Vandals target church again
St Mary’s Catholic Church High Green has again been targeted by vandals. Last year it was the graveyard and church hall; now it is the church windows.
A traffic collision involving a bus on Langsett Rd on the morning of Tuesday 19 September caused commuter chaos. The bus Blocked both blue and Yellow route tram services suspending services between Shalesmoor and Middlewood/Malin bridge.
During the hours of 10.30pm Wednesday 13th September and 7.30am the next morning 3 memorial stained glass windows were damaged/destroyed by vandals. This is the second time in two months; on the first occasion a stone was put through the stained glass of one window

The memorial windows were dedicated at the beginning of the 1900’s just a few years after the church was built in 1886. Family members, who still attend the church, are devastated at the destruction of the memorial windows of their ancestors. Two crystal vases were also smashed with water and flowers
being strewn over the pews in church. They pulled the first aid box of a window sill and scattered the contents over the car park. These have now to be replaced too. Thankfully there was no damage to the statue of the Sacred Heart. If anyone has any information regarding the vandalism please contact the police quoting crime number K-121129-2017, this can be done anonymously. The question everyone at th church and in the community is asking regarding this damage is WHY!!!!!!!

Swimmer conquers the English channel
Wendy Figures, 51, a swimming instructor from Sheffield has completed a truly awesome feat of swimming the English channel from England to France. Crossing the channel can take various amounts of time depending on the choice of transport; 30 minutes by tunnel or hovercraft, 1 hour by ferry, 2 and a half hours by hydrogen balloon, Jean-Pierre Francios Blanchard and John Jeffries in 1785, or; 13 hours and 45 minutes swimming! Many of you may know Wendy from the Sheffield Swim School in Grenoside or as a swimming instructor at Stocksbridge leisure centre where she has taught many a child/toddler/adult their first experience in a swimming pool. Wendy completed the crossing on the morning of the 8th August swimming, an incredible 21 miles in the busiest shipping lane in the world and water full of jellyfish. Wendy recalls her truly inspirational day “I started at 9.55 pm on the evening of 7 August having been waiting for suitable weather for eight days. I knew I wouldn’t get a straight line as the tide had turned and I was setting out on a spring tide - that means that there’s a greater volume of water flooding into the channel at one time so, bigger waves and a greater sideways push. As I’d already been waiting for 8 days - I couldn’t wait around any longer for better weather/tides. Fortunately, it was a full moon so, swimming through the night was quite pleasant once I’d got into the swim. The reflection on the water was beautiful and the majority of the night swim was quite tranquil. That’s not to say that I didn’t have a few demons in my head as I was ready to quit 3.5 hours into the swim when I kept thinking of
the sheer magnitude of the swim. When I sorted out my head - it became more enjoyable for a few hours of moonlit swimming followed by a swim into the most beautiful sunrise. I was roughly half way across by that point. I quite enjoyed seeing the ferries and the massive shipping containers - I had a boat by my side with a very experienced pilot who was constantly in communication with the coastguard and others ships so, as safe as could be whilst swimming the channel. I had a brilliant support crew on the boat monitoring my swimming, feeding me snacks and drinks to keep my energy up (I had to tread water to feed as the rules state that you can’t touch the boat or anyone else). However, the water got a bit choppy and tiredness started to set in so, the second half was a bit of a washing machine swim. After a lot of complaining, a lot of effort and a few jelly fish stings, I finally arrived on a French slipway on 8 August, 13 hrs and 45 minutes after I started. Completely shattered and ready to cry but a champagne reception was awaiting me and I just about had enough energy left to stand on dry land and raise a smile & a glass. I’m 51 yrs old and wanted the world record for over 50’s but I didn’t get anywhere near it. Not because I didn’t train hard enough or that I wasn’t good enough. Because the sea is in charge!! It was a huge learning curve and much, much harder than I had anticipated. I am very proud to call myself a channel swimmer and there aren’t many of us but a few channel swimmers also come from Sheffield”

Tennis is not only a sport to keep all ages fit and active but works on hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and body coordination. Tennis also teaches young people important life skills like teamwork, sharing and taking turns. It will also show them the importance of keeping calm in the face of disappointment, and of enjoying the game itself rather than simply focusing on winning (although this is nice!)

Stannington Story Festival goes into its third appearance on Saturday 30th September with what organisers are confidently predicting will be its strongest line-up yet. Two experienced and highly professional storytellers, one award-winning poet and one award-winning author head the bill. A choir led by local folk legend Jon Boden and several other spoken-word contributors complete the bill. This free event takes place in Stannington Park and runs from 1.30 till 5.30 pm.

AUTHOR: Samantha Priestley will be discussing her novel A Bad Winter The festival will present storyteller Eden Ballantyne performing works by the Brothers Grimm - in his own fashion, prize-winning poet James Caruth whose latest collection Narrow Water is due to be published by Salzburg University Press this autumn, award-winning author Samantha Priestley discussing her novel A Bad Winter that was published this month, Buxton Poetry Festival organiser Adrian Tissier and local comedy whirlwind Jan Flamank. Dungworth Choir, recently formed by much-respected folk musician and recording artist Jon Boden of Bellowhead and The Remnant Kings fame, in one of their first public performances, will provide a musical interlude, with a number of other contributors completing the bill. Bob Mynors continued, “One of the hits of our first two years was Carmel Page with her troupe of flying teddy bears. This year,
she cannot be with us as she will be flying herself - literally at the time of the festival - en route to Australia to attend her son’s wedding. But we are busy negotiating with the bears and have high hopes of presenting the world’s first ever flying teddy bears tribute act. “There is of course a serious purpose behind the Stannington Story Festival. Three years ago, at the end of September 2014, Sheffield City Council ceased to be responsible for managing Stannington Library. Along with fifteen others across the city, we are now managed and operated by volunteers, still with some financial and material support from the council, but entirely responsible for all that goes on in our library. We use the festival as our way of marking that anniversary, and focusing people’s attention on the achievements we have been able to make in those years.”

Sheffield’s Super Sporting Sunday Excitement is building for what promises to be a great day of sport in Sheffield on Sunday 24 September. The day starts with the Asda Foundation’s 10k race, with more than 4,000 runners taking part, followed by the city’s first football derby in five years. Thousands of people are expected to attend and Sheffield City Council is advising them to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys. The 10k race, which returns to Sheffield for its second year, will start at 9.30 am on Arundel Gate. Runners will race along Ecclesall Road and around the edges of Endcliffe Park, before continuing along Riverdale Road, down Brocco Bank and back onto Ec-
clesall Road for the finish at Arundel Gate. The race is expected to finish around 11.30 am and there will be some local road closures. Signs are already up advising drivers. Football fans, travelling to Hillsborough for the 1.15pm kick off between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, are advised that some roads may still be closed when travelling to the match. Extra trams will be running to the Hillsborough ground and fans are advised to allow extra time to travel and take public transport where possible. CHRIS JOHNSON: Sheffield charity calls for more understanding of rare disease A Sheffield charity is calling for more awareness and understanding of the rare heart and lung condition pulmonary hypertension, after its research revealed it has a severe impact on quality of life. According to a survey by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK), based in Chapeltown, 60 per cent of patients think the serious condition has a ‘major impact’ on their overall quality of life. The Living with PH Survey revealed that emotional wellbeing, relationships with family and friends and finances are all affected by the life-limiting disease, which causes high blood pressure in the blood vessels connecting the heart and lungs. PH is very rare, affecting just 7,000 out of 64 million people in the UK. Chris Johnson, from Wombwell in Barnsley, was diagnosed 13 years ago and is treated at the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital - one of just seven specialist treatment centres in the UK.
Chris, 54, said: “Having PH is frustrating, because I can’t do things I used to do. For example, I used to like to go to the gym a lot, but now I can’t even walk up inclines. I’ve lost contact with a lot of people I knew. I know it’s not the same for everybody but when you get poorly, some people seem to move out of the way. “My family still don’t understand my illness and that does make things hard. I don’t look ill, and that doesn’t help in terms of understanding. You can’t explain it to anyone and it’s frustrating trying to get through to people.”

AUTUMN COLOUR IN THE GARDEN
LOOKING AFTER YOUR GARDEN AND HOME
October is one of the most colourful times of the year. Many flowers are still blooming and the leaves on trees and shrubs are beginning to change to fiery colours like red, yellow and orange. It’s a good time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials as the soil still has some warmth and will help to get them established and an excellent time to plant conifers. National Conifer Week, which takes place in October, highlights the many benefits of
growing conifers in your garden. Conifers are cone-bearing seed plants and include cedars, cypresses, firs, junipers, larches, pines, spruces, and yews. Whilst being practical and useful, conifers are also visually stunning and can transform a garden into

Gardening Feature something quite magnificent. They are a wonderful way of adding colour and shape to your outdoor space especially as many conifers change colour throughout the year. With several hundred varieties of conifers available in the UK, there is one to suit every type of garden, and they are easy to look after. They need good drainage and water to get them established,
but once growing will need little attention as they are pretty disease resistant and maintenance free. In addition to conifers, another way to bring colour to the garden at this time of year is with Autumn bedding plants. One of the most exciitng group of plants to brighten up any part of the garden is Heuchera. Native
to North America where their roots, know as alumroot, have been used in traditional medicines for years, Heuchera were originally grown for their flowers – dainty spikes of red, pink and white bells. They carry their plume like flowers high above their crowns of leaves, but gardeners are now mainly interested in their foliage which comes in a variety of colours.
Heucheras grow in full or partial sun, in well composted soil and are fairly pest resistant. They can be established as ground cover in many garden situations like under trees where grass could struggle. Tigers roar to the top SHEFFIELD secured their spot at the top of the SGB Championship table with wins over Edinburgh and Ipswich on Thursday night. It was a magnificent night for the Window Centre Tigers, who enjoyed double delight on a hectic evening to build up an unassailable lead at the summit. However on Saturday they were unable to add to their Championship points tally as they slipped to a 50-40 defeat at Berwick. While captain Kyle Howarth, who dropped just one point from five rides, and Danish ace Lasse Bjerre continued their own individual fine form, they didn’t receive sufficient back-up from their team mates as they fell to a second successive loss on the road. But Window Centre Tigers copromoter Peter Mole pinpointed
the absence of No.1 Josh Grajczonek as a major factor in their latest defeat and insists there is no need to panic.
in the season and this was their last home fixture of the year which they were desperate to win and full credit to them.
“I think we definitely missed Josh for sure with him riding in the Premiership Riders’ Championship in Manchester and despite Steve Worrall’s best efforts, he was unfortunately unable to score the points everyone knows he is capable of,” Mole said.
“There’s no need to panic though; we’ve booked our place in the play-offs already, we’re assured of top spot too and we just need to get a fully fit side back in time for the business part of the year.”
“I thought Kyle was excellent once again as was Lasse and it was good to see Josh Bates back from injury too. “We had a few engine problems tonight and that hampered our scoring power, at reserve in particular, unfortunately. “So we need to make sure that is rectified quickly in time for our next meeting on Monday. “We can’t take anything away from Berwick though; they’ve come into a bit of form late on
The Tigers are back in action at Owlerton on Monday when Redcar are the visitors (7.45). BERWICK 50: Kevin Doolan 13, Dany Gappmeaier 10+1, Ryan Douglas 8+3, David Howe 8, Ashley Morris 7+3, Alfie Bowtell 4+3, Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen R/R. SHEFFIELD 40: Kyle Howarth 14, Lasse Bjerre 12, Josh Bates 5+1, Steve Worrall 5, Jan Graversen 2+1, Georgie Wood 2, Todd Kurtz R/R.

Hawks soar Sheffield Hawks 10 Hull Wyke 6
Sheffield Hawks made it three wins out of three after the summer break with a hard fought defensive victory over a tough Hull Wyke team. Hawks dominated much of the match, scored two good tries and hit Hull very hard with some monstrous tackles. Neither side could break the defensive shackles in the second half although Hawks dominated to such an extent that 80% of the half was spent camped in Hulls half. The match itself was very disjointed and Hawks natural attacking fluency was stalled by big tackles and persistent offside play. However Tom Griffith and Pat Wakefield both scored good tries after effective drives from the stand in first and second rows. Hull scored one try after a dubious offside turnover. Without this bizarre intervention it is doubtful Hull would have crossed the line at any point in the game.
At no point in the match could Hull break free. Reuben Kateregga and Will Burns both tackled with ferocity in the middle of the line, frequently driving back or bowling over players with aggressive, hard hitting. With a stand in front and second row Hawks always struggled to clear themesleves enough space and time in the middle but it is to their great credit that centres and backs stood up to support our forwards. Will Burns played well throughout, running hard in attack and defence and symbolised the “they shall not cross” attitude of the team. As Hull tired Hawks control of the game was total. But for four last ditch tackles Will Burns, Bailey Thompson, Joe Littlewood and Harry Scott could all have scored in the last five minutes. Harry Scott was again excellent in running hard lines and being aggressive in contact. Hawks ended the match in control, as they had been throughout the game.

Age 6 to 9 years at 10.00 to 11.30 Age 10 to 12 years at 11.30 to 13.00 The course is free but prior booking is essential as places are limited The countdown is on to Magna’s fourth annual Oktoberfest in Rotherham. The German-themed event returns to Rotherham in just two months’ time for a night full of beer, food and entertainment on Saturday 7 October. Over the last three years, more than 4,000 people have attended Oktoberfest at Magna, which is thought to be the biggest of its kind in the region. Numbers are expected to be high again in 2017. Drinks will be poured in pint-sized steins – traditional German beer mugs – and hungry guests can feast on frankfurters and other German-themed food. A DJ and disco will keep everyone dancing, and to add to the Munich style, revellers are encouraged to dress in Bavarian costume. Becky Gill, sales manager at Magna, said: “Magna’s huge open spaces make it the perfect venue for revellers to come and joins us for one big party. “Oktoberfest is always a real highlight on our calendar and we can’t wait to bring Bavaria to Rotherham once again.”
A shuttle bus service will run from Rotherham and Sheffield to Magna throughout the evening. And for those who choose not to drink, plenty of car parking is available. Entry-only tickets for Oktoberfest are £5, with beer and food tokens available on the night. Bierkeller packages, which include entry, drinks and a meal, start from £15. For more information, or to book tickets, visit www.magna.co.uk or call 01709 723118. As well as organising its own events, Magna, which is housed in the former Templeborough steelworks near junction 34 of the M1, hosts corporate events for brands including Mercedes, Royal Mail, Kia Motors and HSBC and boasts a science visitor attraction.
Bowling Club secure £3,000 of funding Millhouse Green Bowling Club is set to benefit from £3,000 of S106 money, secured by Barnsley Council from a local developer. The funding will be used to improve the sites footpaths and spectator facility, allowing a greater number of people to access the club. Work is due to start on the improvements in October. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “It’s great
to see S106 money being spent in such a positive way.
“The council is working hard to improve opportunities for residents to increase their participation in sports and physical activity. “The improvements will help to enhance the club and provide long term sustainability of a much-used community asset within the local area.”
Section 106 funding is money that developers of larger sites pay to the council to reduce the impact of the development. Developers sign an S106 agreement as part of their planning permission. This is a legal document that specifies what the money is spent on and where. The money can be spent on projects such as improving community facilities, providing affordable housing and improving landscaping.

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Your Letters BUS TRAMS AND LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE
Bus - the end
Further to Steven Moxon’s letters (14th Sept) the fact that Stagecoach bus and tram are separate companies is no reason to accept that what may be a great concept is in fact a local joke. The fact is that both companies have simply hidden behind this to avoid solving the issue and the parent company could not care less about customers. I wonder if your readers are aware that to help leave connecting passengers stranded that the tram driver is allowed to leave up to a minute early.I was informed of this fact when I complained that trams were regularly leaving Middlewood early (the clocks on the Passenger Information Displays are the only thing that works)
You must be very short of friends if you deride, somewhat nastily at times, people that you do not no who disagree with you. Many of your assumptions regarding my last letter are just that, assumptions to suit your case.
Supertram in particular have demonstrated a thorough lack of understanding on the subject of customer service one only has to look at their inaction over the Passenger Information Displays that ever since they were introduced more than 2 years ago have never worked properly and regularly provide rubbish (they are the responsibility of the PTE but any company with an ounce of common sense would demand they either work or are turned off until they work). The PTE argue that they may sometimes have the right information but the problem is no one can rely on them - So bad are they that the PTE or Stagecoach have had the brilliant idea that when they have no idea of where the tram is the show the timetabled time on the display - yes this means when there is a cancellation the timetable time will be shown but there will be no tram There is a bit of good news on the horizon however as Matt Davies the local Stagecoach bus MD has pledged to do something about the problem and I will leave him to explain his proposal and timescales but all I can say is that I hope Supertram buy in to his solution and start to train their senior management in the mysteries of customer service. Buses at the double
Hi Steven, or is it Steve,
You, at times, also talk in riddles. I never mentioned using the old railway line. I never mentioned the tram running anywhere but up the main road, with an in town bus to supplement it. The fact is that the valley has never had a better bus service. I have been told that Stocksbridge C of E church site will be the tram terminus, believe it or not. A 57 every 10 minutes? You have got to be joking. Bus services are cut because they lose money. No conductors saves money, which therefore loses driving time. The subsidy runs out. I believe the tram has to pay its way, but if I am wrong I apologise. Since the second world war organisation of public transport in Britain has been a shambles, both nationally and locally. When the car era started we did not need trains. They are now more popular than ever. As I said before, the main form of inter city and local transport in Europe and elsewhere, is electric, both trains and trams. Trams don’t create fumes, they are clean, quiet and generally quicker than buses as they accelerate faster and brake later. They have four wide access doors and conductors. All this saves time. They are at times extremely busy. I would hate to think what the reaction would be if they were withdrawn and replaces with what would be a considerable number of slow buses. I have no more to say other than I cannot wait for the day I can catch the tram outside the Hub. Matter closed. Please keep your derogatory comments to yourself.

Your Letters
Well I’ve never had two versions of the same letter published alongside each other before. The first actually was a second stab after the other wasn’t published the week before. I’m sorry readers had rather too much of the bus/tram topic last week, but it wasn’t my fault! Steve Moxon
‘To be or not to be’ I am loved by the working classes Hated by the upper crust! Why do townies want to live here? They were born and bred in the cities There is a vast difference between us! The true aristocracy aren’t usually snobs! T’is the servants who are toffee nosed Upstairs downstairs, captured the whole truth Admitted many exceptions in all circumstances A distant relative of mine caught black leading Not black legging, as in union uprisings Returning with a bun in the oven! This was renowned in my parents day I have known three families this happened to At least they were treated with kindness Some cases not one bun, but two! So it was double trouble A friend went seeking his true Dad Found him, turned away, with a mere pittance! Later blessed by his own loving family

Top Tips: For Settling Back Into School
So the long summer holidays have finally ended. Now that it’s time to go back to school, it can feel like there’s nothing to look forward to. The weather’s grey, and half term seems ages away.
But don’t forget, it’s only the thought of it that can make you feel a bit glum. When you get there, normally it’s good to be back! You get to be with your friends again, you’re less likely to get bored and you’ll be constantly kept busy. You can also get your teeth into some new subjects or topics at school and let off some steam in the playground.
Local Directory
To avoid any back-to-school blues and really get back into it, read our top tips for braving the classroom again. * Make a firm decision to stick to your new routine and timetable - this will help you get back into the swing of things more
easily. Get up when your alarm goes off and get to wherever you need to be on time - whether it’s the school bus stop or your science lesson.
• Your first day back is a good chance to clean your desk and make sure you’ve got a healthy and hygienic new work station. You can always jazz it up with some fun stationery or pictures if you’re allowed. • Try to make sure you take some healthy food to school. Pick snack foods that boost your health like fresh fruit and lowfat dairy products. Also try to drink water throughout the day as this will help to keep you active and your brain sharp. • Throw yourself into any sports or exercise you do. Really making an effort will help to make up for any lack of activity over the holidays and get you going again.
Wharncliffe Side Primary School
Nursery
• Pay attention to the way you sit in your chair - try sit as straight as possible. Good posture is great for your back and is good training for later life. It will also help you to feel more alert and you’ll be more comfortable.
• If you get homework to do, don’t groan just try and get it done as soon as possible. The longer you leave things, the worse they feel and the bigger the job seems. Do it straightaway, and then you can relax and enjoy yourself. • If you walk or cycle home from school, remember to make sure you’re seen. Wear bright clothing or reflective stickers on your bag and jacket and always pay special attention if it’s dark. Try to walk with someone who lives near you so you’re not on your own. • Always prepare for the next school day.
Put anything you need to take in your bag and lay out your clothes ready. Being prepared always helps to keep you feeling on top of things and much more relaxed. • Get as much sleep as you can! School can be tiring and if you’re getting up early and running around a lot of the day, you need to recharge. Make a set time to go to bed at night, this way you’re less likely to have problems sleeping. Then you’ll be raring to get back to school the next day! • Remember these helpful phrases in replying to other kids who are bothering you: “I don’t like what you are doing.” “Please do NOT talk to me like that.” “Why would you say that?” Always remember to tell a trusted adult if you think you’re being bullied.

Sunday also saw our Ladies Past Captain’s Day. 18 of our past Lady Captain’s from near and far, turned out, some to play but some just to come and meet old friends and have dinner. The furthest back was Captain in 1979. It just proves the allegiance both current and past members have for the club. The golf was played in some variable weather, with both heavy showers and blustery wind. In third place was Jose Wright on 30 points, second was Lady Captain Kath Busfield but the winner of the Past Captain’s Trophy was Hilja O Sullivan on 31 points. A good score in horrid weather conditions. There were 2 mid-week competitions with Phil Jepson winning Division 1 and Alan Mosley won Division 2. The Ladies competed in a 9 hole Stableford comp, with winner Leanna O Sullivan beating her Mum Hilja by 1 point

Pigs let lead slip Stocksbridge RUFC 15-24 Leeds Modernians Stocksbridge let their first win of the season slip through their hands, as they lost 15 - 24 at home to Leeds Modernians. The Pigs were missing several players, as regular wingers Ryan Smith and Jack Spencer deputised as centres for the day, meaning the backline had a very lightweight look to it. However, Stocksbridge made a bright start and retained possession up-front in an attempt to capitalise on their superior set-piece and forward power, with Sam Whitaker and Ben Brown both going close. It took just over 15 minutes for the Stocksbridge pack to see the benefits of their labour as Reece Aspin found himself in unfamiliar territory when he latched onto a pass from Ben Brown who’d split the defence and the “Young Gez” scampered over to record his first try in a number of seasons. Adam Frith converted the try to give an opening score of 7 - 0 to the Pigs.
Leeds were the next to score, after Stocksbridge failed to clear the ball from their line effectively and the makeshift backline were caught out on the left. The conversion was missed to give the Pigs a slender lead, which wasn’t to last long as the home team struggled to stop their opposition number 8, who bullied his way through the Stocksbridge defence before offloading to his outside centre to finish the job off. The conversion was again missed, giving a half-time score of Stocksbridge 7-10 Leeds Modernians. The second half started brightly once again for the home team and after good work from Dan Lowe, Joe Jones and Rhys Keenan, Fly Half Bryn Evans was able to fire a long pass out to Callum Green, who beat two men for pace to score in the left hand corner. The conversion was missed, but a penalty by Adam Frith shortly after gave the Pigs a 5 point lead and they looked destined to put the visitors to the sword.
Unfortunately, a lack of composure at key times allowed the visitors to stay in the game and against the run of play, they capitalised on a Stocksbridge error to score a breakaway try in the right corner on the 70th minute. The try was converted to give Leeds a two point lead and that seemed to take the heart out of a courageous effort by the home team. With time running out and the Pigs pushing to get back into the lead, they were penalised from a line-out and were slow to react as the Modernians Outside Centre spotted a Stocksbridge prop in the backline and took full advantage, as he sailed round him to score under the posts. Final score Stocksbridge 15 Leeds Modernians 24. The Pigs are at home again on Saturday against Leeds Medics & Dentists and will be desperate to record their first win. Kick off is at 3pm and your support is greatly appreciated.

Bridge to Greendale Bridge in the Lake District, including scaling 30 summits and climbing 17,000 ft in the process. The challenge is aimed at the `Superveteran’ runner aged 50+, with a time limit based on age. Whittingham completed the course well within his allotted 18 hours, finishing in 17:13, supported by other PFR members en route. He was congratulated by Joss Naylor himself on his achievement. (PIC)
Northern Road Relays PFR took a team to the Northern 6-Stage Road Relays held at the Ethiad Stadium, Manchester, at the weekend. The team of Simon Pike, Shaun Dimelow, Gary Dean, Jon Waller, Scott Hinchcliffe and Gareth Cooke finished 58th against some strong competition in what is the biggest regional autumn event on the club running calendar.
Deepcar runner Richard Hayes came away from the Northern Masters Track and Field championships this past Sunday with a silver medal in the 800m setting a new personal best and then followed this up later on by winning gold in the 1500m. This caps off an incredible track season for the 35 year old, who has set new personal bests in the 800m, 1500m, 1 mile and 3000m. His times now ranks him 3rd in Yorkshire for 1500m & 3000m, 5th for 800m. This comes just a few weeks after his 5th anniversary of starting running and going from 20 stone to winning gold medals! Also Stocksbridge resident Richard Shaw who works at Crawshaws completed the very tough ultra race the Ladybower 50 coming 10th overall.

Steels nine goal show J&B
Antiques & Collectables
Peterborough Sports 1-9 Stocksbridge PS
By Jamie Grayson – www.nonleagueyourkshire.co.uk
Joe Lumsden got four and Brodie Litchfield got a hat-trick as Stocksbridge Park Steels pulled off one of their greatest wins in their history.
The Steels kept going and Rory Coleman (2) and Lumsden completed an incredible afternoon which under-lines Stocksbridge’s promotion credentials.
Chris Hilton probably deserves a knighthood or MBE after masterminding an unbelievable victory over one of the league’s big boys, who have rarely lost a game in the last two years.

Churh FA cup run comes to an end
The Steels were ruthless to say the least. Litchfield hit two in the first half before the Steels raised the bar with a spectacular second half display.
Penistone Church’s brave FA cup run came to a valiant end on Saturday away at Harrogate Town.
Lumsden netted two before Litchfield scored from close range to complete his first ever semiprofessional hat-trick – with Peterborough scoring in the middle.
I asked my players to do themselves proud, justice and give a true account of themselves - they certainly did that and more. For

57 minutes we kept the score to 0-0 and applied the game plan brilliantly and I cannot be prouder of my players today. Tiredness, fitness and quality had an impact in the last 30 minutes but the goals were not from carving us open, the 1st was a scruffy goal, however the best team did win but we gave everything
we will. Wednesday we have the Johnson brothers back so have a stronger squad than today and will be aiming for 3 points at home v Thackley. What a day, what an FA cup run, we continue to surpass expectations and long may it continue.
to the final whistle. The community of Penistone should be very proud. Thank you for your support - much appreciated. It has been a brilliant run and we have enjoyed every game but now our focus turns back to the league as we must improve our form, start winning games and climb the table. I am very confident
We are very sorry to announce that we will be closing down J&B Antiques in November 2017 due to an increase in our rent and buisiness rates; we find it no longer possible to run our business from these premesis. We will still be trading under J&B Antiques & Collectables and continuing with our house clearance service mainly online (through our website and social media). We will still be looking to buy: Antiques, collectables and furniture. Cash For Gold (by appointment only). Instead of running from a shop, we will be trading from a local storage unit (tbc). Our office will be located above Clark’s Chemist in Penistone.
We would like to thank all of our customers for your support over the 5 Years of trading. enquiries@jbantiques.co.uk www.jbantiques.co.uk
