PLANS FOR MEDICAL CENTRE PLANS have been submitted to Sheffield City Council to deliver major improvements to the Valley Medical Centre in Stocksbridge. The building on Johnson Street in Stocksbridge has been purchased by Dransfield Properties Ltd, the company which owns Fox Valley. The company has now submitted plans to make a number of improvements to create more space for staff and patients at the centre working with Sheffield architects Dixon Dawson who designed Fox Valley. Under the new plans the existing building will undergo an external facelift to improve the look of the centre. A new extension will also create an attractive new entrance area and lobby and the waiting room will be upgraded. Further improvements are also planned to re-configure the internal areas making more efficient use of the Valley Medical Centre’s space. The planning application for the improvements to Valley Medical Centre has been submitted to Sheffield City Council and once approved the work will start later in the autumn. Police - “Help us find who killed Pat 20 years ago” THIS week marks the 20th anniversary of the murder of Pat Grainger in Sheffield. On 10 August 1997, her body was found in a brook close to her home in Parson Cross. No one has ever been convicted of the crime. However, the case is still open and Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector David Stopford, is appealing for new information. He said: “Pat’s family, and in particular her son Daniel, have never stopped fighting for justice. They desperately need to know what happened to her in 1997. Together, we hope that this 20th anniversary will jog people’s memories.

“It’s very important everyone knows that the case is still open and that we still want members of the public to come forward with information. You might remember something that was said years ago, or something that you saw. Even if it feels trivial or insignificant, please tell us. It might be important.” Pat’s body was found in a brook behind Deerlands Avenue in Parson Cross. She had been sexually assaulted, stabbed and strangled. When she was last seen, on 9 August 1997, she was wearing a dark sweater, a black skirt and white trainers. The last sighting of Pat was on Addlington Road

in Parson Cross, at 6.30pm on that evening. DCI Stopford added: “Our mobile police station is in Parson Cross today and our officers and PCSOs are out and about talking to people about what they remember from the time. We are also putting up fresh appeal posters in the area, to remind people that the case is still very much active. “But our renewed appeal is about more than one day of activity. The case will remain open, so I am encouraging you to call 101 or email us at enquiries@ southyorks.pnn.police.uk. You can also report information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”

Police drop-in at Lidl

LOCAL PCSOs from South Yorkshire Police’s North West Local Policing Team will be at the Lidl on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge for crime reduction and general advice on Thursday from 10am to 12pm.

20 years unsolved: Pat Grainger with son Daniel, who hasn’t given up the hunt for justice.

Two vehicles were set on fire around 11.15pm on Sunday at Bitholmes Gate and enquiries are ongoing. If you have any information about this crime then please call 101.

INTRODUCTING THE LATEST FOLDING TRANSPORTABLE FOLDING CHAIR

THE Old Rolling Pin at Fox Valley played host to the second of many proposed friendship lunches, promoted largely by Home Instead Senior Care Sheffield, the organisation which majors in home care and social inclusion. Kathy Markwick, a Deepcar resident and the Community Development Officer for Home Instead Senior Care Sheffield, has been paramount in raising awareness of these Friendship Lunches which are held in Sheffield and Barnsley, to help people who would not normally venture out for a meal.

Home Instead Senior Care help people remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible and major in home care and social inclusion.

vided by Lou Marriott, a singer musician from High Green, who has a wide range of songs that everyone could choose from and he delivered with aplomb.

Their oldest client, Kay, who has just celebrated her 107th Birthday recently attended the first birthday of the Friendship Lunch at The Crosspool Tavern.

Stocksbridge Mayor, Keith Davis, and Deputy Mayor, Julie Grocutt, both attended and supported the event.

The idea is to provide a friendly atmosphere where people can enjoy a reasonably priced meal, meet new friends and enjoy some entertainment. The entertainment on this occasion was pro-

Keith said: “There are nearly 1,100 people of retirement age who live alone in the Stocksbridge ward, some may not be able to attend these lunches unless we can find people who are prepared to help them and that is where Kathy and her team come in.”

We are all very grateful to Jennifer Chadburn and Tracey Baines for their initiative to provide an event for elderly, lonely and socially isolated people in the Stocksbridge and Deepcar area. The next lunch is on Thursday September 7 from 12 noon to 2pm. The cost is £6 and includes a two-course meal and live entertainment with the sensational Lou Marriott. Fire crews carry out major rail incident training exercise SOUTH Yorkshire’s fire crews have taken part in a dramatic steam train themed training exercise to test their response to an incident at Heritage railway. Exercise Thomas was simulated to test the work that the Elsecar Heritage Railway train guard, rail incident officer and other crew members would carry out in the event of a major incident. It specifically focused on the station’s procedures for contacting the emergency services and for dealing with an incident prior to and during the arrival of the fire service. The exercise involved a car that had crossed the railway line at Elsecar station and had been struck by a moving train.

Firefighters practice railway rescues at Elsecar heritage centre

Two heavy rescue pumps from Tankersley and Adwick stations were involved in the exercise. Crews from Tankersley white watch and Adwick red watch worked together to remove a number of casualties from the train, including a 27 stone training dummy to simulate a bariatric rescue. Personnel from Cudworth station red watch also

performed rescues from the car and assisted with the hour long scenario. A number of trainee forward liaison officers from Barnsley District Council attended the exercise and have requested to be involved in other similar training exercises. Andrew Littlewood, Trustee at Heritage Railway said: “We are always happy to work in conjunction with our emergency services. We trust that South Yorkshire Fire Service benefitted from the experience.” Delroy Galloway, station manager at Tankersley fire station, said: “The exercise was a huge success and allowed all those who participated to further understand their roles and responsibilities in the event of a major incident. “Exercise Thomas formed part of an ongoing aim to continually improve major emergency response procedures and i would like to thank everyone who took part.” Elsecar Heritage Railway runs steam hauled trains and diesel locomotives for members of the public on a regular basis.

Inaugural art festival a success

SATURDAY August 12 was a great day at the Stocksbridge Christian Centre - a Methodist and Anglican Church on Cedar Road. It was the day of the first Whitwell Arts Festival where members of the community brought paintings, sketches, crocheted and embroidered work, carvings, photographs and many other kinds of art and craftwork for friends and neighbours to enjoy. All generations of the community were involved with two dedicated display tables of work done by students from Stocksbridge Junior School. Opened officially at 11 in the morning by the Mayor of Stocksbridge Keith Davis, with Deputy Mayor Julie Grocutt in attendance, just under 100 people attended during the course of the day. There was a display of work by Steve Lake including his ‘Return of the Parable of the Prodigal Son’ based on the parable of Jesus. This was gifted to the church and dedicated in the Sunday service on August 13. Revd James Grayson told Look Local: “Since the festival proved to be so successful, I hope that it will become an annual community event.”

The Google bus will be parked by the market area at Fox Valley.

Your Letters Hacked off I have followed the story about the changes to the 57 service. I discovered another service change the other night when coming home after a night out in Sheffield. I took the Tram to Middlewood (had to wait as one was out of service). I then waited a few minutes for the SL to arrive which it duly did. I was then astonished to discover that at least some of them now go via Hillsborough, that's right the same place I had passed through on the tram about 10 minutes before. I would love someone to explain the logic of a service designed to link The Valley and Middlewood going in the opposite direction before coming back to where it started from. Regarding Steve Moxon‘s rant about the 57 in last week’s Look Local. I am old enough to remember the 57 running straight up the main road and visiting Garden Village both ways and it terminating at Bridge Street.

Dear 'fed up resident'

I write as a parent of children at Windmill Hill school in response to your letter last week, and whilst I sympathise because you shouldn't have to put up with people blocking your drive, I wonder if you read the whole article that Look Local published about us and the money that parents from the school raised, donated on the ask of the school, and let the frustrated children choose how As for the tram link bus I despair of how this service to spend in an effort to improve road safety around has deteriorated since coming into being. our school. when the major road works had to be carried out. The tram must be the most popular ‘white elephant’ in the world. My complaint is that unlike Manchester it is not being expanded fast enough. Try using it at tea time, packed. In an evening the 57, when it gets to Stocksbridge is close on empty, not so the tramlink buses. If you are going into town you do not have to think what times the next 57? There is a tramlink bus every 10 minutes. Having said that, it took seven years to get a two way tramlink bus. SYPTA were against it, I've been told. What must happen now is to ensure that the tramlink bus routes are altered to cover the 57 route, and push to get the tram to Stocksbridge.

If you have comments or complaint about the bus service, go to the meetings in the library. I do. NEW MUSICAL THEATRE ACADEMY TO LAUNCH IN NORTH SHEFFIELD A PERFORMING arts school for children is expanding with a new academy for young people interested in musical theatre.

Noodle Performance Arts is launching NPA Academy, which will teach theatre dance, drama and singing to children aged five and over. The new sessions will start in September and are aimed at young people who love performing and want to develop their skills further. As well as it’s NPA Academy classes, Noodle Performance Arts will also be launching its award-winning tots classes, ballet classes and performing arts classes in Stocksbridge, High Green and other areas of North Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham. These classes focus on youngsters having fun in a relaxed and informal environment. Nikki Johnson, Noodle Performance Art’s managing director

and founder of NPA Academy, said: “Although our NPA Academy classes will still be fun and enjoyable, they will offer more in-depth training to children who want to take their talent to the next level. They are ideal for young people who want to gain more performing experience and are perhaps looking at acting, dancing or singing as a potential career when they are older.”

The first NPA Academy session will take place on Saturday September 9 at Christ Church Community Hall, Stocksbridge. The two-hour class will start at 12pm and will cost £11 a week. Nikki said: “One of our key aims in setting up NPA Academy was to offer classes which give young people a thorough grounding in musical theatre but are still affordable. We know it can be challenging for parents to find the money for traditional theatre

schools so we wanted to offer exceptional performing arts training at a competitive price.” The classes are suitable for children aged 5 to 16. Pupils will spend one hour a week learning theatre dance and another hour concentrating on drama and singing. There will be termly topics to challenge the children and help them hone their skills. As well as learning scripts, musical numbers and dance routines, they will take part in improvisation exercises and given regular opportunities to perform. To find out more about the classes or to book a place for your child, call Carla on 07796 775425 or email carla@noodleperformancearts.com For more details about NPA Academy or Noodle Performance

School for north Sheffield - plans approved SHEFFIELD City Council has given planning permission for Astrea Academy to be built in Woodside in the North East of the city, with building due to start this summer.

The new school will incorporate the existing Grade 2 listed former Pye Bank Board School building. Kier Construction will be working with architect, Race Cottam Associate’s to carry out the work and the school will open in September 2018. It will

be run by Astrea Academy, who will be running events with parents and the local community in September to talk more about their plans. Libby Nicholas from Astrea Academy, who will run the new school, said: “We are delighted that

planning permission has been granted - the Astrea Academy Sheffield will be a beacon school, helping transform the local area and providing an education that inspires beyond measure.”

Parents urge others to register for 30 hours free childcare as deadline approaches FAMILIES are set to benefit enormously from the new 30 free hours of childcare scheme, as parents urge others to apply before the deadline on August 31 2017. Parents of three and four-year-olds, and disadvantaged two-year-olds, can currently receive 15 hours of free childcare per week, but the Government will soon double this allowance for some three and four-year-olds. Thanks to this scheme, parents such as Stefan and Faith will be able to benefit from more quality time

with their families, as well as huge financial savings. Faith Nicholson, 29, from Hillsborough, mum to Alfred, age three, said: “It will be life changing. At the moment I work 45 to 50 hours a week as a restaurant manager to pay for my son’s three days at nursery. Working such long hours means that is hard to find the time to spend time with my son. Thirty free hours of childcare means that I will be able to significantly cut back on my working hours and am able to spend some quality time with my family.”

#ActivePlaces

Operated by Places for People Leisure Ltd. in partnership with Sheffield City Council

From September 2017, if parents work at least 16 hours a week, they could get up to 30 hours of free childcare per week. To access the additional hours – for the term beginning this September – they must apply before the end of August. The scheme aims to support children’s development, ensure children are ready for school and help parents manage childcare costs and working patterns. Research by the Department for Education shows that good quality early education has lasting posi-

tive effects on children by helping their speech and language development; literacy and numeracy; social development; and readiness for school. The research also shows that the effect of attending any pre-school is the equivalent to achieving seven higher grades at GCSE and it is especially beneficial for the most disadvantaged children. To check eligibility and to apply for 30 hours free childcare, please visit www.gov.uk/government/ publications/30-hours-free-childcare-eligibility.

Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

MISSING CAT

Small, black, Oriental / Siamese cat with green eyes. Has a green camouflage collar (may have been removed). Last seen in Greenmoor area. Reward for his safe return. Microchipped.

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Tigers continue to roar SHEFFIELD Tigers marched to their eighth straight win with a hard-fought 49-41 success at Redcar. The Window Centre Tigers continued their magnificent form to move eight points clear at the top of the SGB Championship table with a big four point haul in Teesside. Unbeaten top two Richard Lawson and Kyle Howarth struck decisive 5-1s in heats 13 and 15, whilst Josh Bates claimed crucial wins in heats 12 and 14 to ensure they snatched victory in the closing stages. It was another superb evening for the high-flying Owlerton

outfit – and young gun Bates was delighted to help them over the line in a tense affair. Said Bates: “It’s great to come away with four points, and it was a really good team effort. “I’d just like to thank Todd Kurtz for lending me his bike in my last two rides, because I had some clutch problems earlier in the night. “It was good to help us get the win and keep our run going, and now we’re all just focused on one thing which is bringing some silverware to Sheffield.” Kurtz chipped in with a useful five points, whilst Jan Graversen

won heat two before struggling in the remainder of the meeting. And although Georgie Wood experienced a tough night at reserve, the Tigers just had enough to extend their fine run of form. They will be back in action at home to Newcastle on Thursday (7.30). REDCAR 41: Charles Wright 9, Jason Garrity 8+1, Ben Barker 8, Danny Ayres 6+4, Ellis Perks 6+3, Tobias Busch 4, Jonas B Andersen r/r. SHEFFIELD 49: Kyle Howarth 15+3, Richard Lawson 15, Josh Bates 11, Todd Kurtz 5, Jan Graversen 3, Georgie Wood 0, Lasse Bjerre r/r.

Stocksbridge prepare for new season with win Hope Valley 27-40 Stocksbridge Rugby STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby got the new season off to a great start with an away win over the hills in a friendly against Hope Valley. Hope started well as expected playing down the slope and got an early try which rattled Stocks, a good spell of defensive work followed with flankers Danny Burrows and Tom Spencer causing Hope some problems. The work paid off with a good move through the centres with a final pass to Liam Dyson to score and the extras were added by Adam Frith which got the Pigs into the lead. Taking the foot off the gas after let Hope score two more tries to lead 15-7 at half time. Fired up after a talk, the visitors started the second half flying with a try from Reece Keenan with a storming run. Two more well-worked moves re-

sulted in tries from Chris Wood and Adam Frith Which left Stocksbridge leading 26-15. Then followed a 10 minute lapse of concentration which let Hope come back, crashing over twice with a conversion which made the score 27-26 to Hope. A bit of a calm was required and with 10 minutes to go Stocksbridge upped there game again and with some excellent runs down the wing from Liam Dyson and some good phases of play two more tries from Pete Newton and Ricki Christopherson both converted by Adam Frith gave the Pigs the win. It was a great effort also from two new players to the team, David Dutch Bowen and Cameron Junior Hizam. Stocksbridge Rugby entertain Hope Valley this week at Coal Pit Lane in the rematch. Kick off is at 3pm.
