to the Government as the firm’s local MP. Marie Tidball, Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stocksbridge, said: “Stanley Wire is an incredibly impressive firm based right here in Penistone leading in the manufacture of steel wire and performing world-leading innovation on some of the secondary products they make. They’re a proud local company, founded in 1959. “They are one of only three steel wire mills remaining in Britain, and the only one manufacturing coppered steel wire. All the steel they buy in is very high-quality British-made steel.

“I grew up with Operations Manager Henry Bower – he used to play football in my back garden, with my brother, in Penistone. So I was really proud to see such amazing an homegrown talent bringing manufacturing innovation to our Town.. “I am also working with them to look identify some national funding options to help invest in the business’s infrastructure and help increase its output capacity. “At the heart of the Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s vision for a reindustrialised Britain, is this kind of firm. Impressive, high-quality work, providing good jobs for local people.”
Youth club appeals for volunteers to support growing group A Wharncliffe Side youth club is appealing for new volunteers to help support its growing number of young people attending weekly sessions. Wharncliffe Dragons Youth Group meets on Monday evenings from 5.45pm to 7.30pm and is looking for adults aged 18 and over who can offer their time weekly, fortnightly or even monthly.

“I was really proud to hear about some of the innovative secondary products they manufacture on site. This includes a brandnew product called Contilink currently awaiting final regulatory approval, having achieved patents all over the world.
No previous experience in youth work is required. Volunteers will help supervise indoor and outdoor activities, plan sessions, set up equipment and take part in activities including cooking. A DBS check is required, but the group will arrange and pay for this. Regular volunteers
can also access fully funded training, including First Aid, Safeguarding, Food Hygiene and Youth Leader development. Group leader Jill Nichols said: “Our volunteers make such a difference simply by showing up, listening and getting stuck in. It is a lovely atmosphere and we would love to welcome a few more people who want to be part of it.” The opportunity could suit anyone interested in youth work, education or social care, as well as retired people looking to give something back locally. Anyone interested can email wharncliffeyouthgroup@gmail.com or visit the Wharncliffe Side Youth Group Facebook page.

Sheffield faces £8.35m overspend despite improved long-term finances Reports going before the council’s Strategy and Resources Committee on September 2 will set out the latest financial position for 2026/27, alongside an updated Medium-Term Financial Strategy covering the period from 2027/28 to 2030/31. The council's latest mid-case forecast puts its budget gap at £10.4 million by 2030/31. That is a substantial improvement on previous forecasts, which had suggested the council could face funding gaps of around £70 million over a similar period. The council says the improved outlook is partly due to expected national funding reforms, stronger financial management, updated forecasts around future demand and its ongoing Future Sheffield transformation programme. Future Sheffield is expected to deliver £66.6 million in savings as the council looks to modernise services and improve efficiency.

However, the council is also facing more immediate financial pressures. Its Quarter 1 budget monitoring report forecasts an £8.35 million overspend during 2026/27. According to the report, much of the current pressure is linked to delays in delivering savings planned in previous years and transformation work, rather than widespread increases in demand for council services. Recovery measures are already being introduced across a number of service areas. The council says the latest figures underline the need to continue investing in transformation while protecting essential services and carefully managing its reserves. Philip Gregory, Director of Finance at Sheffield City Council, said the city was now in a "much stronger financial position" than it had been for a number of years. He said the improvement reflected "careful financial management, improved funding
Mayor welcomes funding to build more quality council, social and affordable homes South Yorkshire's Mayor Oliver Coppard has welcomed the Government's announcement of funding for the region to enable the building of more quality council, social and affordable homes in South Yorkshire:
cial and affordable homes in South Yorkshire is a significant step forward and will help us to continue our significant progress towards ending the use of temporary and poor-quality accommodation for families and children.
South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "Everyone deserves the security of a safe, warm and affordable home, yet too many families across South Yorkshire are still living in temporary accommodation or waiting too long for a place to call home.
"Devolution works because decisions are made closer to our communities. Working with Homes England, our councils and housing association partners, we're ready to build the right homes in the right places, and give more people across South Yorkshire the security of a place they can call home."

certainty and the work we are doing through Future Sheffield". But he acknowledged there were still challenges ahead, particularly around delivering planned savings and transformation programmes. "Our focus remains on protecting vital services, investing in long-term improvements and making sure the Council is financially sustainable so we can continue delivering for Sheffield’s residents now and in the future," he said. The reports will be considered by councillors at the Strategy and Resources Committee meeting on September 2.

More than 1,600 people have taken part in a programme of free family events across North Sheffield this summer, providing entertainment, activities and food for children and families during the school holidays. Events were held at Ecclesfield Park, Stannington Park, Chapeltown Park and Stocksbridge Youth Centre, with Sheffield City Council’s North Local Area Committee (LAC) working with local organisations to provide a wide range of activities.
Children could also get involved with gaming on Sheffield United’s gaming van, while Sheffield Wednesday helped keep youngsters active with football and multi-sport activities. Local community organisations and groups attended the events with stalls, giving residents the opportunity to find out more about the services, activities and support available in their communities.
Families were able to enjoy free bouncy castles, multi-sports, face painting, video gaming and football, alongside free meals, fresh fruit and drinks.
The summer programme formed part of Sheffield City Council’s wider Cost of Living project, which has also supported free community meals in the Stocksbridge and Ecclesfield areas, as well as winter warm events and health and wellbeing activities.
The programme was designed to help families facing the increasing challenge of keeping children entertained and fed during the long summer holidays.
Organisers say the programme will continue throughout the year, with further events planned to engage with and support residents across the North area.
One parent said: “It was so nice not to have to worry about if I could afford to bring my three children.”
The North LAC also has funding available for community groups through the Great North Fund, covering the wider North area, as well as individual ward pots.
The events were supported by councillors across the North area, with funding also provided by Ecclesfield Parish Council, Ecclesfield Charities, Children and Youth Services and the Holiday Activity Fund.
Public meetings are held every quarter at different venues, giving local residents the opportunity to put forward their views and speak directly to their councillors. For more information about the North Local Area Committee and available funding, email NorthLac@sheffield.gov.uk.

BATTY ABOUT BATS
A Sheffield musical theatre society is looking for new members to join the cast of its next production, My Fair Lady, which will be performed in April 2027 at Rotherham Civic Theatre.
The Hub and Barnsley Bat Group are joining forces to organise the evening. Rob Andrew, from the Bat Group, will kick off the evening by sharing knowledge about the lives and behaviour of British bats. Then groups will radiate from the Hub in Ben Bank Road, armed with bat detectors, to return 45 minutes later to report on how many bats and species they picked up and enjoy refreshments.
Spokesperson for the Hub, Pete Riley said “This is the first event where we will be investigating the wildlife of Silkstone Common. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. They form part of a nationwide roll-out of 45 surrender bins. Three others have been placed at fire stations in Rotherham, Barnsley and Sheffield in agreement with local violence reduction, policing and community safety partners.
I joined what was then known as Stocksbridge Works RUFC in April1964 and served on the committee from 1965 until 1990, covering the formative years and the growth of the club to become a wellestablished feature in the area. Before 1995 Rugby Union was a strictly amateur game, there were no leagues and each club was responsible for arranging its games. As the playing performance of the club improved it was necessary to improve the fixture list to include better opposition. I was Fixture Secretary from 1967 until 1980 and arranged the opposition for every game over that 13year period so perhaps you will forgive me indulging in a bit of nostalgia. by Steve Moxon
Over 15,000 knives and offensive weapons have been removed over the past year. These have included ninja swords, zombie-style knives, machetes, swords and kitchen knives. In South Yorkshire these bins are just one strand of the work the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) is doing to tackle knife crime. The VRU brings together partners from across the county to deliver an approach that aligns prevention and enforcement activity with a shared responsibility and collective commitment to create better futures for children and young people. South Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, said: “Knives have no place on the streets of South Yorkshire. This initiative will give people a safe and anonymous way to hand in weapons in what we see as a positive step that will help to save lives and reduce the risk of harm in our communities. “The sheer number of knives that have been handed in nationally shows the importance of having somewhere they can be dropped off with no questions asked. It is just another small way of making people in South Yorkshire safer.” The surrender bins operate on a ‘no questions asked’ basis to encourage people who may otherwise be reluctant to handover their weapons in fear of the consequences. The weapons must Public Legal Notice

The Wortley Highwayman
As part of the Stocksbridge Works Social Services It does seem that Wortley (outdoing a claim organisation funding was provided, most employees paying a subscription by a deduction from their for Pontefract) gave us the famous mounted bandit, John Nevison, albeit much else wages to cover the various social clubs. I can’t remember exactly when Mick joined the committee but I’m sure it was in the time I was Fixture Secretary. The limitations of being part of the works organisation meant that we couldn’t have our own clubhouse, we were expected to use the Victory Club but this didn’t fit with our requirements so we entertained the opposition in a succession of local pubs after the match. In those days of stricter pub opening hours, the landlord had to apply for a special licence to open at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. Also, the fact that the “Works” in the club name didn’t reflect the membership as many of the members didn’t work there and it tended to be a perceived hindrance in improving the fixture list. It was therefore decided in 1981 to break away from the works organisation and become an independent club. I was chairman of the club from 1981 until 1985 and Mick was the secretary. He was tireless in leading the negotiations to obtain the chapel from Sheffield Corporation, liaison with the RFU regarding the change in status under the name of Stocksbridge RUFC and obtaining the necessary licencing and legal requirements for opening a club, plus subsequent negotiations with Ward’s brewery to obtain a loan for fitting out the bar. The setting up of the new club structure required a number of Trustees and Mick, Nigel George, Julian Milnes and myself became the Trustees and remained as such until the club was reconstituted as a company limited by guarantee. Almost all the rebuilding work on the chapel was done by club members. The ground floor bar was opened in 1984 and the upper function room was opened in 1988. Don’t forget that over this period there was no email, text or video conferencing to communicate with organisations, everything had to be done by face to face contact, phone or postal letter. Mick’s later invaluable contributions regarding purchase of land and the changing facilities have been mentioned in other tributes.
about him is a tall tale. There’s the standard ‘but he only robbed the rich, wasn’t violent, and was very polite’ bigging-up, in later literary works, of an alpha male baddy.
On his horse Nutmeg, Nevison was famed for a deed often mis-attributed to Dick Turpin and his Black Bess: a lightning-speed 200-mile ride from Kent to York to provide an alibi for a robbery in which he’d been recognised. Needing a reputable person able to recall him and the time, Nevison collared the Lord Mayor at his bowling match, memorably placing a bet on the outcome. The ruse got him nicknamed Swift Nick or Swift Nix, reputedly by an amused King Charles II (himself once a fugitive), but nevison hardly shortens to nicks, and some say the feat was that of one Samuel Nicks. Nevison’s fame suffered anyway when Harrison Ainsworth used the exploit in his 1834 novel, Rookwood, putting Dick Turpin in Nevison’s place, for this version to capture the public. He’s said to have grown up in Tivydale Cottage (now rebuilt) right behind Wortley Church. We know from a 1772 letter that John Nevison’s eponymous dad was steward at Wortley Hall (and brother William schoolmaster). John son of John was baptised at Tankersley in 1648 (possibly long delayed from the suggested 1639 birth year by the Civil War).
So he wasn’t poor, and would expect to succeed his dad as steward, yet the story goes he was a teenage runaway after stealing a silver spoon worth four shillings from his father to give to a woman in the village to swap for ... fruit. What (for that price), 15 stones of it? Dad John sought her out to Hugh Everson, Past Chairman and former Trustee, check. You don’t say?
I don’t know when he was given the nickname of Grov, I always knew him as Mick Gribbins and that is how I will remember him and reflect on the times I enjoyed working with him. Often, he worked quietly in the background without fuss with persistent determination to achieve the desired outcome.

This screams allegory, the key to which is a record of a Wakefield Quarter Session of 1671: “John Nevison younger of Wortley is charged to be the reputed father of a Bastard chyld by him begotten upon the body of one Anne Waynwright”.
I am writing to inquire about the parking provisions for the 519 development, which is looking like a monstrosity on the main road. A couple of questions: 1. How is such a large building going to be filled? 2. Where are all the occupants of this enormous building going to park? Maybe the He forfeited the silver spoon he was born Town’s fund board can answer these questions. A concerned Stocksbridge resident. with in his mouth for forbidden fruit. The
four shillings? For the era, that looks like a monthly sum set for the upkeep of a ‘baseborn’ child, that if it could the parish passed to the father, or, by threatening to imprison him, to the grandfather. Payments would be for the ‘period of nurture’; seven years, ahead of the kid being apprenticed out. To completely escape this – the parish having no recourse to obtain back payment -- the father could just sling his hook. Nevison’s reckoned to have hopped it to London where he worked as a brewer’s clerk for a good while, before absconding with the money of a debt he’d been sent to collect. This appears more allegory, but what came next rings true: joining the army. The classic move to evade a bastardy order. Few questions asked. Trouble is, you’re discharged (as was Nevison) when things went quiet; no money in lieu. You kept your weaponry though, and you’d gained the skills and the nerve to use them. No wonder typically highwaymen were ex-forces. This trajectory supposedly was interrupted by Nevison returning to Wortley to care for his father until he died; apparently broke. A steward impecunious? With or without an inheritance, John junior had no job. We’re told this is when he began his ‘stand and deliver!’ routine. Was it pique that he didn’t (wasn’t allowed to) step into his dad’s shoes as steward (as would be usual)? Successful he was too, for a decade. Based at the Talbot Inn, Newark, with safe houses in Wentbridge and Tuxford, he plied the Great North Road. Eventually luck expired and he had to offer to name others of his band (actually already betrayed) for a death sentence to be commuted to transportation. En route to his export he escaped, only to kill a policeman when cornered, guaranteeing the net would close. Informed on, he was captured at The Magpie, Sandal, the worse for several too many, asleep in a chair (that someone thought to preserve for posterity in St Helen’s Church). As “a terrour to the country”, in 1864 Nevison was executed at York’s aptly named Knavesmire. So was it simply that Nevison had thieving in him, as imputed; or an unravelling from ‘wrong side of the sheets’ youthful misfortune?

STEEL CITY CUP FINALISTS ANNOUNCED AS THOUSANDS RAISED FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHARITY
The 2026 Steel City Cup, hosted by teenage racing star Rowan Campbell-Pilling, has announced this year’s finalists following another successful round of qualifying events, as he aims to raise over £5,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. Sixteen Yorkshire-based companies, spanning 20 teams, went head-to-head over three qualifying racing events at Parkwood Karting in Neepsend. Teams of four raced on a 470m track in a 20-minute qualifying session – setting grid positions, followed by a further 1 hour 40-minute race – competing in over 130 fast action laps. The finalists, which have now been announced, are Airmaster Air Conditioning, Ellis Willis & Beckett, Gripple, H Harrold & Sons, Irwin Mitchell, Monaghans, Nal Plant,
Taylor Emmet Solicitors (Rowan’s newest partner) and WPA Health Practice PLC.
Steel City Cup will help patients and their families.”
These teams will return to Parkwood Karting on September 17 to raise further funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and to compete for the coveted ‘Steel City Cup’ title.
Rowan has been an ambassador for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity since 2022 and, to date, has raised over £35,000 for the charity.
Rowan said: “It’s been absolutely brilliant to be part of such an exciting tournament. Each business has wowed me with their unmatched dedication, stamina and passion. “Throughout the competition, I’ve shared my racing tips and tricks and even got behind the wheel during one team’s final stint, where I set a new lap record. I’m now looking forward to seeing everyone again for the final. “Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity is a charity which sits close to my heart and this championship is our way of giving back. We hope the money raised throughout this year’s
The money has helped fund specialist medical equipment and new facilities to ensure the charity can provide the best possible treatment for its patients and match the worldclass care they receive. Rob Gurruchaga, Patrons and Ambassador Manager from The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We’re so pleased that the Steel City Cup has got off to such a strong start, with an impressive amount already raised. We can’t wait for the grand final in September! “We’re grateful for Rowan’s continued support and we can’t thank him enough for being part
of our team. The funds he raises makes a huge difference to the lives of our patients, families and staff.” After two successful seasons in F4, Rowan is currently competing in the 2026 UK GB3 Championship with his team Xcel Motorsport. So far this season, Rowan has won trophies at Hungaroring and Silverstone and he is currently ranking eighth overall in the official standings. His next race will be at Donington on September 3-6. Rowan is proud of his roots and is eager to represent the Steel City, and the wider region, wherever he goes, proudly standing as Sheffield – and Yorkshire’s – only GB3 driver. GEARING UP TO GET MORE PEOPLE MOVING BY E-BIKE People in South Yorkshire will be able to hire e-bikes and take them home as part of a firstof-its-kind scheme being launched by Mayor Oliver Coppard. Other city-based schemes around the country generally see users booking bikes for short trips and needing to find suitable spots to drop them off. But the new South Yorkshire scheme will become the most flexible operation in the country ahead of its planned launch next spring. Part of the South Yorkshire People’s Network, it will make e-bikes cheaper and easier to access, giving people more freedom and choice in how they travel for regular journeys. South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “The idea at the heart of the South Yorkshire People’s Network is that transport should work for everyone in South Yorkshire, giving
us all freedom and choice about how we travel and move.
helping to get the scheme rolling ahead of its planned launch in spring 2027.
“That’s why we’ve designed this pioneering new e-bike subscription service; because it’s not enough to simply build bike lanes and cycle networks, we need to give everyone the chance to use them.
The scheme has been shaped by research showing how e-bikes can help people travel further and make everyday journeys easier, and data from the short-term loan schemes operating in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
“So, from next spring, people across South Yorkshire will be able to hire a new e-bike on a long-term loan, for an affordable monthly price. That’s potentially game changing for anyone who wants to make different travel choices but has been priced out up to now.
With transport costs continuing to put pressure on households, the scheme’s flexible, first-of-its-kind tiered pricing model will help make sure cost does not put the brakes on opportunity.
“I’m proud to say we’re the first place in the country to develop this type of scheme, but I know we won’t be the last. South Yorkshire is leading the way again, putting the public back in public transport.”
It forms a key part of South Yorkshire’s Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy, supporting plans to make walking, wheeling and cycling more realistic, accessible options for more people.
Backed by initial investment of £1.3m, the first 275 e-bikes are now out to procurement,
Further details on pricing, eligibility and how to sign up will be announced ahead of launch.

BROOM EARNS ENGLAND HONOUR AS KILPIN RACES TO FLEETWOOD VICTORY
John Broom enjoyed the honour of representing England Masters against Wales Masters in the Male Masters International 3000m at Deeside Stadium. Broom finished 14th overall and sixth in the men’s over55 category in 1135.75, recording a season’s best and setting a new Penistone Footpath Runners club record for the age category. There was also outright race success for Damian Kilpin at the Fleetwood Kendal Mint Cake 10K. Kilpin led the field home in 39-09, finishing more than two and a half minutes clear of the runner-up. Harriet Drouin came agonisingly close to another Penistone victory at Edale’s Ring of Hell Half Marathon. On a brutal Peak District course of approximately 16 miles with around 4,000 feet of climbing, Drouin finished ninth overall and second lady in 4-35-20, missing out on the women’s win by just 64 seconds. Flynn Rogers was first home at the Decathlon Sheffield RunDays 5K, completing the untimed community event in approximately 17-21 according to his watch. Oliver Found completed the Carsington Water Trail Half Marathon in 1-49-28 to finish 47th overall, with the run also his second-fastest half marathon to date.
took third at Castle in 19-07. Dawn and John Broom both claimed age-category victories and personal bests at Old Railway Trail, with Dawn running 22-31 for first lady over60 and John 22-36 for first man over55. Shaun Swallow was first man over55 at Marshall Drive, Jon Hallam first man over45 at Lowestoft and Julia Johnson first lady over60 at York Community Woodland. Ian Neville, Sue Hall and Ray Brown all won their respective age categories at Barnsley. Women filled all five places in the weekend’s age-graded leaderboard, headed by Dawn Broom with an excellent 87.24%, followed by Barbara Haigh 83.84%, Julia Johnson 82.79%, Dawn Godley 78.81% and Sue Braddock 78.73%. Results North Wales Endurance Open 2, Male Masters International 3000m 14, John Broom 11-35.75. Fleetwood Kendal Mint Cake 10K 1, Damian Kilpin 39-09.
was testament to both bowlers for the pressure they had built up. Scoring was proving very difficult, with the home side on just 10-1 after the first 12 overs. Brearley bowled another metronomic spell, with his 10 overs going for just 16 runs! The hosts managed to begin to find their feet, building to 38-1 after 20 overs.
Edale’s Ring of Hell Half Marathon 9, Harriet Drouin 4-35-20.
Overseas, Dan Cooper flew the Penistone flag at the Bradelier Loop 10K in De Lier, Netherlands, finishing 158th overall in 48-49 on a sunny and windy urban course around the town. Cooper also had the distinction of being the fastest, and only, UK runner in the race. Closer to home, Kelvin Bowskill represented Penistone at the Treeton Bolt, finishing 89th overall in 43-52.
Carsington Water Trail Half Marathon
There was plenty to celebrate at parkrun, where 70 Penistone seniors competed across 22 venues. Thirteen clubmates travelled to Brackenhurst Campus to help Keith Gordon celebrate his remarkable 500th parkrun, which was also his 300th different parkrun event. Gordon marked the occasion by finishing first in the men’s over75 category in 27-28, while Sue Braddock was first lady over60 in 25-00. At Penistone, Sean Pitt claimed outright victory in 17-29, with Ashley Firth third in 17-52. Oliver France was first under20 in 18-48, Damian Kilpin first over45 in 19-07 and Alex Crosby celebrated breaking the 20-minute barrier with a personal best of 1959. Barbara Haigh topped the ladies over75 category in 31-09, while Sara Wolstenholme also recorded a Penistone personal best with 26-24.
Penistone Parkrun
There were more outright successes away from the club’s home event. Tom Fryers won Frickley Country parkrun in 17-55, with James Fryers third in 20-21, while Flynn Rogers

Following a double bowling change, young spinner Archie Jowitt came into the attack after drinks and immediately turned the tie on it’s head. Jowitt took 2 wickets in his first over, the first thanks to a cracking catch by Fin Siddall! Jowitt removed key man Garnett, before dismissing Fearnley the very next ball! Jowitt wasn’t finished there, as he picked up the further key scalps of Shepherd
and Bocking over the course of the next few overs. John Musgrove joined the party, picking up 2 wickets and maintaining the pressure from the other end, however it was Jowitt’s day for certain! 50-3 became 69-8, with ‘Bridge eager to wrap up the tail. James Hague picked up 2 late wickets, before Archie claimed his 5th wicket with his very last ball, thanks to an excellent acrobatic stumping by Dom Gentlesmith! 90 all out was a brilliant first-half by the 2nds, who now needed to see it home with the bat. Openers Hague and Ogley started well, racing to 22-0 in very quick time. Jon Pickford them came to the middle to join Hague and the pair continued in the same fashion. After 8 overs, ‘Bridge

WOMEN CELEBRATE LEAGUE TITLE AND SHOW CRICKET REALLY IS FOR EVERYONE Oughtibridge Women and Girls Team 2 Softball are celebrating a fantastic season after being crowned South Yorkshire 3rd West Division champions. The league triumph caps a season of hard work, new friendships and growing confidence for a team which prides itself on being as inclusive off the pitch as it is competitive on it. Oughtibridge has three women’s and girls’ teams, with Team 2 enjoying some memorable victories along the way against local sides including Stocksbridge, Thorncliffe, Wentworth and Worsborough. The squad includes women of different ages, backgrounds and levels of cricketing experience. Some had never played cricket before joining, while others returned to the sport after many years away. Captain Sue Cockbill-Black has played an important role in creating that environment, encouraging players to improve while making sure everyone feels included and valued. She is particularly passionate about supporting the team’s younger members. One of those youngsters, Izzy, is now representing the region in South Yorkshire games. The players describe a team where everyone plays their part – scoring runs, taking wickets, making a catch or cheering from the boundary.
WITH 5 WICKET HAUL were already 40-1 and nearly halfway to their desired total. Hague looked in superb touch, scoring freely and in complete control of the chase. Pickford and Lowe fell in quick succession to give the home side something to cheer, however Hague and Musgrove saw the victory home with relative ease! Another fantastic victory for the 2nd XI, which sees them within touching distance of the league title. Jowitt & Hague the stars of the show, however it was a tremendous team effort throughout Stocksbridge 1st XI 138-6 (M Price 39, J Tevendale 29) Bradfield Village Fellowship 1st XI 132 all out (A Hibbert 4-23, J Hibbert 2-19, L Grayson 2-28)
The 1st XI hosted neighbours Bradfield at Lucas Wheels Bracken Moor this week, looking to secure another vital win and stay in the promotion and championship hunt. Skipper Hirst won the toss and elected to field first and restrict the visitors. Andy Hibbert and 13 year old Oliver Perry opened the bowling and started well. Hibbert made the first breakthrough with 22 on the scoreboard, with Wilson finding Joe Goddard’s safe hands. After a 33 run stand for the 2nd wicket, it was double delight for Liam Grayson, who removed Roberts and Jackson in successive deliveries. With Bradfield now at 55-3, the 1sts were looking to turn the screw and rattle through the middle order. The legendary
Andy Hibbert did just that, picking up 3 further wickets in an excellent spell of bowling. 55-1 became 71-7 in the blink of an eye, with ‘Bridge now looking to get the innings wrapped up. The Bradfield lower order provided some resistance, with Stokes digging in well. Joe Hibbert eventually dismissed him for 24, before picking up another, with James Tevendale claiming the final wicket. The visitors had wrestled back well from 71-7 to post 132, but Stocksbridge were still very happy with their 1st half ’s work.
Unfortunately, the chase got off to a less than ideal start, with Goddard falling after just 7 balls. Old pals Steve Perry and Matt Price then took ‘Bridge forward, forging a 32 run partnership before
Perry was dismissed for 19. Matt Price was providing a solid foundation to the chase, however his partners kept coming and going. Following 2 more quick wickets, the 1st XI were 57-4, with Bradfield feeling well and truly in the contest. James Tevendale then came to the middle to join Price, with the duo calming proceedings with a crucial 54 run stand. Price was eventually dismissed for a vital 39, leaving ‘Bridge requiring just 22 runs from 16 overs. Tevendale fell shortly after to keep the neutrals interested, however Dave Sedgwick and Parag Tawade saw the victory home, with plenty of time still remaining. 12 more vital points, which sees the 1sts still in 2nd place, with only 3 games remaining!
Training sessions combine cricket with plenty of laughter, while the players regularly organise social activities away from the pitch. For many, the team has become an important part of their social lives, providing something to look forward to each week, a chance to stay active and an opportunity to make lasting friendships. With clubs in nearby towns and villages, women and girls can now play competitively without having to travel long distances. Oughtibridge believes local fixtures against teams such as Stocksbridge, Thorncliffe, Wentworth and Worsborough are helping create a community around the women’s game. And the league champions have a simple message for anyone considering giving cricket a try: just give it a go. Players don’t need to be sporty, experienced or even know the rules to get involved. Softball cricket provides a relaxed way to learn the game, with experienced players on hand to help newcomers. The team hopes its title success will encourage more women and girls to discover the sport. For Oughtibridge, the greatest achievement may ultimately be seeing more people realise that there really is a place for everyone in cricket – whatever their age or ability. Congratulations to Oughtibridge Women on a brilliant season!
RUNNING FOR CHARITY
Sunday was the annual Decathlon 5k charity event, several hundred runners took to the streets to run a relaxed 5k all for a chosen local charity. Christopher and Jayne Grayson from High Green Harriers ran the event that although wasn’t a very scenic route around the moor area of Sheffield was good fun as it wasn’t competitive it was a relaxed social that anyone could take part in. The weather turned very warm during the run but not like the very hot conditions of lately,at the end an array of goodies were waiting for the runners. Chris was on the comeback trail after injury and was pleased with his time of just under 27 minutes Jayne was celebrating after finishing first female timing just over 22 minutes.

STEELS SCRAP TO CUP WIN STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS 1 – 0 CHEADLE TOWN
Stocksbridge Park Steels picked up their first win of the season in scrappy fashion with a 1-0 victory over Cheadle Town. The Steels started the game quickly as they looked to get an early lead. But in a familiar story, they had the chances but did not take them. Romario Dunne did brilliantly to rob the Cheadle defender of the ball which allowed him to advance into the box. He would be denied by Schofield in the Cheadle goal though. He wasn’t the only striker to be denied though. Louie Ward’s first game on the right wing was going well and his looped cross found Josiah Dyer. His header though would be tipped over by Schofield who was proving himself to be in form. But not in-form enough. Alex O’Connor’s free kick from the right wing took a deflection on the way in and this allowed the ball to fall to Dunne. He just stabbed the ball towards goal and
this time Schofield had no chance as the ball nestled its way into the back of the net. The second half saw a change in the tides. Cheadle pushed forward and for the next 45 minutes, they had the bulk of the chances as they looked to force a replay on Tuesday night. But it was towards the end of the game when Cheadle’s pressure started to create some chances and therefore real scares for the Steels. It started with a surge from Stephen Maylett whose shot would be palmed past the post by Ben Townsend. However the real heart-inmouth moment came with a ball to the left that substitute Rhys Ferguson got on to the end it. It took an unconventional save from Townsend with his feet to deny the effort. This kept his clean sheet but more importantly, the Stocksbridge win. Next home games: Wednesday 26 Aug Lincoln Utd 7.45pm KO,

THREE WINS ON THE BOUNCE
PODIUM FINISHES FOR LADIES
Penistone Church continued their good start to the NCEL Premier Division season with a third consecutive league victory, edging past a hard-working Frickley Athletic side in a fivegoal thriller. A fantastic crowd of 304 watched the action at the Simply Log Cabins Memorial Ground, where Church produced a strong first-half display to take a 3–1 lead into the break. The opening goal was created by Nathan Keighley, whose delivery from the left found Reece High at the back post for a well-taken header. Frickley quickly responded with a back-post header of their own from a corner to level the game, but Church regained control. Keighley was again the provider, delivering another excellent ball from the left for Reece A busy weekend for Stocksbridge Running High to head home his second of the after- Club, as members took advantage of the cooler weather to take part in races across Yorknoon. shire. A flat route, favourable weather, and many miles of practice combined to see Cathy storm home in 5th place in 1:35:05 - brilliant running from Cathy. The intra-club Park Run competition saw points aplenty on the 15th August; Amy Hutchinson beat her overall Parkrun PB and improved her F40 club record at Millhouses in at time of 22:50. This result also moved Amy to the top of the standings. New club member Joe Hague beat his overall Parkrun PB and improved his Male Senior record at York in a time of 20:23.
