NOW AND THEN - TWINS REUNITED stocksbridge Whitwell Community Centre Cedar Road (opp. Jnr School)

IN AUGUST 2013, Look Local ran a story about eleven set of twins, all from the Chapeltown and Ecclesfield area that were all due to start school that year. This week, four years later, most of the twins reunited, although two of the sets were unable to make the reunion.

However, even the ones that couldn’t make it still see each other on a weekly basis and have kept their special bond from their youth. Mother to one of the sets of twins, Sue Powell, told Look Local: “We thought it would be nice to show how much they’ve changed and to celebrate the support that we have all given to each other during these early years of being twins mums.

“The mums all still meet regularly to enjoy a night out and many of the kids see each other in school, with four sets at Lound Junior School, two sets at Windmill Hill, a set at Coit, a set at Southey Green Primary and three sets at Ecclesfield Junior School. The remaining set, mid-top on the original photo, but unable to attend for reunion, attend Foxhill.

“It is quite rare nowadays that all of the twins manage to get together at the same time and it was lovely to see how well they all clicked with each other once again. Although the majority are not identical, there still seems to be some connection with one and other - maybe its as simple as they all appreciate what it’s like to be twin.”

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE - JOIN MARIE CURIE GROUP MARIE Curie is looking for local people to help launch the newly formed Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and Oughtibridge Fundraising Group to raise awareness of the charity and attract vital funds so that Marie Curie nurses can continue to provide care for people with terminal illnesses in the comfort of their owns homes.

Volunteers will meet regularly to plan events, promote fundraising in the local area and support the Charity’s national campaigns including the Christmas Street Collections, the Great Daffodil Appeal and the Blooming Great Tea Party. Nikki Ayrton, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie explained: “Marie Curie nurses provide a vital service in our area, caring for local people with terminal illnesses. Whilst the Charity is part funded by the NHS, it is heavily dependent on donations from the general public and our fundraising groups play a pivotal role in supporting the Charity.

“Our fundraising groups are made up of volunteers from all walks of life. Groups choose how to raise money, from bake sales to race nights, tombola’s to sponsored events, making a difference for patients and their families living with a terminal illness in their local area.” Marie Curie is calling for volunteers with a range of different skills to join the team to have fun, meet new people, raise money and increase awareness of local Marie Curie nurses. If you have an affinity with Marie Curie, are organised, creative, keen to raise money for a worthy cause and looking for a new challenge then why not join the team. There are a number of exciting roles available including a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. To join the group or to find out more about other ways to support the charity, please contact Nikki Ayrton on 01274386190 / 07525392984 or email nikki.Ayrton@mariecurie.org.uk

Caring families needed to adopt in Sheffield LAST week was national adoption week and Sheffield City Council is asking for more families to help change the lives of children throughout the city by adopting a child. Seven children in Sheffield under the age of eight need adoptive families, five of these children are under the age of three. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families said: “I really hope that Andrea’s experience inspires other people to adopt. We encourage applications from

a wide variety of people and need to find forever homes for children of all ages and all backgrounds. The adoption process can take time but our role is to make sure that we create families that are right together, right for those people who are adopting and right for the child or young person and to ensure it will be their forever family. “We need more people to come forward so we have enough families for the children and young people in our care. Why not adopt – you can and will make a difference to someone’s life chances Please, do come forward to speak to us we hold in-

CCTV released in connection to Sheffield burglary

formation evenings so you can speak to adoption team in person, or there is always someone ready to talk to you on the phone if you’d prefer .” Adopter Andrea said: “To anyone considering adoption if your relationship, support network and you yourself are strong and really have an open heart then absolutely go for it. It’s not without its challenges but neither is life. It’s a rollercoaster but one I don’t want to get off. We find it so rewarding putting our love in and being loved back.

Talking about the adoption experience she added: “I enjoyed it and we really couldn’t have been matched with better children. It was good for us to be open about everything and it was great to learn more about each other’s upbringing and childhood. The training we did was great. And whilst parenting is an on-going learning adventure, the preparation meant we felt as ready as we could. By the time we got to panel, we felt confident and had the support of our social worker.” To find out more please call us on 0114 273 5010 or visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/adoption

New footbridge for Ingbirchworth A NEW footbridge and boardwalk have been installed by Barnsley Council’s Countryside Rangers from funding by the Peak and Northern Footpath Society. A new footbridge and boardwalk have been built on the boundary of Barnsley and Kirklees. The work was needed after stream banks were damaged by livestock leaving a three to four metre marshy area. Utilising recycled stone from

the nearby farm estate, Barnsley Council Countryside Rangers and apprentices built a new stone clapper bridge and boardwalk link to assist walkers to cross the stream and waterlogged land. On Tuesday October 17, Cllr Robert Barnard - Chair of Penistone Area Council, David Hurrell - Chair of Peak and Northern Footpath Society and Chris Davison – Peak and Northern Area Officer and Local Access Forum

Member, joined the landowner and countryside rangers for the official bridge opening and handover. A grant cheque of £751 was also presented from Peak and Northern Footpath Society for further work to the site. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We are working hard to improve the 750 kilometres of footpaths and bridleways in Barnsley for everyone to access. The new boardwalk and bridge

add to other work we have already completed on this site including replacing two difficult stiles with a kissing gate and squeeze stile. “Leading an active lifestyle has been proven to improve both the length and quality of life. So what better excuse is there than to get out and make the most of Barnsley’s beautiful countryside and scenic routes.”

Are you interested in woodlands and green woodworking? THE public are invited to join in with the greenwood crafts session in a woodland setting in Oughtibridge on Sunday November 19 from 10am to 3pm.

grain. This process is carried out using a ‘froe’ which opens the wood where it naturally breaks away. This is easiest carried out and more effective with freshly cut wood.

This event is open to people of all abilities over the age of 12 years and is free of charge. However, it is limited to 10 places only so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Steel Valley Project and Jasper Prachek, a local rural craftsman, will be providing tools, equipment and materials in order to show people how to cleave Oak wood using traditional woodland techniques.

You will be able to have a go at using a range of tools and equipment commonly used by woodsmen utilising green wood to make a variety of objects such as chairs, spoons, fencing poles, gates, tools, garden features and in construction.

Contact Kate.hughes@steelvalleyproject.org, call 0114 2830880 or book through www.greenwoodcraftoughtibridge.eventbrite.co.uk. Location details will be given on booking confirmation.

Kate Hughes, Environmental Project Officer at Steel Valley Project, who is delivering the session commented: “This will be an interesting and inspiring workshop where you will gain the unique opportunity to learn new skills and practise them throughout the day under the guidance of local award winning expert, Jasper Prachek. ‘Cleft’ wood has a strong structure as it is processed along the natural

The parts created by you at our event will be used to construct a cleft oak handrail which will rely on a greenwood mortice and tenon joint post and rail design. As the wood dries, the joint will bind together and result in a strong and sturdy handrail for the steep steps within the woodland. This will be installed shortly after using the support of our regular weekday volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering or would like to help out with this event, please also get in touch with Kate Hughes. This event has been made possible through the direct support of Bradfield Parish Council, Community Bridge Shop, Stocksbridge and JG Graves Trust based in Sheffield to whom Steel Valley Project are very grateful.

A NUMBER of local causes received £500 grants from Ecclesfield Parish Council this week, helping them to continue to serve the community. Shaun Toulson of Chapelgreen Advice Centre, Ed Brown of Chapeltown Forum and Richard Young from Grenoside Community Centre were all presented their chequers by vice chair of Ecclesfield Parish Council, Councillor Zoe Sykes.

In presenting the cheques Councillor Sykes said “Ecclesfield Parish Council is pleased to make a grant to these well-established organisations who do so much good work in the community without any personal reward and solely for the benefit of others.” Shaun Toulson of the Chapelgreen Advice Centre said: “We are grateful to Ecclesfield Parish Council for this generous grant and I would encourage any local group to make an application.”

Ecclesfield Parish Council will consider making a grant to any group or organisation working for the benefit of Burncross, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Grenoside or High Green. Application forms and an explanatory note can be obtained from the Parish Council website www.ecclesfield-pc.gov.uk or by telephoning 0114 284 5095 during office hours.

Chapeltown Show a success

CHAPELTOWN Forum have announced the Chapeltown Village Show 2017 a huge success and Windmill Hill School were delighted to scoop the School Trophy for the second year running. The show far exceeded the previous year’s statistics by having 144 exhibitors entering 345 entries across all sections. Once open to the public in the afternoon the Newton Hall was crowded with another record number of visitors and refreshments were enjoyed, being provided by Cafe Revolution of Chapeltown. Trophies were kindly presented by Councillor Michael Appleby, the chair of Ecclesfield Parish Council.

•uk

The trophy winners were Windmill Hill School with over 30 children entering pieces of work across most of the children’s sections.

Well done Windmill Hill for your support and encouragement for this community event. Other school’s which were represented by the children were Ecclesfield Comprehensive, Lound School, Grenoside and High Green Primary. The adult winner was Mr John Harrison of Ecclesfield and the children’s trophy was won by Violet Broomhead of Chapeltown who attends Coit School. Violet’s mum said the whole family had worked really hard with their entries, and were pleased with their trophy and awards and rosettes, including Mr Andy Broomhead, Violet’s dad, who came a close second to Mr Harrison. The family are looking forward to next year’s show so, as the saying goes, save the date – which is Saturday September 22 2018 – see you then - when the Forum hopes to beat this year’s success.

Forest schools scheme a hit with Royd Nursery Infant pupils

Mr Sly commented: “Forest Schools is hands on and enables the children to cover various areas of learning including physical development and communication and language. “It provides the children with lots of opportunities to manage a new learning environment at a level of risk comfortable to them.” Forest Schools is also a fantastic opportunity for parents and relatives to get involved with their children’s learning.

After participating in Forest Schools there is a huge difference evident in the children’s self-esteem and ability to assess risk and make their own decisions. The children and their family volunteers alike thoroughly enjoy their Forest Schools sessions and are enthusiastic and motivated throughout – whatever the weather!

How can you get fitter in just 20 minutes a week and without even breaking a sweat? Well, as it turns out, I wasn’t the only sceptic. Niri Patel, who brought fit20 to the UK and Stocksbridge, wasn’t a believer at first either. “I was invited over to Holland, where the fit20 gyms are very popular, to try it out. I thought it’d be a nice trip away at least and went over. “I was amazed at how effective it was though. I had done intensive workouts before but never like this. The children participate in a variety of activities from making mystical woodland potions to warm and cosy dens using only natural materials and resources sourced themselves from their outdoor environment.

The session is led by assistant head teacher Sean Sly and supported by the class teacher.

Kerry Jowitt, a parent of a child in Foundation Stage Two, offered her help during these sessions. She said: “I enjoyed everything about Forest Schools from being outdoors to watching my child learn new things with his friends. All I could see and think of for the rest of the day were the children’s faces and how much they enjoyed their morning!”

Each session begins with how to keep safe in the woodlands and how to navigate their way around the different obstacles they might face.

Over the four weeks, the children grow with confidence and are able to negotiate the woodlands at their own level of comfort; navigating their way around.

Each week the school invites parents to join in with the mornings and support the children, with which Royd has had an amazing response with lots of relatives volunteering to help during each session.

Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

A HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR

THE Second Halloween Spooktacular and Fireworks display is coming to town between 4pm and 10pm on Saturday October 28 at Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham. For less tricks and more treats this Halloween, grab your broomstick and fly on down to Wentworth Woodhouse for a spooktacular family event for all you bats and ghouls. As darkness falls on Saturday October 28, be prepared for double trouble as the cackle and crackle of Halloween and Bonfire Night collide into a ter-

rifyingly brilliant evening hosted by Little Wolf Events. Set on the West Front of Wentworth Woodhouse, dare you walk down the scary wooded walkway to kick things off with Disney’s Elsa and Belle who will be bringing magic to the stage with musical performances from 4.30pm. There’ll be a cauldron of prizes for the creepiest characters and costumes, with adults and children’s fancy dress competitions, plus pumpkin carving to create the scariest Jack O’Lantern.

Under the moonlight, there’ll be sights that will almost stop your heart with performances by a thrilling Michael Jackson tribute, or do the Time Warp again with the Rocky Horror Show. Along with a hocus pocus of live entertainment, there’ll be fairground rides by Roger Tuby in the grounds, with children’s tea cups, car carousel, plus a disco fever crazy wave and roller coaster for the bigger kids. So scream if you wanna go faster. And let’s not forget to finish off with a bang with two Galactic Fireworks displays; a quieter show around 7pm that won’t burst (or scare) little ear-

drums, followed by a show- stopping spectacle of sparks around 8.30pm that will leave you oohing and aahing. With food stalls, a beer tent and even a gin and cocktail bar for the mummies – and daddies - in the crowd, what more could you ask for in a frightfully great event. Tickets on sale now at www.littlewolfevents.co.uk or at the Post Office and Village Shop in Wentworth Village.

Local News

26th October 2017

www.looklocal.org.uk

Have a wildlife adventure this autumn with RSPB Old Moor NOW that the summer holidays are over and the kids are back at school, staff and volunteers at RSPB Old Moor nature reserve near Barnsley are keen to make sure that children continue to get close to nature. Teachers and parents looking for ways to engage children with wildlife are encouraged to plan fun, educational visits or take part in family-friendly events at Old Moor, with these activities also counting towards the RSPB’s ongoing ‘Wild Challenge’. John Clifton, Learning Officer at Old Moor said: “Young children are naturally drawn to wildlife and can’t get enough of exploring the outdoors. We appreciate that it’s not always easy for busy teachers or families to find the time to help nurture that interest, so we have created lots of great, educational events and experiences to bring the wonder of our natural world alive. Following a visit to Old Moor, they can then continue their adventure with our Wild Challenge.” The RSPB’s ambition is to help more children across the country reap the benefits of spending time outdoors, discovering the natural world around them. Research has shown that chil-

dren who have a healthy connection to nature are more likely to benefit from higher achievement at school, better mental and physical health, and develop stronger social skills. With the wildlife on people’s doorsteps becoming increasingly mysterious to them, the RSPB is calling on families to spend more time outside and reconnect with the nature that surrounds them. By taking part in a range of activities such as bug hunting and pond dipping, creating a hedgehog cafe and planting for wildlife, families can take their first steps on their own wild adventure. The RSPB’s Wild Challenge has 24 activities to choose from that will take families from exploring back gardens to towns, cities, woodlands and the coast. Schools can also take part and there are rewards for completing different levels. Find out more about school visits to Old Moor by visiting rspb.org.uk/schoolvisits and clicking on the Old Moor pin. Big win for War Memorial women

Narrow defeat for War Memorial

Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies produced a brave display to topple league leaders Leicester City WD 4-1 on their own turf and in doing so extended their winning run to six games in league and cup.

Leicester laid siege to the Oughtibridge goal in the second half and eventually found the net on 65 minutes through Gabriella Reid and it was game on with Wright called upon to make a couple of brave saves.

Oughtibridge got an all important third on 81 minutes, Mudge cleverly reading an under hit back pass, rounding the keeper and walking the ball into an empty net much to the relief of her team mates who rightly mobbed her.

War Memorials’ cause was not helped when Masson then got injured and could not carry on and Matt Harrison had to don the gloves.

Oughtibridge dominated possession in the first half and could have been further ahead than 2-0, Lauren Turner rounding the keeper for the first and Codi Melia teeing up Kathryn Mudge for the second.

Oughtibridge still looked dangerous on the break but a fine Leicester move on 77 minutes looked like the equaliser but the shot by Kenney cannoned off the post to safety.

Oughtibridge saw the game out after that and put the icing on the cake in injury time, Melia breaking free and squaring to Turner to slot home to make it 4-1.

The second half was very even with both sides again struggling to have any real efforts on goal. Ten minutes later Earl doubled their lead before Tom Fletcher pulled one back for the visitors.

But Leicester had won their opening five league games and they showed their own credentials late in the first half, Coran Wright being called upon to be beat behind a couple of efforts.

Moments later the ball was in the back of the net again by Reid but chalked off for a clear offside, with the home players appealing to the ref in desperation.

Next up is a home League Cup quarter final against Loughborough Students at the War Memorial on Sunday October 29, KO 2pm.

Royal Earl 2-1 Oughtibridge WMFC THE home side took the lead when a mistake by Masson gifted Brammer a tap in, Matt Harrison then went close and Chas Tunnard fired over.

Pigs hold out for five point away win

Knottingley 24-26 Stocksbridge STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby’s first team notched up their first away win of the season last Saturday, against a Knottingley side that finished last season in third position. The Pigs travelled with a strong team and were able to apply early forward pressure through powerful runs from Sam Whitaker, Gary Woodcock, Tom Spence and Ricky Rowett. This early pressure and controlled possession led to the first try of the game as the Stocksbridge pack pushed Konttingley back, before Adam Frith darted through a gap and fed Ricky Christopherson to dot the ball down just to the left of the posts. Frith converted to give an opening score of Stocksbridge 7 Knottingley 0. The second try of the game came from Knottingley, as the Stocksbridge centres fell for a missmove and left the home team’s stand off with an easy stroll-in try, which was converted to level the scores at 7-7.

However, the Pigs were soon back to doing what they do best by capitalising on their forward dominance and when Pete Newton fed Ryan Smith out wide, he made light work of the cover defence before feeding Big Sam Whitaker for a well deserved second Stocksbridge try. With time running out in the first half and the score at 14-7 to Stocksbridge, the home team opted to take a penalty kick instead of running the ball and although it was successful, it meant Stocksbridge went into the half time break 14-10 up. Stocksbridge started the second half strongly and again it was the forwards who laid the platform, before great work from Liam O’Leary and Ricky Christopherson got Joe Jones free and he rounded his opposite man to score under the posts with just three minutes of the half gone. Frith converted to push the lead out to 11 points, but once again the Pigs were guilty of lacking con-

centration and instead of consolidating their lead, they started to push the ball and make mistakes. Knottingley were gifted possession time after time and although Stocksbridge defended bravely, they couldn’t stop the home team’s stand off dancing through the line to score his second of the game, which was converted to bring Knottingley back to just four points behind. Clever work from Sam Whitaker at a line out led to Stocksbridge’s fourth try and a bonus point as Joe Smith, who’d impressed all game, bullied his way over in the right hand corner on 68 minutes. Frith missed the conversion, but the lead was now back out to nine points. Needing to score quickly and push the game, Knottingley threw everything at the Pigs and with five minutes left they made a break down the right, before squeezing in just to the side of the posts for their third try.

The conversion was successful, shortening the lead to just two points and with time running out, Knottingley had the chance to win the game with a long range penalty effort, which fortunately for the Pigs went wide and the game finished Knottingley 24 Stocksbridge 26. Speaking after the game, Assistant Coach Kev Brown said: “To come to Knottingley and leave with maximum points is a tremendous achievement and the lads should be really proud of their efforts today. We are starting to see fewer lapses in concentration and hopefully we’ll continue to see an improvement as the season unfolds.” The Pigs are at home to Wensleydale on Saturday, with a 3pm kick off and will be focusing on revenge for their cup defeat last week at the hands of the same opponents. As ever, your support is greatly appreciated.

Double defeat for Church PENISTONE Church suffered two defeats in a row this week, losing 3-2 to Bottesford and then 2-0 to Hemsworth Miners Welfare. After the Hemsworth game manager Ian Richards said: “It was an interesting one today, I thought our performance was a hundred times better than Wednesday against Bottesford so I was really pleased with that, by every single player and the subs. “Their reaction shows me I still have a changing room of the right lads and lads who are good enough to play at this level, who are one hundred percent committed to each other and this football club but the disappointing thing is we’ve lost and we’ve got no points we’ve conceded two goals and not scored. “That came down to us not taking our chances first half when we had really good chances and the better play.”

Injury-hit Steels battle to a point Cleethorpes 1-1 Stocksbridge PS STEELS travelled to Cleethorpes on Saturday with Cleethorpes one place above Stocksbridge in second place but six points in front.

Joe Lumsden had the Steels’ first real attempt on goal after good work down the right cutting in side shooting straight at keeper Richard Walton.

Steels manager Chris Hilton had to make several changes with flu hitting the club. Centre half Matt Reay was missing through suspension and the manager had to name himself on the bench to make up the numbers.

Minutes later midfielder Jack Poulton had a long range shot that just flew over the bar.

The home side had early chances through Alex Flett who fired over the bar and John Oglesby whose effort was on target but goalkeeper David Reay saved easily.

On 13 minutes the home side took the lead. Midfielder Danny North spotted Luke Mascall’s run into the box and he lifted the ball over the advancing David Reay. Joe Lumsden equalised on 25 minutes after he controlled the ball well inside the box and his powerful shot gave Walton

no chance in the Cleethorpes goal.

Steels had a good chance on 15 minutes when Brodie Lichfield did well down the Cleethorpes left but shot straight at the keeper when Lumsden looked to be in a better position.

The home side piled on the pressure for the rest of the half and had a good chance through Mark Cooper who fired just wide, but the Steels defence held firm and went into the break on level terms.

The home side were reduced to 10 men on 75 minutes when Danny North clearly called the referee a cheat and was given a straight red.

Steels almost took the lead just after half time when Joe Lumsden had a fierce shot that hit the post and bounced to safety.

A good point away at the second placed team for Stocksbridge, they now go on to face Belper on Saturday at the Look Local Stadium.

The home side had another good chance through Maskell but it was Lumsden who once again forced a good save from Richard Walton.
