Another fire in High Green A BLAZE at a property on Sheringham Close last Wednesday was just the latest in a string of fires in High Green with local residents suspecting a serial arsonist being responsible. The fire was deliberately started on Wednesday evening with a mattress wedged between a shed and a fence being set alight. The fire was spotted by a neighbour who saw the flames from his kitchen window. He called the fire brigade who eventually managed to get the incident under control but not before the shed, fence and a play house were seriously damaged. The resident of the house attacked told Look Local: “We were actually out when the fire started, we’re really lucky that the fire didn’t spread to the house. We did have some dogs at home when it happened.

A shed and decking were destroyed in the fire, the latest in a string of blazes in High Green

“Excellent”

“We had all kinds of things in the shed, including some camping stuff. A couple of gas canisters exploded and something flew out and smashed a window. There was a larger gas canister in there too but luckily

it was taken out before it went up.” Look Local reported on a number of fires in the are earlier in the year, including a uninhabited bungalow that was set fire to with a mattress. There have also been a number of wheelie bins set on fire. “I’m not sure if the mattress was already there or not, it’s just a nightmare really coming home and finding that. I’ll have to get a skip at the end of the week and clear it up the best I can. If it is one person doing all this they need to be stopped before someone gets killed. “We thought it might have been a personal attack at first which was really worrying but it seems it was just at random.” Have you been affected by fires in High Green? Contact Look Local on news@looklocal.org. uk with your story. A meeting has been called to discuss the arsons in the area. It takes place on Sunday October 15 at Angram Bank Pavilion from 5pm to 6pm. Everyone is invited.

Praise for offroad officers OFFICERS working on the forces dedicated off-road biking team have received a letter of thanks after reuniting a stolen bike with its right owner following one of their specialist operations.

His praise and thanks were humbly received by the trained team of officers, who had been carrying out targeted operations in hotspot areas throughout Thorpe Hesley in Sheffield.

In a message written to the officers, the owner of the bike said: “Can I say a massive thank you to you and your team for locating and returning my stolen bike.

The dedicated operations had been put in place after the area had been made a priority of targeted patrols, following feedback and reports from members of the local community about nuisance offroad bikes in the area.

“Thanks again and keep up the great work” The bike taken was not only of high value but also had a sentimental meaning to the owner after he had used inheritance, given to him by a member of his family who had recently passed away, to purchase the bike in their memory.

At around 11.50am on Sunday October 8, a cyclist was travelling downhill along Carr Lane, away from the A629 towards Broad Oak Lane, when the rider of the bike appears to have mounted a grass verge before losing control and falling in to the road. The cyclist was subsequently involved in a collision with a black Landrover Freelander, travelling in the opposite direction.

The collision happened close to the entrance of Carr Lane Farm.

The cyclist, a 49-year-old man from Barnsley, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Officers investigating the collision want to hear from anyone who saw what happened, and has not yet been in touch, to contact them. If you can help, please call 101 quoting incident number 418 of 8 October 2017.

Inspector Darren Johnson, who leads the off-road team, commented on the thanks received. He said: “The bike held a lot of sentimental value to the owner, who had not even had the chance to ride it before it had been stolen.

The bike was quickly seized by the officers, who reunited it with the owner the following day.

CHOIR CRASH REMEMBERED WITH CONCERT A SERVICE and a charity concert will mark the 70th anniversary of a tragedy that took the lives of nine people when a coach carrying members, relatives and friends of Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir crashed at terrific speed in Holmfirth.

The choir was on its way to the Holmfirth Musical Competition on Saturday October 18 1947, but as the coach passed the Bay Horse Inn at Hade Edge the brakes failed and the vehicle careered out of control for nearly two miles down the steep hill into Holmfirth. Three passengers managed to jump clear as the young driver struggled in vain to keep control of the coach which ploughed into a two-storey warehouse in the centre of Holmfirth. The building collapsed on top of the coach. There followed a brave two-hour rescue of the 40 people trapped inside the crushed vehicle. Irish labourers brought in to work on Digley reservoir were having a drink in the Shoulder of Mutton opposite the scene of the crash in Victoria Square. They dashed out of the pub, frantically clawing at rubble to reach the stricken passengers. The 5th Stalybridge Scouts, visiting Holmfirth for the day, joined in the rescue as did townsfolk and choir members and friends who had travelled by car, putting their own lives at risk as other parts of the building threatened to cave in. The dying and injured were taken to the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital in Holmfirth and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Eight people died that dreadful day and the toll rose to nine with the death in hospital two days later of Nora Firth, 51, whose son Arnold, a choir member, was one of the 24 people injured, some seriously. There are sons and other relatives of crash victims still singing in Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir, among them Raymond, Graham and Alf Pearson whose father Alfred, 43, a father of nine, died in the crash. Later that day at 7.30pm Hade Edge Band and the choir will give a concert at Holmfirth Parish Church (Holy Trinity) to mark remembrance day and the disaster which made national headlines and left a deep and lasting impression on the communities of Stocksbridge and district and Holmfirth. Proceeds will go to Friends of Holme Valley Hospital and the Royal British Legion. Choir secretary Rob Firth, whose uncle John Firth died in the crash and whose late father Eric was seriously injured, said: “We were so pleased that Hade Edge Band suggested the concert. It gives us another opportunity to thank the people of Holmfirth and the medical staff of the Holme Valley Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for all their wonderful help on that awful day. The choir was struggling to re-establish itself after the war and the crash could have finished it off. “Instead, the tragedy made us stronger and we are thriving today with 70 members, 70 years after the disaster and 83 years after we were formed.” Rob’s mother Ann, who died last year aged 88, was a nurse who tended the injured and dying at the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital. Romance blossomed amid tragedy and the young refugee from the Baltic state of Estonia married the injured chorister who worked in the family bakery business in Stocksbridge, three years later. Among the items the choir will sing at the concert is Love Could I Only Tell Thee, the test piece they would have sung that fateful day if tragedy had not intervened. MINISTER DECISION COULD BRING PLANS CLOSER TO REALITY THE saga of a proposed new ‘village’ next to Bolsterstone and Deepcar took a new twist last week and brings closer a planning application for over 90 new dwellings at Royd Farm off Hollin Busk Lane, Deepcar. John Hesketh, chairman of Upper Don Action Group, campaigning against the new development, and a former city planning chairman explained: “Although it’s a bit technical, the basics are simple.

“Against the advice of Sheffield City Council and scores of local people, the Minister’s department has decided that a rigorous Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) is not required in this case. “This means the applicant has one less hurdle to clear. In our judgement at UDAG, it also means a planning application will be sooner rather than later. ” Plans for the development scheduled for green field land first surfaced back in January via Hallam Land Management, an arm of Sheffield construction company Henry Boot. The 93+ dwelling scheme is earmarked for fields next to Royd Farm between Bolsterstone and Deepcar. The green field site is next to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. Following a public meeting called by community group Upper Don Action Group in March, objections flooded into Sheffield City Council’s planning dept. The result is that the

Council decided that any planning application will require a full EIA. But that has now been overturned by Sajid Javid’s department. The official statement from Sajid Javid’s department for Communities and Local Government concludes, “Therefore, having considered all of the information provided, the Secretary of State concludes that EIA is not required for this proposal.” It’s not yet clear when the developer, Hallam Land Management, will submit a planning application? Andrew Barton, who lives across the road from the land, commented: “The problem residents have in fighting this proposal is that all of us are in the hands of the developer. They will decide when to submit an application. Those of us most affected will simply have to wait, but the Minister’s decision does mean the planning application for Royd Farm village is likely to arrive in the next few months.” John Hesketh added: “What residents and community groups want now is to see the proposal in detail and how the developer believes the considerable environmental hurdles can be cleared. “At UDAG, we don’t believe that the environmental problems for such a large housing scheme on farmland are easily solved, whatever the implications of the Minister’s judgement. UDAG will be campaigning against the proposed development when a planning application is eventually submitted.”

Fundraising efforts continue at High Green Miners’ Welfare Hall THE series of fundraising events at the Miners’ Welfare Hall continues with the tea dance on Sunday October 15, 3pm to 6pm. The well-known duo Toffee Music will be singing and playing hits of the 20s, 30s and 40s which can be danced to or just enjoyed from your tea dance table, and Vic Shepherd and John Bowden will be playing music for a range of couple dances, including waltzes. Donations and, hopefully, proceeds from the sale of Toffee Music’s CDs, will be going to the cancer charities which Toffee Music support - they have already raised almost £39,000 for Weston Park Hospital since January 2012. The following Sunday, October 22, is a showcase folk event on the theme of work and industry, which will be raising money for the British Stammering Association, with October 22 being International Stuttering Awareness Day, and Chapel Green Advice Centre, for which the September Showcase raised £60. As always, singers, musicians and audience are very welcome! More information about the work of the British Stammering Association and the help, advice and support they can offer can be found at www.stammering.org.uk.

Bumford Heating Ltd. Unit 2d, Shortwood Court, Shortwood Business Park, Hoyland, Barnsley, S74 9LH.

The last two dates this autumn, November 19 showcase and December 15 Christmas Tea Dance, will be raising funds for a number of local good causes, including St. Saviour’s Project on Greengate Lane. Singing and dancing are good for us, but you don’t need to take an active part if you don’t want to - just enjoy the entertainment and make a small donation to help a good cause! Cerebral Palsy Day fundraiser OVER a thousand pounds has been raised for a Sheffield charity with a series of events across the city marking World Cerebral Palsy Day on Friday October 6. The fundraising activity was in aid of Paces, the High Green charity and school, and will help their work to support children, adults and families with cerebral palsy and other motor disorders. A coffee morning was held on the Paces Campus itself with almost £800 raised by the sale of raffle tickets and a cakes and craft sale organised by Leaping the Void, the charity’s group for young adults with cerebral palsy. Irwin Mitchell, whose Sheffield office is supporting Paces throughout 2017, held a teddy bear’s picnic with games and cake for staff, and raised over £100.

While other fundraising events took place across Sheffield - including customers and staff at TSB’s Meadowhall branch who held a tombola, a coffee morning took place at Switalskis Solicitors and there was a cake sale at the Co-op Food Store at High Green. Dr Spencer Pitfield, Chief Executive of Paces, said: “Paces is proud to be a national leader in the support of children and adults who are living with cerebral palsy so we are delighted so many of Sheffield’s businesses and organisations joined with us to mark World Cerebral Palsy Day. “The hundreds of pounds raised will boost our work at Paces School to give children the best start in life and our programmes and support networks that support adults to transform their lives.”

Timing is key to the Fit20 programme. You do each exercise very slowly for two minutes, usually counting to 10 when flexing the muscle, then again to 10 as you come back.

After two minutes of this, you hold for 10 seconds before finishing the exercise. I’m told that the rest period will decrease as I continue my programme, making it more intensive. I was shown my progress chart and some of the results, available for me to see in black and white, have been surprising. I definitely feel stronger and the weights have been gradually increased each time I go and I think I’ve lost a bit of weight – I certainly fit in some of my T-shirts that I didn’t before. So far it’s been a positive experience and I look forward to continuing with my progress! Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Your Letters Deer remains Editor, It’s surprising that police and the Environment Agency (poaching, trespassing) and the RSPCA (cruelty to animals - as in injured) were not interested in looking further into this. However, unless they have died out, there are, or were, wild red deer in the area on the estate about Wharncliffe Crags. I remember seeing them lying in the bracken there, many years ago. More recently, a small herd - seven or so - were seen crossing the main SheffieldStocksbridge road in the woodlands between Wharncliffe Side and Deepcar, in the last bad winter - 15 years or so ago. There are, of course, domesticated (farmed) red deer much nearer than Scotland, easily seen from the M1! Geoff Stevens, Oughtibridge.

FOHB are totally opposed to development on this green space which is specifically identified in the Sheffield Core Strategy 2009 as Open Space that is not to be built upon.

Your

Dear Look Local, I enjoyed reading K Godley’s letter about Henry VIII and democracy.

We aree unlik er th any om gy !

There are some arguments for leaving the EU. There are some against. The thing is it doesn’t matter that much what either of us think because the people needed to actually sort out the laws, trade, customs, Irish border, citizenship all with massive IT programs are not old chaps like us (I’m assuming- sorry if K is for Karen) but a young vibrant and varied lot who like being able to live and work anywhere in Europe. The task is on a war effort scale but we haven’t got an army. I’ll put a devalued plastic tenner on us still being in the EU in ten years.

Valley React

In February 2017 there were 150 comments posted on the Sheffield City Council planning website objecting to this proposal and insisting that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) needed to be completed by the developer, DLP Planning Ltd.

Valley React Community Project members had a fantastic time at the Stocksbridge Legion Club on Wednesday September 27.

In April, Sheffield City Council stated that an EIA was required. In September, the developers appealed to the Government’s Department for Communities and Local Government, based in Birmingham, for a screening direction on the matter from The Secretary of State. Friends of Hollin Busk (FOHB), a local residents group, became aware of this at short notice in September and made contact with the Planning Casework Unit in Birmingham and were able to submit a document stating their case as to why they believe an EIA is necessary. FOHB have just been notified that the Secretary of State has ruled that EIA is not required for this proposal. A large number of reports have been submitted by the developer in support of their case and are available for public view on the Sheffield City Council Planning website application number 17/00142/EIA. The next step is likely to be a submission for planning permission by the developer. FOHB are monitoring the situation and will keep you informed. The general public will be able to submit comments on the Planning website or write in by post.

Stocksbridge PS 1-4 Atherton Collieries STEELS crashed out of the Buildbase FA Trophy, losing 4-1 to Evo-Stik North side Atherton Collieries. The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes through Christian Holt, and increased their lead 15 minutes later after Liam McFadyen tried to pass back to goalkeeper David Reay, who was wrong

footed and the ball found the corner of the net. Steels started the second half the stronger of the two teams, but the game was effectively over when Iain Howard scored on 85 minutes. Ben Hardcastle increased the visitors lead on 90 minutes. Luke Mangham coming on as a

second half substitute scored his debut goal for the Steels in extra time. Atherton where the better of the two teams on the day and deserved their win. Steels are in Sheffield Senior Cup action on Wednesday when they travel to Sandy Lane to face Worksop Town.

Golf Club news STOCKSBRIDGE Golf Club’s Saturday September 30 competition was one of the team events which take place throughout the year. The Joint Captain’s Scramble is for teams of three or four golfers where every player gets to contribute to the overall score. Normally the teams consist of golfers of varying abilities which is great for camaraderie. Each player has to have at least four drives to play from, so it can become quite tense but it is also great fun. The team pick out which is the best drive and elect to play from that spot. There are often great combined scores. In third place came the team consisting of Steve Page, Neil Rattican and Peter Elliott with a score of 55.2 which is almost 10 under par. In second place came Dave Bertram, Pete Sheerin, Tony Greenwood and Brian Straw on 53.4 (12 under par). The winning team with a terrific 14 under par was James Walton, Mick Hulbert, John Slodyczak and Andy Taylor. What a great score. A very small field competed on Sunday for the Pro’s Prize. Neil Rattican must have got over Saturday the best with a creditable 33 points to win. In second place came James Bell and third was Nick Wood. Both Neil and James are recent and very welcome additions to the Club membership and already making their mark in competitions.

Also on Sunday saw the Ladies Autumn Trophy. In third place came Margaret Pearson with 30 points. In second place was Ladies Captain Kath Busfield on 34 points. The clear winner, with 37 points, was Sue Hill. Well done to all on a showery and windy day. This weather seems to be the norm at Stocksbridge. Two Dragons competitions took place on Wednesday with three finalists competing in the Master Putter. These players qualified through comps throughout the year. In third place was Dragon’s captain, Les Wright, with a nett score of 71. Second place went to Dave Jones with a nett 68. The winner with a two under par 64 was Mick Bellamy. The rest of the Dragons took part in a Three Club Challenge where each player is allowed a putter and two other clubs of their choice. It is ideally called a challenge as getting around Stocksbridge golf course with just three clubs is a real trial. In third place was Trevor Newton with 31 points, in second place on 32 points came Frank Milnes but the well deserved first prize went to Charlie Dale. There was no Ladies competition and only a few took part in the Gents Midweek Stableford. First place in Division Two went to Aiden Taylor. Division One winner was Chris Dale.

Cooke breaks own record GARETH Cooke broke his own club senior marathon record with a time of 2:37.49, finishing in ninth position at the Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday. Cooke ran a superbly judged race to move through the field in a metronomic fashion. He regularly trains over 100 miles per week and this performance is the latest in s string of impressive races from the Penistone athlete. Rapid Rob Lees finished fifth overall and first V40 at the night time Brighouse 10k road race on Sunday. Andrew Heppenstall and Martin Ball finished fourth and fifth respectively at the Tissington Trail Race, run in scenic conditions on a former railway route from Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

They finished in 89:09 and 89:28, with Ball finishing first V45. Jill Carlton completed the course in 103:33. It was a mixed day for those taking place at the Langdale Horseshoe Fell race on Saturday, run over 12.5 miles with 4,600 feet of ascent. There was a strong north-westerly wind, gusty showers and wet grass and rocks to contend with. First back was Majka Kunicka in 3:11.13, finishing fifth lady overall, with Ian Charlesworth and Paul Fryers also completing the course, Chris Charlesworth lost his way in the fog, fell and dislocated a finger, ending up in A&E after finishing the course in 4:15.24.

Hawks under 16s reign supreme Sheffield Hawks 54-0 Queensbury THE last match of the season is often viewed as a “dead rubber” in tennis terms. Hawks, secure in mid table, faced a Queensbury side that has often been their nemesis in the past. However a season’s best performance saw the Hawks utterly dominate the match, defensively and offensively, to such an extent that Queensbury could not score. The first 15 minutes saw Hawks pinned in their own half. Queensbury attacked and attacked but a consistently aggressive and strong defensive response saw the storm weathered. In particular huge hits by Reueben Kateregga, Will Burns and virtually the entire squad left Queensbury huffing and puffing with nowhere to go. When the ball eventually came to Sheffield they scored with their first play, Harry Edgar scoring under the posts after a slick move out wide. From the kick off, the ball was given to Bailey Thompson who, with no apparent space available, slipped past 6 flailing attempts to stop him and scored after a 70 metre run. At the end of the first half Max Blackburn scored his de-

but try, wriggling through from 10 metres out on a fifth tackle to score a well-deserved debut try. The second half saw the first half excellence exceeded. Thompson added another beauty from deep, harry Scott scored a second half hat-trick, including a candidate for try of the season after a kick through and chase. Reuben Kateregga scored two breath-taking tries in succession after excellent build up play, especially after perfectly timed passes from Harry Scott. Will Burns scored a welldeserved final try, bursting through the centre and accelerating away to score as he had threatened to do all match. Pat Wakefield and Tom Griffiths distributed well in the middle throughout the match and made the game look as straightforward and simple as any they have played this year. Wakefield scored twelve from the boot and the match ended with Hawks in the opposition in goal area pushing for yet another score. This was a thing of beauty to watch.

Pigs get better of Baildon A MASTERFUL second half performance by scrum half Adam Frith was the catalyst for a 20-5 victory in favour of Stocksbridge RUFC at Coal Pit Lane on Saturday. Luke Birch made his first start for the club’s first team this season and an injury to Ben Westby meant Jack Spencer started at fly half in a game Stocksbridge desperately needed to win if they were to pull themselves away from the bottom of the table. The first half delivered a dour performance from both sides, with the ball proving difficult to control and keep hold of. There were flashes of intent from the home team, as Birch made some strong runs and Tom Spencer broke the line a couple of times, but the only points of the half came via a solitary penalty from Adam Frith to give a half time score of Stocksbridge 3 Baildon 0. The half time break gave the Pigs a chance to regroup and with the sound of coaches Kev Brown and Mick Shouler still ringing in their ears, they kicked off and immediately went on the attack, as Pete Newton caught the restart, before offloading to Ben Brown to take the ball within 10 metres of the Baildon line.

Pic: Pete Revitt Stocksbridge 20-5 Baildon

The Pigs looked certain to score as they probed the away team’s defence, but a stray pass found only the floor and the lightning quick Baildon centre fly hacked the ball on and beat the covering defence to score a try in the left corner to give a shock score-line of 3-5 to the away team.

The partisan home crowd were quick to show their concerns, but they needn’t have worried, as the Pigs promptly marched their opposition down the pitch and set up camp once more deep in Baildon territory.

Ben Brown was given the President’s Man of the Match trophy and Adam Frith scooped the Supporter’s award. Stocksbridge are away on cup duty at Wensleydale this Saturday, kick off 3pm.

A scrum on 47 minutes gave Stocksbridge an ideal platform from which to attack and a neat pick up by number eight, Ben Brown saw him bust the line, before offloading to Ricky Rowett, who scored under the posts. Frith converted to regain the lead for Stocksbridge. Stocksbridge now started to hold onto the ball much better and Ricky Christopherson was unlucky to have his effort ruled out for a double movement after Liam O’Leary and Luke Birch had both gone close, but Frith was not to be denied soon after, as he spotted some lazy defending around the ruck and darted in for a well deserved try. The conversion was missed, but Frith’s effort gave Stocksbridge a commanding 15-5 lead. Baildon were now offering little in the way of resistance and a scrum just inside the away team’s half was the staging post for the next try, as Frith once more pierced the line with a dazzling 30 yard break, before delivering an inch-perfect pass to winger Joe Jones, who scored out on the right. Baildon never recovered from this third try and although they spent the last 10 minutes in the Stocksbridge third, they never really looked like scoring and the game finished Stocksbridge 20 Baildon 5.
