The grim discovery finally came in July 2025 when detectives traced an old cattle trailer that had been left untouched on a nearby farm since shortly after Mr Dyson disappeared in November 2019.

MP calls for improved play areas Call 0114 283 1100

www.looklocal.org.uk

Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Marie Tidball has called for improvements to local play facilities, raising concerns over ageing equipment at parks in Wharncliffe Side, Dodworth and High Green. Dr Tidball highlighted the need for investment in Dragon Park in Wharncliffe Side, Coronation Field in Dodworth and Mortomley Park in High Green after hearing concerns from residents during her ongoing ‘Pride in Place’ events across twelve communities in the constituency. Speaking during Business Questions in the House of Commons, the MP said she understood how important outdoor play was for children’s health and wellbeing, and asked how local communities could benefit from new Government funding for playground improvements. She told Parliament that better facilities were a priority for communities across her constituency, particularly at the three local parks.

Dr Tidball said she was “thrilled” that the Labour Government had committed £18 million to creating and refurbishing playgrounds across England and asked how she could access the funding to improve play areas for children growing up locally. Barnsley Council is set to receive £270,000 from the Government’s Playground Fund over the 2026/27 and 2027/28 financial years. The funding aims to support the refurbishment of play spaces, with councils expected to involve local communities in decisions while also focusing on accessible designs and long-term maintenance. Dr Tidball said: “As the summer holidays approach and with all the lovely sunny weather, I really hope that children across Penistone and Stocksbridge take the chance to spend plenty of time playing outside. “I know how important it is for wellbeing and that’s why I have made it a local priority.

“I raised this directly in Parliament, to ensure our communities benefit directly from the Government's dedicated funding to improve our local playgrounds.” She added: “Children growing up here – in Wharncliffe Side, Dodworth, and High Green – should enjoy the superb play facilities, where they can have fun and create memories which last a lifetime. “That’s why I am pleased that an additional £270,000 of funding has been provided by government to Barnsley Council. I will continue to work with the Government to champion Sheffield Council getting extra funding too, to improve our local parks and playgrounds.” The MP said she would continue pressing for investment in play facilities across both Barnsley and Sheffield areas of the constituency.

New crane arrives at Sheffield Forgemasters Call 0114 283 1100

www.looklocal.org.uk

Spanish Crane lifted into Sheffield Factory The first of 11 overhead cranes, each spanning up to 35 metres, has arrived at Sheffield Forgemasters’ New Machine Shop site from GH Cranes’ manufacturing facility in Northern Spain. The crane is one of two 150/40-tonne capacity cranes, with an additional four service cranes of 200/40 tonne capacity, five 250/50 tonne cranes, a tandem lifting beam for up to 400-tonnes lifting capacity all set for delivery by the end of the year. Manufacturer GH Cranes beat four other world-class crane manufacturers in the tender process to be awarded the contract to design and supply all overhead cranes required for the 30,000 m2 facility which will operate some of the world’s largest Vertical Turning Lathes. Harry McClean, Project Manager at Sheffield Forgemasters, who oversaw the crane’s arrival, said: “With our New Machine Shop building

now being clad, it is incredibly exciting to see the first overhead crane arrive on site, ready for installation. “The cranes are the first working elements of the new machine shop following installation of crane rails and electricity feeds and will be operational and in use as we work to assemble the new machines when they arrive.” Manufacture of the remaining cranes at GH is underway, and delivery aims to complete by the end of the year with one crane arriving each week in the interim. Sheffield-based PLS will be installing all the cranes on behalf of Sheffield Forgemasters. The machine shop project team consists of Arup, which handled the ecological and travel assessments, Bond Bryan Architects, and JLL, which acted on behalf of Sheffield Forgemasters for the site acquisition and planning submissions, and delivery support partner, Turner & Townsend.

Former Sheffield council leader rules out bid to win back his old seat The former leader of Sheffield City Council has confirmed he will not stand in the upcoming by-election for the ward he lost just three months ago.

In a statement announcing his resignation, Davies said he had made the decision because of concerns about his mental health.

Hunt added that, while he had considered the situation, he felt it was the “right time” for someone else to stand for Labour in the by-election.

Tom Hunt was among Labour’s casualties in May’s local elections, when he was defeated by Green Party candidate Andy Davies in Walkley.

He said he had not been prepared for the “huge weight of expectation and obligation” he felt after becoming a councillor.

His decision means Labour will now need to select a new candidate as the party attempts to regain the Walkley seat.

The by-election will now give voters in Walkley the opportunity to choose a new councillor, but Hunt has confirmed he will not attempt to return to the council.

The by-election is likely to attract significant interest given Hunt’s former position as council leader and the Greens’ success in taking the seat from Labour in May.

In a social media post, he said he was “sorry to see Andy Davies step down”.

Further details about the candidates and date of the by-election are expected to be announced in due course.

Hunt had represented the ward for four years and served as Sheffield City Council leader for three of those years. However, Davies resigned from his council position last week, triggering a by-election just months after he took the seat.

Drivers warned of A628 closures Motorists travelling between South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester are being advised to plan ahead, with the A628 Woodhead set to close in both directions for two separate two-day periods as essential repair work continues on the Woodhead Cascade. Road closure dates: Monday 10 August (12.01am) – Wednesday 12 August (6am) Monday 24 August (12.01am) – Wednesday 26 August (6am) The full closures are needed so a large crane can safely carry out repairs, with the equipment taking up the entire carriageway. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place. The Woodhead Cascade repair scheme is expected to continue until December 2026. If you're planning to travel on the A628, make sure you allow extra time and check your route before setting off.

Historic building could become SEND school Part of a historic former army barracks could be converted into a new school for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), writes Lucy Ashton BBC South Yorkshire political reporter. The gatehouse building of the Grade II listed Hillsborough Barracks in Sheffield would be turned into accommodation for Kingfisher Academy under plans submitted to the city council. The academy offers specialist educational for secondary-aged pupils between 11 and 16 years old who are unable to attend mainstream education due to significant medical needs, including high levels of anxiety and mental health conditions. Initially, it would accommodate about 40 pupils, with the flexibility to increase to a maximum of 60.

West Bar Property Rentals, which has submitted a planning application, said demand for SEND education in Sheffield had risen. The council said in 2024 that it was forecasting demand for another 300 SEND places over five years. 'High quality education' SLA Design Planning, on behalf of West Bar Property Rentals, said in the application the academy would provide "a tailored learning environment focused on supporting some of the city's most vulnerable young people".

08:00 and 16:30, while pupils would attend between 09:00 and 15:00. The application said the school would not need extensive outdoor facilities as activities would be carried out in local sports halls, parks and other community facilities. The school would secure the long-term viable use of the "historically significant building" and provide high quality specialist education. The gatehouse was originally an officers' mess and regimental institute dating from the mid-19th Century.

Its curriculum would be centred on English, maths and science, supplemented by wider subjects including humanities and food technology, it said.

The application said internal alterations would be made sensitively, architectural features would be preserved and it would prevent deterioration of the building.

Its four teachers, three support staff and one administrative member of staff would generally be present between

Planning officers are considering the application.

MP votes through Hillsborough Law after decades of campaigning by victims’ families Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Marie Tidball has voted in favour of the Hillsborough Law as the landmark legislation passed its final stage in the House of Commons. The Public Office (Accountability) Bill, known as the Hillsborough Law, aims to create a new legal duty of candour for public officials during inquiries, investigations and official proceedings, ensuring that the truth is properly disclosed. The legislation follows decades of campaigning by the families of the 97 people who lost their lives in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, who have fought for greater accountability and transparency from public bodies. The new law will introduce an offence of “misleading the public” where there has been deliberate deception, with those who breach the duty of candour facing serious penalties, including possible imprisonment. The Government has also amended the Bill to extend the duty of candour to individual employees of the intelligence services, while main-

taining protections for national security. The changes come alongside the biggest expansion of legal aid in a decade, designed to help bereaved families access high-quality legal representation without having to struggle to fund it themselves. The legislation will also restrict public authorities from using legal teams unless representation is necessary and proportionate, while requiring lawyers at inquests to focus on establishing the facts. Dr Tidball, who previously spoke in support of the Bill during its Second Reading in November 2025, said the moment marked a historic step towards justice.

“I vividly remember watching the coverage of the horrendous tragedy, transfixed to the screen. The images of the treatment of the fans by the police are etched in my memory.” Dr Tidball said the law represented a new chapter for victims and families affected by major injustices. She added: “Bereaved families turned their unimaginable loss into a fight for justice. 37 years later - my brother’s lifetime - this new law marks the beginning of a new chapter in our country’s history. “It resets the balance between the state and citizens to ensure injustice has no place to hide. This is what Labour Governments do.”

She said: “Being in the Chamber to vote the Hillsborough Law through its final stage in the Commons was a moment in history, the size of which I can’t quite comprehend.

The MP also paid tribute to the Hillsborough families and campaigners, thanking them for “decades of work” to bring about the changes.

“I remember the day the Hillsborough disaster happened. My brother was a baby, and my mum was a teacher at Meynell school - a mile away from Hillsborough Stadium at the edge of our constituency.

The Hillsborough Law is also intended to support victims of other major scandals, including the Post Office Horizon scandal, the infected blood scandal and the Grenfell Tower fire.

Sheffield fairground history to be celebrated thanks to National Lottery Heritage Fund grant One of Britain's oldest travelling fairground families is set to tell its remarkable story for the first time after receiving a £120,248 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The funding has been awarded to Jon Pullins Amusements Sheffield Ltd to deliver The Showmen of Sheffield, an ambitious two-anda-half-year heritage project celebrating the Pullin family's extraordinary contribution to Sheffield's social history while preserving traditional fairground skills that are now at risk of disappearing. For generations, the Pullin family has brought colour, excitement and entertainment to parks and open spaces across Sheffield, creating treasured memories for countless local families. Their remarkable story stretches back centuries, making them one of Britain's oldest travelling fairground families. Thanks to National Lottery players, the 30-month project will celebrate the Pullin family's unique heritage while recording the memories of the thousands of Sheffield people whose lives have been touched by the city's travelling fairs.

Volunteers and local communities will help collect photographs, memorabilia and oral histories, creating the first comprehensive archive of Sheffield's travelling showmen. The project will also explore the important role fairs have played in bringing communities together and helping generations of children and families create lasting memories in the city's parks.

“We’re thrilled to be supporting the Showmen of Sheffield project thanks to money raised by National Lottery players. Travelling fairgrounds will have brought joy to many over the years, so it is fantastic that this project will record that heritage for future generations and preserve traditional fairground crafts such as the instantly recognisable hand-painting we see when the fair comes to town.” The Showmen of Sheffield will work with volunteers, schools, community groups and heritage organisations throughout the project, ensuring that this important part of Sheffield's social history is preserved for future generations while giving the travelling showmen community the opportunity to tell its own story.

£80m investment could create 400 ‘Green jobs More than 400 new jobs could be created in Sheffield and South Yorkshire following an £86.5m investment in hydrogen technology manufacturer ITM Power. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has awarded £46.5m in government funding to ITM Power to support the development of its new Chronos manufacturing platform. The funding comes alongside a £40m equity investment from Great British Energy, the publicly owned energy company, completing an £86.5m package announced earlier this year. The investment will support a 1GW expansion of ITM Power's manufacturing facility in South Yorkshire. The company manufactures electrolysers, which are used to produce green hydrogen by using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The technology is seen as an important part of efforts to develop lower-carbon energy systems and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The expansion is expected to create more than 400 skilled manufacturing and construction jobs in Sheffield and across South Yorkshire. Councillor

Council’s lead for Transport, Regeneration and Climate, welcomed the investment. He said: “This funding is an important step forward in Sheffield’s industrial future. Great British Energy is helping to transition to a post-carbon future and creating hundreds of good green jobs in the process.” Great British Energy’s investment will also give the public sector a 10.8 per cent ownership stake in ITM Power. Councillor Parekh said the public investment would allow taxpayers to share in the value created by the growth of the green energy sector. The new Chronos manufacturing platform is expected to significantly increase ITM Power’s production capacity as demand for green hydrogen technology develops. The investment is being made as the UK looks to expand its domestic clean energy manufacturing sector and develop technologies aimed at supporting the transition towards a lower-carbon economy. The expansion is expected to strengthen Sheffield and South Yorkshire’s role in the developing green energy industry, while creating new employment opportunities in the region.

Public invited to help shape next generation of Supertrams People are being given the chance to help design the next generation of Supertrams as part of plans to modernise the region's public transport network. The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has launched a six-week public consultation inviting residents to share their views on a brand-new tram fleet, which will replace the current vehicles after more than 30 years in service. The new fleet will form a key part of the South Yorkshire People's Network, the region's vision for a fully integrated public transport system linking communities, jobs, education and healthcare. From Monday, August 10 until Friday, September 18, members of the public can complete an online survey covering issues including accessibility, seating, passenger comfort, onboard technology, safety, air conditioning and journey information. Feedback will help shape the specification before manufacturers are invited to bid for the £90 million fleet. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said the project represented a "once-in-a-genera-

tion opportunity" to create a tram network fit for the future. "The trams have been part of our lives for more than 30 years, helping us get to work, school, appointments and days out," he said. "They've served South Yorkshire brilliantly, but it's now time to invest in a new fleet that is accessible, comfortable, reliable and built around the needs of passengers." Residents will also be able to attend public exhibitions showcasing design concepts and creative mock-ups of the proposed trams. Events will take place at Riverside House in Rotherham on Tuesday, August 11, and at the Workstation in Sheffield on Wednesday, August 12, with both venues open from 11am to 2pm and 3pm to 6pm. Online information sessions will also be held on Tuesday, August 18. Paper copies of the consultation will be available from Sheffield Interchange, Meadowhall Interchange and Sheffield Railway Station from August 10. Stocksbridge road sign leaves drivers scratching their heads

Drivers heading into Stocksbridge may be forgiven for wondering if they have taken a wrong turn – after an error on a road sign has left local residents amused.

One local joked that after years of navigating around potholes, drivers could now add navigating incorrect directions to their list of challenges.

The sign, which directs traffic towards the town, appears to contain an error, prompting a few raised eyebrows from motorists who know their way around the area.

The error has also prompted the inevitable question from residents – if the roads are proving difficult enough to navigate already, do we really need the signs joining in?

While most road signs are designed to make life easier for drivers, this one seems to have created a little more confusion than it intended.

Of course, mistakes happen, and the sign may simply be awaiting correction. But for now, it has provided a little unintended entertainment for those travelling into Stocksbridge.

Responsibility for traffic signs on Sheffield’s roads generally sits with Sheffield City Council, with highway maintenance delivered through the city’s Streets Ahead programme.

With one local summing up the mood rather neatly: after potholes, roadworks and diversions, “what next?”

And with motorists already regularly voicing their frustrations about potholes and the condition of some local roads, the sign has provided another talking point.

Six-year hunt ends as police uncover missing man's body hidden in concrete-filled barrel ...Continued from front page

A post-mortem examination confirmed the remains were those of Mr Dyson, who had been shot with a shotgun before his body was dismembered, placed inside the barrel and encased in concrete in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime forever. Mr Dyson, 55, vanished after returning to Parkside Cottage on Sheffield Road, where he had been living in his car while carrying out odd jobs on Wright's farm. He was last seen alive on November 17, 2019, and was reported missing after failing to meet his daughter, Bethany – something detectives described as completely out of character.

The discovery led to the arrests of Wright, 73, and Schwalbe, 72.

Last week, Sheffield Crown Court heard Wright had murdered Mr Dyson before hiding his body in the trailer, which was then taken to the nearby farm where it remained undiscovered for almost six years. Wright was sentenced to 35 years in prison for murder, while Schwalbe was jailed for three years for perverting the course of justice after helping Although extensive searches were carried out cover up the crime. and officers were convinced foul play was involved, they were unable to prove murder During renewed searches of Wright's properwithout finding Mr Dyson's body. LOCAL HISTORY UNEARTHED

A Fox’s Falling Out: Quality v Quantity by Steve Moxon From earliest days, the products Samuel Fox developed entailed upper grades of steel, and from 1858 they were made on-site instead of bought in. Local brick-makers/-layers constructed a large – 48-melt-hole – crucible steel furnace; the type capable of producing the very highest grade steel (as the one surviving at Grenoside: see LL, July 16). So who brought the necessary melting skills to Stocksbridge? A story in Grenoside was that Samuel Fox got the know-how himself, lodging at Top Furnace with the Tingle family. He was never there. According to Fox’s senior early employee Joseph Sheldon (in his 1922 book, The Founders and Builders of Stocksbridge Works), it was a George Inch from Sheffield. Hinch, actually, who, in the 1871 census, is a “furnace man”, 35, of Bolsterstone (meaning Stocksbridge west of the river), with his local-born new (1868) wife Hannah (nee Gillott). He appears to be missing from the 1861 Census (as lots of folk were), though turns up in 1841, aged seven, at Brightside Lane, Attercliffe Works – the Huntsman family’s crucible steel operation (Benjamin Huntsman being its inventor). No sooner had this finicky super-steel production transferred to Fox’s than Samuel added its opposite: bulk crude steel-making. In 1862 Fox became, bar one, the first licensee of the Bessemer process, to manufacture steel at scale, albeit poorly controlled for carbon content, with impurities (principally phosphorus), and pretty brittle. Good enough for rails, he could supply the colossal railway boom and gain a fortune. But Fox’s reputation was for top-quality steel goods. Samuel’s wife Maria thought this would be threatened. Now Maria, to all intents and purposes, was Samuel’s business partner, of twenty years’ standing. Hard-working (from 6am), regarded as extremely able, she had a crucial role in charge of accounts and wages. Sheldon wrote: “Mrs Fox did not favour the plant; she said it would mean the ruin of all that had been accomplished”.

They seem to be what cropped up for bargain sale, where the new owner might play ‘squire’, and, way beyond a commute, put the steel concern out of mind. [Was North Cliffe a bolt-hole for when all went belly-up or Samuel, too old to run the works, could avoid temptation to keep a hand on the tiller?]

Meanwhile back at t’mill, the amount of steel disgorged by the Bessemer converters exploded, while product lines that, like springs, required top-notch steel, continued as before. So Maria’s fears weren’t realised. Quality and quantity could co-exist, and did so for a long period. Bessemer melting began in 1863 with twin three-ton capacity converters. Refinements boosted output from five to twelve tons per shift. From 1870, replacement five-ton No mincing words. A major rift ensued. Ma- jobs drove this to 30 tons. SHEFFIELD RACING DRIVER ENJOYING CHAMPIONSHIP FOLLOWING SILVERSTONE SUCCESS

Photos by Jakob Ebrey

By Andrew McMath Since our last chat with Rowan Campbell-Pilling, his racing career has gone from strength to strength. This year marked the Sheffield racing driver’s first season in the GB3 Championship moving up from Formula 4. Starting in April, this year’s Championship has seen Rowan and his team at XCEL Motorsport take on courses both here in the UK and on the continent. His maiden race at the level came at Silverstone before moving on to the Circuit De Spa Francorchamps (Belgium), Hungaroring (Hungary), Red Bull Ring (Austria) and back most recently at Silverstone again. His performances across the five race events has seen Rowan in seventh in the standings. The most recent outing at Silverstone saw him have two podium finishes, earning second and third place in race one and two respectively. On his Silverstone success, Rowan said: “The pace has been coming all year and if you look at the trajectory we’ve been on it fits in line with that. “We’ve gone away on our Europe road trip, we’ve been to Hungary, Spa, Austria. Certainly in Hungary and Austria which is a double header at the Hungaroring and Red Bull Ring. Hungary was really strong. We didn’t initially go there and we weren’t quite on the pace to start with. In the races we really struggled just through lack of experience and experiencing things that I hadn’t dealt with before and had to manage before like tire degradation to a completely whole other level to what I’ve experienced in F4 before. “Coming to Silverstone with what we’ve learned previously and really executing and learning from the mistakes and turning them around and using them to our advantage. That’s exactly what we did. We went into Silverstone, we were on pace from day one. Then we executed a P2 and a P5 in qualifying and then to convert those qualifying performances into three really strong results was a great weekend.”

These strong recent finishes has Rowan looking forward to the three remaining race events which will play out at Britain’s Donington Park and Brands Hatch race courses before finishing the Championship in Barcelona. Rowan spoke particularly fondly of Donington Park, which is just over an hour away from Sheffield by car, as he hopes for a strong following from friends and family to the slightly nearer venue. He said: “It will be great to have so much home support there. I’m really looking forward to that and Donington’s a track we’ve typically done really well at. It’s a track that I really like. “If we can have the level of success we’ve had at Silverstone, at Donington, in front of a huge home crowd that’ll be even more amazing.” Whilst, Rowan has translated his previous Formula 4 success into the GB3 Championship, it’s worth noting the differences between the two levels. Rowan used Silverstone’s iconic Copse corner to highlight the change in speed. He said: “If we say Copse at Silverstone which is a flat-out righthander in Formula 1. In our cars in GB3, it’s a small lift and you’re going through there probably at about 140 to 150 mph. In an F4 car, you’re going through around 110 to 120. So, it’s still fast, but you know, the level is a big jump. Like you look at an F4 car’s top speed at about 140. That’s about as fast as you’ll go in a straight line. “So, if you think that you’re doing what you were doing last year round a corner? You know, that’s a big jump for not only your mind because everything’s moving a lot faster around you, but physically, you know, you’ve got to be a lot stronger. Your neck’s got to hold on and you’re doing that lap after lap after lap for a longer distance than an F4 race as well. So, you’ve got to be much fitter. It’s a big jump physically and mentally.” As part of the newer physical and mental strength requirements, Rowan admitted that much of his preparation time is spent out of the car swapping the race track for the gym.

He said: “The downside of being a racing driver is that you don’t get to do that much racing driving. You spend an awful lot more time in the gym, on the simulator, all that sort of thing doing preparation because you don’t get to spend that much time actually physically driving cars. So, you’ve got to do everything in your power behind the scenes and when you do get to drive that car you maximize it and execute it as quickly and as best you possibly can. “On an average day, I’ll get up in the morning, I’ll go train straight away. You want to get up, get on with your day, get your blood flowing sort of thing. So, there’s no better way to do that in the gym or so I’m told. I would beg to differ, but apparently it’s good for you to start your day off training. So, that’s what we do.” Long before the podium finishes and trips to far off race tracks, Rowan’s journey started off in, at the time of writing, sunny Sheffield. Even with all his achievements, the racing driver is immensely proud to call it his home city. A pride that can be seen in how Rowan went from effortlessly answering questions about how best to tackle the most challenging bends in motorsport. To being initially lost for words when describing his beloved Steel City. He said: “I don’t think I have a word in my vocabulary to express how important Sheffield is to me. I’m so proud to be born and bred in Sheffield and to fly the flag for Sheffield and South Yorkshire at the level we do and at the level we want to in future. Sheffield is such an amazing place. It’s a big village. Everyone knows everyone. The amount of support and connection we’ve had from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, whether that’s on a personal level, on a business level, whatever. I can’t thank everyone involved enough.” Make sure to keep updated on Rowan’s journey, his next race event at Donington Park is scheduled for the fifth and sixth of September.

TIGERS STATEMENT WIN Sheffield secured a dominant 57-33 home victory over Premiership Knockout Cup winners Leicester on Thursday, moving within one point of the play-off places. Following a recent large win against Northampton, the Tigers started strongly with seven straight heat advantages to build a 32-10 lead. Although Leicester claimed two late 5-1 advantages—one via tactical substitute Ryan Douglas in Heat 12 and another after a heavy Heat 15 crash by Tigers captain Josh Pickering—Sheffield mathematically sealed the win with four races to spare.

Tigers team boss Simon Stead praised the solid performance, highlighting the bounce-back from the reserves after a disappointment at King’s Lynn, and thanked guest Jason Doyle for his fantastic job. Stead added that Pickering would need his injury

assessed. Key performances included Leon Flint scoring a full four-ride maximum, Pickering extending his double-figure home run to seven meetings, and valuable points from Doyle, Anders Rowe, Chris Holder, Jye Etheridge, and Luke Killeen.

The Tigers travel to Leicester next Thursday, August 13 (7.30pm), before hosting King’s Lynn on Monday, August 17 (7.30pm). SHEFFIELD 57: Leon Flint 12, Josh Pickering 10, Jason Doyle 9+1, Chris Holder 7+2, Jye Etheridge 7+1, Anders Rowe 7, Luke Killeen 5+2. LEICESTER 33: Ryan Douglas 11, Nick Morris 8+2, Drew Kemp 4, Joe Thompson 3+1, Dan Thompson 3, Sam Masters 3, William Cairns 1.

Time trial triumph BRISCOE Five-year-old George CONQUERS for Caroline! celebrates 50 junior parkruns GRUELLING ULTRA

IN EXCESSIVE HEAT

There was a special reason for celebrating at Olympic Legacy Park on Sunday as High Green Harriers gathered to mark a remarkable milestone for one of their youngest runners. Five-year-old George, son of Louise and Richard, completed his 50th junior parkrun at the Attercliffe event – an impressive achievement at such a young age. George has grown up around parkrun, with both his parents keen runners. After regularly accompanying them to events, he has now taken to running himself and has become a familiar face at the weekly junior parkrun. His milestone was met with plenty of pride from everyone at High Green Harriers, who were delighted to see him receive his special 50-run milestone bracelet.

George celebrated the achievement in suitably five-year-old fashion – with a chunky KitKat.

Despite his young age, George already appears Wednesday night saw the finals in the popular to have picked up one of the key messages of Valley Hill Runners’ time trials series. Penistone runner Damien Briscoe, competing for Holmfirth Harriers, completed the gruelling North Downs Way 100 on his first attempt. He finished the 103-mile ultramarathon—featuring 11,000 feet of climbing from Farnham to Ashford—in an official time of 27-36-08. This placed him 91st overall, 82nd male, and 24th in the men’s over-40 category. Briscoe’s personal GPS logged 106.41 miles and 11,119 feet of ascent, with a running time of 22 hours 38 minutes. ‘100 HOLES IN A DAY’ Local golfer Jacob Nightingale has raised more than £1,500 for Asthma and Lung UK after completing a 100-hole golf challenge at Stocksbridge Golf Club on 7 August.

Jacob decided to take on the challenge in memory of his grandad, who sadly passed away from bronchitis last year. He wanted to raise money for a cause that was personally meaningful to him while doing something he enjoys. The challenge involved playing 100 holes of golf in one day, with support from friends, family and members of the local community throughout the fundraiser. Jacob said: “I wanted to do something in memory of my grandad and hopefully raise some money for a charity that does important work. I’m really grateful to everyone who donated and supported the fundraiser. To have raised more than £1,500 is something I’m really pleased with.” The money raised will go towards Asthma + Lung UK, a charity dedicated to supporting people affected by lung conditions across the UK. The charity provides information, advice and support to people living with conditions such as asthma, COPD and lung cancer, while also funding research aimed at better treatments and ultimately finding cures. It also campaigns for cleaner air and improved respiratory health. For Jacob, raising money for the charity was a way of turning a personal loss into something positive and helping support other people and families affected by lung disease.

STEELS LOSE SEASON OPENER TAYLOR-MADE HEATON STANNINGTON 2 - 0 STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS

Stocksbridge Park Steels fell to their first opening day defeat since 2018 after losing 2-0 to Heaton Stannington.

STOCKSBRIDGE RESULT

The Steels resisted some early pressure and would have the best of the first half chances. Louie Ward fired over after a ball fell kindly in the box. He then went one-on-one with the goalkeeper only to be denied by a outstretched leg. Charlie Oglesby came close as well as his diving header went wide. Heaton had their own chances, but the game would be goalless at half time. In the second half, Heaton Stannington started off the better team and got their reward. Stocksbridge initially cleared a corner only for an umarked Cameron Gascoigne to find the bottom corner.

Stocksbridge 1st XI 206-7 (Rob Taylor 71, Jake Vickers 35*, Joe Goddard 31)

Sheffield University Staff 1st XI 190-9 (Rob Taylor 4-66, Joe HibThis appeared to rattle Stocksbridge bert 3-46) and smelling blood, Heaton pushed The 1st XI welcomed Uni Staff forward for more. Stocksbridge struggled to make many opportunities after this, though substitute Reece Clegg was able to turn his man and fire one wide. It would be a loss on opening day for Stocksbridge.

The Green Army didn’t get off to the start they had planned though as it took just 4 balls for Uni Staff to claim their first wicket. One quickly became three and Stocksbridge were in a spot of trouble at Steels face Ashington on Saturday 15 19-3. Rob Taylor strolled to the August at Bracken Moor for their first crease and him and Joe Goddard started to turn the tide as the pair home league match of the season. battled well and shared a 58 run partnership before Goddard fell for 31. Harry Hurst joined Taylor and the pair continued the good work rotating the strike well and helping set Stocksbridge a platform. Taylor raised his bat for an excellent half century then decided to hit the accelerator. A flurry of boundaries came including a lovely straight 6 and just as Taylor was looking set to go big he was caught on the boundary for a superb 71. Parag Tawade on first team debut and skipper Jake Vickers dug deep and after a tough start the runs started to flow. The pair were quickly scoring at over a run a ball and boundaries were now coming as the pair shared a 61 run partnership in the last 7 overs to help the Green Army surpass the 200 mark. The innings ended with Tawade unbeaten on 26 and Vickers unbeaten on 35 as Stocksbridge posted 206-7 from their allotted overs.

CHURCH DEFEATED IN FA CUP LIVERSEDGE 4 - 1 PENISTONE CHURCH

Penistone Church travelled to Liversedge for an FA Cup clash over the weekend. Church initially took the lead through Lennon O’Grady, whose goal seemed to alert Church’s opponents into action. Liversedge didn’t slow down once they got going winning the tie 4-1. Penistone Church manager Brett Lovell spoke after the game: “I’m ultra proud of the club today, the players and their application, we couldn’t have got a tougher draw. “We had seven first-team lads unavailable. The lads who have deputised have come in and not let the club down. “They are a talented side and they’ll do excellent in that league.” Church face Stockport Georgians away from home on Saturday in the FA Vase.

With over 200 on the board Stocksbridge felt confident of defending the total but this would be no formality as Uni Staff were up at the top end of table and were also setting sights on victory. Opening bowlers Jake Vickers and Joe Taylor went wicketless but remained economical in what was now set up to be a good contest. A change of pace brought about the first wicket at Rob Taylor took little time to strike thanks to an excellent diving catch from Joe Goddard in the deep. Just as Uni Staff looked to have a partnership building Taylor struck with two wickets in two balls to make it 75-

3. Parag Tawade wasn’t content with just his batting contribution as he then grabbed himself to a run out too. Hibbert grabbed an important wicket of the dangerous Mandal thanks to another fantastic catch. This time by Harry Hurst who had been exceptional in the field throughout. With 36 needed off 6 it was anyone’s game. As Taylor had finished his allotted overs taking 4-66, Vickers came back into the attack as he and Hibbert looked to see the game out for the Green Army. The pair were extremely tight and the required run rate was increasing rapidly. After that victory the Green Army remain top of league and travel to Treeton next week looking to maintain that position. Stocksbridge 1st XI 115 all out (Joe Goddard 31, Steve Perry 24) Sheffield Centralians 1st XI 1164 (Joe Hibbert 2-18, Joe Goddard 1-7, Jake Vickers 1-17) With a spot in the cup final on the line, Stocksbridge hosted Sheffield Centralians and elected to bat first. The innings started aggressively, but the momentum shifted when Mehmood removed Oliver Warren. Joe Goddard anchored the top order with a classy 31, yet the innings unraveled once he fell. Following a brief resistance from Jack Murfin and Rob Taylor, the side suffered a collapse, slipping to 82-6. Despite a determined 24 from Steve Perry, the lower order couldn’t withstand the pressure, and the team was bowled out for a disappointing 115. Defending this modest total, Stocksbridge mounted a spirited start. Jake Vickers was economical, taking an early wicket with a catch by Liam Grayson, while Joe Hibbert shifted the momentum by claiming two quick LBW wickets. At 37-3, the hosts sensed a real chance to defend their score. However, Sheffield Centralians weathered the storm, with Ikrar Khan playing a crucial role by capitalising on loose deliveries. Despite a late wicket from Joe Goddard and disciplined spells from the bowling attack, the visitors remained composed. They eventually chased down the target, handing Stocksbridge a 6-wicket defeat and ending their cup run.
