The report – which has been welcomed by local MP Angela Smith and by local businesses and charities – shows how tens of thousands of local residents have benefited in recent years from proper insulation and efficient boilers, making their homes more affordable to heat and safer to live in. But the report goes on to identify the huge untapped potential for delivering to the remaining Penistone and Stocksbridge residents the benefits their neighbours have already seen, with almost 7,000 homes having the worst energy ratings and likely to be in urgent need of attention. Households in Penistone and Stocksbridge have to spend a staggering £51 million on their fuel bills each year. Over recent years national schemes – working hand in hand with dedicated local businesses and charities – have helped offset

this by insulating 9,100 lofts and 6,200 cavity walls, while 11,300 efficient boilers have been installed. This has benefited local people in a whole range of ways – combating the health problems associated with cold homes, creating skilled local jobs and diverting money previously spent on fuel bills into local shops and businesses. But much more remains to be done, the report says. Changes to national efficiency schemes have meant that funding to help poorer households is harder to get hold of. Meanwhile, close to two thirds of homes in Penistone and Stocksbridge still need to be improved to bring them up to the level of a home built today. The release of this report has been timed to coincide with the launch of environmental charity Hubbub’s fuel poverty project “Fuelling Connections and has been sponsored by Calor. Hubbub’s kick-off roundtable event took place on Friday January 13 in Stocksbridge and brought together key stakeholders in fuel poverty and Angela Smith MP to discuss what has worked to date and what remains to be done.

Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith commented: “I know that fuel poverty is a significant issue in Yorkshire and that many of my constituents will be concerned about the cost of heating their homes this winter. “I welcome the report by the Association for the Conservation of Energy, which sheds light on the energy efficiency of the housing stock and businesses across the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency and commend the work that local installers and programme managers have done in recent years to implement energy saving features in homes, such as better insulation and more efficient boilers. This report does however demonstrate the need for a long term energy efficiency policy to tackle these issues. Paul Blacklock, Head of Corporate Affairs from Calor, said: “This excellent report highlights the opportunities for people living off the gas grid in the area to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. However, due to the inherently flawed design of Government support programmes it is much harder for them to access any financial support.

Peak District National Park is nominated for National Park of the Year THE Peak District National Park, has been nominated as National Park of the Year in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2017. The annual awards celebrate the British countryside and its people, from great heritage attractions and favourite holiday destinations to the best nature reserves and the finest rural pubs.

Nominees for the National Park of the Year award have been chosen by TV presenter John Craven. The Peak District National Park is up against Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, Yorkshire Dales, South Downs and Snowdonia national parks. Peak District National Park chief executive Sarah Fowler said: “We’re

delighted to have been nominated for National Park of the Year. As Britain’s original national park the landscape is not only incredibly beautiful and fantastic for wildlife, it’s the place to call home to 38,000 residents, it provides the work space of farmers and many other businesses, and it’s enjoyed by millions of visitors every year. I hope

the public will show their support and vote for us.” The Peak District National Park was designated on 17 April, 1951, and is one of 15 national parks in Britain. Countryfile magazine editor Fergus Collins said: “The awards provide a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the best of the British countryside. Our experts have

nominated a range of exceptional contenders and I look forward to hearing our readers’ views and discovering which nominees prove the popular favourites.” Voting for this year’s awards opens online on January 19, and runs to February 28, at www.countryfile. com/awards The winners will be announced in March.

DANCE SCHOOL IN THE PINK FOR CHARITY

AFTER a fabulous sponsored dance-a-thon for The Big Pink in October last year, Justdance Studios have managed to raise a whopping £2,172.50 for the cause close to their hearts! It’s the second time the dancers have raised money for their chosen charity and are very pleased with the result. They would like to thank all their students who took part, their families for their support and to everyone who donated prizes and gifts to their raffle and tombola stall. It was a very successful and fun evening where students of all ages danced non stop for one hour in support of The Big Pink, a huge fundraising effort for Breast Cancer Care. Breast Cancer Care is the only UK-wide charity providing care, information and support to people affected by breast cancer. It was founded by Betty Westgate on Christmas Eve, 1973, five years after her own diagnosis of breast cancer in 1968.

MAGIC: The cast of Thurgoland Thespians’ Aladdin. IN a dramatic tale straight from a Thurgoland Thespians pantomime, a magic lantern previously containing one very ‘condensed’ Genie has been found in the secret caves of Scout Dyke. And in a bizarre twist of fate, the expedition that set out to find the lamp months earlier from thousands of miles away in Peking, had to return back to the nearby village of Oxspring to rescue the priceless antique. This was after the Princess of Peking was duped by a local villain in to giving it away in a ‘new for old’ lamp exchange scam. Aladdin Twanky, finder of the artefact and oldest son of Widow Twanky, said: “Obviously we were elated to find the lamp along with thousands of pounds of other jewels as it was the answer to all our prayers. “I was now rich enough to buy my own palace and could marry the Princess Jasmin whilst my mother had enough to buy a new washing machine for the Widow Twanky laundry. “To be conned out of it by the ruthless Abanazer having only made one wish, was intolerable and so every effort was made to track him down and win the lantern back,” he added. A spokesperson in charge of the investigation, a Sergeant Pong Ping serving King Pea of Peking’s very own Peking Police, confirmed that a number of strange occurrences had taken place around Window Twanky’s Laundry that they were looking into, but no arrests had been made and that no further actions were expected. The alleged villain, Abanazer, was unavailable for comment but understood to now be a changed character and living in the Oxspring area.

Nick Hibberd, Director of the Thurgoland Thespians Pantomime, Aladdin. Written by Gavy Lugsden and available through Smith scripts, said: “This is possibly one of the most lengthy and mystical cases I’ve been involved with, but I am pleased to announce that there will be six full reconstructions taking place between Wednesday February 1 to Saturday the February 4, with an early and a late showing on the Saturday. These will be held at the Thurgoland Village Hall. “It goes without saying that we welcome as many onlookers as we can encourage through the doors in the hopes that they may be able to provide any additional information into what took place - but must point out that there will be a small entry fee. “These fees start at as little as £2 per child and £4 per adult on the Wednesday and Thursday evening performances as we like to provide a low cost facility for Scouts, Guides and other larger group bookings. “On the Friday and Saturday shows, the rate increases to just £4 per child and £6 per adult with the events starting at 7.15pm in the evenings and 2.15pm for the Saturday Matinee,” he added. The doors open 30 minutes before ‘curtains up’. Anyone interested in watching one or more of the reconstructions can pre-order their tickets and get allocated seating by telephoning 0114 453 5139. Unallocated seats may be available on entry – but please be aware that that the weekend tickets are selling fast.

Karen who is from Halifax is a Paralympic cyclist and took the gold medal in the women’s time trial at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. She will cut the ribbon at fit20 on Wednesday January 25 at the start of an open afternoon organised to showcase the brand new facility. Based on a wealth of research and experience, fit20 offer unique 20 minute work-outs aimed at people who find the gym can be too time consuming or intimidating. The work outs consist of slow and controlled high intensity training in a precision cooled studiowhich means no sweat and no need to change into gym clothes making it the perfect work out to fit into a busy schedule or a working day. Sessions are taken 1-2-1 with a fully trained Personal Trainer using the latest technology to track results and progress. The innovative Dutch concept was brought to the our brewery shop for ateam great range Farmers Ales UK byVisit husband and wife Niri of and Catherine

Patel, both 49 and from Holmfirth The UK Franchise company’s Fox Valley studio will also serve as a training facility for franchisees from across the UK and is managed by Master Trainer Deborah Sparks-Kerss, from Lincolnshire. Niri said: “We are absolutely delighted that Karen Darke will be officially opening fit20 for us next week, she really is an inspirational woman who believes that we are all stronger than we might think, braver than we might believe and more able than we might feel. “We look forward to showing our studio and our unique concept at the opening - everyone is welcome to come along and find out more about both the fit20 training and Franchise opportunity.” fit20 can be found on the first floor of Harry Brearley House at Fox Valley in the company’s brand new purpose built offices and fitness suite just above Timbuktu and Martyn Kemp Opticians. Annabel Plumtree, Centre Manager at Fox Valley, said: “We are delighted to welcome the fit20 team to Fox Valley and wish them all the very best with their venture and the official opening next week.” For more information about Fox Valley visit www. foxvalleysheffield.co.uk and to find out more about fit20 go to www.fit20.co.uk

Hollin Busk development Dear Editor I thought readers would want to be alerted to the fact that there is a proposal to erect 93 dwellings on the land between Hollin Busk Lane, Carr Road and Fox Glen S36 1GH. Before the planning application is made, the consultants involved, have asked Sheffield Council if they need to have an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). They have concluded that “as the proposals will not generate significant adverse effects on the environment ‌. the application does not need to be accompanied by an EIA.â€? The consultants have asserted that this proposed large development, on our valued green space, will not have adverse effects on the environment. If the council agrees with them, they can make a planning application without rigorous environmental scrutiny. I have looked carefully at the screening checklist and conclude that if this housing development goes ahead there, would be at least four significant negative impacts on the environment: The project is located in a previously undeveloped area where there will be loss of a large area of greenfield land (6.3 hectares) Fox Glen, which is a Local Wildlife Site, would be totally surrounded by housing and not adjacent to the greenfield land, as now, which is so important to its sustainability, The housing will be highly visible and destroy the scenic value of a valued public location. It would destroy the open view across the Don Valley, enjoyed by so many, from the popular public footpath on Hollin Busk Lane (Busk Flats). The footpath, between green belt and green fields is a very important as a flat place to stroll,

run, accessible by pushchairs and the disabled. It is also used as part of a circular route from the edge of Stocksbridge and Deepcar to the village of Bolsterstone and beyond. Carr Road is already susceptible to very serious congestion, as it was never designed to take the current traffic, never mind that associated with 93 more dwellings. More regular traffic would produce an unacceptable situation with no alternative possible. During and after construction and there would be a high risk of accidents particularly near Royd Nursery Infant School, which is opposite the proposed site What can we do? If you wish to ensure that the planners do have to go through an Environmental Impact Assessment, before they can put in a planning application, then make a comment in writing. The council has to make a decision by the 1st February and will be influenced by our feedback with our local knowledge. At this stage we can’t object to the housing proposal itself, as it has n’t been made yet, but we can influence the level of environmental scrutiny. Use Sheffield City Council Planning website or put your comments in writing. The Planning Application reference is 17/00142/EIA.

Dog mess Dear Sir madam, Why are certain people unable to pick up their dogs mess? I have lived at Deepcar for one year and have a dog the size of a small donkey. Never have I failed to remove his mess, why are some dog owners unable to do the same? Pick it up! I’ve contacted the council, even sent pictures but had no response! Please just put your hand in the bag and pick it up! Joanne Frances Cox

The average cost of a wedding is now about ÂŁ16,000. A survey carried out by Halifax Personal Loans reveals that only nine per cent of people think this is a reasonable amount to pay. Over half of those questioned thought this was too much to fork out on their nuptials, believing that ÂŁ10,000 or less was a more appropriate figure. One quarter of people in the survey would hope to cut costs even further by spending between ÂŁ1,000 and ÂŁ5,000. Singletons are the most likely to be dreaming of an extravagant wedding, with a quarter of this group prepared to consider spending more than ÂŁ15,000 when they get hitched. Interestingly, people who are already married or who had been married before were far less likely to see the need to splash out over the odds. Only 13 per cent and 15 per cent respectively believed it was reasonable to spend ÂŁ15,000 or more. Young love knows no financial bounds it seems, with one in five of the 18-25 age group considering ÂŁ15,000 and over a reasonable amount to pay. This compares with one in 10 of the 25-34 age group and eight per cent of the 35-44 age group. Northerners are most inclined to splash out on weddings. Four per cent said spending over

SPENDERS ÂŁ50,000 on their big day would be acceptable. Couples in the southwest are the least likely to pay over the odds, with 17 per cent considering less than ÂŁ1,000 a reasonable amount. When it comes to the honeymoon, more people appear to be comfortable with the typical costs involved. The average cost of a honeymoon trip is estimated at ÂŁ2,475. Weddings seem to have come back in fashion in recent years and we have seen average costs increase dramatically Ian Corfield, head of Halifax Unsecured Personal Loans, says, “Weddings seem to have come back in fashion in recent years and we have seen average costs increase dramatically. “However, our survey suggests that there may be a change in opinion as to how much couples should spend. It may be that the costs typically involved have reached a level that is no longer considered reasonable. “In contrast, people seem generally more comfortable with average honeymoon costs and do not see this level of expense as unreasonable or over-inflated.

CHOOSING the right wedding dress is both extremely exciting and very stressful. Buying a dress for the blushing bride tops any wedding list. Here are a few tips to help you get it right. Firstly, you have to find out what shape you are and find a dress that flatters it. When you’re looking at dresses worn by models, remember that you might be better off looking at real women at real weddings for an idea as to how the dresses might look on you.

Sheaths and Trumpet dresses can make some people feel uncomfortable with how they look so this style is only really recommended for confident brides who feel good about their figure. If you’re having a more informal wedding then an Empire gown might be a suitable and comfortable choice. They can be constructed from lighter fabrics and are ideal for pregnant brides. Make sure you are 100% happy with the dress before buying it. It will be in your photographs that will serve as a lifelong reminder of your special day! Do plenty of browsing, there are plenty of specialist shops, website, blogs and magazines that you can take a look at.

Although wedding dresses aren’t noted for their practicality, you should still bear your particular wedding venue in mind when looking for a dress. If you’re getting married on the beach, you don’t want a big flowing ball gown and if you’re having a very formal church wedding, a skirtbased outfit might not be a good idea. If you’re having a reception at a muddy venue, you don’t want it trailing in the dirt! Also remember that wedding dresses aren’t always white nowadays, pick a colour that suits your skin tone and personal preference. Another important consideration is budget. After doing some browsing and research, put a price range and price limit in place. Don’t forget all the accessories either, shoes, bouquet, a veil, handbag and jewellery can soon add up. Make sure you budget for these too. At the end of the day, the decision on the dress is yours alone. Don’t take too much notice of your family and friends, go for what you want – this will be the most important day of your life after all!

THIS was a good team performance in front of the Stocksbridge home crowd, giving them plenty to cheer about with five tries ensuring a bonus point, further helping with the team push for the top of the table.

With the first team out of action, it was down to the development squad to entertain and they did just that. The try scorers were Jordan Fletcher with a brace, Gary Woodcock who was also man of the match with another sterling performance, Ash Jacobs and Joe Westby.

There were some good performances from some of the new players this season, particularly Jamie Christian. If the team can reflect this performance for the remainder of the season a league win could become a reality.

THREAT: Penistone Church have now scored nine goals without reply in their last two games. PENISTONE Church FC took a stunning 5-0 win against Teversal on Saturday with five different players getting their name on the score sheet. Danny Joynes opened the scoring after just four minutes and goals from Danny Howes and James Stafford saw them lead 3-0 by the break. Andy Ring and Brett Lovell found the target in the second half to complete the rout. After the game Church manager Ian Richards said: “Brilliant today, the performance matched the result it was excellent from start to finish, I’m really pleased. I’m pleased to start with for not getting an injury or anyone sent off. “More importantly the players deserved that score line and it did not flatter them, they were excellent, every single player, including the three that came on. “All good sides lose games but the best sides react and don’t lose two in a row,

we’ve lost to Emley and then won 4-0 and 5-0, it’s brilliant that we’ve scored nine goals in the last two games and the people who come to watch come for that entertainment - they come to see those goals but for me as a manager the most pleasing thing is the two clean sheets with different personnel at the back. “I thought Jimmy (Stafford) came in and did well and stepped in as if he’d been playing every week and he was well supported by Brett (Lovell) who again was excellent in both boxes and gives us that real leadership and presence. “On top of that our two full backs were good on the ball and defended well and our midfield three worked harder than anyone else on the pitch which gives you that strong platform to allow your front three to go play. “A special mention to Joynsey (Danny Joynes) because he knows that last week he wasn’t up to his usual level but today

everything about his game shows why he’s one of the best strikers in this league. “I thought Ringy (Andy Ring) showed why he’s played at such a high level with his experience, his link up play, his back to goal, his aerial threat and his intelligence in terms of his movement was second to none and I’m really pleased for Ryan Smith who’s come in for the last two games and he’s had an impact in both games, he’s back enjoying his football, he’s only nineteen, he’s got a bright future and we’ll make sure he does the best out of that. “We have a cup game on Wednesday against Clipstone and we want to win that to go into the quarter finals, we want to do both, get promotion and get to a cup final whether that’s in The Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup or in the NCEL League Cup.”

RICHARD Hayes continued to reap the rewards of consistent training as he took nearly two minutes off his personal best at the Inskip Half Marathon in Lancashire on Sunday in a time of 77.26, finishing 19th overall. Kinder Trial Fell Race saw three competitors complete the 11.2-mile course with 2,133 feet of elevation. First back was Ian Charlesworth in 18th place in 2:16.45. Next was Damian Kilpin in 52nd in 2:52.35. Brent Lindsey was 71st in 3:09.59. This year will see Penistone Footpath Runners extend its competitive range with the entry of the club into Division Four of the Northern Track and Field League. Although currently well-served with runners, the club is keen to encourage men and women who might be interested in competing in field events; shot putt, hammer, discus, pole vault, long jump, triple jump. Coaching can be arranged. For further details contact team manager Richard Hayes at richhayes@sky. com. Meanwhile a new club competition based around local parkruns has seen members out and about on a Saturday morning. There were significant turnouts of Penistone Footpath Runners members at Barnsley parkrun at Locke park, and Concord, Hillsborough and Castle parkruns in Sheffield. Members must complete six different events to gain points over the year.

ALTHOUGH Steels made the brighter start of the two sides on a terrible pitch against table-topping Shaw Lane, the first half provided little chances for either team and ended in a midfield stalemate in the mud. The second half started a bit more action and Scott Ruthven came close to opening the scoring for the Steels. The home team scored the winner on 85 minutes with Jono Wafula shooting past David Reay, albeit from a seemingly offside position. On the balance of chances in the second half the league leaders just deserved to win this, but only just. Stocksbridge face Romulus at home on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.
