BODY FOUND IN SEARCH FOR MISSING ECCLESFIELD WOMAN POLICE officers searching for missing Sheffield woman Angela Simmonite have discovered a body.

WORK TO BEGIN ON DEEPCAR HOMES As part of a comprehensive regeneration of Deepcar, the new Bloor Homes development, which is located on the derelict GR Steins Brickworks site at Deepcar, will also see the relocation of the present waste water treatment works to a new and improved facility being built

by Yorkshire Water next to their existing Ewden waterworks and programmed to come on stream in 2020.

Angela was reported missing from her home address in Ecclesfield on Saturday November 25.

As concern grew, so did the search with many local people joining in.

Set in 1km of new public green space and walkways along the River Don, the development will consist of 413 dwellings comprising two-bedroom apartments, and three and four-bedroom houses.

Her family have been informed of the discovery and continue to be supported by officers.

The work will bring a substantial boost to the local area through job creation and improvements to transport infrastructure. Bloor Homes will also be building a bridge spanning the River Don.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place later to determine cause of death.

INFRASTRUCTURE work on a new 413-home development in Deepcar is due to begin by the end of the year due to a joint investment by Bloor Homes and Yorkshire Water, in a partnership facilitated by Sheffield Council’s regeneration team.

Search teams discovered the body of a woman in a brook close to the River Don close to Fife Street, Wincobank, on the afternoon of Friday December 1 and while formal identification has not yet been confirmed, officers do believe it to be that of 57-year-old Angela.

Tigers team shapes up for new season

The first stages of groundworks on the site are due to begin in December, Jason Woolliscroft, Project Director at Bloor Homes, said: “We are aware that there has been a great deal of anticipation about the site and its redevelopment.

“We also welcome Bloor and Yorkshire Water’s commitment to build a new waste water treatment works at Ewden allowing the existing Deepcar facility to be closed, which will bring significant improvements to water and air quality.

“Bloor Homes and Yorkshire Water Services have entered into an agreement that will see the decommissioning of the current waste water treatment facility off Manchester Road, and the delivery of a brand-new waste water treatment facility 2km further down the valley.

“This is an important step in the regeneration of Stocksbridge and of the Upper Don Valley and a demonstration of our commitment to bringing forward large ‘brownfield’ sites to meet housing targets wherever possible.

“In turn this will enable Bloor Homes to commence work in delivering highquality housing for local people, and transforming a redundant brownfield site into a high quality residential neighbourhood of 413 much needed homes.

This constitutes a very substantial investment into Sheffield.”

Councillor Ben Curran, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development at Sheffield City Council said; “We are delighted that the long derelict Deepcar Brickworks site is finally to be reclaimed and put to a new use for over 400 new homes, greenspaces and riverside walks

by Bloor Homes.

“Council officers have worked very closely with both parties for two years to bring this partnership together and will continue to offer support and guidance to bring it to fruition.

Local councillor Richard Crowther added: “I welcome the improvements in air and water quality and reduction in pollution which should be realised by this scheme. I am also delighted to see the development of more high-quality riverside green space and I look forward to the involvement of local groups and volunteers.”

ANGER AS BANK Lound pupils perform at Royal Albert Hall TO CLOSE ALL LOCAL BRANCHES MP APPEALS NATWEST have announced the closure of branches across the country, including Stocksbridge, Penistone and Hillsborough.

The announcement has left customers in the north of Sheffield angry, with Stocksbridge and Penistone being left with extremely limited options.

In a statement, NatWest said: “We have recently announced that we’re closing some branches. As customers change the way they bank with us, we must change the way that we serve them and this means that some branches will have to close.

“Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously. We know it can affect people in the local area and we’ll always work hard to guide you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on.”

Local MP Angela Smith wrote to the Chief Executive of NatWest, asking him to reconsider these proposals before it is too late and to take account of the isolated nature of both towns and the fact some of her constituents find accessing the internet difficult.

Commenting Angela said: “While it is true that many banking tasks can now be carried out on the internet or over the phone and that there will be still be limited services available at the Post Offices there are still many other services that won’t be available to my constituents once these branches close.

“It is also true that for many the use of the internet is impossible because of the lack of coverage or because they do not trust the medium and for these people a physical bank is still necessary.

The Penistone branch will close on June 27 of next year and Stocksbridge will close its doors for the final time on June 14. Hillsborough will close on June 18.

Branches in Broomhill, Millhouses, Woodseats, Dinnington and Hoyland will also close. Nat West say that branch usage is down 40% from 2014.

“Worse still for many small businesses, they will now have to travel many more miles to deposit often large amounts of cash or worse still it may mean more cash being held onsite for longer with all the risks that can entail.

“I have therefore written to the NatWest asking they reconsider the closure of these branches.”

CHILDREN from Lound Junior Primary School were part of over 700 young musicians from South Yorkshire who took to the stage to perform at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall last month.

Sheffield’s Music Hub arranged for performances from young musicians from four of Sheffield schools.

They were also joined by the Music Hubs Jazz Band to make a one off jazz collective and a mass choir of young people from across the

region. They performed an original jazz composition from local composer Chris Noble.

The event hosted by Music for Youth, is an annual celebration of young musical talent from across the UK. George, a 12 year old trombonist in the Jazz Band said: “I was really nervous about playing at the Royal Albert Hall, but it was fantastic. Hundreds of people came to hear us.”

Sheffield City Council, said: “What a wonderful way to celebrate our young people’s musical talent. It is a huge honour to perform at the Royal Albert Hall and provides our young people with great opportunity to showcase their musical abilities.

We want all children in Sheffield to have the opportunity to unlock their musical talents.

SHEFFIELD Sands, the local branch of the national charity for Stillborn and Neonatal Death, had a stall at Fox Valley to raise awareness of the cause, and to ensure that local people know that there is support network available for them if they suffer the loss of a baby.

Sands supports anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth. Bereavement support is at the core of everything we do. As well as offering a national Helpline for parents, families, carers and health professionals, the Sheffield branch offers a monthly support group held at the St Mary’s Conference Centre, Bramall Lane on the Second Thursday of every month. There is also an online forum and message boards enabling bereaved families to connect with others; and a wide range of leaflets, books and other resources available online and in print. The Sheffield branch set up just over a year ago; it became apparent to a number of people across South Yorkshire that there was no facility for parents and relatives who had suffered the devastation of losing a baby before, during, or shortly after, birth to get the support the needed in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley or Doncaster. The Sands committee is made up almost entirely of parents who have lost a child in such a manner, and who want to do everything possible to work to ensure that no-one else has to go through such a harrowing, painful experience, and to provide as much support as possible to those who do. Many of the volunteers have undertaken “befriender” training, which provides them with the skills to counsel others who have gone through the same experience.

Whilst known as Sheffield Sands, the aim of the group is to provide support to the whole of South Yorkshire. Links have

been forged with the bereavement teams across South Yorkshire, including both Jessops and Barnsley Hospital NHS Trust, and fundraising and awareness events have been undertaken in Worksop, Sheffield City Centre, and Dore.

Two of the members of the committee live in Stocksbridge: we want to ensure that our community are aware of the support available, and ask for your support in making sure that this cause, often left unspoken due to the sensitivity of the subject matter, is tackled head on, and that we can raise awareness not only of the support available, but of the incredible scientific advancements made in saving babies lives, and of the funds needed for further research.

EXTREME SPORTS COMPANY TO DEVELOP SKI VILLAGE SITE

FOLLOWING a competitive bidding process Sheffield Council has appointed the Extreme Destinations-led consortium to develop, launch and operate a 48-acre, multi-million-pound long-term sustainable Extreme branded world class sports, leisure and accommodation solution at Parkwood.

Extreme’s unique brand and destination experience will be developed on the old ski village site and surrounding area bringing hundreds of jobs to the city.

Incorporating a combination of action and adventure sports facilities, including the possibility of an indoor sky diving facility, live music, E-Gaming and virtual-reality hub as well as a restaurants, bars, social spaces, retail and themed accommodation.

Extreme says that their brand reach will be harnessed to broaden Sheffield’ appeal and drive visitor numbers via Extreme’s Digital Media Network, its 128 global sports and lifestyle ambassadors such as mountain

bike rider Nicholi Rogatkin, snowboarder Jamie Nicholls, skier Rowan Cheshire and its presence at more than 80 events annually. These create a monthly reach in excess of 100 million people globally.

The agreement between Sheffield City Council and Extreme Destinations, incorporates a partnership with leading UK facilities operator Continuum Attractions, the UK-wide operations company. They will be instrumental in the consortium group, with input into the planning and then operating of the facilities developed under the globally renowned Extreme brand.

Alistair Gosling, CEO of Extreme said: “This is a fantastic and unique opportunity to deliver an Extreme Destination right in the heart of Sheffield We will be tapping into the worldwide phenomena of creating action and adventure destinations, where all the excitement of sport and leisure facilities come

Extreme’s aim is to start work in order to open phase one in 2019 before concentrating on its plans to develop residential and leisure facilities on the site, subject to planning permission.

Tree planting celebrates 175 years of steelworks THE Steel Valley Project, a conservation charity based in Stocksbridge, held a commemorative tree planting ceremony this week funded by Liberty Steel to mark 175 years of steelworks in the Stocksbridge valley.

Commenting on the ceremony this week, Lynn Crowe said: “It was a privilege to be at this event today and I can’t believe it’s nearly 30 years since the first planting ceremony. This is a great community environmental project.”

Many of the people at the ceremony had been involved in a similar tree planting event 29 years ago to celebrate the launch of the Steel Valley Project.

The group this week planted 50 native trees, including hazel, sessile oak, field maple and mountain ash. The trees are currently less than a metre in height and were notch planted on banking above the steelworks.

A search via Look Local and on social media helped to track down some of the school children from that event back in April 1988 and the Steel Valley Project received some lovely messages sharing memories of the day.

Deputy Mayor Julie Grocutt was also in attendance, along with Roger Moss, a former steelworker and now a trustee of the Steel Valley Project and Lynn Crowe, formerly of the Countryside Commission, both of whom were also at the 1988 ceremony.

Roger Moss, trustee for the Steel Valley Project, added: “What a wonderful way to celebrate 175 years of the steel industry in Stocksbridge by planting trees on the hillside. It was particularly good that some of the young people who planted the first trees come along with their families.

“The company began tree planting 30 years ago and it is very satisfying to know that Liberty and the community remain committed to improving their local environment.”

£2,964.49 and the Inman Pavilion Science Group were awarded £2,809.56.

BUSKING BARITONE IN CONCERT

OFF-ROAD TEAM STRIKE AGAIN

THIS time last year, Sheffield classical singer Maxwell Thorpe was wowing pavement audiences with his striking baritone voice wherever he busked around South Yorkshire.

One day he was heard performing outside Mothercare in Sheffield and was invited to sing at a prestigious Cathedral concert with John Reilly from Boy on a Dolphin and Acoustic Angels, Canadian musician Lewis Nitikman

and Stannington Brass Band. Since then, he has performed with John and Lewis at the City Hall, a couple of concerts with Stannington Brass Band and is now branching out into concerts as a sole artist.

Maxwell commented: “I still enjoy busking but being able to perform on a concert stage is fantastic.”

Hunshelf party benefits from bags of help from supermarket giants HUNSHELF Parish Community’s Christmas party organising committee is delighted to announce it has bagged £1,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme.

Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year.

Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £40 million to over 9,700 local community projects.

Millions of shoppers have voted in Tesco stores up and down the country and it can now be revealed Hunshelf Parish Community Christmas party has been awarded £1,000. Work will now begin on bringing the project to life. The Parish Christmas Party brings together all the age groups in the Parish community in a single event which caters for all.

The provision of the buffet and entertainment is free for all attendees but relies on fundraising to support the small grant provided by the Parish Council. The event was in decline until its format was changed from a ‘senior parishioners only tea’ to the more inclusive all ages party.

Since then, attendance has grown from circa 30 to 100. This is the one community event that brings all age groups together to socialise and share their experiences and knowledge of the community’s past.

The event is organised by community volunteers and is supported by community donations of food and small gifts for the children.

Whilst an entertainment programme is provided, usually a magician/ventriloquist for the children and a soloist or singers for the adults, the evening is always rounded off with coffee and mince pies and a carol sing comprising both traditional and local carols.

Thereby maintaining the 100+ year tradition of singing Green Moor carols and festive songs The award of the Tesco Bags of Help community grant will not only guarantee the 2017 event but will go a long way to underwrite the 2018 event thereby ensuring the continuity of this Parish tradition.

Four quad bikes and four motor bike riders where spoken to and given 171 notices, this is a warning notice and if these individuals are seen again their vehicles will be seized.

The officers engaged with local dog walkers, horse riders and other members of the public.

Superjam comes to Ecclesfield School ECCLESFIELD School hosted their first Superjam Tea Party for the local community, with a focus on the elderly, lonely or socially isolated this week.

Sean Hollingworth, the business and community engagement manager arranged for the school to welcome the group.

The event was a huge success and Sean, his volunteer students and the choir pulled out all the stops to ensure the guests had an amazing time.

Ecco Volunteers reached out into the community at the end of November to host their first ever SuperJam Tea Party.

The grassland has been able to thrive because of all the direct sunlight which has been allowed in as a result of all the woody material that was cut down last winter and it is hoped lots of new flowers have been able to take hold.

Now there is a need to cut back the regrowth that has sprung up on the old woody stumps, cut the grass down and put as much of the arisings into habitat piles as possible. As well as helping ‘wee beasties’ such as hedgehogs hide in the vegetation piles, removing the cut grass keeps most of the grassland nutrient-poor, which helps more types of plants to gain and maintain a foothold.

The group will be on the reserve from 10am and continue until around 3pm. Volunteers can join

us at any time and should bring old clothing, waterproofs, stout footwear and a packed lunch – we will provide tools, gloves, training and drinks.

The volunteer day is supported by Barnsley Council’s Countryside Ranger Team and staff from Kingswood Peak Venture.

Kate Dobson, a spokesperson for the volunteer group said: “This wonderful new nature reserve is still in its first year as mainly grassland and now we want to get the site ready for its first winter. We welcome local people to join us and become part of this new, community-led project.”

Adam Teasdale from Kingswood Peak Venture added: “The Kingswood team are focused on nurturing the environment at their own adventure and activity centre in Sheffield, and have recently planted 205 new trees to encourage growth and wildlife.

Kingswood are really pleased to get involved in such an important cause and do their bit by helping local organisations and environments.”

COUNTDOWN TO Bolsterstone Xmas Tree Nursery

THE Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Nursery has kindly donated two beautiful Christmas trees to Fox Valley in Stocksbridge in support of the Dransfield Foundation.

Centre manager at Fox Valley Annabel Plumtree said: “The trees which have been donated to Fox Valley look lovely and we would like to thank the Christmas Tree Nursery at Bolsterstone.”

One of the trees has been placed by the bandstand in the piazza area at Fox Valley and the other is by the entrance to Sandersons Department store at the busy shopping centre for shoppers and visitors to enjoy.

Trees can be purchased from Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Nursery where there will be a Bear Hunt for younger visitors every Saturday and Sunday as well as a free gift for every child.

Beauty expert inspires students CELEBRITY make-up artist, Armand Beasley, visited Hair and Beauty students at Barnsley College to talk about his extensive career in make-up and skincare.

Armand Beasley is a celebrity make-up artist and image expert who has worked in the cosmetics industry since 1994. His work ranges from the Oscars to being a regular face on TV makeover shows, with clients including Gok Wan and Michelle Keegan.

He came to the college as an inspirational speaker to talk to current Hair and Beauty students about his career path and gave tips on being successful within the competitive industry. The students also took the opportunity to ask Armand some beauty-related questions, where he carried out live demonstrations.

Carly Acton, a Level 3 Make-Up Artistry student, said: “I really enjoyed Armand’s question and answer session, it has given me a good insight into careers with beauty industry. I loved having a makeover from a professional make-up artist.”

Emma Hanks, Hair and Beauty Course Leader at Barnsley College, added: “To have Armand come to college and share his experience with our students is a real honour. Hillsborough trio arrested over human trafficking raids FIVE people have appeared in court charged with human trafficking offences after a number of warrants were executed across the city.

Nicolae Ionita, 24, Razvan Tanasa, 30, and Claudia Ionita, 29, all of Leppings Lane, Hillsborough, Sorina Cretu, 22, of Attercliffe Road, Sheffield and Shane Booth, 27, of Henderson Place, Rotherham, have all been charged with human trafficking under Section

Two of the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

They have been bailed to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday December 20.

Football round-up Penistone Church 3-2 Garforth Town

PENISTONE Church FC survived a late fightback in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday, beating Garforth Town 3-2.

Brett Lovell, Kieran Ryan and Nathan Keightley put Church 3-0 up before Mark Simpson and Jack McMurrough reduced the arrears.

High Green Villa 3 -4 Grimethorpe (AET) MIKEY Vella opened the scoring early on in this League Cup game when he capitalised on a mix up between the Grimethorpe goalkeeper and a defender, before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper. Grimethorpe were level before halftime though.

Joe Moorhouse scored his second in as many games after being put through on goal, he shrugged off a defender and calmly put the ball beyond the keeper.

Villa tried to hold on, but Grimethorpe drew level again, despite the officials missing an obvious foul on a Villa player in the attacking corner.

Another cup tie looked destined for penalties until Grimethorpe struck the killer blow, and finally took the lead less than five minutes from time. A soft free kick on the halfway line was pumped into the box and the ball was squared to an attacker who looked offside.

A very tough loss to take but an unbelievable effort from Villa against the current leaders of the Premier Division.

Stocksbridge 17 – 20 Sheffield Medicals AFTER rearranging the coaching and management set up since last week, Stocksbridge arrived early at Coal Pit Lane and got down to a well organised warm up. The feeling of team unity was thriving as the lads came out onto the pitch to face a young Sheffield Medics side.

Eight minutes in and Medics were awarded their first penalty in front of the sticks which went over giving them the first points on the board.

Oughtibridge WMFC 5 Woodhouse Village 2 BLADES Super Draw league leaders Woodhouse Village were the visitors at Oughtibridge War Memorial and were soon two goals to the good after a dreadful opening 10 minutes by the home side.

Ross Brown was introduced after 15 minutes and a change in formation completely changed the balance of play.

First Ollie Black, who was becoming more and more of a threat, went close and then Black played Callum Chambers through who made no mistake in pulling a goal back.

Black again went close and the home side began to pile on the pressure. Ross Brown equalised just before half time with a superb header from a Danny Booth free kick. In the second half Oughtibridge were in top gear with some great possession football and it was only a matter of time before they went ahead.

First a Ross Brown through ball was superbly finished by Chambers and then a superb Josh Walker free kick made it four before Chambers completed his hat-rick to make the final score 5-2.

Bridge came back with some good attacking play and mauled the ball over 10 meters up the field before playing it out to the backs. A head injury of a Medics player stopped play which gave Bridge a chance to regroup. The restart was a scrum followed by some big carries with a penalty advantage been played as the home side continuously drove the ball in to the opposition until Whittaker dove for the corner flag and scored the first try of the game. The kick was not successfully converted.

Medics continued to make ground with fast backs until Spencer took their wing out into touch in try saving tackle, the ref went back for a penalty. A yellow card was handed to Keenan at 33 minutes, which saw the Medics take another penalty kick at the sticks that missed. An awake Jones gathered the ball and kicked it to touch giving Medics a line out which they went on to win.

The ball moved across the field where yet another penalty was awarded to the visitors who utilised the opportunity for more points on the board. With the last five minutes to go both teams looked even in mid field until Bridge

overturned the visitors scrum but couldn’t make ground through the Medics defence leading to half time. Half time score 5-6 to the Medics.

Keenan came back on after half time, and Bridge kicked off to the Medics who worked their way up the field eventually finding a gap in the Stocksbridge defence who didn’t react to the fast moving medics. Try scored at 42 minutes and the conversion went over. Whittaker replaced by debuting Booth.

Bridge kicked off and Aspin turned the ball over giving Bridge the attacking possession.

Doing what works, they walked down the field picking and going until they were awarded a penalty, Frith sent the ball to touch 10 meters out from the try line. Medics stole the line out but proceeded to give a knock on where Bridge utilised the scrum. With some more pick and goes ground was made before passing ball to Stefan on the wing who scored a try after slipping through three defenders. Frith hits the bar - no conversion.

The game resumed with even play until penalties awarded to the Medics from lazy play on Stocksbridge’s behalf. Medics made a break with an overhead kick but unfortunately touched the ball down over the dead line. Stockbridge was awarded the scrum back from where ball was kicked on the 22.

Play made down the field in favour of Bridge with big carries from Woodcock making 10 meters, followed by the rest of the pack working as a team until ball was sent out of play by Bridge.

Medics won their line out and attacked the line where Stefan tackled their winger in to touch.

A short throw to Connor Brown who then made a break with fantastic support allowed the ball to be played down the field and flow through hands in offloads until eventually going out for another line out.

The Medics camped in Bridge’s half keeping the ball in hands while Bridge gave more penalties away for silly mistakes.

Aspin received a yellow in the 75th minute for not rolling away from tackle. Medics kicked to touch for a line out 5m out where they mauled the ball and then played the pick and go game themselves earning a try in the top left corner, kick converted. With three minutes left on the clock and down to 14 men, Bridge kicked off and played down the field mauling the ball until it was collapsed and scrum awarded to the Medics.

Bridge turned the scrum over allowing Vice Captain Frith and Captain Newton to make ground until a scrum was awarded in their favour.

Bridge dug deep and drove towards the sticks where a break was made and the final try of the game was scored.

Kick converted, final whistle. Score 17-20.

Stocksbridge need to work on their discipline to reduce the number of penalties given away but continue to work as a team and carry on doing the right things.

Stocksbridge travel to Harrogate next weekend on the search for a win in December.

Winter Cup action at Stocksbridge Golf Club SATURDAY November 18 was round two of the Winter Cup at Stocksbridge Golf Club. The weather was reasonable for November and this led to some great scoring. 41 players started and 11 were on par or better.

In third place was Craig Brailsford with 41 points (five under par). Second place went to Chris Walker on 42 points (six under par).

The winner with a magnificent 43 points, that’s seven under par, was Richard Sheppard.

On Sunday November 19, a smaller field competed for the Pro’s Prize. Scoring was decent but nowhere near the day before. Third place went to Stuart Marsh on 37 points. Second was Trevor Moseley on 38 points. In first place was Brian Dobb, also on 38 points, but with a better back nine holes.

The Dragon’s Christmas Cracker was cancelled due to the lack of players on a blustery and showery day. There were enough though to play in the Dragons Winter Cup. The overall winner was Charlie Dale with 36 points. Charlie was the only player to make par.

Division One winner was Noel Weaver on 31 points. Runner-up was Les Wright with 30 points and the Division Two runner-up was Alf Pearson on 34 points.

The winner was Mick Mosforth, also on 34 points but with a better back six holes.

Saturday November 25 saw a smaller field than usual contest the third round of the Winter Cup. Two players were outstanding and the rest of the field bunched close together. In third place was Steve Page on 37 points. Second was Andy Taylor on 40 points. The clear winner was Ian Hul-

bert on a magnificent 42 points (six under par).

The Dragon’s sixth Christmas Cracker of the season had a wide variety of scores on a very cold and blustery day.

Third place went to Noel Weaver on 36 points, second was Charlie Dale also on 36 points. In first place was Denis Haley on 37 points. Charlie won this Christmas Cracker as Denis has already won one this year.

THE Percy Pud 10k took place at Loxley on Sunday, with 2,519 runners completing the undulating course in fine conditions.

First back was Gareth Cooke in a time of 34.41.

Next was the rapidly improving Mark Riordan in a new personal best time of 38.21, narrowly pipping Damien Briscoe who also ran a personal best of 38.36.

Julia Cobham was first woman back in a personal best of 44.49 followed by Julie Moxon in 47.35. Seuranie Johnstone ran a personal best of 49.17 whilst Dawn Godley also set a new best time with 53.52.

Dawn Broom made the journey across the Pennines to run in the Myerscough 10 mile road race near Preston.

She finished first F50 in 74.13 after a well-paced effort.

At the Gravy Pud Fell Race at Tintwistle, Damian Kilpin was the first Penistone Footpath Runner home, also finishing third V40 in a time of 40.15. Julie Darigala was second F45 in 49.54 and Julia Johnson was first F50 in 51.50.

Tigers confirm two riders for next season

BRITISH bulldog Josh Bates is to stay with his local club Sheffield Tigers for the 2018 season.

And that means the Barnsley racer is now sorted with both Premiership and Championship clubs after his return to Leicester was also confirmed last week.

It promises to be an exciting year for Bates as Sheffield look to retain their league title against increasingly tough competition.

“It’s a big challenge for everyone, but I’m excited by it,” he said.

“Last season was amazing and it’s given me and everyone at Sheffield a taste for success.

“The Championship is looking really strong when you look around at the other teams, but we’re going to be strong too and we’ll take some beating.

Son of legendary former rider Andy, Smith won the Premiership Knockout Cup with Belle Vue last season.

“For me personally it’s nice to know I’m sorted in both the Championship and Premiership, doubling up again, I’m pleased about that.

First win of the season for junior Pigs

Stocksbridge RUFC u13 20-10 Dinnington RUFC u13 THE Junior Pigs welcomed Dinnington RUFC to Coal Pit Lane on a fine Sunday morning, securing their first win of the season.

With excellent playing conditions and sporting their new team kit sponsored

by Asphalt Grid Systems, it all looked promising for the lads.

However, all did not got to plan as the first two trys of the day went to the Dinnington behemoth on the left hand wing, who broke the line on both occasions and skipped out of would-be tackles left, right and centre.

Things were looking ominous but the Piglets however displayed their “never die” attitude and created an excellent try for number 10 Alex Pegg in the top right hand corner, which saw the hard work of the forwards and backs combining to reap the reward just before half time.

By David Bradley STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels’ trip to Newcastle Town looked like it was going to be an easy three points after they took the lead within four minutes.

Steels were slick and the passing was smooth. The build-up for the first goal was exceptional and when Todd Jordan crossed for Joe Lumsden to head home, everything looked to be going to plan.

Steels had plenty of chances to add to the goal tally but couldn’t convert them. But they were then sloppy and gave the ball away in their own half and Newcastle’s first shot resulted in a goal as Lee shot past Reay who had no chance.

Steels were still in control and just before half time they went back in front with a well worked goal. Brodie Litchfield crossed and Joe Lumsden slid in at the back post to scramble the ball home.

The second half saw Newcastle Town come out with more purpose and within four minutes, they were level, as more sloppy play let in Wilson to score the second for Newcastle Town.
